How do you relate to your character?
Friday, April 20, 2007 11:39:52 IST

I do not relate to her at all! I am quite different from her in real life. I am short tempered

Neha Bamb
Actress

</>

Q. How did television happen to you?
I got the first call for auditions from Balaji productions after someone noticed me at their office, when I went to meet a friend of mine who is a part of the team. But I could not give the auditions as I was down with jaundice. After my recovery, Balaji called me again for an audition. I appeared for it and was selected for the role.

Q. Apart from television, what other projects have you been involved with?
I have done a considerable amount of work in the South Indian film industry. Apart from commercials, ramp walks and teleserials, I have done one film in Kannada and five in Telugu

Which are your ongoing projects?
I am shooting for my next Telugu movie in Hyderabad, which will be my 6th, and I am doing the serial Mayka. These two projects absorb a lot of my time.

Q. Tell us something about your character in Mayka.
My character is a very sweet, talkative girl who has a sudden major change in her life.

Q. How do you relate to your character?
I do not relate to her at all! I am quite different from her in real life. I am short tempered

Q. How did you feel when you faced the camera for the first time?
I was petrified! I wasn't able to say a single line of my dialogue. My make-up and hair itself took 3 long hours! I was only 15 years old then and was doing a South Indian movie with big stars. It meant a lot to me but I was so nervous that I could not utter a word.

Q. What are your future plans?
I would like to continue working, as long as the work that comes my way, interests me. I am grateful that I have accomplished so much at the young age of 21.

Vivan Bathena

Actor Vivan Bathena, who was last seen in 'Kumkum' (Star Plus) is all set to enter 'Maayka' (Zee) as the suave photographer Shabd. His character is supposed to reflect attitude and hence the creative team decided upon shooting his introductory scene showing him step out of his swish sports car.

The production unit had arranged for a car but it didn't arrive on the sets at the last minute. The unit was hassled over getting a car at a short notice until Vivan offered to use his personal car, a Toyota MR2. Vivan says, "I didn't mind using my car for the shoot. The unit had deadlines to meet and we couldn't wait for another car to be arranged."

But how does Vivan, a model turned actor have a penchant for sports car? Vivan laughs as he replies, "My father and my uncle are former professional bike racers. I have
grown on the tracks literally! I too love racing although I didn't take it up professionally. But I take part in the speed run every year and have won several awards in the 'under 2000 cc' category." Racing apart Vivan also takes interest in film watching and its making. He owns about a thousand DVDs of some of the best films. "I intend to make a film some day," he says.

But, what about his primary occupation, modelling? "I have given it up. I don't find it intellectually stimulating. I am interested in acting on television at the moment. I believe there is a proper time for every thing one does in life and I think I have passed the stage of modelling," he shares.

So what did he like about his character Shabd and how does the rather queer name signify his character? "It's a classy character. He keeps his conversations short and crisp as he often says, 'Shabd, naam hi kaafi hai (the name is enough)'."

Vivan's need for speed

Vivan Bathena was to make an elaborate entry as Shabd in the serial Maayka- for his debut in the serial the production house wanted him to arrive in a sports car. However they didn't manage to get one so Vivan allowed them to shoot with his own sports car. Vivan will play the lead role opposite Mahi (Neha Bamb) in the show.

Vivan says: "For the introduction shot they required a sports car but on that day some technical problems occurred so shooting couldn't take place. The next time they asked me to use my sports car and I agreed. I'm more comfortable with my car. I am habitual to driving my car. It looks good as well so there was no problem in using it. I mean why not? I have a Toyota MR2. It's a 1988 model and it's red in colour. I bought the car three years ago from someone who owned it in Mumbai. It looks like a mini Ferrari for me. It's like poor man's Ferrari or my version of the Ferrari if I would have one. Maybe one day I'll buy the real one but right now this is good enough for me."

Vivan provided his own car free of cost for the shoots saying, "I wouldn't charge them for something so silly. I would not like to discuss the money aspect for the car and other stuff. I have only one sports car. But hopefully down the line I'll have more."

The actor can't stop gushing about his 'mini-Ferrari'
"I like everything about my car! I like the way it looks, the way it sounds and the way it drives. I like to feel its speed. That is an adrenaline rush."

Vivan is possessive of his 14 lakh car
"It has facilities which every normal car has. If I want to go from one location to the other it gets me faster; that is all. It's different from any other sports car because of its looks. It's vintage- a classic. It reflects one's attitude and shows how that person is passionate about cars. It's a difficult car to maintain because parts are not easily available but some way down the line you have to be passionate about it.

