Hussain Kuwajerwala all set for first-ever Bollywood musical

Sun, Jun 6 05:41 PM

Colombo, June 6 (IANS) Popular TV actor Hussain Kuwajerwala, who will soon be seen in the first-ever Bollywood musical, feels the task is quite challenging as he is required to sing, dance, fight, do acrobatics -- all in just two hours without any re-take.

'This musical involves a lot of hard work and there is no scope for mistake,' Hussain told IANS in an interview.

'You can say that it is India's answer to the Opera and Moulin Rouge. It is the first of its kind where you will have a small Bollywood musical in which everyone will give live performance,' he said.

The musical 'Zangoora' will also have actresses like Isha Sharvani and Gauhar Khan at the 'Kingdom of Dreams' - India's first entertainment and leisure destination at Gurgaon which will be launched in the end of July.

'The Kingdom of Dreams' is owned by the Great Indian Nautanki Company, a joint venture between Wizcraft International Entertainment and Apra Group of Companies.

The official announcement about 'Zangoora' was made here on the last day of the ongoing International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards Saturday.

Talking about his role in the musical, Hussain says that it is a very demanding job and all actors who are part of this musical are working on improving their stamina.

Before Hussain, actor Vivek Oberoi was signed as the lead actor for the musical extravaganza. Vivek opted out of the project and Hussain stepped into his shoes.

'Well, when I got a call from the organisers, I didn't know about the project, nor did I know about Vivek. So, I don't know why they signed me for the role, but all I can assure you that it is one of a lifetime opportunity,' said Hussain.

The actor said that it would be a cliche if he said he is not aiming for the tinsel town.

'Every actor wants to be in Bollywood and like all of them, it is my dream to be a part of Bollywood. But it would be a cliche to say that I want to do something different and am waiting for that dream role,' Hussain said.

'I feel what is important is to be consistent with your work and you will definitely be noticed,' he added.

The actor's popularity soared an all-time high when he won the second season of dance reality show 'Nach Baliye' with his wife Tina. Ever since that, he has hosted reality shows like 'Kisme Kitna Hai Dum', 'Khullja Sim Sim 2', and is now hosting the third seasons of 'Indian Idol' as well.

IRS 2009 R2: Kingdom of Dreams earmarks Rs 15 cr for marketing; set to launch this summer
May 17, 10
Preeti Hoon

Kingdom of Dreams, a Great Indian Nautanki Company initiative, is all set to launch this summer. With Indian culture as its core theme and Bollywood connection being an integral part, this new-age, larger than life destination aims to be a treat to entertainment lovers.

In an exclusive conversation with exchange4media, Viraf Sarkari, Director, Wizraft, said, 'Kingdom of Dreams is a very unique, live entertainment and regional destination that every Indian will be proud of. It's a large experiment on the dream I had. There is a void in the expression that represents our country in terms of art and culture, and I always wondered why somebody is not doing something on it.'

The launch will take place in three phases. Phase one will see the commencement of Nautanki Mahal and Cultural Gully.

Sarkari elaborated, 'Nautanki Mahal is the world's first 4D theater and the play showcased here will be the world's first cinematic live musical. It is going to house the world's biggest Bollywood play, which has been written by Javed Akhtar, music is by Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy, dance direction is by Shiamak Davar, Omung Kumar is doing the entire production and art design, Alen Amin is doing the stunts, while Neeta Lulla will do the costumes. While Cultural Gully is a place that showcases India in one walk, it also has the best of handicrafts, local cuisines and hundreds of folk dancers performing live. People of India tend to find their culture boring, but we are going to change that with the inception of Kingdom of Dreams.'

With a seating capacity of 836, Nautanki Mahal is a high-tech theater boasting of a hydraulic stage, automated fly bars, state-of-the-art matrix sound system with complete surround system that will make the whole ambience realistic, in sync with the play. For example, if there's a jungle scene, the audience would be able to smell greens or a coffee shop scene, where they would smell the aroma of coffee.

