Aging Neelima experiments with make-up, pays heavy price!

Playing vamp is not at all an easy job. In fact it requires a lot of effort. Starting with Urvashi Dholakya aka Komolika of "Kasauti Zindagi Kay", who is being dubbed as the most famous (?) and perfect vamp, to Aanchal Dwivedi a ka Kaveri of "Saat Phere", all the vamps have one thing in common - style. Looks, consisting of weird make-up and dressing sense, complete with a li'l bit of skin show through backless blouses and naval revealing sarees form an important ingredient to be a perfect vamp.

And taking the cue from the veteran vamps, small time vamp Neelima a ka Durga of "Maayka" also decided to give other vamps a run for their money. But in the process of getting under layers of heavy make-up and revealing outfits, the ageing wannabe vamp forgot that the age and oomph were not on her side.

So, in an attempt to look hotter than other 'happening' vamps, Neelima made a fool of herself. It so happened that she tried putting on layers of make-up before going in front of the camera. And once under the arc light, her make-up did make her 'hot'; but not lookwise, rather she started getting burning sensation on her skin. Finally, Neelima had to wash off her make-up completely in order to get rid of the trouble. She got eye infection too.

When we tried to contact Nileema, she was initially not ready to talk about it. She shrugged off saying, "Is infection really a big issue?" No Neelima, its really isn't a big issue with us. After all, this is your skin, your eyes; so you know the best as to what to do with them. Just a piece of advice - don't experiment with your look, or else, you wouldn't even be able to play a mother few years down the line. Because today's audiences want even telly mothers to look glam.

I've got the moves

History Repeats Itself: Arti Singh
We're guessing it's in the genes. Govinda's niece Arti Singh (Soni of the Zee show Maayka) turned impromptu dance director when the appointed choreographer did not turn up to shoot the Pehla Nasha song (from Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander) for Maayka.

Incidentally, Arti has assisted choreographer Ganesh Acharya in the past.

We're told that a similar situation took place during the shoot of the original song in Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander.

Saroj Khan did not turn up for the shoot and Farah Khan was roped in to choreograph it. Is there an alternate career calling Arti?
'I'm not sure I can launch Nammo'

Even though Govinda is financially sound today, he doesn't want to put his acting career in jeopardy by producing a film for his daughter

Family Matters: Govinda with wife Sunita and daughter Narmada

Govinda's 19-year-old daughter Narmada has expressed her desire to become an actress.

She has even enrolled in an acting school. Says the proud father Govinda, "I'm thrilled that Narmada wants to act.

I have three nephews who are acting in films along with my niece, Aarti Singh, who is acting in the TV serial Maayka.

Nammo is the next family member to bite the bait."

Proud papa

When his teenage daughter informed him about her acting aspirations, Govinda says he was far from disappointed. "I recently walked the ramp with Nammo at Vikram Phadnis's fashion show.

It was a special moment for me, especially after what Nammo went through in that car accident last year. She has suffered a lot but her fighting spirit and confidence helped her get back on her feet.

I feel very proud that she listens to me and has transformed into an extremely confident girl. She was very different earlier," says the actor.

He stresses that Narmada's acting ambitions are a recent development, and that she'd never expressed a desire to act earlier. "However, I want both my children (he also has a 12-year-old son Yashvardhan) to be happy in whatever they choose to become.

Nammo has now joined Kishore Namit Kapoor's acting school to develop her skills. When she told me about her decision to join films, I told her to give it her best shot.

My family has gone through so much that I just want them to be happy. Even Sunita (his wife) is very happy."

Even though his pride in his daughter is palpable, Govinda is not sure about launching his daughter in his home banner.

"Let her first brush up on acting. She has a lot to learn. It's immaterial who launches her. She's a part of the film industry and has grown up here, so whoever launches her will be like family.

Everyone in the industry is like her uncle, friend, aunt or sister. Nammo is the industry's child. I am not sure if I will produce a film again after Sukh.

Now that I have come back as an actor with Bhagam Bhag and Salaam-E-Ishq, my career has been resurrected.

If I turn producer, it might affect my acting career and send out the wrongs signals," he says cautiously.

