60. Anirudha marries Usha

As mentioned earlier, Pradhyumna & Mayavati had a son Anirudha, who was the pride of his kingdom. When Pradhyumna was made ruler of Mathura, Anirudha too moved there. After 2 years, as Krishna's sons & nephews all started having children, Anirudha got several brothers & sisters from them. Pradhyumna ruled Mathura for 4 years b4 the events below.

Sonitpur was a kingdom ruled by Banasura, son of Bali. He was a great Mahadev bhakt. He had 1000 arms and used to entertain Mahadev, for which Mahadev & Kartikeya both promised him that they'd defend him when he was under attack. But then he complained to Shiva that the 1000 arms were a heavy burden on him, since nobody was his equal. Mahadev blessed him that all but 2 of those arms would be destroyed by someone who is his equal.

Now, Banasura had a daughter named Usha, who one day had a dream about Anirudha, even though she had never met him. So she got her friend Chitralekha - someone pretty good @ drawing pictures & therefore so named - to draw pictures of various devas, gandharvas, siddhas, canaras, pannagas, daityas, vidyadharas, yakshas and humans. When she drew pictures of Krishna, Pradhyumna, Abhimanyu, it became warmer. Finally, she drew Anirudha, and it clicked.

So she flew to Mathura and while Anirudha was asleep, she took him away to Sonitpura, where Usha eloped w/ him. She entertained him in her palace, and as a result, couldn't keep the act straight enough - it was obvious to people that she was in love. Finally, this news reached Banasura, and when he came and discovered that Usha was married, he got furious and made Anirudha prisoner.

In the meantime, after some weeks, Mathura eventually noticed Anirudha's disappearance, and that made Mayavati worried. She took her divine form & started exploring, and discovered Anirudha @ Shonitpur. She then came back & told Pradhyumna that their son was a captive of Usha, and asked him to go & retrieve him. Pradhyumna put the kingdom under the control of Charudeshna, and set off w/ Mayavati.

The news that Pradhyumna had set off to war reached the council, & Bhima, Balarama & Krishna all came there to ask Pradhyumna how he could go off to war on his own. Pradhyumna said that he wouldn't have had it been an affair of state, but here, his son was a hostage in Banasura's kingdom, so it was not his place to involve his army or the council. Balarama told him that this was their family, so an act like this on Banasura's part was actually a declaration of war on the Yadavas. Rukmini came & asked Mayavati to go back & prep the kingdom to welcome Usha as their new bahurani, so Mayavati returned. Krishna told Pradhyumna that Banasura was much more dangerous than it seemed, since Mahadev himself had promised support.

Krishna told Balarama that there was no way he would win a battle against Mahadev, and nor did he wish to try. However, he needed Mahadev to be diverted from going to Banasura's aid in time. Balarama pointed out that that would mean making Mahadev break his vow to Banasura, and Krishna told him that for that reason, Mahadev simply had to be delayed, not obstructed, until Krishna had a major advantage on Banasura.

Krishna set off w/ the entire clan - his brothers, the Pandavas, all their sons, Aha, and in fact, every ruler in Aryavarta (except Anga & Kuntidesh), who was now related to Krishna by marriage, set off to accompany him to war. Very soon, they arrived @ Shonitpur, and Krishna sent Arjun as an envoy to Banasura asking him to release Anirudha & Usha, and offering to welcome him into the extended Yadava family, like everyone else. Banasura laughed & scoffed @ him, and Arjun pointed out to him that his kingdom alone was pitted against the rest of Aryavarta. Banasura pointed to his 1000 arms and said that he'd at last be using them optimally in fighting this huge army. Arjun returned & told Krishna that this time, his mission had failed, since Banasura was completely vain about his 1000 arms. He however did get to see Anirudha & get the first glimpse @ Usha 😆 and told Pradhyumna that they were both safe & sound.

