I get what you mean. Even I skipped through some parts that I felt were a bit um..not my style lol.
But its a show about Bollywood. And is Bollywood if not melodramatic? Especially in the 90's.
No doubt it'll get more subtle and to our taste later on. This episode was like one of those long drawn out prologues that aired before the opening credits ran. Like "Karan Arjun" or earlier films. Half and hour into the film it would finally start😆😆. Thats what I took today's episode to be. The dramatic and fighter backstory of M's mother.

I'm twenty minutes into the show..

So this Balraj dude, has issues. And his mom treats him like a dog. Don't say anything, Ballu. Calm down, Ballu. Shh, Ballu, shh. She even pets him! And he growls..

I agree about the dai lady part. She was great. But then, this is like the fifty bagillionth time she's portrayed a role like this. Not the dai part, but her mannerisms and such. And who the heck finds out the gender of a child by getting a pregnant lady to walk around and feeling her belly? Even if this is supposed to by 1991, it's kind of unrealistic..

Why does the mom keep wiping paan juice from her lips? It's unattractive, like the rest of her..

Dude, but if the dai looks back at the door before she discloses the news, why doesn't she just close the door?

The BG music is murdering my eardrums.. I can barely hear the dialogues..

If she had closed the door, they wouldn't have to act so shocked.

And for the song, check out this post.

Yeah, the songs were newer than the setting. 1993 and 2012.. lol

Finally! It's done! I made it through the whole episode!
My sentiments are with you, Boogz. The sets were awesome. The actors need some breaking in, but hopefully, that'll get better in the following episodes..

analysis ... Hmm ... Something am not good at ... Lolz
but first day first show, so i should give my views.
I read few analysis n few of them say that the drama was too much ... Yup, it was a little more ...but maybe coz the makers are saying its film you're watching like a daily soap ... Balraj... Creep ...eeks ... he did justice to his role ... I know animals like him do exist and act very much like he did, his mom...wah ...what a mother ... Women like her are there too ... Who support their sons in their bad deeds ... Infact they are the ones who provoke them more ...

The item dance ... Very much desi ... But not that vulgar as it is in reality ...
Real face of backward society with drama element.

Padmini (Pallavi) was good ... And Dai maa (sushmita mukherjee) wow lady, you did a great job. *claps*

Well this is not the show abt ... there'll be a leap, n then the real story starts.

BG ... I dont know anything abt it ... Rofl ... Sometimes it was irritating, but suits that jerk Balraj very much.

I would say it was good start.

Thanks for the pm Amruta ... Love you.

Faria!

I am so glad you opened a thread because like many on here, I was looking for a familiar ID and an open mind and here you are!

About the episode, I didn't really get into it. And you said you felt like stopping and reading the WU and well, confession: I did. Please don't use my head for target practice. 😕😆

I think a big part of the problem was that I was not able to watch it live because my grandmother is staying with us and she has her favourite regional show on at that time. I had to tune in through youtube and I just did not feel compelled to keep going and silently made the decision to read WUs and wait until DD's entry to start watching.

Also, the other issue I had was that it was an hour long. I think I would have preferred it just to be two episodes on successive days. It would have drawn me to the next episode, not knowing if she managed to escape or not.

That being said, there were things I liked a lot, concepts and ideas that they introduced. I thought it was really interesting that they started the story off in a feudal context and that that is where MB is from, but she will never really know it. I am interested to see how this background and this home which she escaped in her mother's womb will play a part in the shaping of her character. I am also interested to see the contrast between her and Trishna as a result of it...

I also liked all the references to the dramatic cliches of Bollywood being seamlessly incorporated, like a mother's love being somehow supernatural in its power, item songs and trains.

I agree that the performances I saw (in the first half that I watched) really gave that aura of darkness and despair that punctuated so many movies just before the sugar syrup era, starting with HAHK. But to be honest, my personal preference lies more in the direction of sugar syrup 90s than kitschy and violent 90s. 😆 So I will have to see how things progress as MB grows up...

i love discussion threads!!coming to the amazing labyrinth of negative emotions today :

Basically , the first episode made its unique stand of an ultimate trademark because 1 hour of a visual treat simply takes you to another world...a dimension of a casual slice of enthriving violence..a rigid roller coaster of horror , morbidity and appalling snaps of domestic violence that give the treatments of savage fathers and grandmothers another shade of why the world is not worth of humans not being worth of its stature and importance...Balraj gives you so much of disgust and horror that you actually want to hug the actor playing him. What a symbol of a savage , untamed animal without basic humanistic sense which is further triggered by his ambitious and heartless mother that shivers within another world where there is streaks of just violence and sickness that seeps into your heart...Trishna's symbol of innocence and Padmini's three dimensional developing character that gave us shades of courage and helplessness...Balraj peculiar mannerisms of torturing Padmini are just worth mentioning..the fake smile smeared over his evil features as he walks towards her...his black pseudo capricious humor overshadowing his monstrous outrage that plays out as an aftermath...WHAT A PERFORMANCE..gives you shivers all over your body...his initial unpredictable touch upon her hair and choli and the sudden pull of her hair strands and the ultimate result of pushing her towards the furnace...what a mind blasting scene..acting and performance wise..hats off to the actors...Madhubaala really seemed worth the wait..and thank god for that. The violence and the peculiar monstrous actions gets to you and climbs all over your senses and even makes you turn your head at times where there are scene which pour out disgust..but it cannot..no matter what..make you change the channel to any other programme. Sab shows ki toh ab band baj ni waali hai , seriously.

Loved seeing it live upto the hype it had created. The opening credits was very good, DD sure got a lot of mileage from the opening credits...she really deserves it. The part where I had an issue was

1. The Jashan...It is always male dominated, none of the females are ever allowed to watch, so how come the MOM was there, that too egging her son along!!!!
2. The editing part during the chase...

Awww sucks, am willing to over look all the bloopers coz I am mighty pleased with the opening credit 😃

@Samana - :D Boy am I glad to see you here! One of the best analysers on board. I started this thread so more neutral viewers like you, me and many others aren't afraid of speaking up without getting bashed left and right.

@Austenrox- You managed to sum up all the characters in eloquent words - much better than myself 😆

@Annie- I sort of zoned out during the chase so I didn't notice the editing.