I'm very possessive about my car. Nobody else drives my car except me. I don't mind people touching my car as long as there is no harm done to it. I have it polished it once a week. I do a routine maintenance of my car myself- small mechanical jobs here and there I can take care of myself. I always have my toolkit and my music there. My girlfriend was the first person to sit in my car."

Racing is in his blood
"I have a passion for racing since my childhood. My family from my dad's side was majorly into racing. My dad's brothers are into racing. He participated in the MRF team and in they won the Malaysian Grand Prix and stuff like that. Ashley and Cherry Bathena are their names. I have literally grown up on the track. I have always had a passion for speed. Earlier I could never have supported it financially because motor sport is the most expensive professions. Now that I have the ability to fulfill some of my ambitions I can go ahead with it."

About his role in Maayka
"I'm playing the character of Shabd Sareen who is a rich photographer from the UK. He is like a breath of fresh air in the show. He takes things very lightly and is very good at his job. He is admired by everyone around him and women especially love him. That reflects in his attitude; in the way he speaks with women. He finally comes across Neha Bamb's character Mahi and in her he finds something different. It is something he has never encountered in the past women as he was used to women drooling all over him. Mahi is different and that's the factor which attracts him. It's a lead role in Maayka right now. It's going to be a hero's role. We shot about two episodes and we'll finish couple of episodes by the end of this week."

Vivan is also playing the lead role of Druv in Kumkum. He played an important role in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi as well as many other serials. Vivan won the title of Grasim Mr. India in 2001 before he moved on to serials.

Vivan flamboyant in Maayka

This model-turned-actor accepts that he has been lucky in the television industry. Vivan Bhatena was the winner of 'Gladrags Mr. India in 2001' and has not looked back since then.

After his appearance in Falguni Pathak's music video- 'Maine Payal Hai Chankai', Vivan became a heart throb.

Earlier seen in serials like 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi' as Abhishek, 'KumKum' as Dhruv and Zee TV's weekly show 'Time Bomb', Vivan is all set to make his entry into another Zee daily, 'Maayka'.

This time he will be playing a character named Shabd Sareen and will be Neha Bamb aks Maahi's love interest. "I play an NRI who is flamboyant yet suave. I have now returned to India to live with my family but my attitude is the same and has not changed" informs Vivan. He is a photographer with a lot of attitude and falls in love with Maahi at the first sight.

That's not all; Vivan will be using his own sports car for his introduction shot. "Yes the director wanted to use a car which suits my personality so I suggested that I used my car" says Vivan. He is the proud owner of this flashing red Toyota sports car for a few years. Though he is possessive about his car, he is willing to use it for the shot.

Cool dude cool car, what say!

My role in Maayka is of a hero: Vivan Bathena

Q: You have entered 'Maayka' which is a Punjabi serial. So how comfortable are you with Punjabi?
A: Though I am a half Parsi and half Maharashtrian it was not so difficult for me. As it is a Hindi show, the beautiful sets and a different subject, in all it was very nice.

Q: Did you have to undergo any homework for it?
A: No, not really. As I said it is a Hindi show so there is not too much Punjabi in it. However, I did speak to a few of my Punjabi friends just to learn their customs.

: How did 'Maayka' happen to you?
A: Actually I had auditioned for the show 4 months back and it was dilly-dallying. Then last month I got a call again from the producer that the channel wants to meet me. After that I had to give another look test and it happened, finally. (Laughs)

Q: What led you take you up 'Maayka'?
A: Well, It is a fun character. Easy going who lives his life to fullest, an energetic guy who also has some grey shades in his persona. Just like a Casanova. Though I related to the character in person too except the earrings and the accessories he wears, I am not a Casanova.

Q: Are you still there in 'Kumkum'?
A: Yes, I am very much there. At present it's the sisters track going on so there is less work for me, hence I am focusing on 'Maayka'. However, I will be back soon in the scene.

Q: How is the experience working with Neha Bamb?
A: So far so good. She is a good co-star who always makes me feel comfortable. We also have a few common friends so it didn't take much fine-tuning with her.

Q: You have been model, been in a music video, done VJing for MTV and also done serials? Which of these have you liked doing the most?
A: Of course acting. It was a dream since beginning. I always wanted to be an actor. I am also looking forward to direct my own film one day (laughs), that only if my acting career doesn't do well.

