Chapter Nine
The lights were dimmed, he perched himself on a high stool with guitar in his hands. The spot light was now on him as they had planned but his eyes were looking for the one whom he had been waiting for since his concert began. The wrap up song was to be played and how he wished he could spot his wife, just before the song, to tell her it was for her and the little one he was praying to be a girl.
I know a girl
She puts the color inside of my world
But, she's just like a maze
Where all of the walls all continually change
"I think it's a girl." He had said yesterday when she was busy doing her research. She kept aside her spectacles and eyed him over the flap of her laptop where he lay on the opposite side with his tablet.
"Why would you think that?" She had asked.
"Because I want a girl." He had replied without so much as glancing at her.
And I've done all I can
To stand on her steps with my heart in my hand
Now I'm starting to see
Maybe It's got nothing to do with me
A smile graced his lips, thinking of the bemused expression on Pragya, she was not expecting him to want a child and that too a girl but he knew only how he had diligently prayed for it to be a girl. His eyes glistened as he thought of his own daughter for whom he had chosen this last song specifically. His girl.
Fathers, be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers be good to your daughters too
He grew worried when her face did not come in sight. He remembered she had texted him confirming her departure from their hotel, then why could he not find her now amidst the crowd? He played the last bit and rushed backstage to call her hoping and praying she was doing fine.
"There you are!" He beamed as soon as he saw her standing, looking into space. He reached her side and shook her slightly. "Are you all right?" When she still did not reply he made her face him. "Is the baby troubling you?"
"You... You are troubling me." She whispered with fresh tears brimming in her eyes.
"What's the matter baby?"
"Do not!" She lifted her hand, stopping him. "Do not call me that! Or anything for that matter!"
"What is wrong with you?" He asked still holding her shoulders.
She jerked her hands away and took step back. "When were you planning to tell me about your spy?"
"What sp-?" He fell short of words as realization dawned on him. He had been looking for the right time, the right words to disclose the truth but he was apprehensive of her reaction. And now, it had to come out in the worst of ways! "I was.. I."
"When?" She crossed her arms, looking at him with hurt and anger lurking in her eyes.
"Look, its not how you think it is. I just did what I thought was appropriate."
"You think it was appropriate to keep an eye on me?"
"Only to keep you safe." He raked his fingers through his hair. "How else do you think I knew you were pregnant? You were sso weak and indisposed. You.. You kept on throwing up."
"You don't trust me, do you? Whether it was a misunderstanding played by your sister or .. Or this. You just don't. Trust. Me."
"I care for you. I love you damn it!"
"No. You don't. You only know how to hurt me." She walked close to him, their face inches apart. "You really think I'd keep the child away from you. You still think so low of me." She turned around and walked away.
"Pragya." How could he make her believe you of his emotions, of his sincere intentions. When she stopped walking, he held on to the ray of hope. May be she will forgive him and trust her feeling, her love for him.
"Don't make me regret having a baby with you." She said with her back to him. In that moment, he fell. He fell deep. In her eyes, in his conscience. He saw his world falling apart with her retreating back. Why was it that every time he thought he had it all figured out, he perished? He just stood there, seeing the love of his life walking away for the second time and he wondered if he will ever get another chance to have her back this time. Until his vision blurred he realized, it was his own tears that had escaped from the sanctuary of his eyes.
