Chapter 2: Of Awkward Encounters. For the fifth time, Karan saw Preeta rubbing her eyes and opening and closing her mouth like a goldfish. Irritated, because he was standing at the door for so long, he welcomed himself and jumped on the couch.
It was then that something ticked Preeta off.
"Take your shoes off Karan!" Preeta scolded him with narrowed eyes.
"And then you wonder why I call you Miss Mental." Karan stood up and walked towards her. "Instead of welcoming me, you are shouting at me. I mean, a little courtesy."
Preeta looked at him sheepishly. "I am so sorry. It's just that I am quite confused and currently my brain is trying to process everything. And.."
"Sshh.." Karan placed a finger on her lips. "Baby doll, chill. I am here for 2 months! You have all the time to talk to me. And if things do work out, we'll have a lifetime." He winked.
Preeta's eyes widened. "What do you mean two months?"
"Don't tell me I'll have to explain this to you!"
"You'll have to Karan because I am going crazy and... Wait. Can you stop calling my 'Baby doll'?"
Karan smiled cheekily. "How adorable are you? You are still stuck on Baby doll?"
Preeta was thinking of some smart reply when something struck her. "You called me adorable!"
Karan bit his lip and then smirked. "I knew you would love to have a compliment from me."
"Still haven't given up on that theory, have we?" Shaking her head, Preeta walked towards the kitchen. She'll need another cup of tea as she takes in all the information that Shrishti should have given her. It's your fault as well, her brain justified but she was in no mood right now. To her surprise, just as she was about to take another step, Karam gripped her arm and pulled her into him. She bumped into his chest and looked up at him, her heart beating faster than what's healthy.
"I still believe that you love me, Preeta." She shuddered as she heard her name from him.
The memory of the last time he had addressed her by her name was suddenly fresh as if it happened only a day ago.
-
Preeta had never been upset that her patient got well so soon. That is sadistic! Yet, right now, she wished someone from the Luthra family just broke a bone or twisted their limbs. Preeta didn't want her job to be over here, yet. She then chided herself. Get a grip on yourself Preeta. You don't stand a chance with Karan anyways so spending time with him should be the last thing you think about.
She hugged Dadi and Rakhi Aunty and smiled at everyone. Karan was very much present yet he was busy in his phone, looking tensed. Even though Preeta wanted to ask and help him if she could, she reprimanded herself. He is annoyed by you. Just get going Preeta!
When she was finally out of the Luthra house, she convinced herself that it was only a crush. It would wear off with time. After all, apart from Dadi, Karan was the person she spent most of her time in Luthra Mansion with. Yes, they would fight, bicker, quarrel and argue yet they were together all the time. So spending time with him had made her get used to his presence. Taking a deep breath and putting up a strong smile, she walked a few steps.
"Miss Mental!" She ever so slightly jumped and then groaned. Just when she was convincing herself that they wouldn't have contact anymore and things would work out, he HAD to call out to her.
Turning around with a pout, she grumpily asked "What is it?" To her surprise, Karan wrapped his arms around her. Preeta was only aware of the warmth spreading throughout her body and her racing heartbeat.
"You hugged everyone, do I not deserve one as well? I kept you entertained all the time."
Preeta chuckled. "Sure Karan. We deserve a hug as well."
When they pulled away, Karan nervously ran a hand through his hair. Preeta looked awkward. What was she now supposed to say?
"Uh, goodbye, Karan." She softly said.
Surprising her for the second time that night, Karan leaned in a placed a soft kiss on her cheek. "I'll miss you Preeta. Goodbye." He said this so softly, Preeta wouldn't have heard it if she hadn't stopped breathing because of what he did a few seconds ago.
She looked on as he gave her one last grin and ran into the house. Preeta was left wondering whether what happened was real or a figment of her imagination.
-
Preeta had decided that she would never dwell on what happened that night. It would only make her hope for more even when there was not a single chance between them. It was one of those moments that existed yet it didn't, that happened yet it didn't and that would always be there yet it won't.
Karan stared at Preeta and watched different emotions play on her face. When he finally couldn't understand why the beautiful smile was turning into a frown he snapped his fingers in front of her.
Preeta suddenly became aware of their proximity.
"Kahan kho gayi?"
"Kuch nahi."
"By the way, Mumbai main aake tumhe Mumbai ki hawah lag gayi?"
"Kya?"
As Karan's eyes raked over her body, Preeta realised that she was in her night shorts. Her eyes widened and she quickly struggled out of his hold, running into her room, leaving a grinning Karan Luthra behind.
