Dev and Happiness. In yesterday's episode, Ishwari told Dev that she had seen him happy after such a long time. Dev replied that he was always happy and asked for Golu's confirmation on this, and Golu backed his bigcha up. It made me wonder, what did Ishwari see yesterday that she has been missing for the past seven years? It was the Dev who binds his family together. This effort to bind was Dev 1.0's trademark, especially pre-Sona. His primary goal was to ensure the happiness of his family, and since so much of their misery had come from poverty, he saw money as the best way to do this. In order to cater to his family's needs, he willingly sacrificed any effort towards his own happiness... until Sona came along. But even in his choice of life partner, Dev didn't stop thinking about the needs of his family. He fell in love with someone equally selfless, who would understand his feelings of obligation and indebtedness. But still, he tried to fit his own happiness into a small compartment in order that it didn't interfere with catering to his family's needs -- his first priority. That is why we saw so much of Dev and Sona's relationship play out behind closed doors, and in stolen moments. Sona and Dev were content with those moments, as both of them felt keenly the responsibility of their respective, and each other's, families. But Ishwari's insecurities did not allow her to see this. She worried that if he catered more and more to his own happiness, he would slip away from his responsibilities in pursuit of pleasure. So she made it her mission to curtail his personal happiness, and made him miserable with guilt every time he did something for himself, or to improve his relationship with Sona.Cut to the break up. Dev realised that Ishwari had been deliberately sabotaging his personal happiness for her needs, and he realised that the rest of the family didn't care for their relationships or for his feelings, but only for his money. So he finally chose to direct his efforts toward his own personal happiness, and that is what he has been pursuing for the past seven years, successful to a large extent. But despite his best efforts, he could only be happy enough to carry himself. He didn't have the emotional stability to lift his family with him, with the exception of Golu, and that is because Golu re-energised him in turn. Those who were only dependent on his money, and unashamed to say so, thrived. Those who were dependent on him emotionally (pretty much just Ishwari) languished. What has changed after Sona came back into the picture? When he sees glimpses of the old Sona, it gives Dev the (subconscious) faith that good things exist, and can remain good. He defended Ishwari's stories where everything was good, when Golu insisted that a villain was necessary. Dev is a man who wants to believe in kindness and justice, but all of his relationships have taught him otherwise. Even through her outward hostility, the fact that Sona remains the fiery, independent, and proud woman he fell in love with gives Dev a dose of that faith. And after locking her in the office, the idea that she might need him again, if even for a moment, gave a huge boost to his happiness meter. As a result, Dev had so much happiness that it was enough to actually share with his family. The Ludoillustrated how powerful a genuinely happy Dev is. His genuine happiness spreads and brings the whole family together, makes Ishwari feel motivated to do what she loves, and of course, has Vicky and XGKB shaking in their boots! If only Ishwari had known seven years ago, that the happier Dev is, the more he is able to do for his family, things might have been very different. Like Sona said so long ago, his happiness didn't have to compete with his obligation to his family, it could complete it.This whole situation reminds me of an assembly we had when I was in school, about priorities (I'm sure many of you have seen/heard it in some form or another). The speaker took up a jar, and filled it with potatoes. She asked us if the jar was full and most students answered yes. She then poured beans into the jar and they settled in the spaces between the potatoes. Again, she asked if the jar was full, and we said yes. She then proceeded to pour in a glass of water to show the jar could still hold more. After that, she took another jar and poured water in first -- of course, nothing else could fit. That's kind of how I understand Dev. Dev 1.0 had filled his jar with water, because he prioritiesed the happiness of others. Because their demands were endless, it left no room for other priorities, including his own personal happiness, which lay in his relationship with Sona. Dev 2.0 is learning to put the potatoes in first. 😉

@Bold: Wow! this never struck me. Amazing interpretation👏.Dev's reactions to Sona definitely originate at much more deeper levels of his psyche. He may calm down momentarily; but then he may again try to reunite with her, intentionally or sub-consciously...Then Suhana is also in the picture..I see return of the dialogue "Itne saal tumse door rha hu...24 ghante 7to din..."😉😆

Dev and Happiness.
That's an apt analysis of Dev 1.0 and 2.0
He is beginning to get curious about what Sonakshi has been upto in the last 7 years. Poking and prodding at various points including trusted office staff. Like you said, he has learnt to prioritise and feels happier. More importantly he has learnt to say no
He wants to see if Sonakshi did the same because her happiness matters too. He can already see she isn't afraid of the dark. Reminding her to keep the lofty dialogues to the side and bring the barriers down. It's okay to ask for help. Little does he know there is a Mr Obodro embodied in a tiny Sonkashi who had to take priority in his ex-wife's life in the last 7 years.
(On a side note, Dixits' crisis was that they never really looked at how far they had come. Nikki and Riya were obviously spared. However, Ishwari & Dev (& Neha) never looked at their present in an attempt to prepare themselves for the future. Past was traumatic. Dire Poverty must have scarred their souls. The way Dev carries that baggage and holds on to his past in the form of the memorabilia is proof. He hasn't made that mistake with Sonkashi though. She left a deep mark on him, but he isn't clinging on to it. In fact we even saw a glimpse of letting go in Ishwari but then she was back.) They were both able to guardedly proceed in the new found happiness for a few seconds. Jholi-failoaing 2.0 however is on.
Vicky has obviously done more damage than first conceived. The fire that was put out in shimla was left burning in the farmhouse. It made an appearance at Dev's office yet again, in more ways than one. The spark in Dev & Sona's persona has to be felt to be appreciated. They are both finding it so hard to keep this facade on they are hiding behind big words - Male Ego, Mirrors and unethical business practices. Curious to know what the other has been up to - overnight and over the 7 years. Mr Dixit, have you stopped snooping into other people's lives then, eh? These two bekarar dil, I tell you. The week started with Dev sweet talking Sona's staff and sneaking into her files and then ended with Sonakshi doing serious damage because Dev carelessly left his own office unlocked. That one left me puzzled, Dev
Some random thoughts:
1. I continue to enjoy the interplay of colours and textures in the show. Sonakshi in her prim and proper brocades&silks and Dev with rugged looks. Elena with all that heavy silk fabric in blacks and blues & Vicky in his haughty 3 pieces. The whole Ishwari niwas has had a change except Ishwari and Dev's rooms. The Boses in their old home with a new look.
2. Will Asha speak to Sonakshi about her parenting style?
3. Did Neha call and only speak to Dev? That warms my heart actually.
4. Golu kept reminding us of Sonakshi while Soha reminds us of Dev, doesn't she? Hiding her feelings and adapting her responses to keep the audience happy. My heart skips a beat when I try and imagine the inter-relationships in coming episodes. I hope in time, Dev will show Soha how to put in the potatoes first.
5. The way we see their flashbacks for a fraction of a second vs long ones earlier is a brilliant piece of drama. Ishwari and Dev were letting go but sonakshi came back just in time
