Sunjay Kapur Death: British coroner's office confirms natural death after mother Rani Kapur alleges conspiracy

Billionaire Indian industrialist Sunjay Kapur died on June 12, 2025 at a polo match in London. It happened on the same day as the ill-fated plane crash in Ahmedabad. A month later, his mother Rani Surinder Kapur has claimed that she needs proper closure into what led to the death of her son. Sunjay Kapur, an avid polo player maintained a high level of fitness. After his death, there are reports of a tussle over his assets which include the Rs 30,000 crore Sona Comstar Group, and his personal wealth that is around Rs 10,300 crore. However, British authorities have confirmed that he died of “natural causes”. A letter notifying the family was also sent to Priya Sachdev Kapur. She is now living in London with her son, Azarias and daughter Safira.

Mark Overly was appointed as the chairman of Sona Comstar while Sunjay Kapur stayed the chairman emeritus of the firm. Vivek Vikram Singh is the CEO of the company. As per the Surrey Coroner’s office, the actual reason for his death has been identified as left ventricular hypertrophy and ischaemic heart disease. LVH happens when the muscular wall of the heart’s left ventricle becomes thick. This happens mainly due to high blood pressure. It seems the arteries had become narrow. The common reason is atherosclerosis caused due to fatty deposits.

Rani Surinder Kapur has filed an official criminal complaint seeking a thorough probe into the circumstances surrounding the demise of Sunjay Kapur. She said that she is old and needs closure so that her heart and mind can rest in peace. Karisma Kapoor and her son Kiaan Raj Kapoor were recently seen in New Delhi. Rani reminisced how Sona Comstar was built with love, sacrifice and resilience of the Kapur family, and it looked like someone wanted to usurp the legacy of the family.
