Based on Barkha's mannerisms and character so far, who do you think I've modelled it after? 😃

Chapter 22: Yaadein

Barkha knew she would miss Nakul during his month long stay in New York. But she had grossly underestimated the extent. The mornings seemed unusually silent with the absence of his wake up hummings and incessant cribbing about his watch or tie or shoes or belt and other such everyday items he never found outright. His retort to Barkha's exasperated "Theek se dekho na.Everything should be in its proper place only." was an aggrieved "Proper according to you or me?". She missed his enquiring, trying-to-be-incurious-about-it-but-essentially-everyday question, "So Barkha, what's for lunch today?" as he drove them to Virani Hotels in the morning. She missed his innovative excuses of staying back on the days she had an evening shift so that they could go home together. When she opened the closet and saw the blue and pink salwar, she remembered how the buttons at the back had broken off suddenly during a house gathering and Nakul had subtly put his arm around her and lead her away so that she could change into something else, saving her from potential embarrassment.

Six days after Nakul's departure, the Virani's celebrated Holi with gusto. Amidst all the colors, syringes and water balloons, Barkha was reminded of the incident two days before Nakul had left. "Barkha....This grey shirt is soaked, can you please get me another one from the wardrobe?" "Which one should I get?" "Get anything....Its not that I have the fashion sense of Hrithik Roshan...And please hurry ...I'm already late for work." "When are you not?" was Barkha's refrain. As she handed Nakul a blue one through the bathroom door, she felt herself being pulled inside and completely drenched with water. "Nakul!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" "Happy Holi Barkha!!!" he said smugly, pouring another bucketful over her as she stood there dumbfounded. She had her revenge when she came down after 9:15 am, making sure he missed his breakfast. "Nakul, today for lunch we're having your 'favorite' - bitter gourd and your 'favorite' - eggplant", she told him even before he asked. He gave her an incredulous No-way-you-are-making-me-eat-that-stuff look. Her response was a composed You-bet-I-definitely-am look.

Sahil joined Barkha on the swing where she was sipping some weak tea, poring over some catalogs. "Busy beta?" Sahil asked her benevolently. "Oh...no Papa...I was just looking at some new designs for the interiors of the restaurant. Nakul said that maybe sometime in June, we'll go in for refurbishing and I just wanted to give him a heads up on the cost for the same." "So you've been promoted eh? Banquet Manager no more?" "No Papa...demoted...Nakul Virani's wife cum unpaid research assistant." Barkha answered, looking suitably resigned. "Barkha beta.....When are you going to go back to head Doshi Hotels and Inns?I guess the ownership would have been transferred to you already, right?" "Actually Papa...I don't have the ownership. Roughly, 5% of the control is with Massi, 10% with financers and shareholders, 35% with me and the rest with my husband. I got to know of this break up only three days ago, when the papers were 'officially' handed to me. " "That seems strange. I knew Sagar and he wouldn't bequeath just a part of his legacy to his only daughter." "He left his share to me absolutely, Papa. Its his father's share which is given to my husband." Barkha's voice sounded emotionless. "I seem to have upset you....Let's see if your friend can cheer you up." Sahil said as he saw Manthan walking towards them. "Hi chachu.... Barkha...can you help me? Our class is going on a field trip to Bangalore for a fortnight.........I have to leave at 5:45 a.m. tomorrow...." "Let me guess....you haven't started packing yet " Barkha said dryly, looking at her watch which showed 11:00 p.m. And then suddenly chuckled at the similarities between the cousins. Nakul too always left packing for the last moment. "I guess its a 'guy' thing", she told herself. As they walked back to the house, Barkha asked him absently, "So is it just your group which is going for the field trip,Manthan?" "No Barkha....The whole class is going......which includes...." "KT", Barkha finished, looking at KT dragging a stroller towards her room.

Chapter 23: Khel

The game of Truth and Dare is good fun for a lazy afternoon. Specially if your are not at the receiving end of the "Dare". That's what Soni, Rajji and Asma discovered at KT's expense. "So Soni....What shall be KT's dare?" Asma asked with a wicked gleam in her eyes. Soni, who KT had put in a tight spot by asking her sweetly, "Soni..Did you sneak out yesterday night to meet Rishabh Mohanty, Rajji's current boyfriend?" for her "Truth", was waiting for a chance for vengeance. "I'll defer till dinner KT...Don't worry....Its not going to be bad" Soni said in a saccharine voice.

