And this I think is closer to the epic too. I remember reading that Karna looked at the Sun when asked about his kula. Also shooting arrow in a palace with a roof would look weird.

Oh yah that is true.. I remembered now.. 👏 for CVs and 👏 for Ketan too 😊

The first one is what I have read in Vyasa's MB and is widely believed..

Actually that make sense too, its hard to believe he lost from just by an inch after all he was equal to Arjun!

A new thread...😊😊

Ok,so,my first question...Could a brahmin too enter the swayamvar and win it???😲😲

P.S.: No offence.Only about knowledge.

It seems Arjuna asked Dhristadyumna. Apparently, Drupadi refused to marry Karna !

In Mahabharatha Draupadi remarked that "Naham Variyam Sutham" I do not like to marry a charioteer. On the other hand when Arjuna asks Dhristadyumna whether a Brahmana can participate in the svayamwara contest, Dhristadyumna replies that "Brahmano Vatha Rajanyo Vaishyo va shudra aeva va?" Whetehr one is Brahmana, Kshatriya, Vaishya or Shudra if he can wield the bow and hit the mark, I shall give my sister.

There seems to be another version out there where it stated, Karna was not invited to the swayamvara but merely he tagged along Duryodhana. Since Duryodhana is not capable of using bow and arrow, Karna represented him ( just like Bheesham did for his brothers). In either event, it seems Karna was not successful.

Having said that Arjuna could indeed participate if invited. The question probably is Why did he participate knowing he was not invited (remember Arjuna is dead at this point of time) ??

1. One says..when Karna comes to hit at the aim Draupadi stops him telling he is a suth-putra which was influenced by Krishna to Draupadi who knows if Karna tries to hit he will hit straight at the aim and he wanted to prevent Draupadi marrying Karna

2. The other variant says that Karna goes and hits at the aim missing by just one inch.

Which one of these is right, does he really participates or not?

Karna was not allowed to hit the target , he only picked up the bow because Duryodhana and Dushashana were unable to do so. This is mostly and widely believed.

The only time Karna and Arjuna missed a Target was when a swayamvar was held for a princess ( I forgot the name ). Karna first tried to hit the target but failed and so did Arjuna only Krishna was able to hit the target and marry the princess

There has been much discussions about who loved whom.. 😊.. Please read the closest translation to the most prevalent version of Mahabharata.. even if we agree some of the value is lost in translation .. this is much better than opinion.. a fact is a fact..

The swayamvara parva explains it all...

http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m01/m01188.htm

"Vaisampayana said, 'Thus addressed by the Brahmanas, the Pandavas, O Janamejaya, proceeded towards the country of the southern Panchalas ruled over by the king Drupada. And on their way those heroes beheld the illustrious Dwaipayana--that Muni of pure soul, and perfectly sinless. And duly saluting the Rishi and saluted by him, after their conversation was over, commanded by him they proceeded to Drupada's abode. And those mighty chariot-fighters proceeded by slow stages staying for some time within those beautiful woods and by fine lakes that they beheld along their way. Devoted to study, pure in their practices, amiable, and sweet-speeched, the Pandavas at last entered the country of the Panchalas. And beholding the capital, as also the fort, they took up their quarters in the house of a potter, Adopting the Brahmanical profession, they began to lead an eleemosynary life. And no men recognised those heroes during their stay in Drupada's capital.

"Yajnasena always cherished the desire of bestowing his daughter on Kiriti (Arjuna), the son of Pandu. But he never spoke of it to anybody. And, O Janamejaya, the king of Panchala thinking of Arjuna caused a very stiff bow to be made that was incapable of being bent by any except Arjuna.

If you continue to read, there is no indication what so ever that Druapadi met Arjuna prior to her swayamvara. Further more it took 16 days before every Prince of aryavarta could be there.

I think I answered my own question.. Why did Arjuna ( pretending as Brahmin) participate in swayamvara.. 3 reasons

1) Drupada never said, the test is only for kshtriyas. It was an open challenge although formal invitation was sent to princes.
2) Arjuna only got up AFTER all the invitees are done and there was a point made by other kings that only Arjuna can aim the arrow. It automatically became an open invitation
3) being born as Kshatriya, it is his duty to uphold the honor. His responsibility towards his vansh came before their safety. He took his brother's permission before he got up. He took king's permission before he aimed.

4) last but not the least.. not just Arjuna, all 5 were smitten with Draupadi 😆 and she had no clue who they were...

Since MB is not a codified epic, there can never be a right or a wrong answer.
Having said that, the most common interpretation is that Karna was stopped by Draupadi even before he could participate in the competition.
The reason being that Krishna knew that if Karna will participate, he will NOT miss the mark.
And if that happens Draupadi will marry Karna & her purpose of life will not get fulfilled.
In a way Krishna staged this whole event literally & metaphorically.
Hope this helps, Cheers.

And that is what my understanding is as well.
This interpretation makes most sense too.

I have a question,
Who are sutas?
Sons of
1. Brahmin father-Kshatriya mother or vice-versa
2. Viashya father- Kshatriya mother or vice-versa
Second question was Karna not invited and only tagged along Duri?

Sons of Kshatriya father-Brahmin mother..

It says Dury Dushy and other sons of Dhris accompanied by Karna have come.. I am not sure how this has to be interpreted..
