The story would not have moved towards the so called, fake or real, R.K and Madhubala love story if R.K had not put a condition of marrying him in return for saving her foster father's life. It was so wrong at so many points. He did not do so out of sympathy or empathy but purely to avenge the four slaps received from Madhubala. But, then that was accepted because of dark character and his dark, multi-layered ways.
There is no wrong or right characters in a story but all are characters and it's just that some characters are sketched more influential than others. In a story, there is nothing wrong to have a Don and make the female protagonist display her human concern for him. Plus, this show is Bollywood inspired and we have stories of underworld dons and their love for Bollywood divas.
Madhubala is not a real person but a figment of a writer's imagination and she will not behave according to the norms of our society but according to the norms set for the fictitious world by the writer. Getting the Don arrested may happen in the real world because there is no story to take forward but if that happens in the fictitious world, the story may not have its twists and conflicts. Our lives are not that interesting and that is why we are not characters in a world of fiction.
P.S.: The story cannot stop moving ahead because of one of the leads absence. Blame the demands of the daily story telling and not the characters for showing what you dislike.
