ONE PART REMAINING! WILL BE UPDATED TOMORROW!
Chapter Twenty-Three - Revelations
We were in the family room. I sat across from her father and she sat on the couch to our right.
"You have no idea what I went through looking for you Rishabh."
I didn't say anything. I didn't want to.
"Your father...I didn't take away his property. He signed it in my name. He transferred everything into my name after some men threatened to kill him."
"Why. Why you. Why not my mother or I? And why was he being threatened."
"Let me finish."
I grew tense but quieted myself.
"The threat was directed towards your mother as well. He feared if anything happened to either of them, you'd be left alone. People in the world these days...if anyone so much as found out that you had so much property at such a young age, they would've easily taken advantage of you."
"Who wanted to kill my parents."
"Drug dealers."
"Dru...DRUG DEALERS? Are you accusing my father of dealing?!"
I stood, angered by the accusation.
"Rishabh, sit down! I'm not done."
"RK..."
I looked at Madhu, she was the only reason I was even still there. So I took a deep breath and sat back down.
"Before you jump up again, I need you to understand that the reason you and Madhu were separated was due to your father. We fought...because he refused to quit drugs. Now my wife and I didn't want any bad influence on Madhu. We also tried our best to convince him to stop but he became defensive. So we left. It was a couple years later when he contacted me again. He sounded distressed. He said that if anything ever happened to him and his wife, I'd have to take you in. So I agreed. I also made him explain why he was speaking in such a way. Turns out, he owed the dealers an amount he could not afford. It was just days afterwards that I read about their passing in the paper..."
He had to stop speaking. He was choking on his own words as he became emotional. He had his eyes on the ground. By this point, my body had become numb. I saw Madhu wiping away at tears herself. A tear also threatened to fall from my eye.
"I went to look for you...but you were already gone. I searched for you for years. Then came a point that I would no longer be able to recognize you, so I gave up. I couldn't. I swore to hold onto the property papers until you came along so that I could hand them over to their rightful owner, but I had no more hope left after years of nothing. Little did I know that you were right in front of me now."
I wiped away a tear and looked him straight in the eyes.
"How do I know you're not lying?"
"I swear on Madh..."
"No. Don't swear on her."
"How would you like me to prove myself then?"
"You don't have to. You just did."
The fact that he'd swear on Madhu, his own blood-daughter, who he clearly loved more than his own life, was more than enough proof for me. It felt like my whole life had been a lie by that point. I stood off the couch and turned to head towards my room in silence. I needed to be alone to process everything. I heard Madhu beginning to follow after me, but then heard her father's voice.
"He needs to be alone right now Madhu."
I headed straight towards my room and fell onto my bed. I closed my eyes and spent the rest of the restless night in the same position.
