Chapter 26: Sazaa

"Barkha .... I need you to come over to Doshi Hotels...as soon as you can " Barkha caught the exigent note in her aunt's voice as she took the call at a very early 7:00 am. "I'll be right there massi..."

The modest edifice of the Doshi Hotels was a study in contrast to the imposing one of Virani Group of Hotels. "I want people to stay here because they feel like home........It should be affordable...Not luxurious." had been Sagar Doshi's constant refrain. As Barkha entered the building, she saw some renovations and some constructions were underway. Surprised, she went up to the manager and asked him, "Mr. Puri....what's going on here?" "Barkha beta.......This part of the Hotel will be converted into ..." into what?" " A full fledged bar and a casino, Barkha" Ganga's voice sounded furious from the doorway. "Massi...What.....How?" "Apparently Mr. Dale of the Harrah's Entertainment Group has entered into an agreement with our Hotel." "That's not possible, there was no board meeting to discuss the same, I was not intimated, I did not sign any papers to the same effect...I haven't even heard of anything such..." Barkha's voice held a measure of panic now. "Neither was I informed Barkha......" "But Barkha beta..." Mr. Puri cut in, "When the men from Mr. Dale's firm arrived, they had all the legal papers in place...In fact our lawyer cross checked everything..........Because of that, no notice was sent to you...." "We must go to the police Barkha...Its obvious that there's been a scam or some sort of forgery. Lets go right now....." Barkha held up a staying hand to halt Ganga. "No massi.......If what Mr. Puri tells us is correct, there is only one person who could have authorized this deal. I would want to confirm the same first, before we take any action that may put us on the backseat later. "

"Nakul....Did you enter into a partnership with Mr. Dale of the Harrah's Group on behalf of Doshi Hotels? " "Yes..." Nakul answered, without looking up from the electronic survey report he was compiling for his uncle. "How could you even think of something like this Nakul? " "I wasn't the originator of the idea, Barkha....But I was a catalyst yes..." Nakul used the same words Barkha had used two weeks ago. "When my father built that Hotel Nakul, he wanted it to be like a home.......Not some ostentatious in-between-transistion place....He wanted to keep it simple, elegant and so that a person could come there with his family and feel good about it....What do you plan to achieve by having a casino there? " "Make it more lucrative than it is." "Really...is that all you really wanted? No Nakul that I refuse to believe. You did it to hurt me didn't you. By defiling the place I love more than anything else...This is to be my punishment then, is it not? " she said bitterly. " Punishment for what Barkha? You believe you had my family's best interests at heart when you urged the alliance between KT and Manthan, with utter disregard for my brother's feelings of course. I believe I was thinking about the shareholder's best interests when I signed this deal. I am the authorized signatory of course." he replied sounding intentionally patronizing.

Barkha did not want to argue with him any more. She walked to the door, and was about to pry it open when she heard Nakul say, " Let's reach a compromise Barkha. You help me call off this KT - Manthan wedding. And I will rescind this agreement. Immediately. Barkha looked at him evenly for a while before answering "No....You forget Nakul....I can buy you out." "That is if I'm willing to sell right? Or go to your grandfather and beg him to change the will. Its not too late, is it? " he sneered. "Never." "Fine then....Watch how I run the place down...drag it into bankruptcy....I have the single largest share percentage, I am the authorized signatory..I can do all that and more ...It'll take a while but the hotel your father built with so much passion, hard work and sweat, latched his dreams onto, wanting to pass it on as a legacy for future generations...The solitary, tangible, untarnished reminder of your father, Barkha...its going to be in ruins...Just wait and watch........."

