true... the incident came as a shock to me... the guy was from a well educated family..both parents were retired bank employees.. his sibling was a doc...

I always thought that such things don't happen in our "circle"... but I was wrong...

hmm I agree
but,
We all say these days women are bolder, but is a fact?
Imagine Yourself as:
1. A single woman, who discovers she is preggers, and the father of her child is not willing to come out in the open to acknowledge even his allegiance.
2. You know for sure that your family is conservative n you wont have their support in thee least. in fact the moment they came to know, they might well throw u out of the house.
3. you and your innocent child (if u insist on giving birth) would be painted in black.
4. As a lone lady with a child, u will be vulnerable to be victim of all kinds of lecherous men.
Now, tell me, no matter how BOLD u may be, what would you do?
Unfortunately, in India, women do not even have that v. basic thing called Security that is the primary right of any woman. Indian society condemns women even if they don't wanna marry, and kind of encourages men in all misdeeds (Be it rape, abuse, or multiple EMAs, they think its their right.) thank fully we do not have to face such things at close quarters. but its the reality
PS - I started writing this comment in the afternoon but had to leave it off and go out.. so I have no idea of the discussions after this.

I agree...not many can make the choice... however strong a woman may be, her life will be reduced to a living hell...

Family would disown the girl ( that is if she is lucky)...else she will be killed ( death under mysterious circumstances)... my family would have disowned me for sure if I were in Nidhi's place

I have heard of apartment associations not letting such women to live as tenants in their complex

Schools insist on having the child's father's name... many school managements won't consider admitting a child whose mom fails to furnish the child's dad's name.. unless..of course the mother is a big shot.

Modernity of the management goes for a toss

family of male friends/colleagues (the decent ones) will view that lady suspiciously... even female friends might nor support her for the fear of their family or "reputation"

Predators will view her as fair game

If she is attacked then the police will doubt the veracity of her statements ( proving her case will be an uphill battle regardless of the law)

A man's transgression is brushed off ... "hormones" are blamed... "mardaangi" etc etc
... the female partner or even the victim is branded a s**t.

In a society where rape victims are branded characterless, how easy is it for a woman to become an unwed mom... some women do dare... but a good chunk of them are killed ..either by their family or by their partner..

There are so many things that make a unwed pregnant lady view abortion as an easy way out..can't blame them.,.. I would have done the same if I were ever trapped in such a situation...not everyone can be a Neena Gupta

@Mudra and Shirley-you must have read about the recent DU student Bhawna Yadav honour killing... but have you heard what her teachers had to say about her ? if not then please read this

The girl wasn't an unwed mother ..she had an inter caste marriage without parental approval( a much smaller crime in the eyes of the society) ..and got killed by her parents

The words of her professors were very enlightening.. they questioned her morals and what not... all for falling in love and getting married?..agreed she wasn't a good student..was irregular to classes.. but the way they spoke about her was disgusting to say the least

The words of these professors-- highly educated people..does provide us an insight in to what people generally think about the choices women make

These people live in Delhi..and not in some small town.

Just imagine how would they have reacted if one of their students chose to give birth to a child conceived out of wedlock??
