Legacy and Longing: Inspiring Leaders/Heroes You Want to See Back!
Part 2
As RK made his way out of the house, he called Bittuji to find out if he had any news on Madhu's whereabouts? Bittuji informed him that he had spoken to one of the spot boys who said he thought he saw Bhabhiji at the studio. RK reached Sitara Studio in no time, running in but seeing no immediate signs of Madhu. As he made his way through each and every corridor and room searching, he heard whimpers coming from his dressing room. He slowly opened the door to find Madhu sitting on the floor in the corner hugging her knees, her head in buried in her arms sobbing. RK took survey of the room and noticed the disaster he had made of it when Simmi, the original heroine couldn't come to the press conference. He carefully stepped in the room and made his way towards Madhu. He knelt in front of her, softly touched her arms to get her attention but she ignored him.
"Madhu" he shook her a bit to get her attention.
Without looking up Madhu replied in a broken voice, "Leave me alone RK. I just want to be alone."
Without saying anything further knowing she needed time to absorb all that Pabho had said, RK slid down next to her and sat in silence.
After about an hour or so, during which RK unsuccessfully tried to console Madhu, her sobs turned into barely audible whimpers. The sound of RK's cell phone ringing finally caused Madhu to look up and hear RK's side of the conversation.
"Hello Ma. Yes, I found her. No, she is with me. No Ma, she is okay. We will come home soon Ma. Don't worry I will take care of her." With that RK disconnected the call.
"You should go home, Ma will be worried," spoke Madhu.
"I'm not going without you," was RK's quick reply.
"RK, please I need some time to think and to myself," Madhu pleaded.
"I haven't said anything, Biwi. Take all the time you need but I am not going without you. I will sit here quietly till you are ready," explained RK.
At that Madhu stood up and began to walk but immediately winced in pain as her leg gave out. Thankfully, RK's reflexes were quick; he grabbed Madhu before she fell. He up turned up a chair and made her sit as he went to find the source of her injury. Her foot had a deep gash; most likely she had cut it on one of the broken pieces of glass from the vase or the mirror. RK used a piece of cloth from a curtain to bandage her foot to stop the bleeding. Once the temporary bandage was in place, Madhu began to walk out of the room. She limped her way almost to the door before she nearly lost her balance; RK was behind her like a shadow and quickly held her before she fell. As soon as RK steadied her, she pushed his arms away, "I am fine. I can do it on my own."
RK's cocky smirk graced his face, "I know you can do it but I have the right to you carry you too, remember Biwi" as he picked her up in his arms and carried her to the car.
Madhu's jaw dropped the moment; RK picked her up but remained quiet knowing he will do whatever he damn well pleases no matter what she says.
As RK began driving, Madhu spoke, "I want to go home, RK."
"We are going home," replied RK.
"Not RK Mansion, I want to go to the chawl," elaborated Madhu.
"She doesn't consider RK Mansion her home," the thought assaulted RK.
If he was shocked or hurt, he schooled his features well. He immediately turned the car around and headed to towards his sasural.
Madhu stepped out of the car but before getting out, poked her head in to speak to RK, "Go home, Ma will be worried. I will call you tomorrow." She shut the door, limped her way up the stairs and into her home.
RK sat stunned in his seat, too shocked to react to Madhu's uncaring tone. He knew she was hurt by what Pabho said, he knew she needed time to process everything but a part of him wanted to wrap her up in his arms to protect her from the hurt she was feeling. He wanted to do something to make it all go away but he was so helpless. He couldn't understand what he could do to fix this. He wouldn't go back on his word; he wasn't going home without her. He got out of the car, made his way up the stairs. He made himself comfortable on the bench outside of the Malik residence for the long night ahead. RK didn't know when he had dozed off till someone shook him awake. RK rubbed the sleep out of his eyes to see a confused Roma standing over him.
"Superstar, what are you doing here?" Roma questioned.
"Madhu is here" RK said pointing to the closed door behind him.
"What's Glycerine doing here? RK, is everything okay?" Roma asked panic seeping into her voice.