"Chalo girls....Its close to midnight.....There is a seminar at IIM B at 9:00 a.m....Lets get going." KT told her colleagues. "Vaise bhi...I don't understand why the mess has to be 2 and a half miles from our sleeping quarters...And in the middle of a thicket jungle that too..." As the girls came out to get their bikes, KT swore..."Damn"..."What happened?" "Tires punctured...I guess we'll have to walk..." "Not we KT....You have to walk." Soni said, "Remember the 'Dare' was deferred. Well, all you have to do is to walk back to the hostel...All by yourself.". The trio biked away with KT's angry "I'm so going to take 'care' of you all when I reach there...." refrain being answered with a gleeful...."You'd do better to take 'care' of yourself in the first place....Bye Bye KT."

Dragging her heavy cycle made her progress even more slower and KT chanted "I'm not scared...I'm not scared..." to herself. The route was abandoned, the night was pitch dark and the shadows cast by tall imposing trees did nothing to allay any for her mounting-by-the-minute fears. Twice she stopped to listen to footsteps only to realize that they were a figment of her imagination. The third time, she heard definite, unearthy sounds. Terrified now, she threw her cycle to the ground and broke into a run. To dash into right into someone pretty solid.

KT almost screamed aloud. Instead, she hugged the person tight with a relieved "Manthan!!!". A minute later, she was back to her own bellicose self. "What are you doing here?" "Looking for you." "What???" "Hello....I'm the group incharge and the head count is my responsibility. I have to report back to Prof.Bhagat." Manthan said in a tone that implied that he found the duty utterly distasteful. "So unless you're wearing glass slippers, Cinderella, could you walk a bit faster?". "Let me please pick up the cycle I left behind.....I'll be fined otherwise." KT requested in a small tone. He obliged with a grudging "I'll walk with you....Have to get back asap."

They collected the poor, punctured bike and KT struggled with it to keep up pace with Manthan. He shook his head in apparent exasperation and with a curt, "KT ...I want to get back before the sun dawns ok?", caught hold of the bike handle. After walking together in absolute silence for some time, KT said softly, "Thanks Manthan." "Its okay...By the way....where are your friends? How come you didn't go back with them?"
"Well....we were playing a game and had a 'dare' bet and..." "You don't have anything better to do with your time than play all these juvenile games?" "Not everyone can not be bored doing nothing like you do all the time Manthan." KT shot back. Manthan glared at her.

"Its not that I do nothing." Manthan said sounding defensive. "I like intellectual pursuits...Not infantile ones." That shut KT up. A minute later, she asked him curiously, "You have had formal training in music?" "No...Why?" "The night before you sang at the 'Ice breaking' campfire.Kisi se mujhe pyar ho....kisika intezaar ho....It was ....I mean you have a decent voice." she said biting back the adjective she wanted to use. "Tell me something I don't know, KT." "Is that a challenge?" "Well...take it as such..." "And what decides who wins?" "Well...If I'm not able to say anything for ...twenty...no ...let me make it easier for you...fifteen seconds.....then you win KT.Done?" "Okay...But the rejoinders have to be correct sentence completions.....And it'll be ek sawal mera...ek jawab tumhara.." "Deal." Manthan answered.

Manthan started off with, "This seminar to be held tomorrow .." "is a royal waste of money and time." KT answered pat. "In the semester exams this year, Manthan Virani is going to..." "fail in Economics and Supply Chain Management coz I copied notes from Ms. Krishna Tulsi." "This year end, a new entertainment portal is going to be launched by.." "Karan uncle who wants to help his 'talented' son find his feet in the field he likes most." Taken aback for a second, Manthan retorted with "Bluffmaster!!!". "Ha...That's what you think...I intern at Virani Industries .....I know..." "Ok..ok...your turn next." "Lets see if you can fill this one in Manthan..",KT said, smiling impishly, "When we get back to Bombay, Manthan, I'm going to be ...." "engaged to Manthan Virani." KT's smile froze on her face and for several minutes she stared at Manthan. "There you are KT...Manthan...", she heard Prof.Bhagat's voice and turned to look at him. "We were getting worried about you guys..."

Before she joined the professor to be escorted back to the girls' sleeping room, KT turned back to Manthan and whispered, "That was a bad joke Manthan..." In the same hushed tones Manthan answered back with "I don't know about 'bad' but it certainly wasn't a joke, KT."