In the meantime, Balarama went to Kailash, took a huge form, grabbed his plow & dug into Mt Kailash, just as Mahadev & Kartikeya were preparing to leave to support Banasura. Shiva, Parvati, Kartikeya, Devasena, Valli, Ganesh, Riddhi, Siddhi, Asokasundari, Manasa Devi, Ayappan, Nandi & the rest of the Ganas all gathered together and began exerting pressure on the mountain, & Balarama's plow got stuck. Balarama then started singing an extended Shiva stota, and Bholenath got lost while listening to him. Kartikeya tried to alert him that they needed to go to Banasura's aid, but in vain 😆

In the meantime, Banasura arrived @ the battlefield and blew his conch. Krishna blew his conch as well & the war started. Banasura, w/ 500 bows & arrows, fired arrows @ all directions, wounding & even killing some warriors. Aha (V4) & Virata were both slain in battle, and even Arjun & Karna were badly wounded, unable to withstand his onslaught. Within a short while, most of the kings & princes on the other side were wounded by Banasura, infuriating Krishna. Knowing that there was only so much of stalling that Banasura could do b4 Mahadev arrived, Krishna invoked his sudarshan chakra & started chopping off Banasura's arms.

By then, Mahadev realized the trouble that Banasura was in & told Balarama not to delay him any further, since he couldn't allow Banasura to die. Balarama conceded, & was allowed to withdraw his plow. Mahadev then went on Nandi to the battlefield, accompanied by Kartikeya on his peacock Surapadman and Durga on her lion. They arrived @ the battlefield and arrived just in time - Banasura was down to 4 arms.

Shiva then urged Krishna to end his onslaught, and not to take advantage of the fact that his army, though largely wounded, was now capable of killing Banasura. In the meantime, the sudarshan brought Banasura's hand count down to 2. Shiva then pointed out that b/w himself, Durga & Kartikeya, they could wipe out that army if Krishna insisted on making his vow come untrue. Krishna told them that he was happy w/ humbling Banasura, which Shiva agreed was a noble goal, compatible w/ his curse. All the warriors on the battlefield bowed to Mahadev, Durga & Kartikeya, happy to have received their darshan. Shiva then asked Banasura to formally marry off Usha to Anirudha, and take advantage of this huge guest list. 😆 In the meantime, Krishna & the Pandavas did the last rites for Aha & Virata. 😭 Sveta was crowned the new king of Matsya

Banasura then invited them all to the kingdom, where Sveta was crowned the new ruler of Matsya. Following that, the wedding of Anirudha & Usha was held w/ full pomp & ceremony. Following that, Banasura released everybody, & they all returned to their respective kingdoms.

Anirudha & Usha were welcomed w/ full honors in Mathura by Mayavati, Rukmini, Devaki & even guests like Subhadra, Hidimba & Draupadi. His young kid brothers were particularly excited in welcoming their new bhabi, and Mathura just had a ball 😆 Matsya too welcomed their new ruler Sveta, and Vatsala now became a queen.

61. Transitioning to the succession

Following the Ashwamedha yagna, Bhima ruled the Pandava empire for 16 years, ably assisted by Balarama, Krishna, Karna, Arjun & all their other brothers. In the provinces, all their deputies - Pradhyumna, Abhimanyu, Bhanu, Satsoma, Ghatotkacha, Asanga & Bali ably ran their parts of the kingdom, which were very happy & contented. Even in all the other kingdoms, the influence of Krishna spread, via his daughters & nieces, so in a nutshell, everybody throughout Aryavarta was content during Bhima's rule

Two years after the marriages of all the Pandava princes, Uttara gave birth in Indraprastha to Abhimanyu's first born - Parikshit. Ghatotkacha's son Anjanparva came to town to celebrate it, and everybody - Subhadra, Arjun, Uloopi, Chitrangada and all rejoiced. In the meantime, Satsoma's wife Maithili gave birth to a son in Hastinapur, and Draupadi, Valandhara, Hidimbi and others all joined in the festivities. Over the next several months, all the sons & bahus of the Pandavas & Vrishnis had several children - all sons & daughters. This made all the elders - Balarama, Bhima, Krishna & others ecstatic, as they took an active role in raising all these kids. The kids also became greatly popular & beloved amongst the subjects as well.