'I am deliberately keeping away from Bollywood'
Nishant

Says Govinda's niece and TV actor Aarti Singh, a Lucknow lass who believes in straight speak.

Aarti Singh has more to her credit than being Govinda's niece. This lovely lady is part a popular soap on TV and more interestingly for us, hails from neighbouring Lucknow!

Acting is in Aarti's genes and it was only natural for her to take it up as her profession. "My inspiration is my mama (Govinda) and my brother, who is also an established actor in the Bhojpuri industry," gushes this 20-something actor. "I used to spend my vacations in Mumbai and would attend my mama's film shoots. That's how my interest in acting developed. And then, my mother always wanted to see me on TV, so after completing my school, I relocated to Mumbai and joined an acting school," she relates.

Aarti accepts that she's had it easy till now and is grateful for it as well, "Thank God, I hardly had to struggle to make a place for myself in the industry," she says and goes on tell about her recent assignments, "I have just completed a Telugu movie which is yet to be released and am now acting in a serial." That's not all. Aarti is getting offers from various other banners as well. However, she is happy maintaining status quo.

So is Bollywood the next stop? "I am deliberately keeping away from Bollywood. Once there, you just cannot avoid skin show and I'm not too comfortable with that," she replies.

Professionally, the biggest achievement for Aarti would be to act along with mama Govinda. But work's not all that's on her mind; her private life is rocking as well! "Yes, I am seeing someone," she says with an honesty that's rare among actors. "Both of us are giving time to this relationship and let's see what happens," she adds, ruing the fact that the two of them are not able to meet as often as they would want to, living in different cities as they do. But Aarti is certain she would like to settle down in the next four or five years to "enjoy the essence of being a homemaker."

Despite tasting success in Mumbai, Aarti still misses her days back in Lucknow. "Lucknow is where my heart is. I still miss going to cafes with friends or enjoying basket chaat in Hazratganj, strolling around the city... just about everything," she reminisces. Being a Lakhnawi at heart, naturally she is impressed with the way the city is shaping up. "Kitna badal gaya hai sab yahan! Be it the mindset, the lifestyle or the infrastructure, everything has changed for good," she says before signing off.

Neha Bamb
Wedding bells will toll soon for Neha Bamb. Maahi Malhotra of Maayka will leave her maayka soon for her in-laws' place. TV fraternity's black books have been earmarked for December this year.

Neha seems to be over the moon about her soon-to-be wedding. And why not? She has been dating Rishi Zaveri, scion of a prominent business family in the city, since her college days. She says, "I met him first when I was in the eleventh standard. He was in the final year of college that time. We immediately hit it off. I kept mum about our relationship all this while as Rishi wasn't comfortable with me talking about it."

The 21-year-old actress says that she had her doubts initially about tying the knot too soon, but now she has come to terms with it. "Girls are packed off very early in our community (Marwaris). Actually, I feel I have already surpassed my sell-by date (laughs). At first I was sceptical, and took three months to deliberate over the matter, and decided to go for it," she says.

Once Neha made up her mind everything else was smooth-sailing. Since Rishi belongs to the Marwari community too, both families were more than delighted to settle for the chat mangni pat byah routine come December. The engagement will be held, in all likelihood, on December 4, and the wedding will follow soon."

Neha says that she will opt for a shaadi in Mumbai itself. "I would have loved to get married in Goa. The only problem is that guests wander off to sight-see, and I definitely don't want any such thing to happen. At my wedding, I want to be the centre of attraction. And hence Mumbai will be the venue for our wedding. It will be a typical Marwari wedding. Preparations have started in full swing already. Everybody is mighty enthusiastic about it."

Does it mean that Maayka will be her swan song on TV? She says, "I will continue to act come what may. I have had to struggle a lot to get where I am and I don't want to just give it all up so easily. Rishi understands my need to work. Plus, things seem to be looking up on my career front. I don't understand why marriage should be an impediment to a successful career."

Mahi celebrates her Roka

Neha Bamb who plays the character of Mahi in Maayka …Saath Zindagi Bhar Ka is getting married to her college friend, Rishi Zaveri. Last week the couple had a traditional roka to symbolize their union.

