CHAPTER 1
"SILENCE IS MY ANSWER TO EVERYTHING!"
His eyes were angry and dejected. The old, but young man, stood in front of the careless young guy who was busy sketching something very important on the stoned wall with a piece of pointed red brick, paying no heed to the person standing before him, for almost an hour now. The young man's eyes were completely concentrated towards his work. The man crossed his arms across his chest and stood in an utter silence as he received no answers for his questions. Also, a line of worry showed up on his forehead. The careless young guy looked up as he finished what he was doing and said in an as blithely manner as ever, "I am waiting for you to leave, but you, just won't!" That was the point of breakage for the old man's patience. He has almost been coming to him to get his questions answered for a month now, but he would just not get his answers, and today, when the young man finally spoke up, these are the words which he said, which surely came as a test for the old man's diminishing patience.
"You will have to talk to me! I won't bear this nonsense from you anymore." Barked out the old man who was momentarily at a lack of patience, but he did not seem to succumb to it.
"What do you want from me, Vikram sir?" He asked, after chuckling a bit.
"The truth, definitely!" Vikram blurted out.
"I told that already," He said. His words were deadpan. Vikram understood the obvious falseness in his words. "You can't do this to yourself, son! You'll destroy yours and her life like this," His voice showed the concern he had for his son-like figure sitting against a wall in front of him. His eyes dwelled up with tears. The young guy went silent again; something that Vikram said silenced him. He fell in a deep, inscrutable, trench of thoughts. His eyes showed the pain he had within. His silence felt unbearable for Vikram.
"How is she?" That's the only thing that came out of the young man's mouth, after a long phase of silence.
"She would never forgive you for what you did to her. You don't know what you've done to her," Said Vikram, as he wiped the only tear that escaped his eye.
"She shouldn't! She shouldn't..." He ended the conversation with that.
"But, Abeer!" Vikram intervened. But the young guy again chose to be silent. Vikram was really annoyed this time, and would have slapped him really hard if they weren't in the central jail, but he chose to be silent as well. "You can't stay calm like that; you'll have to speak the truth!" Vikram said. "I am just exercising my right to be silent, sir!" Abeer said in a sardonic manner. "Don't speak about your rights...don't speak about your rights...for god's sake!" Vikram said a bit loudly. The constable came up hearing the noises and thwacked up his baton across the barred door. "Your time's up!" The constable shouted in a sharp voice. "There comes my savior!" Abeer said in a victorious manner. Vikram was not so surprised by this, "Can I expect anything else from you?" Vikram asked. Abeer chuckled. "Omkar will come to meet you in the next meeting!" Vikram spoke up. "You brothers won't leave me, right?" Abeer asked, as if he really wanted to ask the question, but his face was covered in a sardonic expression. "Never," Vikram replied, as he turned his back to him and walked out, "What will you get by being a devil's advocate? Find someone needy, instead." Abeer said, but was late at it. He stood up and passed on a smile to the constable. He moved forward to see if Vikram really went away. He felt a feeling within him to reach out to Vikram before he leaves, he wanted to ask for his help, he wanted to tell the truth, but he stopped himself. He composed himself. He took a deep breath and slipped against the wall again, folding his legs up to his chest and embracing his arms across them, with his head rested on his legs.
"How is she?" He asked himself. And the obvious answer that came to him was silence. He couldn't help but let the tears escape his eyes. His was in pain, a deep pain.