Phase II will see the launch of the Showshaa Theater in September-October, which comprises a 450-seated amphitheater. 'Showshaa Theater will showcase the rich Indian values and its diverse culture. Epics like the Mahabharata and Ramayana will be presented with a modern touch so that people don't find it boring. We will have mock Indian weddings, wherein all the rituals will be performed by visitors themselves. It will be unique and memorable,' said Sarkari.

Phase III will see the opening two more theaters ' one of them will be a Performing Arts Centre that will provide a platform for budding talents, while the other one is still in the pipeline. This apart, plans are in place to rope in media partners as well.

The company plans to spend big on advertising. 'We have created a list of agencies, be it advertising, digital, etc., and the marketing budget would be Rs 15 crore per year,' Sarkari informed.

The Magnificent, Marketing & Masses

While the marketing plans are in place, work is still on at the location site. Cultural Gully is expected to sport a traditional yet contemporary look with minute detailing going into every corner of it. From Rajasthan to Punjab to Kerala, the structures and designs of every major Indian state is being adopted to give an authentic touch and feel, so that one can relate to the essence of that particular region.

IIFA Buzz, the premium Bollywood lounge for movie-buffs, is in its last stages of completion.

Speaking on the plans and strategy ahead, a confident Vikram Rao, Head of Marketing, Kingdom of Dreams, said, 'We are ready for the launch in the first week of July. The ground activation and the pre-launch campaign will begin 15 days prior to that. This will be the public launch, but before that there will a few launch evenings booked for celebrities, media, corporates, etc. The marketing will be segmented and we will start with the unveiling of the brand ' Kingdom of Dreams. It is very important for people to know what exactly this concept is. This will be supported by BTL activities by Wizcraft. The launch will include print medium across the metros and radio, which will play a very important role, and OOH, especially at airports. Eventually, mouth of word will spread. We will also advertise in Mumbai since that's where the Bollywood hub is.'

Meanwhile, the management is keeping its focus on extensive advertising through radio. On being asked what made radio a crucial medium, Rao replied, 'Radio in India today is a platform for segment driven marketing, and I can pick a particular time slot according to listnership, based on programmes, segments, and it will be good for us in terms of reach apart from being cost-efficient and interactive.'

On the post-launch activities, he said, 'We will follow up with a campaign that will be BTL and activation driven. Here, the print campaign will shift gears from the launch campaign to content around the plays at Nautanki Mahal, IIFA Buzz and other sections. So, every ad or radio jingle will be content driven under the mother campaign. We will be actively involved in digital marketing. It is very important for us to drive traffic towards the booking engine on our website (www.kingdomofdreams.co.in), though we are collaborating with bookmyshow.com for the initial few months.'

'Zangoora', the musical will mark the beginning of Nautanki Mahal, the aesthetic theater. On weekdays there will be one show, while weekends will have two shows per day. Between 6 pm and 12 midnight, the entry charges are Rs 750 per head, but before 6 pm, the charges are Rs 500. Access is through specially designed smart cards and the entry charges are fully redeemable as this amount, after adding top-up money, can be used in Cultural Gully or to buy play tickets, and if at all there's a balance amount, it can be used within six months of the visit. An ample parking space for over 6,000 cars will allow hassle-free parking too.

Moreover, there will be online booking discounts, bundle bookings, weekend special pricing and more, however, as of now, it is too early for the management to comment on this bit.

Hussain Kuwajerwala Speaking about Zangoora…
"IIFA rocks and we're really glad to be here launching Zangoora!" says Hussain the star of the musical that's set to take the Kingdom of Dreams by storm.