"Last week my roka took place at my place. They gave me gifts which we call as shagun. As a part of the shagun, they gave me two sarees - one is baby pink and the other peacock blue in colour as well as a necklace and other jewellery. They also gave me some cosmetics in shagun thali," says the actress.

Neha told us that she met Rishi during her college days at Poddar in Mumbai. "Rishi has completed his Bachelor in Management Studies from London as well as a Jewellery Assortment course. Now he is working in a jewellery company. But I don't want to reveal too many things about him," says Neha.

She adds that although their marriage is fixed her groom hasn't yet proposed to her. She explains, "We fell in love when I was in the first year at college and he was in the last year. But neither of us proposed to each other. Even now after fixing our marriage I'm hoping that he will do it. I guess he is hunting for the right ring and maybe then he will propose. The marriage and engagement will be in December. The date of the marriage will be after the 10 December while the engagement will be few days before that."

Neha debuted in television with Balaji's show Kaisa Yeh Pyar Hai as Kripa. Although she gained popularity in it, the show went off air last year and after six months she is now back on television in Maayka.

Although his characters give an emotional touch to the tele-serials but he has some strong advises for film or serial directors and producers. A veteran actor, Sudhir Pandey, says keeping in mind the impact a film or serial leaves on the audience, these art forms should be handled more responsibly. Visiting the holy city in connection with the launch of his new tele-serial 'Maayka' on Zee TV, the actor says during the past three decades the television has transformed in a big way as daily soaps on TV have become an unavoidable part of every family. It has been my endeavor to work in those films or serials which are able to give some positive message to the common masses and teach moral values to the young generation. Sudhir said that most of the TV serials produced these days do not touch the common man and one could visualize the fantasy in them as scenes depicting the high class society have been portrayed superfluously. He said though they created interest among the viewers but it was in bad taste as the theme and living style of the characters goes beyond logic. Sudhir who is playing the role of Brij Malhotra in the tele-serial along with Nandita Puri playing Moni Malhotra, as his wife, said that we hope that we would be able to touch the chord with the audience as witnessed during the presentation of serials like Betiyann, Dulhann, Kasamh Se. He said the theme it shows us the bittersweet ties that bind a woman to her place of firth, the family she had been brought up with. He said Maayka is a place that has its arms, heart and door always open for a woman and the theme is laid in such a way that it brings us closer to the viewers. In the serial we are talking about the strong emotional bond that every daughter shares with her maternal home after her marriage, he added. Giving details of the serial Sudhir said that setting in Maayka is that of Punjabi family who is well settled and he is playing the role of a typical Punjabi businessman. He is principled, traditional, loving and happy-go-lucky father. He is an honest man who believes in simple thinking and simple living. He loves his wife, three daughters and a son immensely and wants to provide the daughters with nice in-laws. But more importantly, he wants his daughters to have sweet memories from their Maayka after they get married. The serial tries to maintain the balance between the two families bonded by the marriage of the elder daughter Raaji. Nandita, who is playing the role of Moni Malhotra was never fortunate enough to have had a Maayka and was sure that she would not let her three daughters feel the absence of one. Moni initially belongs to Kashmiri family and is a complete homemaker and very particular about her house. The other lead artistes in the serial are Urmila Kanitakar, Arti Singh and Neha Bamb who are playing the role of three daughters as Raaji, Soni and Maahi, respectively.

Rajji, the eldest one, is very simple, docile and above all understanding girl, to the extent that the family teases her as hamari pyari gay mata. Soni is the confused soul who can never make up her mind about anything nor take any decisions on her own. Maahi, the youngest one, is most romantic of the lot. She is a chatterbox and is a very loving soul.

Content on TV needs to be filtered
HT Correspondent
Indore, April 5,2 007

"THE TIME has come for television producers and directors to filter the material being served to viewers. Censorship in any form harms creativity but there has to be some parameter to decide as to what content must be broadcast and what not".

Veteran actor Sudhir Pandey (Buniyad and Amanat fame) said this in a press conference while in the City on Thursday to promote his serial 'Maayka' being telecast on Zee TV.

