Quick story:
Pragya is a girl from a middle class family. She is serious and responsible and works as a college lecturer. At the beginning of the series, she is about to get into an arranged marriage. However, that falls through when the groom's side demands too much from the bride's side in terms of money/property. After that Pragya slowly becomes involved with her best friend and fellow college lecturer, Suresh. They are engaged and about to get married but then that alliance also breaks because it turns out Suresh is in love with Pragya's younger sister Bulbul.

Bulbul is a cheerful, confident, carefree girl. She has recently graduated from school and gets her first job with a businessman named Purab. Purab is just starting his own business but he has gained some wealth by working as a manager for his best friend from childhood, Rockstar Abhi. Slowly, Purab and Bulbul fall in love, even though at first Bulbul doesn't like Purab because she thinks he goes around with lots of girls. The truth is that Purab deals with all the girls who want to chase after Abhi. Anyway, despite their mixed feelings about love and relationships, eventually Bulbul and Purab fall in love with each other.

However, Purab is unable to explain to Bulbul that he is informally engaged to Abhi's sister Aaliya. When Aaliya returns from a year of studying in Australia, many misunderstandings and complications occur. Bulbul finds out that there was someone already in Purab's life, but she doesn't know the details. She feels heartbroken and tells Purab he betrayed her. She no longer wants to be involved with him. Meanwhile Aaliya is furious that Purab has found someone else and tells him that she will destroy him. Aaliya mistakenly thinks that Purab is actually involved with Pragya because she saw them together. She doesn't know it's really Bulbul. She tells Abhi that Purab is involved with someone, and Abhi and Purab have a terrible fight where basically Abhi kicks Purab out of his life. Both of them are really hurt by this change in their friendship but as of yet they haven't tried to fix it.

Aaliya convinces her brother Abhi to marry Pragya so that Pragya can be removed from Purab's life. Aaliya and Abhi think Pragya is simply a gold digger so surely she will marry Abhi since he is much richer than Bulbul. Also Abhi's Daadi really wants him to get married, and in some unrelated occurrences, she has met Pragya and thinks she's perfect for him. Plus their kundalis are almost a perfect match. So Daadi brings the rishta to Pragya's family in a formal way. Between Aaliya and Daadi, Abhi finds himself agreeing to marry Pragya mostly out of revenge. He already has a girlfriend, Aaliya's friend the supermodel Taanu, but Taanu doesn't want to marry him immediately because she has just received a great modelling contract. Plus Aaliya convinces her that Abhi would only be married to Pragya for one year and it wouldn't be a real marriage. So even Taanu convinces Abhi to go along with Aaliya's plan and marry Pragya.

Pragya initially does not want to accept the rishta with Abhi because she believes they are too different from each other. She thinks he is a rich, spoiled rockstar that has nothing in common with her, an ordinary middle class girl. However, her mother Sarla is really tense about all her broken engagements and gets sick when Pragya tries to avoid the relationship with Abhi. So for the sake of her mother, Pragya accepts the rishta. Due to Aaliya's plans for revenge, and her need to get Pragya out of Purab's life (she doesn't know it's really Bulbul that Purab is in love with), the engagement and wedding all take place within a few days. Pragya accepts the marriage whole-heartedly, and promises herself that she will try to find the good in Abhi.

Now in the background, there were many times when Pragya-Abhi met before the rishta was arranged. Pragya protests Abhi's vapid rock-pop music, she says it's all meaningless love songs and he makes money by manipulating people's emotions. Also, Abhi's cousin-brother Akaash, who lives in Abhi's house, was involved in a relationship with Rachna, Suresh's sister. Rachna became pregnant by Akaash, but Akaash was getting married to someone else due to pressure from his mother, Abhi's Taiji. When Pragya and Suresh found out about Rachna's pregnancy (they were still engaged to each other), they confronted Akaash & Abhi's family about the truth. There was some conflict before it became clear that Rachna's baby did belong to Akaash. Anyway due to the misunderstandings and negative media during that business, Abhi developed a dislike for Pragya.

Also they met several other times by accident. Once Pragya accidentally fell into a river, and Abhi saved her, but he thought he was filming a scene for a commercial. They walked away from that as strangers. A few times Abhi's car crossed Pragya's path, and he stopped and they exchanged sharp words with each other. One time Pragya saved Abhi's niece and nephew (by Akaash's brother Raj) from wandering in the streets, but Abhi did not get to know that it was Pragya who did the good deed. Another time Abhi witnessed Pragya being nice to street kids. Many times Pragya helped Abhi's Daadi but he didn't know about it. Once they were both in a jewellery shop and by a series of coincidences, Abhi handed a mangal sutra to Pragya. So anyway there were a lot of encounters and backstory but the final truth was that when Pragya and Abhi got married, they really didn't know each other, and Abhi was under a big misconception about Pragya's character. He wants revenge and she wants a real marriage...that's the story til now. Also Purab-Bulbul are not currently together, Suresh's future is undetermined, there's a possibility that Akaash and Rachna might become involved again...lots of things!!
