If Bhima won as a result of Kubera throwing a game, it would mean that Bhima didn't win based on his newly acquired dice skills from Virata, which is what he wanted. If he lost, whether it was fairly or by throwing a game, he'd remain unsatisfied.

I didn't get the irony - was it Kunti's or Vali's that you were referring to?

Yama was following the match, but he'd have to go whenever someone dies, thus interrupting his entertainment 😆

51. Bhima wins his first dice game

The game continued to the final round, and it came down to the wire on the final move, w/ both Bhima & Kubera needing 5 to win on their final move. Everybody in all 3 worlds watched it w/ rapt attention. After a few tries, Bhima got 5 and sealed the game.

Everybody erupted in excitement, and Bhima was mobbed by everyone - Pandu, Yudhisthir, his mothers & brothers, Vayu, Hanuman, Krishna, Balarama, the devas, Ghatotkacha, the asuras and just about everyone else. Pandu, Yudhisthir, Kunti & Madri all hugged Bhima, Karna, Arjun, Nakul & Sahadev one last time b4 taking leave of them and returning w/ Yamaraj to Yamalok. Kubera congratulated Bhima on his first dice victory, and told him that he felt happy even in defeat. Bhima fell @ his feet and invited him to be a guest of honor @ the Ashwamedha yagna. The tridevs also came & blessed them. Parvati & Kartikeya both praised Bhima for picking up the game as fast as he did, Kartikeya noting that it was a tribute to Virata as well. Mahadev praised them all for what they achieved as well.

On earth, Abhimanyu, Ghatotkacha, Satsoma and Babruvahana ordered celebrations for Bhima's victory in all their kingdoms, and there was joy in all the Pandava allied kingdoms, given the tons of gold that they had won as a result of all the gambling. Abhimanyu ordered that while some of the wealth can be used in the celebrations and saved in the reserves, the bulk of it was to be dedicated towards the yagna. The Pandavas thanked everyone in Alkapuri who had come there to support them, and then took leave of Kubera and returned to Indraprastha, along w/ Balarama, Krishna, Virata, Ghatotkacha and all the rest.

In the meantime, Abhimanyu summoned Satsoma & Ghatotkacha to Indraprastha for yagna duties, and issued invitations to all the kings who had allied w/ the Pandavas during the war, as well as relatives who had remained neutral, such as Babruvahana, so that they too could co-host the event. The rulers of Madra, Matsya (Sveta, since Virata was w/ the Pandavas), Panchala, Kekaya, Srinjaya, Kosala, Vidarbha, Magadha & Chedi all arrived @ Indraprastha. Prativindya too received an invitation, but declined, instead prefering to send them his good wishes.

A few days later, Bhima, Virata, Krishna and all the rest of them returned to Indraprastha, and that day, Kubera rained on Indraprastha all the gold he had lost. The coffers full, Indraprastha was ready for the yagna. Following the Pandava return, Babruvahana too arrived @ Indraprastha w/ Chitrangada & Uloopi, and Arjun welcomed them all and told him that Uloopi & Chitrangada would henceforth live w/ him in Indraprastha. Bhima too welcomed Babruvahana and said that although the Pandavas recognized him as an independent dynasty, they'd give him honorary co-host duties, so that he too could enjoy w/ his brothers. Abhimanyu, Iravana, Shrutakarman and other brothers & cousins all welcomed him and included him in their family meetings. Ghatotkacha too joined.

A few days after their return, preparations started for the yagna. An Ashwamedha horse needed to be obtained for the sacrifice. Bhima was going to send Arjun or Karna, but here, Babruvahana volunteered to go and get it. Along w/ him, Ghatotkacha's son Anjanparva too volunteered to go, and so did Vrishasena. So Bhima gave them all permission, and they all went off to get an Ashwamedha horse.

Varaali

I think that for this part, I'll use some of Jamenaya's ideas on how an Ashwamedha horse was procured by Vrishaketu & Meghvarna - instead, I substituted Vrishaketu w/ Vrishasena, Meghvarna w/ Anjanparva and decided to have Babruvahana here, since he ain't gonna kill Arjun. Iravana has already shown his heroism in the war by killing Bhagadatta 😆

52. Getting the Ashwamedha horse

Yauvanashva was the ruler of Bhadravati, and had a multi-colored horse, which was heavily guarded such that even Vayu would have trouble getting access to it. This was the horse that the Pandavas needed to get in order to proceed w/ the yagna.