Pandey is of the opinion that people running this nation have made it a practice to highlight the glamour and progress of metros and serial makers follow the same ritual. According to Pandey this is the reason that mostly Mumbai and Delhi culture is portrayed in the soaps. "In any case the director needs to show a rich person in order to depict a common man's conflict. The contrast has to be there but in right proportion", said Pandey who tasted fame after his role in 'Buniyad'.

Pandey agreed that serials do have dramatic twists and called it a matter of cinematic liberty. After essaying diverse roles in serials and films, Pandey now wants to play a character where he would have to transform himself psychologically. This former student of Pune Film Institute loves experimentation but admitted that to show absolute reality on television is a challenging task.

Nandita Puri who accompanied Pandey and is a lead star of Maayka said that television epitomizes womanhood as it shows that typically emotional stuff which satisfies the Indian women.

About increase in glamour quotient in television serials, Puri said that every actor has a different temperament. She opined that there are actresses who would prefer to play 'Ma' or 'Bhabhi' rather than donning western clothes but the new girls are bolder and confident and the kind of roles they play depends entirely on their ambitious nature.

Puri goes by the saying 'Each to his own' and devotes lot of time to her dance institute where she teaches Kathak. She has performed at all major dance festivals in the country and has also done shows abroad.

She underlined that the atmosphere in television industry is good and it is easier to get work here as compared to films. "After all the television directors allow artists to put up their suggestions and do not consider them as mere puppets", summed up Nandita.

CHATTER BOX

By IE
Saturday March 31, 10:24 PM

Cool move AFTER stints with serials like Reth, Pyar Ke Kasthi Mein and yet-to- be- launched Akhiyon Ke Jharokhe Se, Sachin Verma is now paired opposite Shweta Kawaatra in Kumkum-Ek Pyaara Sa Bandhan as Rakesh, a shrewd lawyer who's devoted to his family, especially his father-in-law. "I liked the flamboyance of the role. Plus Rakesh's track is there to stay in the story," says Verma. The actor was offered the role when the producers, BAG Films, had to postpone the release of Akhiyon. "It was due in November but Kaun Banega Crorepati came on, and now it's the World Cup. So I had the time, the opportunity and the ease of familiarity with the production house with whom I have worked twice before," he adds. Verma, who was a familiar sight in TV ads, has now firmly stepped ahead with acting. "Of course, I am hoping films come my way next," Verma smiles. For a handsome man like him, let's hope they do. New ground WITH Virrudh, Smriti Z Irani marks her first effort in breaking away from mentor Ekta Kapoor's camp on Star. The daily, that starts on March 26 on Sony, has Irani playing the protagonist caught in a conflict of relationships and values. Set in the corporate world, it has Vasudha Rai Singhania as a loving but smart girl who is second in command to her father, Dhirendra Rai Singhania (Vikram Gokhale), a power-hungry, manipulative business tycoon who has made his riches from running a newspaper. Vasudha is in love with Sushant (Sushant Singh), the chief crime reporter of the paper. Along the way, she discovers her father's manipulative ways and is caught between love and duty-how she handles the dilemma forms the crux of the story. The cast includes Mohan Bhandari, Govind Namdeo, Achint Kaur, Ashwini Kalsekar and Chetan Hansraj. It remains to be seen what Balaji Telefilms' now does not only to counter the falling viewership of its productions but also the gradual exodus of its prime people.Eye sore IT was a strange situation of sorts on the sets of Zee's Maayka-most of the cast suffered eye infections. Urmila Kanitkar, who plays the role of the elder daughter Raji, was the first to contract conjunctivitis which she passed on to her reel father -in-law Khurana, aka Pankaj Berry. Berry, however blames it on the medicines he's been taking for some ailment. The next person to be afflicted was his reel wife Durga, Neelima. It took some ingenuity from serial director Romesh Kalra to work with the condition. "For all of Urmila's shots we only used her profiles. With Pankaj, we incorporated the eye infection as part of story so he actually shot scenes where he would take eye drops and use dark glasses. Luckily Neelima's problem was caused because of the make-up she was using, so we sorted that out."
