Part 3
Nidhi was put on painkillers which were making her slurry. Ashutosh's calm face had made her forget all her pain and she drifted into a haze. She felt she was going back in time and 8 weeks ago……
Prof Lalwani would always quote Dr Ashutosh whenever he came for their cardiology lecture. The name of Dr Ashutosh was so famous that Nidhi had developed an inquisition to see this famous cardiologist.
She waited at the entrance of the guest room expecting a bespectacled or may be bald doctor to arrive. But when Dr Ashutosh arrived, she stood rooted to her place. He looked like Adonis himself to her eyes. She kept staring into those deep black eyes until he extended his hand and said "Hello I am dr Ashutosh." The flower banquet she had in her hand extended even without her senses and he said " Thank you for this." Nidhi broke off her daze and led him into the guest room to where Prof Lalwani was waiting.
After sharing pleasantries, Prof. Lalwani introduced her to Ashutosh. " Dr Ashutosh please meet Dr. Nidhi. She is the chairman of the cardiology society of our college. I must mention she has received the Prof Diwakar Reddy scholarship the only one after you to receive the honour." Ashutosh smiled and said " It's a pleasure to know that our city is in to have a very talented cardiologist very soon."
"It already has one sir. It's is a honour to have you." Nidhi replied.
Nidhis mind was scrutinizing the events that had changed her life in the past 8 weeks. Her life had not been a cake walk. She was left away in Jeevan sandhya charitable trust as a 3 day old baby because she was a girl child. Her parents had been well off though. She was brought up in jeevan sandhya under the love and care of Dr Yograj. Dr Yograj had founded the Jeevan Sandhya Trust in honour of his wife Sandhya who had died of cancer. Dr Yog was so busy in his career and had neglected his household. So after the death of his wife he founded this philonthropical trust which ran medical clinics and medical camps, catering to the needy and had grown into a very respectable charitable organization.
When she was 8, Nidhi found out that her parents had left her on purpose and that she was not orphaned as many of her friends in the orphanage were. This made her a more strong and committed fighter. She always told Dr Yog " Baba, I know that my parents know I am here and they don't care for me... But I will prove to them that I am no less. I will work hard and make it big one day.
From then she worked really hard and concentrated on her education. Dr Yog loved all his children so much that he took care of them as his own. There were about 12 children under his care. Nidhi was this big sister figure for all of them. Some were physically challenged and some orphaned. She had worked her way getting national ranks in her junior college and was the All India 4th rank in her MBBS. She had then worked to get into one of the most prestigious colleges for her post graduation in Cardio-thoracic surgery. Prof Lalwani had been her mentor in her post graduation as Dr Yog and Prof Lalwani were classmates in their MBBS days.
She thus always kept away from any kind of entertainment and was always in the quest to make her academic strengths better. But when at Jeevan Sandhya she was a totally different person. She loved the children there and would do anything to keep them safe and happy. She would play an dtake care of them and would always defend them even when they played pranks and made mischief.
After she had met Dr Ashutosh, whom she had heard so much about from Prof Lalwani, she was mesmerized by his very persona and his intellect. She had begin to adore him and make his her inspiration. She begin to find out secretively how she could do her post graduation internship under him. That's when she learnt that Dr Ashutosh was not married and didn't have anyone as his family and the reason behind it being undiscovered.
This adoration slowly changed into care and she begin to secretively harbour feelings for Dr Ashutosh. She hated herself for liking him first but could not keep up for long. She always denied her feelings to her friends but she had definitely realized that this was the truth of her life that undeniable to her conscience.
That day, she was out to buy some medicines for the orphanage , and while returning she had met with this accident which had landed her in front of the man she yearned to catch a glimpse of.
As Nidhi drifted to sleep, ashutosh kept checking on her every 10 minutes. At around 3am, ashutosh heard a knock on the door of his cabin where he sat on his chair resting his head on the table. It was Dr Ranganath. He rushed in a hurry.
Ashutosh: whats its Dr Ranganath.
Dr Ranganath: sir we have informed Dr Nidhi s guardian about her accident. He will be here any minute.
Ashutosh: that's wonderful. Please inform me once they are here. I would like to hand her over personally to them.
"Sure Sir" replied a confused Dr Ranganath as he left the cabin.
Ashutosh was back to his thoughts..
The serenity and composure of Nidhi's face had created ripples in Ashutosh's mind when he first saw her. . He was very confused with the way his heart was aching to see this talented Doctor. The Prof. Diwakar Reddy foundation never gave their scholarships very easily. It would acertain in many ways that the person receiving it was not only worthy but very deserving of it. So this scholarship was given only when they were sure that the recipient would make the award proud some day.
He kept thinking and replaying all the words that the two of them had shared with each other, the way she had impressed him with her in-depth analysis and questions in his presentation at the convention that day… Ashutosh never forgot that day since then. These memories were the companion of his loneliness.
He heard a faint knock at the door. He asked the person to come in and was surprised to find Prof Lalwani entering his cabin. " Sir, Whats wrong ? IS all ok? Is there anything I can do?" asked confused Ashutosh.
" I got a call for your hospital that Nidhi was admitted here after an accident. Do you know who is the doctor seeing her?" Ashutosh was shocked and could not find the connection. He knew that Prof Lalwani had just one son who was settled abroad.
"Yes sir. I am in-charge. But how did you get to know?"
Dr Lalwani then explained the whole situation and said that he had rushed since Dr Yog had gone to the US for six months to meet his daughter. The incharge of the orphanage had no choice but to inform Prof Lalwani as he had promised to take care of the children in Dr Yogs absence.
It took Ashutosh some time to accept the facts that Prof Lalwani had just told him. he requested prof Lalwani to go home and rest, and assured him that he would take care of Nidhi at Kotnis and keep him updated.
After Prof Lalwani left, ashutosh went to Nidhis room. He found her sleeping peacefully under the painkillers effect with a serene smile on her face.
He went down and sat down on a chair next to her, and kept seeing her sleep peacefully. He told himself God please give me all the pain she is going through. I cant see her suffer like this. He drifted slowly to catch a small nap sitting right there and his head bend down near her hands.
Nidhis eyes opened slowly to find dr ashutosh sleeping in a chair sitting next to her bed. She slowly tried to get up and her moving woke Ashutosh up.
Ashutosh looked up at her and she smiled back at him. Ashutosh was so relieved to see her up and smiling. He had turned numb to see Nidhi lying on the Trauma ICU bed. Now she was up like a blooming flower, the rays of the early morning sun brightening her face through the window.
"Good Morning Doctor Nidhi. Hope you are feeling better. I must inform Prof Lalwani that you are fine." Ashutosh said.
"Good morning sir! I am feeling better." That's when Nidhi realized she was in a room which resembled a luxurious room of her medical college hospital.
She stopped Ashutosh as he walked out to call Prof Lalwani and said " Sir can I go home?"
Ashutosh turned and saw her face. He was terrified at the very idea of sending here away in this state and then he realized that Nidhi's face conveyed the fact that she could not ask Dr Yog or the orphanage to bear the cost of this luxurious room or hospital stay. If she was back in Jeevan Sandhya, she could take care of herself.
Ashutosh looked at her lovingly and said " Dr Nidhi, Please don't worry. You are in Kotnis under my care and I will ensure you are that you will not step out of this room until you are completely fit and fine."