Babruvahana told Bhima that he had missed out on the war in Kurukshetra and didn't get an opportunity to serve his father, and so wanted to do it now. Bhima accepted, on persuasion by Arjun. Vrishasena too volunteered, and Ghatotkacha's young son Anjanparva too wanted to go. The next day, the first stage of the yagna is complete by Babruvahana, Vrishasena & Anjanparva being ceremonially sent off by V4, Devaki, Draupadi, Hidimbi and others.

Three days later, they reached Bhadravati, a city where except chanting of Vedas or twanging of bows, no sound was audible. The 3 of them knew, thru spies earlier, that the horse was hidden in a pineapple grove, and so got there and planned their strategy accordingly. While they were waiting, the multi-colored horse made its appearance. It was beautifully decorated, surrounded by priests offering it sandalwood paste and kumkum, dhoopa & deepa. There were mantras being chanted in the air, roars of warriors & trumpeting of elephants. Since there was a prediction that the horse would be getting Krishna's darshan at some point in future, it was being so worshipped.

Anjanparva told Babruvahana that he'd make the first attempt to capture and guard the horse, and the other 2 could repel any counter attacks to retrieve the horse. With his mayavi shakti, he made the skies all dark, and created plenty of thunder & lightning. The devas were worried and reported this to Indra, who sent Vayu to find out what was going on. Vayu returned and told him that it was his great grandson and grandson of Bhima, and he had no designs on Indra's throne. Relieved to hear that, Indra recalled all deva troops and ordered them not to put any obstacles b4 Anjanparva.

Anjanparva then created a twister (cyclone) and sucked up the horse, which then ended up w/ him. The horse captured, Anjanparva landed @ a safe spot, and the troops guarding the horse started out to attack him. However, at this point, Babruvahana & Vrishasena both came in b/w and covered the soldiers w/ a shower of arrows.

Soon, Yauvanashva, on hearing this news, arrived @ the battlefield along w/ his son Suvega. Babruvahana confronted Yauvanashva, while Vrishaketu confronted Suvega. Babruvahana was much faster than Yauvanashva and w/ his arrows, knocked his mace off his chariot, and destroyed his swords, shields, lances and other weapons. He then broke his bow and w/ another arrow, knocked him unconscious. In the meantime, Vrishasena overcame Suvega.

When Yauvanashva recovered, he declared victory, stating that he now realized that the destiny of the horse - meeting Krishna - had arrived, and so he was on the side of Babruvahana. He then joined Babruvahana and announced that he'd fight for him as well, and challenged anybody who'd dare oppose the horse going to Indraprastha. His entire army and everyone then switched alliances. Yauvanashva then announced that he was crowning Suvega the king, and would leave so that he could dedicate the rest of his life to the success of Bhima's yagnas. He then ordered all citizens of Bhadravati to rally behind Babruvahana, and return w/ him to Indraprastha.

Their mission accomplished, Babruvahana, Vrishasena & Anjanparva all returned to Indraprastha, accompanied by Yauvanashva and his entire retinue. Bhima & Draupadi welcomed Yauvanashva & his wife Prabhavati. Yauvanashva described to Bhima, Karna, Arjun & Ghatotkacha the exploits of Babruvahana, Vrishasena & Anjanparva, and they were all proud of their sons. Arjun's son Shrutakarman was entrusted w/ the protection of the horse.

In the meantime, Pradhyumna & Bhanu arrive @ Indraprastha, along w/ their entire families, including brothers, sisters, wives and so on.

53. Horse seized & retrieved

Once the denizens of Mathura, Dwarka, Gokul & Martikavat arrived in Indraprastha, they stopped @ the Yamuna, where Krishna went to pay his respects to Bhima. Bhima welcomed him, and Krishna also paid his respects to V4, who was also present there. On hearing that Devaki, Rohini & other mothers of Krishna were also there, Bhima & Draupadi went out to welcome them heartily. Arjun & Subhadra, Abhimanyu & Uttara & other Pandava womenfolk also came. Once they had met, Devaki requested to see the horse. Eager to please her, Bhima gave permission, and soon, everyone set off to the place where Dhaumya was worshipping the horse.

