Suicide Watch
"Is your husband coming with you madam?"
Madhu is busy contemplating either my mistakes or nothing at all when the driver shakes her out of the trance. Not a gentle push but, a violent shrug. Or, that is what I infer.
"Don't touch her!" I scream.
She spreads her arms like the wings of a phoenix and guards the man.
"Go outside, I am coming".
She is finally looking at me. After days of not talking she bids adieu.
"You are no longer allowed to protect me from hurt. You did an excellent job when we were together. Now, I free you of all responsibility. Do as you please".
She steps a foot outside our door.
"Madhu"
Her moments halt.
"Goodbye Rishabh", she closes the door with a gentle turn of the knob.
Her fingers retreat and suddenly I see the train of her gown still swimming on the wooden floors. But, she is gone.
Bittuji, I have to call Bittuji.
"Bittuji, this tango instructor is no good. She is asking me to wear some Zoro costume. Get me out of here and fast".
I shouted over the phone, as usual. Uh oh, she heard and boy was I embarrassed.
"I…didn't mean".
"Let's tango Zoro".
Her signature squint of the eyes appeared on and off. She was trying to suppress a stubborn thought. I could not resist asking.
"What is it?"
Madhu took a breath in so deep, she inhaled half of me inside, "Just that, you haven't given me a chance and you are quitting. I am ………… Shall we continue until Bittuji comes in?"
She had hit where it hurt. She had questioned my abilities, my determination and my ego would not have it. Any of it!
Madhu placed on of my hands on her waist and the other around her shoulder.
"I am not a quitter. I will find another instructor".
She shifted away from my touch and responded with a hint of cunningness in otherwise apologetic sentence
"Of course. I was not professional".
Was she trying to guilt me into staying? Whatever she was attempting, it was working.
"Okay fine. I will stay. Go on and do what you have to".
Out of the blue, a smile appeared…..straight and curved all at once. Still, symmetric. She had the ability to filter cynicism from happiness. She was genuine, bearing not a victory grin, not a smirk but a smile.
"What did you do this time Chief?"
My chubby assistant made his entry at just the wrong second.
"I did nothing Bittuji".
"I went to the studio and bhabhiji is hiding something. I could tell she is not happy. So, what did you do?"
"She did not tell you anything?"
I ask, knowing in my heart, this is how my Madhu is. She will hold in the shockwave of the biggest blasts. Because the day we married, she vowed that whatever happens between us, stays between us. She has been loyal from day one. I wish I could say the same about myself.
"I wish you could……… Count your blessings chief. What blunder did you commit?"
"I made a mistake. I cheated, Bittuji".
I know what is coming. He is angry at me. He wants nothing to do with me. I am alone and I am the cause of my misery. I am not ready to face him but, I have no choice.
"Not a mistake, a crime. You committed a disgusting act. I do not want to hear any explanation from you. All I want to know is how are you going to fix this mess?"
"I…….."
"I hate you Chief".
I don't know what to say. Best to listen because I deserve this and much more. I hate myself too, Bittuji.
"You are a monster".
Worse, I don't know what I am. If only it were Madhu and not you. I want to hear her speak. I want her to scream at me, to question me, confront me, do anything but stay quite.
"I asked her what happened. She smiled a little smile, you know that? Took every bone her body to force that strength. She is suffering because of you. Why? Why did you marry her?"
"Bittuji"
I pleaded. I don't know if I was expecting a hug or a slap but, I needed him. I needed somebody before I went insane.
"I am your assistant, not your friend. I thought I was but, I guess you proved me wrong. Quite frankly, I don't want to be your assistant either".
"I need you Bittuji".
"I am here Chief. What can I do you for?"
His comment invited a laugh from Madhubala. The old man had an aura about him, something that made young girls surprisingly comfortable. I don't if it was a good thing but, Bittuji never took advantage.
"I am good, thanks. The situation resolved itself".
"So, you are saying I can buy a bag of chips and watch you dance?"
Was he flirting with my girl? In my presence? Sneaking little bum!
"Don't you have anything better to do?"
I gave him my get out look but, he seemed distracted. Who wouldn't be? Madhubala's school girl looks preceded her lady-like mannerism. From the little I know of Bittuji's taste in women, he liked both. Too bad for him, I had marked my territory.
"If I need time to pull my thoughts together, imagine what she must be feeling. I am not in a state to forgive you but, I am willing to help. I will come over and we can discuss the next steps".
"Thank you Bittuji".
"Pack up and leave Chief. That is your best bet at redemption, if at all".
I listen to the dust in the air, the sound of murderous shards, all pointing at me. Because I am a criminal and everything in here reminds me of the deed. She will never forgive me.
I do not expect her to.
Not after
I
Tainted
Our
Marital
Bed.
I don't deserve happiness.
I wish death could come by and take the pain away.
"How dare you think it was this easy?"
Bittuji nurses my slit wrists.
"How dare you think of leaving her alone to suffer?"
I come in and out of consciousness.
"How dare you think of a way out? You must pay the price for your deed. Tell me, who is this woman?"
He dials the ambulance.
I wake up in a hospital bed surrounded by flowers and get well soon greetings. I search for her scent. She does not come.
"Was she here at all?"
"Yes, the love does not go away in a fortnight".
Bittuji cringes with every phoneme he speaks. But, all I hear is Madhu. My Madhu still cares.
"The pain does not go away either Chief. I couldn't look into her eyes. Quite possibly, I am responsible for this. I am accountable for you and I am ashamed".
"She……the woman…..she is. I don't want ruin her…"
"What? Now you think to protect that woman over my bhabhi…."
He clenches his fists and heads out the door leaving me alone in the suicide watch room.
What have I done?
A/N: I am going to mars for the week so, do not wait up. These are the updates till Friday I suppose (Tentative). Do let me know if you want more jokes or if even agree with my humor. I think one lacks the funny. My point is, do tell me if is too monotonous :) I did put in some chemistry jokes in the Madhu one if that floats your boat. Bye!!