16 years later, Narada appeared b4 Krishna and gave him the message that the Devas wished to see Vishnu return to Vaikuntha. In fact, Bhima & his brothers had already made their fathers proud, and they wished to get them as well. Krishna agreed, & brought it up in the council.

The council unanimously agreed that the princes had proven themselves and had come of age, and that it was time to promote them to the next level - king. Accordingly, everyone was summoned to Vrindavan, where it was announced that Bhima, along w/ the council, would be retiring, and that each of the provinces that existed would now have their own kings. Pradhyumna would become the ruler of Mathura, Abhimanyu would become the ruler of Indraprastha, Bhanu @ Dwarka, Satsoma @ Hastinapur & Ghatotkacha @ Khandava van.

However, Pradhyumna & Ghatotkacha both told them that they too had actually ruled long, and wished to retire. Mayavati pointed out to Krishna that she got reunited w/ Pradhyumna while looking for Kama dev, but now they wished to return to deva lok. Krishna pointed out that Anirudha was still too young, but Pradhyumna told him that he had decided to turn it over to Nisatha, and leave Anirudha & Usha in their care. Ghatotkacha too told Bhima that he too wished to retire, having run things even b4 the marriage of Draupadi, and that Anjanparva had come of age, and would be ably assisted by his other son Meghavarma and his minister Barbaryk. 😆

Bhima & Krishna then agreed to these changes, and the following announcements were made:
  • The Pandava empire would no longer remain an empire, but rather a loose federation, open to other kingdoms in Aryavarta
  • Abhimanyu & Uttara would succeed Bhima in Indraprastha as the ruler
  • Bhanu would become the ruler of Dwarka
  • Satsoma would become the ruler of Hastinapur
  • Nisatha would become the ruler of Mathura
  • Anjanparva would become the prince of Khandava van, but under Abhimanyu's rule now. He would however become an independent ruler once he came of age, just like Ghatotkacha b4 him
After a few months of transitioning, Abhimanyu & Uttara were crowned the maharaj & maharani of Indraprastha, and similarly, all the other princes mentioned above were crowned. All kingdoms had a mixed reaction - happy about the succession, but sad to see the departure of Krishna, his brothers & the Pandavas. However, it was understood that they couldn't go on forever and that things had to move on.

All the wives of the Vrishnis & the Pandavas - Rukmini, Revathi, Draupadi, Subhadra, Hidimbi, Uloopi, Chitrangada, Satyabhama et al decided to accompany their husbands on this last trip. It was an emotional farewell as they all let go of their sons, bahus & grandkids. There were lots of rhona-dhona, but ultimately, Krishna told the rest that they'd never leave if they stayed to watch all that, and so they all left, leaving distraught families behind 😭

Following the coronation of Abhimanyu & Satsoma, the Pandavas & Krishna went to Prabhasa, where Arjun surrendered his Gandhiva bow to Varuna. In the meantime, rulers from all over Aryavarta, grieved @ hearing about the abdication of Bhima, arrived there as well. However, Krishna explained things to them and they were satisfied. He told them that the Dwapar Yuga was ending, Kalyug was about to start and that it was their duty to ensure a smooth transition to the new yuga. They then met all their daughters & grandkids & blessed them, b4 sending them back home w/ lots of gifts that they would be giving away one last time.

Following all this, the Pandavas & Balarama & Krishna visited Matsya, where Keechaki had come of age, being ~17. Rukman's son Rukmaka was the prince she chose to marry @ her swayamvara. An attempt was made to disrupt her swayamvara by a Trigartha prince & abduct her, but Uttar fought & killed him, and Keechaki's choice was upheld. Karna, Sudeshna, Sveta, Uttar & their queens - Vatsala, et al all blessed her, b4 she got married and went to her sasural @ Kundinpur.