While the Yadavas were getting ready to see the horse, someone else was also getting ready - Anushalva, the brother of Shalva who had succeeded him to the throne of Saibya, suddenly appeared, captured the horse and then put his huge army in the formation of a grdhravyuha (a vulture formation). Krishna knew that it was a challenge to him more than to Bhima. He then took a Bira (a betel leaf formation) and announced that whoever felt brave enough to challenge Anushalva should take the leaf out of his hand and fight him. Satyabhama's son Bhanu and Arjun's son Srutakarman - embarrassed @ not being able to stop Anushalva - took the leaf, and Krishna blessed them and they set off.

Bhanu took on Anushalva while Srutakarman broke through that formation and headed for the horse. Finally, he got near to the horse and captured it, and was immediately surrounded & attacked. At this, more warriors entered the fray. Sarvaga, Iravana, Nirmitra & Suhotra all entered the fray & penetrated the vyuha, and soon managed to get to Srutakarman, who still defended the horse, and the 4 brothers formed a protective defense around him, while fighting their way out of the vyuha. In the meantime, Bhanu & Anushalva both wounded each other and both fainted. The horse was rescued and brought b4 Krishna, and Devaki and everyone else got to see it as well.

After regaining consciousness, Anushalva conceded and congratulated Bhanu. Yauvanashva came to Anushalva and narrated how he too had stupidly tried to oppose the yagna @ one point, and invited Anushalva to join him, and make peace w/ Krishna. Anushalva did, and Bhima welcomed him to join the yagna.

Srutakarman was treated for his wounds, and preparations were made now for the journey of the horse. Question though - who would accompany the horse? Karna? Arjun? Abhimanyu? Srutakarman? Satsoma? Iravana? Satanika?

Decisions, decisions 😆

54. The battles of the Ashwamedha

Following the rescue of the horse, the yagna started. Dhaumya and his group of priests conducted the various rituals associated w/ the yagna b4 the horse would be released. Finally, the horse was brought out and Bhima asked Karna to follow it and establish Pandava suzereinity over all kingdoms. Vrishasena requested Bhima if he could do it instead, to which there were other claimants as well - Abhimanyu, Srutakarman, Satsoma, Sarvaga, Iravana, Satanika, Nirmitra, Srutasena & Suhotra. Finally, Bhima decided that those who had contributed so far in the war itself or the battles against Yauvanashva & Anushalva should stay, and those yet to make a mark should go. In the meantime, Krishna's sons & nephews too threw their crowns into the ring. Ultimately, it was decided that Rukmini's other son Charudeshna should follow the horse, supported by Sarvaga, Satanika, Nirmitra & Suhotra. The horse was brought to the yagna sthal, Draupadi & Rukmini did arati for the horse, and then the horse was soon on its way. Bhima asked his sons & nephews to try and minimize the bloodletting, saying that too much was already lost @ Kurukshetra, and they didn't want to rid the world of kshatriyas. The first few kingdoms that the horse went through were Pandava allies & co-hosts, and therefore welcomed the horse & the warriors w/ them. The horse initially went through Panchala & Madra, and had no issues.

The first kingdom where Charudeshna faced opposition was Trigartha. The horse was seized, and Susarma's sons Suryavarman, Ketuvarman & Dhritavarman all attacked the Pandavas. Nirmitra took on Ketuvarman, Suhotra on Suryavarman & Satanika on Dhritavarman. After a fierce battle, Nirmitra slew Ketuvarman & Suhotra Suryavarman. In the meantime, Charudeshna & Sarvaga scattered the Trigarta forces protecting Dhritavarman, and finally, they surrendered. Charudeshna told them that they had no wish to kill them, and simply wanted them to accept the Pandava dominion. Dhritavarman agreed.

Following this, the Pandava army reached Sindhu, the kingdom once ruled by Jayadrath. Recalling the death of Jayadrath and Suratha in the war, the Saindava army took on them, and soon, Charudeshna, Sarvaga, Satanika, Nirmitra & Suhotra were soon engaged in a fierce battle. The opposition, despite the lack of a king, resisted fiercely, and a number of them were slain, and a number badly wounded. Charudeshna then addressed them and told them that he didn't wish to slay them, and invited them to surrender. They laughed @ him & the onslaught continued. However, the 4 Pandava princes kept showering the Saindavas w/ arrows and soon destroyed most of their horses & elephants.

