Abhi would have been Pragya's step brother's sala. Pragya's brother would be the first wife's son and he gets all the property. The step brother's wife would hate Pragya. This is literally the book's plot line and I'm adding nothing to it.

The difference would be that Edward likes his jeejajee's family. To make it a love hate they could have Abhi side with his sister. Make him think that the step sisters are after his jeejajees money like his sister does (which she does in the book). Then all the nok jhok scenes would still be there. Abhi could still hate Pragya and the plot would be less strange. After like a year when they finally fall in love after he realises the girls are not bad as his sister thinks they are they could add tanu making an appearance as long forgotten fiance.

I have no idea why they deviated from the novel because it has the self reliant widow mother, annoying dil, joru ka ghulam step brother, misunderstandings etc. It would have been ideal as a desi masala soap.

Since I haven't read any of Jane Austen's books, I was somewhat curious about the similarities. Ayuzawa, thanks for explaining this in such great detail. Reading your post, it seems right - they started by thinking they'd base it on this story, and somewhere along the way, took off on a tangent

Jane Austen was a feminist. She was a feminist in a time when being one would have gotten her in serious trouble. She understood that it was important to spread positive ideas about gender equality by writing her female characters with as much depth and care, if not more, as her male characters.

Ekta is an opportunist. She understands what her audience wants and caters to that alone for profit, shying away from any duty or obligation to promote positive, progressive values.

The only commonality between both of their works is the fact that both stories depict two sisters. That's it.

Isn't that just the truth, shrewd business woman that she is!

Nonetheless, in her defense, she does have a show currently on LifeOk that puts forth a rather sensible message. Considering that the soap world is mainly a female domain, one would have thought, that show would have a lot of takers, but no wait.. this one has wayyy better chemistry. It's sense vs eye-locks what a choice! Besides Abhi is just sooo adorable because he is sooo dumb!

Ekta always gets blamed for dishing out drivel, but if the audience not only laps up the drivel but even asks for seconds, why blame her for laughing all the way to the bank.

PS. The two sisters! That's what is common b/w the two works. And here I was trying hard to see Abhi in the light of the pleasant Edward rather than the Khap panchayat that he has come to personify.

I wouldn't have minded if the story was changed into something better. The show had promising characters despite the differences and inconsistencies between the original and adapted characters, which I was fine with. But now it has been nothing but disappointment. I don't know where they are even going with the storyline anymore ( and it's unpredictable in a horrible manner ATM)! Will be eagerly waiting to read your next post.

thank you.
yes it is true it had a lot of promise especially the acting skills should have been used properly.

your welcome.
yeah seems like they lost track or may be they didn't begin with the thought of going along the storyline.

true...it is the audiences fault also for taking the crap that they give us. we don't want sense. and the problem is when there is chemistry there is no sense. and so we hope and complain that may we get both in one package. chemistry cannot be created but a sensible plot can be so we go to a show with natural chemistry and ask for more i guess...

lol...tre that...it had desi masala if presented in desi style but then desi-fying it would have still caused complaints so may be they ekta-fyied it.

A brilliant post. EK tried to sell this to the public as if this was inspired by Sense and Sensibility - NOTHING comes close today - it's a typical family drama and NONE of the characters bear any resemblance. You are spot on. Viewers of the show so blindly by Pragya-Abhi and Purab-Bulbul romance have lost all sight of objectivity and will not appreciate what a brilliant analysis has been doe of the show. 👏

EK probably never even read Sense and Sensibility.