RK explained everything that happened at home with Madhu and tried very uneffectively in calming Roma down. She was ready to take off Pabho's head for making her Glycerine cry, no one did that to her little girl. Luckily, RK's quick explanation that Pabho has been kicked out of RK Mansion calmed the raging bull. Once calm, Roma was ready to barge in and talk to Madhu but upon RK's insistence to give her some space, she let it be. Soon Roma left to be at the studio but Madhu had yet to open the door, for a short time RK paced restlessly. When Madhu finally opened the door another hour later, she found RK leaning over the railing outside deep in thought. "Why couldn't he just listen to her? Why does she have to be so damn stubborn? I guess if he wasn't all of those things, he wouldn't be him and she wouldn't love him as much," mused Madhu.
"RK" she called him hesitantly. The relief that washed over him when she called out his name nearly took her breath away. He had been waiting for her all this time. A smile crept upon her face at the thought. Madhu stood aside inviting RK in. RK hovered behind the closed door, not knowing what to say or do after Madhu's behavior last night.
"Sit, I will make breakfast," Madhu stated as she went into the kitchen and RK seated himself at the dining table.
Soon enough breakfast was served and eaten in silence; neither knew how to broach the subject. RK was worried he would say something wrong, thus solidifying Madhu's fears; whereas Madhu worried one wrong word against his family could potentially alienate RK from her forever. Madhu decided distance would be the best at the moment till things shimmered down. Too bad for RK never did anything the conventional way.
"RK, go home! Ma will be worried," Madhu spoke calmly hiding her inner turmoil.
"And I told you already, I'm not going home without you, Biwi," RK replied just as calmly.
And so the standoff began. After about ten minutes of silence, Madhu exasperated with the situation got up from the dining table and made her way to the bed. She knew RK enough to know that he wouldn't blink first. She buried her head in her hands in frustration then suddenly she felt two hands on her shoulders.
RK knelt in front of Madhu, took her hand in his and looked into her eyes. He needed her to believe what he was about to say, for her sake and for their future.
"Madhu, you know you didn't do anything wrong. There is nothing you have to be ashamed of or worry about. You did what you did for me, for us. What Pabho said and what she believes is completely irrelevant to me. You know I don't believe in all that, I also know that you do. I know you believe what Guruji said but you forget you yourself have proven everything they have said wrong. How many times and how many ways have you saved my life? You have saved me in ways that I didn't even know I needed to be saved. You are my life, Madhu; my life won't be my destruction. Forget what Guruji said, forget what Pabho has said, have faith in our love that we will overcome every obstacle in our path. RK Mansion is my house and as my wife, you are the mistress of the house. I know what Pabho did and I told her specifically that she can't dictate who stays in my life and in my home. I told her if she can't accept you then she has no place in our home or in my life. Pabho is going back to the ashram this morning. Madhu I know you care about everyone but you need to look out for yourself too. I know you love me and people know that, they will try to use that against you and us if you let them. We are both of guilty of this, when someone tries to hurt me, you lose your ability to think clearly and I'm the same way when it comes to you. Our fears take over and we don't think clearly. Do you think I would be able to live without you? Madhu, our love is strong enough that we can survive any calamities from our stars. You can't always protect me, even though that's your first instinct. We are married, you didn't marry me to just make me happy and be miserable and I didn't marry to make you happy and make myself miserable; we married to make each other happy. So no more tears, no more hiding your pain and hurt from me. Our relationship has survived me so nothing else can hurt us now," RK concluded on a light note hoping to make her smile.
Madhu looked into RK's eyes with tears, "I'm scared that I will you lose you because of me. No matter what I do, I seem to be the reason you get hurt."
RK got up and engulfed her securely in arms, whispering sweet nothings to calm Madhu down.
RK pulled away a bit with his trademark smirk in place said, "I didn't know my Biwi was scared of anything. I thought nothing would scare my Jungali Billi after surviving a janwaar like me." RK statement did its job and made Madhu laugh.
"If you have finished cleaning my shirt, shall we go home? Ma is likely worried sick that I have done something to her precious Madhu," RK chuckled as they made their way towards to the door.
In all the chaos, both had forgotten about Madhu's hurt foot till she screamed in pain on her way to the door. Before Madhu could say or do anything, RK picked her up, "Don't worry Biwi, I'm strong enough to carry you as long as you need me to."