Suddenly, Duhsala arrived, barefeet, all decked in white, baby in one arm and waving the end of her sari as a white flag w/ the other. She called on the Saindavas to stop, and reminded them that currently, they have no king, and that she was only running things w/ their help. She told them that if they all got killed, her dynasty would be over. Hearing her, the Saindava warriors stopped and rallied behind her, and told her that they'd avenge the death of her husband and son. However, seeing her, Charudeshna & the Pandavas too dismounted and approached her w/ folded hands. Duhsala showed them the baby in his hands and told them that it was her grandson & Suratha's son, and reminisced about how she once forced Bhima to take her doll in hands, 😆 and offered her baby to Sarvaga, who affectionately took it in his arms and the baby promptly peed, making Satanika, Nirmitra & Suhotra laugh. Duhsala then started crying, remembering how her husband & son had died. Charudeshna comforted her and told her that the Pandavas bore her family no ill-will, and would happily take her kingdom under their protection. Not just that, his brother Bhanu right next door in Dwarka would take Sindhu as a protectorate, and help Duhsala rule until the son of Suratha came of age. The princes all took turns in hugging the baby and taking Duhsala in their chariots, they took her back to the palace, accompanied by all the Saindeva troops, where Charudeshna announced that the Pandavas would recognize Suratha's son as the rightful future ruler, w/ Duhsala as the regent. A messenger was sent to Dwarka to send troops to Sindhu, who were asked to help Duhsala establish control on Sindhu, which was w/o a ruler. Once this was done, the Pandava princes took leave of Duhsala and proceeded.

The horse was released, and then proceeded to Dwarka. In Dwarka, a handful of youths captured the horse, and incurred the fury of Charudeshna. He asked the Pandavas to stand aside for this case, while he dismounted and reminded them that he was a prince of Dwarka, and how dare they capture the horse of an army headed by him. He threatened to get them executed by the palace guards if they didn't release it. Balarama's son Ulmuka, who was running Dwarka in the absense of everyone else, arrived there and ordered them to release the horse, & they complied.

The horse then went through Kekaya, an allied kingdom, and finally found itself in Gandharva. Here, Shakuni's grandson Subhaga ordered the horse captured, and the Pandavas found themselves in a battle once again. He ordered a few of his uncles to capture the horse & go into battle, and Charudeshna & others tried to dissuade them from battle, telling them that Bhima wished to mend relations w/ Gandhara that had been poisoned by Shakuni all these years. However, they ignored him and told him that they'd avenge the death of Shakuni and soon Charudeshna, Nirmitra and Satanika were engaged in a fierce battle w/ the Gandharas. Soon Subhaga too arrived in the battlefield and insulted Sahadev & Srutasena, and hearing his father & brother insulted, Suhotra challenged him to battle. Suhotra quickly destroyed Subhaga's chariot and weapons and captured him, and ordered all the Gandharas to surrender if they didn't want him executed. He then told Subhaga to accept an end to the animousity and attend the yagna, and Subhaga agreed.

The horse then continued, and went through the former kingdoms of Sudakshina & Bahlika, b4 turning south and going through Panchala & Matsya. The Pandavas then went through various kingdoms, like Chedi, Avanti, Kosala, Kalinga and Banga, defeating a handful of Yavana kingdoms on the way, until they arrived in Anga.

The next obstacle that the horse faced was in Anga, run by Vikarna. He decided to block them, and accordingly, Yuyutsu, @ his orders, seized the horse. A fierce battle then ensued b/w Charudeshna & Vikarna on one hand, and Sarvaga & Yuyutsu on the other. Sarvaga very quickly defeated & disarmed Yuyutsu, while Vikarna fought a fierce battle w/ Charudeshna. In the meantime, Satanika, Nirmitra & Suhotra fought the Kaurava army and scattered it. Finally, Vikarna's chariot was shattered & he was disarmed, and Charudeshna told him that he had no desire to harm him, but all he needed to do was accept that the Pandavas were now superior to the Kauravas, and that Anga was a vassal state. Vikarna sighed & agreed.