Q: Is the film career in the offing for you?
A: Yeh! Of course! I did a small part in an upcoming Yasraj movie 'Chak de'. It is a very interesting character. I hope people like my acting skills and this may result in more offers for me. It is scheduled to release in July-August.

Q: Are you looking forward to doing anchoring?
A: I have recently hosted the GIFA film awards in Malaysia. It was all fun. I also have a few offers from some TV channels. Let see how it comes up.

Q: You have been in the entertainment industry for some time now. What changes have you noticed?
A: Well, it has become bigger day by day. There is more scope and also more opportunities. I have also noticed that there is a new batch of young directors coming up with brilliant ideas who have shed their inhibitions working with TV actors.

Q: What aren't we seeing you in a lead role?
A: Why not! My role in 'Maayka' is of a hero. Even if it is a TV show, everybody knows it has become such a powerful medium today. I agree obviously every actor wishes to work in films but for me it is good roles what matters. And television is doing very well for me.

Q: What else is there in the pipeline?
A: Well, there are a few anchoring offers and my role in 'Maayka' which is going to be significant in the coming episodes. (SAMPURN)

Ek glassey, do glassey...: Vivan in Maayka

Vivan Bhatena aka Shabd in Maayka takes his scenes a wee bit seriously these days. Recently, while shooting for a party sequence the actor guzzled down eight pitchers of beer in one take. This was not all. The actor was made to drink through the day over a period of three days! We can't even begin to imagine the hangover that followed. To quote Vivan, he is still recovering!

After the sequence, the female co-stars on the set were apprehensive about hanging around the actor in case the beer had some interesting side-effects, while the other unit members teased him mercilessly.

Vivan said, "We had to consume real alcohol as we had to take close-up shots, so we could not make do with other drinks. I downed a couple of mugs of beer but luckily, I did not get hammered. I made sure that my performance was up to the mark and the sequence was worth it. Just that I was feeling very sleepy, groggy and tired after the shot, so people thought I was sloshed. I am still recovering from the scene. My co-actors were teasing me and were waiting for me to fall down."

Says director Rajan Shahi, "We were shooting for the party sequence which required him to get drunk. He finished off eight pitchers of beer within a span of ten minutes in one take. I thought his stomach would burst after the sequence. He was on a liquid diet for the three days of shooting for the party sequence. He was on a high as I made him drink a lot through the day. Needless to say, he gave a brilliant performance in spite of all the alcohol."

Adds Rajan, "While other actors try to wriggle out of actually downing the booze, Vivan wanted to give the scene a complete authentic feel. He readily agreed to shoot non-stop for the sequence. Having beer early in the morning can be a bad experience."

The actors even had a collapse countdown going. There was also some fun betting on the sets.

The joke on the sets went that Vivan is doing a good job, only thanks to the beer! Perhaps he should drink more often?

Cheers to that.

Greed goddess!

Govinda's niece Aarti Singh, aka Soni in Maayka, polished off all the food required for three takes, in just one take. Shooting was stalled for two hours before more food could be bought, late at night

Slurp (burp!) : Aarti Singh

Aarti Singh aka Soni in Maayka is a die-hard foodie. The actress emptied a plate full of dal and rice in the very first take, when the scene was supposed to be shot over three long takes. The director was in a fix as it was late in the night and most of the restaurants were shut. The actors and the unit members had to wait for almost two hours for the food to be delivered again to the sets.

Says a source on the sets, "I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw Aarti emptying an entire thali comprising a bowl of dal, rice, a few chappatis, chana and a bowl of salad within a few minutes. Arti enjoys eating throughout the day and even when she is in her make-up room, she keeps on munching stuff."

Rajan Shahi, the director of the show, recalls "Aarti really likes to eat a lot. This time, she was really nervous before the shot and gobbled up the food on her plate, even before I could shout 'cut'. She looked really scared and nervous after this incident. It was funny and embarrassing at the same time. We had to stall the shooting for two hours before the food arrived."

When contacted, Aarti was too embarrassed to speak about the incident. She said, "We were shooting a sequence where I had to eat very little from the plate. But once I tasted the dal, I couldn't help finishing it off. The food was awesome. I kept enquiring the unit members about the restaurant where it was ordered from. Also, I couldn't resist the chana masala."

Guess it's time Govinda shared some weight-loss mantras with his dearest niece, apart from the acting tips.