"There is a lot of magic, a love triangle, plenty of great songs to entertain you along with drama and special effects to thrill you. Zangoora has all the elements of a great Hindi film". There's something for every age to love about Zangoora – I believe all age groups will enjoy this musical a lot. It's been a great experience to work with Isha and Gauahar who are both such talented dancers and actresses. Hussain hopes that this will be a stepping stone for films but is currently making the most out of this phenomenal experience he is living in right now. Theatre is making its mark in the Indian scene at a time when Music and Films are dominant players and favourites of the nation. With greater infrastructure theatre is slowly but steadily making its way to popularity and with the Kingdom of Dreams, there is without doubt that theatre will get a much needed boost.

On his career…
Hussain believes in hard work and hasn't really mapped out his career but made a firm decision about acting and the kind of roles he would like to take on. Hussain seeks out to learn something new every day and seeks out roles that will keep him challenged and driven to go to work every day. This is the first time Hussain is doing theatre and it has pushed him beyond his boundaries to try something new, learn new things and gain completely new experiences. Hussain uses different experiences and challenges to grow as an actor and individual. The legend Amitabh Bachchan is his role model from childhood and to achieve an iota of what he has done in his life, would be something phenomenal.

'Zangoora' is Bollywood's Answer to 'Moulin Rouge'

Contributing Writer

By: Simran Mody, India Correspondent

Just like many mainstream Indian television stars, acclaimed small-screen actor Hussain Kuwajerwala is plotting the day his career path takes him through Bollywood. Well, Hussain's number has just been called, and the ink on his ticket to Mumbai is just now drying, but the Kumkum star and Indian Idol host will not grace the screens of any Hindi-themed multiplexes in the near future. After all, the 32-year-old actor is foraying into Bollywood via the path never traveled — stage musical. At the peak of the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards in Sri Lanka, it was announced that Hussain (whose stardom shot through the roof after he won first place in the dance reality show Nach Baliye) would play the lead role opposite Isha Sharvani and Gauhar Khan in the first-ever Bollywood stage musical, Zangoora. It is expected the two-hour musical production will be featured at the Kingdom of Dreams, the revolutionary Universal Studios-like theme park in Gurgaon dedicated to Indian entertainment and culture.

An award-winning actor who made quite the name for himself in the popular television serial Kumkum, Hussain told the press he is up to the challenge of starring in Bollywood's first-ever musical, which is slated to start in July and feature two hours of non-stop singing and dancing.

"This musical involves a lot of hard work, and there is no scope for mistake," the actor candidly said, addressing questions of how he would handle starring in a production where there are no re-takes or cuts during the live performance. "You can say that it is India's answer to the Opera and Moulin Rouge. It is the first of its kind, where you will have a small Bollywood musical in which everyone will give live a performance."

Hussain's role as lead actor was by no small feat, however, as he was offered the part only after leading Hindi film star Vivek Oberoi backed out of the project after initially accepting the offer to star in Zangoora. After Vivek backed out, Hussain was quickly invited to come aboard, and the television star accepted.

"When I got a call from the organizers, I didn't know about the project, nor did I know about Vivek," he announced to the press. "I don't know why they signed me for the role, but all I can assure you is that it is a once in a lifetime opportunity."

It is a lifetime opportunity many may look back upon, especially if Zangoora establishes itself as a breakthrough stage production that opened the door to other similar projects, ergo providing yet another avenue for aspiring Bollywood stars to make a name for themselves.

Accordingly, Hussain not only grasps the significance of the venture he is about to embark upon but is also just thankful that he has a chance to be involved with Bollywood in a substantive capacity.

"Every actor wants to be in Bollywood, and like all of them, it is my dream to be a part of Bollywood," he told the press. "But it would be a clich to say that I want to do something different and am waiting for that dream role. I feel what is important is to be consistent with your work and you will definitely be noticed."

Debuting in the first-ever Bollywood musical featured at one of the grandest industry-based theme park projects in the Great Indian Nautanki Company's Kingdom of Dreams, Hussain should have no problem being noticed. The only question remains whether he will be noticed enough to be considered a pioneer and a revolutionary actor.

If all goes as planned, Hussain will have his answer come July.