All the rulers of various kingdoms returned home and resumed ruling, embracing themselves for Kalyug. In the meantime, the devas started making arrangement for the swargarohan yatra of Vishnu's 9th avatars & the Pandavas.

62. Swargarohan yatra

Following the nuptuals of Keechaki & Rukmaka, the Pandavas & Krishna & his brothers all returned to Prabhasa. There, Arjun went to the shores & returned his Gandhiva to Varuna. Varuna blessed him that he'd always be remembered for his heroism in war. Following that, Indra arrived in a chariot, and told Krishna that they had come to take them to swarga. He told him that he had also sent arrangements for the Pandavas to be picked up & taken to swarga.

Suddenly, Hanuman appeared there w/ a chariot driven by Marut, and told Bhima that he had come to escort him & his wives to swargalok. Bhima asked him about his brothers, and Hanuman told him that their fathers had made similar arrangements for them, but this one was by Pavan, and he had sent Hanuman to fetch Bhima, Hidimbi & Valandhara & take them w/ him. Ghatotkacha too requested that he be allowed, and Hanuman was reluctant, but Bhima told them that Ghatotkacha was his son who had faithfully served him, and Vayu couldn't be vindictive about the affair of Krishna's 12,000 nieces & deny him. Ultimately, Pavan appeared, blessed & hugged Ghatotkacha & welcomed him to his abode as well, and asked Bhima, Hidimbi & Valandhara to fetch them. Hanuman took them all to swargalok, where they were welcomed by Pavan, Pandu, Kunti & Madri. Pandu told Bhima that he was proud of what he had done, and that Abhimanyu, Satsoma, Anjanparva & Babruvahana would continue the glory of their family.

Next, Manu appeared in a divine chariot driven by Sugreev, & met Karna. He told them that Suryadev had sent him to fetch Karna, Nakul, Sahadev & their wives, including Draupadi. They asked about Arjun, and he told them that Indra had made those arrangements. He told them that since the Ashwin kumaras Dastra & Nasatya were sons of Sanjana, they too had asked him to fetch Nakul, Sahadev & their wives as well. Since Karna had originally won Draupadi, she was chosen to accompany this group, where she would be w/ 3 of her husbands. He also told them that Yudhisthir would be there to welcome them as well. Draupadi expressed some reservations about that, but Sugreev told him that Yudhisthir had already been punished, and that he & Vaishnavi had also made preparations to genuinely welcome all of them. So Karna, Draupadi, Nakul, Karenamati, Sahadev & Vijaya all ascended the chariot, & Sugreev took all of them back to Suryakund. There, they were welcomed by Surya, Sanjana, Chaya, Manu, Yamaraj, Yamuna, Shani, Tapti, the Ashwins, Sugreev, Roma, Yudhisthir & Vaishnavati. Karna, Nakul, Sahadev all fell @ Yudhisthir's feet, & he hugged them & told them that he was forgiving them. They asked him about Prativindya, but he told them that while Prativindya harbored resentment against Nakul & the Pandavas, he had no ill will towards Abhimanyu or his brothers, and would be pretty friendly w/ them going forward. Vaishnavati welcomed Draupadi, Karanamati & Vijaya, and all of them enjoyed a joyous reunion.

