Even salliyan who was actually nakul and sahadev's mama fought for the kauravas because he was tricked to grant Duryodhan his support in the war. This is why salliyan abandons Karna just when Karna needs him as he understood the treachery and had been word bound to support the side he abhorred.

A lot of good guys died warring for the bad side only because they were bound by their duty and word.

Shalya was not treacherous - he led the Kaurava army on day 18, killed Uttar on day 1 and did enough damage to the Pandava army. His part in the war was genuinely tragic.

But not Bheeshma, Drona, Kripa or Ashwatthama - they knowingly picked the side of evil

Excellent point about Bhishm in the above Shruti👏

As for Dhrid, I find him cunning a lot of times and that did of his character comes out clearly as the years pass by and his sons grow older..
Sanjay, his charioteer specially mentions how Dhrid speaks something when he actually means and wants something else when he starts telling Dhrid about the kurushetra war.

Dhrid's so called weakness was used as a smart weapon time and again. He sited his blindness to gain sympathy not just now but also with Draupadi after her vasthraharan to avoid his sons being cursed or killed.

I agree Vrish. Salliyan was not treacherous at all. I meant that Duryodhan tricked him and salliyan bound by his word, fought his own near and dear ones inspire of not wanting to.

I think the others especially Bheeshma were almost in the same boat. Yes, they could have taken the offer to switch sides but they were bound yo a Hastinapur and it's king..

He was king today as well, but Bheeshma browbeat him into doing what he wanted. Had the real Bheeshma been like that, he could have done so many things, like stopped the vastraharan, forced the return of Indraprastha, even forced Duryodhan to be sent into vanvas

I think with time, Bheeshma grew older and Durri grew up to become more head strong!!
As a child, Bheeshma could terrify him...but then Durri himself grew up to be big and powerful Maha Yoddha!! He could hardly browbeat him in the way he had done the day before...And Dhittu ofcourse, with the grown up Durri, grew stronger and more powerful to override Bheeshma...

May be when all 106 of the grew up Bhishma thought, they will fight for their rights & the deserving one will be given too. He saw Pandavas are capable of handling these 100 Kauravas, so allowed them to be on their own. Krishna's support, guidence was a major strength for them.
Earlier during Vichitravirya's time he played major role. With Dhrit & Pandu, he made it sure, all their sons will get proper education. After Yudhisthir was declared Yuvaraj, his role reduced.

As per Ekta's MB ...Amba gave curse to Bhishma that like herself...one day there would be public insult of her Kulvadhu in front of his eyes but he would not able to say anything.

That's why Bhishma could not say anything during vashtraharan

Bheeshm,Drona and kripacharya didnt knowingly take kauravas side they were bound by duty and oath that is the tragedy of MB.They gave more importance to their oath and duty than to dharam which was a mistake and which is why God himself was willing to let these great men be killed .
Krishna ji had sworn never to take up arms in MB war yet when Arjun was unwilling to fight he called his sudarshan chakra and said if Arjun isnt willing to fight then he will which scared arjun and he agreed not sure if this happened after or before the Geeta gyan but it did.Krishna ji did that to show to Bheeshm that dharam is greator than any oath which Bheeshm failled to understand. That was his mistake and he faced the consequences but he was still largely a great and strong willed man
Besides you cant always fight for others especially when others keep making mistakes. If Bheeshm fought for pandavas yesterday as they are young and innocent children. But during the dice hall game they werent young or inncoent yudhishtir himself made a mistake by betting draupadi so there wanst much Bheeshm could do.I mean like i said you cant always fight for otheres when others arent willing to fight for themselves

Okay, finally watched the entire week's episodes. I had already commented on Drona & Duhsala, so I'll discuss the poisoning and subsequent episodes.

I can see people complaining about the poisoning being dragged out, but this was a major event, and so it was what I enjoyed. They dramatized it much more, particularly by showing Arjun unsuccessfully search for Bhima. The underwater footage was awesome. Although Nagraj looked funny, but the ancestry they got right. Although one thing - if Bhima is part Naga due to Surasena, same is true about Yudhisthir & Krishna, yet they didn't have those same qualities of anger that Bhima did. But whatever

One thing though - while being creative, they almost depicted Bhima committing borderline blasphemy - feasting @ his own shradh. Oh, and can they please spare us or cut the Kunti-Gandhari scenes - I just can't stand them, and they're not in the books either. Just show Kunti. Although Duryodhan serving Bhima was funny, and the look on Shakuni's face was priceless.

While Friday's episode would make one cheer for Bheeshma, it's almost like my KMMK where they've made things completely up. Subahu died & Shakuni became king - Bheeshma didn't do any Machiavellian moves to get him to quit. Also, had Kunti ever actually threatened to leave Hastinapur, they'd have let her, and she'd probably have gone to Dwarka and let the Pandavas form an alternate power structure w/ Krishna. But in fact, the Pandavas were simply told to be silent about this - no hue & cry, as was shown here. Nor was there any controversy regarding whether the Kurus could go w/ Drona or not, as they showed here. And Bheeshma reading Dhritarashtra the riot act - couldn't have done it, since the latter was king.

I liked Bhima's humor being shown here, but was disappointed @ only his fav bro for this serial - Nakul - sharing it. Arjun asking him why isn't he angry, Yudi talking to him about forgiveness and Kunti, for once, talking sense. One thing - after this incident, there were more incidents of Duryodhan trying to poison Bhima & Yuyutsu warning Bhima about it, but since Bhima was now immune, he just drank it, baffling Duryodhan. 😆

So next week starts Drona's role. I've never liked the character, and he looks like a pretty shady figure as depicted in this serial.

Whether a character is not to your liking is irrelevant, and doesnt change the fact of the roles they play in the story. One might find aspects or certain actions disagreeable however each character is there for reason. I like Gandhari for being able to endure grief that her sons, brother n husband put in her path, the woman was trapped because 1. She was attached to her relations and bore a duty towards them and 2. Because she bore that duty it conflicted with her innermost beliefs and virtues and we can't forget that she was a devout Shiva worshiper. Out of duty as a wife n mother she sought to guide her son n husband for their own betterment as well as benefit of all concerned whenever she could but to no avail for they were both adamant, egoistic and stubborn and ultimately she had to accept their choices, sadly she was performing her duty from a passive sense, eventually accepting or even caving in due to her husband/son wishes, and thus she was unable to accomplish higher duty that led to the greater good. she may have blocked out the world from her vision but she was very much aware of the wrongdoings around her though never in any position where she could do much otherwise due to this precise conflict she suffered through, question is how much power must she have had if she ffailed in influencimg truth and good to her husband n son. Or was it simply that her duty as a mother/wife outshined the greater duty towards humanity @ large ie the pressure of going against her familys choices, thus repressed her will to defy the opposition that was against her uppermost values.
Which brings me to another point on the idea philosophy of utilitarianism which bears close similarity to what Mahabharata teaches. More on this comparison later..