Following Anga, the horse moved to Pragjyotisha, where Bhagadatta's son Vajradatta decided to confront Charudeshna. Vajradatta reminded Charudeshna how his father had sent Charudeshna's brother Samba to Yamalok, and offered him the opportunity to meet his brother. A fierce battle took place b/w them. Like his father b4 him, Vajradatta charged @ the Pandava army on his rogue elephant, and Bhima's son Sarvaga took on the elephant w/ his mace. He did a good job dodging the elephant, and wounding its trunk w/ his mace. In the meantime, Satanika, Suhotra & Nirmitra too attacked the elephant's legs, wounding it w/ sharp arrows. Sarvaga in the meantime attacked the elephant, and wounded it badly to the point that it collapsed, and Vajradatta fell. Charudeshna quickly disarmed him, and then told him that he had no desire to avenge Samba's death, and was under instructions to minimize any bloodletting: however, Vajradatta had to accept the dominion of the Pandavas. Sarvaga too told Vajradatta to attend his father's Ashwamedha yagna, and accept an end to the enmity against Bhima & Krishna. Vajradatta agreed.

Following this, the horse turned back & went through Magadha, Mithila & Ayodhya, where it encountered no opposition. It then went through friendly territory in Panchala again and finally through Hastinapur, where the citizens welcomed Satanika, who was now a local. Finally, the victorious horse returned to Indraprastha, where it was welcomed by Bhima, Krishna, Balarama, Virata, Kshatradharma, Rukamratha, and all the other Pandava friends & allies.

The stage was now set for the yagna to continue.

55. The completion of the yagna

After the return of the horse, the Pandavas made arrangements for the yagna sthal, as well as the accommodation of the various rulers who would be visiting as a result of various invitations. Nakul selected a spot for the horse sacrifice, and had it duly decorated. Karna sent out messengers to various rulers to come. A lot of the rulers came to the yagna, w/ a handful of exceptions, such as Vikarna, Prativindya and any representatives of Sindhu. The ones who did come brought several riches for the yagna. Bhima assigned to them various palaces for their accommodation, as well as rich food & drinks. Bhima followed all the guests to the venue, which was an exhibition site in itself.

Bhima then assigned to Karna the duty of honoring all the chief guests. It started w/ the Yadavas - Balarama, Krishna & their brothers, Satyaki, Pradhyumna, Akrura, Uddhav, and then other guests, such as Virata, and the rulers of Panchala, Madra, Kekaya, and other kingdoms were honored. Finally, Dhaumya told Bhima that the auspicious days had arrived, and on those days, they then got the various rituals performed. Unlimited amounts of food & drink were distributed to all the guests & citizens, and Indraprastha was even more festive than it was when princes were born. After the horse sacrifice, Bhima offered his entire possessions to the assembled Brahmins, but Krishna told him that that had been given by him to Bhima, and instead, to give them unlimited gold.

When everything had been given away, a blue eyed mongoose - half golden - appeared. He belittled the yagna telling them that what was done here wasn't even a fraction of that done by a very generous brahmin of Kurukshetra. The mongoose narrated to them the story of a brahmin who in a famine stricken time, along w/ his wife, son & bahu, gave up all their food to a hungry guest of theirs, who was not satisfied w/ all the food he was given, and ultimately finished up the food of every one of his hosts' family. The guest turned out to be Yamaraj, who took the family directly to heaven. As a result of witnessing that event, the mongoose turned half golden. It was said that if the mongoose witnessed something similar, it would turn completely golden.

However, from the Yadavas, Charudeshna pointed out that Yamaraj had violated the maryada of a guest by just demanding non stop everything from his host, and what the mongoose had witnessed was not a great act by a brahmin, but a mean act by a deva. On Charudeshna saying this, the golden half of the mongoose turned grey as a result of this exposure that what he had witnessed wasn't a virtue, while the other half of the mongoose turned golden, as a result of it's realizing the value of the Ashwamedha yagna. The mongoose felt pretty embarrassed and apologized to Bhima, and Dhaumya told it to go and witness a similar yagna if it wanted to turn completely golden 😆

Following the completion of the yagna, Bhima showered all his guests w/ great riches, and permitted them to leave. However, Balarama requested them all to converge @ Dwarka, particularly w/ their princes, b4 they returned to their capitals. There was an important event he decided to hold, and told them that his family as well as the Pandavas - being his cousins - would be hosting it. Accordingly, everyone headed over to Dwarka.