Arjun & his wives were alone w/ Krishna & his brothers & wives, when suddenly, Sachi putra Jayanta arrived driving a chariot driven by Vali. He told Arjun that that one was to take him & his wives to Devalok. Arjun ascended the chariot followed by Uloopi, Chitrangada & Subhadra, and they all headed to devalok. Pradhyumna & Mayavati too joined them, since they wanted to rejoin Indra's court as Kama & Rati. There, all of them were welcomed by Indra, Sachi, Jayanta, Vali, Tara and given worthy thrones. Indra even announced that Arjun would be devaraj for a day, while Uloopi, Chitrangada & Subhadra would be queens for a day. There was full rejoicing in Amravati, and Arjun, Uloopi, Chitrangada & Subhadra were all taken out for a tour of devalok. In the meantime, Pradhyumna & Mayavati discarded their respective bodies, and re-appeared as Kama & Rati. Suddenly, Mahadev, Parvati, Kartikeya, Devasena, Valli, Ganesh, Riddhi & Siddhi appeared. They blessed Kama & Rati & promised them that they'd never again be separated all of eternity

On their way to their respective abodes, Vayu's, Surya's & Indra's chariots all flew over a fiery region. They asked about it, and were told that it was naarg. Looking down, they saw Dhritarashtra, Gandhari, Shakuni, Duryodhan, Dushashan, Jayadrath, Bakasura, Kirmira, Alambusha, Narakasura, Kansa, Pootana, Bahlika, Somadatta, Bhurishrava and all were having orgies, and being tortured by several of Yamaraj's attendants. Everyone had a good laugh & were enjoying those scenes to the fullest, b4 their attention was broken w/ the news that they had arrived @ their respective homes.

It was now the turn of Krishna. First, the Pushpak arrived, and then Kubera, who brought it there, told everyone that he'd be taking Revathi, Kalindhi, Radha, Jambavati, Satyabhama & all the other wives in that chariot to Golok, where they would all be under the leadership of Radha. Kirtiman, Sushena, Bhadrasena, Rju, Sammardhana & Bhadra too would join them here. Separately, Balarama would return to Vaikuntha as Sesha-nag, and Garuda arrived to take Krishna & Rukmini to Ksheersagar. There, Krishna & Rukmini took a dip & resumed their divine forms as Narayan & Lakshmi, and soon prepared for their ultimate entry to Vaikuntha. Jaya & Vijaya welcomed them, telling them how relieved they were to have their curses behind them 😊

After a few days, Indra, Surya, Pavan & Radha decided to prepare the way for Narayan's & Lakshmi's final grihapravesh into Vaikuntha. So they brought their entire groups there, and everybody - Indra, Arjun, Pavan, Bhima, Surya, Karna, Yudhisthir, Nakul, Sahadev, Kama, Rati, Draupadi & all the womenfolk, Radha, Kirtiman & all brothers, all the 16,107 wives of Krishna's brothers & himself, Ghatotkacha, the 8 Vasu brothers, Pandu & wives all were gathered there to welcome them. This time, the Sanata brothers were honorably received and asked to flank Sesha-nag. Following that, everyone welcomed Narayan & Lakshmi as they entered & took their place on Sesha nag. The Pandavas & all their wives, as well as all the other wives & sisters in law of Krishna all went down on their knees & worshipped Narayan, as he blessed them eternally and granted that they be liberated from future birth-death cycles & be united w/ him forever. Indra then announced that everyone would perform 'Dance, Devalok, Dance' here and do a grand celebration for Narayan. Indra & Sachi, Kama & Rati, Pandu & Kunti, Yudhisthir & Vaishnavati, Bhima & Hidimba, Karna & Draupadi, Arjun & Subhadra, Nakul & Karenamati, Sahadev & Vijaya, Virata & Sudeshna (who had arrived by now), Drupada & his wife & every other spousal jodi participated, while the extra spouses (Uloopi, Chitrangada, Valandhara, et al) cheered from the sidelines.

Narayan & Lakshmi enjoyed this for ever - until the end of Kalyug arrives.

63. Epilog

On Bhulok, following the departure of Krishna & the Pandavas, a new order set in. It wasn't until a while that Kalyug would start.

After the passing of the Pandavas, Abhimanyu sent Suhotra as an envoy to Kuntidesh to invite Prativindya to reconcile w/ them. This time, Prativindya agreed, since everybody who had insulted or killed his father had passed on. The Pandavas held an yagna in Indraprastha where a new coalition was formed - Abhimanyu, Babruvahana, Satsoma, Prativindya & Anjanparva.