I'm not very familiar with legal connotations as such......So I beg pardon for any legal inconsistencies in the chapter

Chapter 27: Shastra

A battle may be fought between countries, states, cities, corporations, generations, ideologies or individuals. The motivation may vary - avarice, anger, jealousy, pride, lust. Or vengenance. Nakul's thoughts ran along those lines as the owners and shareholders and other involved parties of the Doshi Hotels and Inns convened for a board meeting. He had also correctly guessed that the main bone of contention would be the recent 'partnership' between Mr. Dale and the Doshi Group. As he looked around the conference room casually, each face displayed a different albeit easily discernable emotion. Few seemed skeptic, some assured. Some self satisfied, some grumbling. Some distinctly unhappy, some positively delighted. Exactly opposite to him, his 'ex' - mother's face seemed unusually disturbed. And his wife's had the habitual composed expression.

Ganga's obvious apprehension was not just because of the fact that she was very worried about Barkha. Knowing the kind of attachment she had to her father's hotel business, it broke Ganga to see what her son was putting her ward through. So much that she'd given him a sharp dressing down when she met him earlier in the day. "Its shockingly immature the way you are behaving ....All in the name for love of your brother....Tell me Nakul, is the aftermath of your revenge going to be worth it? Specially if the person you see suffering is the one you love equally ....if not more?" Ganga asked him sounding caustic. She had been suddenly reminded of the umpteenth times he had called her the day before Barkha's birthday to get a list of her favorite colors, flowers, flavor and all such, just to get her a 'suitable' birthday gift. Nakul had heard her out in absolute silence and then answered with an equally cutting, "I guess you should know it better 'Mom'. That's what you are doing too, aren't you?"

"Ladies and gentlemen....First of all I would like to thank you all for understanding the urgent need of this meeting....Let me come straight to the point....The main purpose of this meeting is to discuss how beneficial the deal with the "Harrah's entertainment" is actually going to be. Though I am aware that we do have a couple of representatives from Mr.Dale's group, I cannot help but say that to the best of my knowledge, this is definitely going to affect the "for the family" image which we have." "But most people who patronize Doshi Inns are travelling businessmen." Nakul smoothly cut Ganga's opening gambit. With this, we also give them an alternative form of entertainment. This is just an addendum to the place, it does not encroach on any 'family activity' which we provide" he countered emphatically. The arguments went on for a while, mainly between Ganga and Nakul with some other members occassionally chipping in with statistics and other suggestions. However the general consensus still seemed to be in Nakul's favor. "Its clearly going through if we put it to vote Barkha" Ganga whispered in a resigned voice. Barkha nodded.

"We all here are thoroughly convinced that in signing this deal, Mr. Virani had the best interests of both the parties in mind. And therefore, we unanimously....." "Just a minute Sir." Barkha spoke for the first time in the whole hour and half of the meeting's duration. "I agree that this partnership is extremely profitable to us. However Mrs.Dasgupta, " Barkha said turning to the representative vice president of Harrah's Entertainment, "Being an ethical businesswoman, I am not sure I can say the same for your part of the deal. Just days before this agreement was drawn up and signed, your direct competitors MGM, entered into a deal with Virani Group of Hotels, a deal which I think was almost on similar terms and conditions ... but with a lot less money on MGM's behalf. Mr. Virani should be able to enlighten us a little more about it. After all, he was the chairperson of that deal too....Right Mr.Virani?"

"Nice move Barkha...." Nakul said as he drove them back to Shantiniketan. "So I relinquish either my control on Doshi Group and agree to the buy out or I give up my dream project for which I worked so hard in New York." "If you had read the Hotel Owner's Rulebook Nakul, you would have realized that you cannot hold two conflicting chairs at the same time. You would have to resign from either sooner or later."
Before she stepped out of the car at the Shantiniketan garage, Barkha turned back to Nakul to ask him, "Are hate, revenge, anger or envy the only emotion you actions can ever be driven by Nakul? Do you find my indiscretion so great a crime, you are willing to jeopardize our whole future for it? ...One more thing Nakul....If it were not a matter of principle, I would have willingly signed away my shares to you ...Give you carte blanche to deal with my father's property.....Because whatever you say or do, I know how much you suffer before causing me any grief. Just as it kills me to hurt you."

that is basically confessing she loves him, as Nakul loves her it hurts him to hurt her, just as it would hurt her to hurt him because she loves him
