Hrithik Roshan recently opened up about two major films he turned down early in his career — Dil Chahta Hai and 3 Idiots, both of which eventually went to Aamir Khan and became cultural touchstones in Indian cinema. The actor, who’s known for roles in films like Guzaarish, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, and Super 30, shared his thoughts while promoting War 2 in Sri Lanka.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Hrithik said, “I said no to Dil Chahta Hai, and I said no to 3 Idiots. But I think Aamir was the right choice for both those films. It had a destiny.” He added that he holds no bitterness and genuinely admires what Aamir brought to the table. “Aamir was awesome and carried those films; they belonged to him,” Hrithik said.
In Dil Chahta Hai, Aamir Khan played Akash Malhotra, a character that was equal parts witty and emotionally distant. Akash’s journey from dismissing love to eventually confronting his own fears of intimacy made the role memorable. His dynamic with Preity Zinta’s character, Shalini, remains one of the highlights of the film.
Years later, Aamir delivered another standout performance as Rancho in 3 Idiots. A free-spirited, fiercely intelligent student, Rancho questions the rigidity of India’s education system. He challenges blind obedience, champions curiosity, and encourages his friends to follow their true calling. The role sparked nationwide debates about the pressure of academic excellence and societal expectations.
Both characters are now considered iconic, not just because of how well Aamir played them, but because of how deeply they resonated with audiences. Dil Chahta Hai has gained cult status over the years, and 3 Idiots became a blockbuster, praised for both its storytelling and its sharp social commentary.
While Hrithik doesn’t dwell on the missed opportunities, he acknowledged that some roles are simply meant for others. “It’s destiny,” he said.
Currently, Hrithik is prepping for War 2, where he’ll be seen opposite Jr NTR and Kiara Advani. Directed by Ayan Mukerji, the film is part of YRF’s spy universe and is expected to be one of the biggest releases of 2025.