One day, Nisatha, the ruler of Mathura, wore a crown that was once worn by Kansa. As a result, the spirit of Raja Kali entered him, and he went hunting in a forest. While there, he lost his way, and asked a rishi Shamika for directions. The rishi was observing a vow of silence and did not answer him, and in retaliation, Nisatha put a dead snake on his shoulders. Following that, Shamika's son Shrungi cursed that Nisatha would be bitten by Naga ruler Takshasha.

When Nisatha learnt about the curse, he was appalled, but Ulmuka ordered that a palace be constructed on top of a huge tower, & all restrictions on entry be imposed. One rishi came w/ certain accessories w/ which he could bring anything back to life. Ulmuka heard about him & smuggled him into the palace. On the 7th day after the event, Takshasha managed to smuggle himself in & bit Nisatha. The rishi brought Nisatha back to life, but then a demon named Kali entered Nisatha in the process and filled him w/ sinful thoughts, thereby negating the herbs and causing him to die again. Before dying, Nisatha asked Ulmuka to run the kingdom until Anirudha came of age. He would be supported by his various cousins, half of whom were here. In the meantime, Takshasha escaped & took refuge w/ Indra

Ulmuka then conferred w/ Bhanu, and they decided to declare wholesale war on the Nagas. In Indraprastha, however, this was opposed by Iravana, who told Abhimanyu that a wholesale genocide of Nagas was not warranted for the acts of just Takshasha. He reminded Abhimanyu of how their ancestor Aryaka was a Naga, even if he ignored mother Uloopi. Abhimanyu assured him that he had all the respect for not just Aryaka, but Uloopi as well, and would see to it that Ulmuka didn't go overboard w/ his justice.

A few years later, Anirudha was made the ruler of Mathura, and decided to start a yagna to kill Takshasha, & wipe out the Nagas. This almost brought the Pandavas & Yadavas to the brink of war - the Pandavas told the Yadavas that they couldn't allow this, and Anirudha sent back an envoy promising full scale war if the Pandavas tried to stop him from avenging Nisatha. Knowing that the Pandavas had a formidable alliance, he too formed one, allied w/ Bhanu in Dwarka, Asanga in Gokul, Bali in Martikavat and even started gathering other rulers whose daughters were all nieces of Krishna, threatening to outnumber the Pandavas.

The yagna started. In the meantime, Manasa Devi, the daughter of Shiva, appealed to her son Rishi Astika to save the Nagas. Iravana too came to him and asked him to prevent a war b/w the Pandavas & the Yadavas. Astika agreed, & went to the yagna site.

Astika then went to Anirudha's yagna in Mathura, and persuaded him not to go ahead w/ the sacrifice. Instead, he suggested that he order an invasion of Devalok. Accordingly, Anirudha launched such an invasion, but it ended badly for Anirudha, since Ulmuka, Bhanu & all sons & nephews of Krishna were slain in this war by Indra & the devas, & Anirudha was isolated. However, one thing was achieved - Takshasha did get slain by Anirudha himself, and victory, if a pyrrhic one, was achieved.

Kalyug now started, and Dwarka, having lost all its protecting princes, soon submerged in the ocean. This caused panic, and so Abhimanyu held a conference w/ his alliance, and Anirudha. It was decided that they do what they can to ensure that the transition to Kalyug, while inevitable, happens gradually, instead of suddenly.

This happened, and the rest of the Pandava reign pretty much preserved the Pandava empire, and slowed down to a snail's pace the advent of adharm.

After 64 years of ruling, Abhimanyu, Uttara, Satsoma, Maithili and their brothers & wives all gave up their thrones & took sanyas. Parikshit & his cousins succeeded them and continued the Pandava dynasty in those 5 kingdoms.

Naturally, Jaya and Vijaya would not risk offending them again.
