Finally caught this oh-so-controversial tying scene 😲😆 I loved it for its symbolism, but first a few other observations.
The room numbers were very significant.
29 = how old Dev was when he and Sona split up
7 = how many years they have been apart
8 = Dev's new room, and a fresh start for all of them. The fact that Dev took initiative to get this room shows that he is taking initiative to lead all of them into this new beginning. Sona also found herself locked out of 7 -- she can't go back to the time when she and Dev were apart -- and she had to go through room 8 to get to Dev and Soha.
Dev is testing the waters with Sona, and the more he observes her, the more he realises how hard she is working to keep her facade of invincibility up. He can see glimpses of the Sonakshi he knew and loved, and the way I see it, he is making conscious efforts to free her, using all the tools he has at his disposal. When he went all flirty in order to tie her up, it reminded me a lot of their first dance, where she felt the first twinge of attraction after he expressed that flirty side. Deep down, Sona is still that soft-hearted dreamer -- we can see that -- and Dev is trying desperately to figure it out.
As for the tying itself, like I said, I thought it was deeply symbolic. Sona was already tied to that balcony by her pride, and Dev is making it a point to emphasise her tendency not to ask for help. Tying her up was a way to physically manifest his view that she had trapped herself, and by translating her pride into physical restriction, Dev gave her the means to break away from it. A long time ago, Sona told Dev that she didn't want him to rescue her; she just wanted him to make her strong so that she could face her problems herself. Today, the scenario played out in a way reminiscent of that request.
And for the record, I also agree with all the GM analysis on this subject. 🤓
In the few minutes that tying up Sona bought Dev, he accomplished a lot, both in terms of his relationship with Soha and the relationship between Soha and Sona. He got those few important minutes with Soha, and with Golu's amazing set-up was able to impress her. She even asked to be the one to tie the blindfold. This was also symbolic -- when he is blinded by Soha, he will be able to sink the basket. He also managed to break a cycle of potential toxicity that is cropping up between Soha and Sona (and who would know better about this kind of relationship?). By stalling Soha when she wanted to get her mother, he gave Sona the chance to come herself, thus eliminating Soha's sense of responsibility for her mother. I am not sure if this makes much sense, but the best way I can think to explain is that Sona has been stagnant, on autopilot, for a very long time. Dev's provocation is acting as the pull-back effect of a slingshot. In reaction, she is shooting forward, head-on into all of the emotional issues she has suppressed for so long.
Too much else happened, and I am too intimidated to try and write about everything, but if you'd like to know what I thought of anything specific that happened last week, just let me know! 😃
