Chapter 5

Dev was watching all this from outside the door when the announcement was made. Suddenly the door swung open and two of the gunmen walked out with the gun held to Sonakshi's forehead.

Dev's heart was in his mouth. He also noticed that Sona was so calm almost expressionless. He saw that there was a bit of blood from the left side of lips and the left cheek bore imprints of someone's hands. He understood what had happened. He moved a few steps forward towards them and just said "Sona!". Sonakshi looked at him and smiled and she just said "Dev - don't come closer - these people can harm you!". Nikhil immediately said "Mr. Dixit I warned you not to interfere in or workings - now please move back". Nikhil looked at the gunmen and put his gun down on the floor and turned to the six officers standing around him and motioned them also to keep their weapons down. The officers did as Nikhil asked them to and moved back from the gunmen standing with Sonakshi. The officers asked the gunmen "What do you all want? Money or anything else. Please speak up!". Dev was quietly watching this from behind and was wondering what to do. He looked at Sona and his heart broke. The need to hold her close to his heart was overwhelming. He wanted to comfort her and hear her hear beat next to his. He realized that Sona was looking at him directly and her eyes were trying to tell him something. He felt his eyes filling with tears. He brushed his tears away and all realized all the fights and disagreements they had in the last few days were all trivial compared to the situation now. All those differences very so simple and not anything that couldn't be sorted out.

Suddenly he noticed two armed anti riot officers coming from behind the gun men and they tried to overpower the gunmen taking them by surprise from behind. The next few minutes would forever be etched in Dev Dixit's memory for the rest of his life.

He watched in slow motion as the officers attacked the gunmen from behind and all he hear were two gun shots and watched as Sona... his Sona slipped on the floor and he could see blood flowing from two places on her left arm. She saw him one last time and just waved him away and looked at him in his eyes as if her eyes were trying to tell him to go away. Dev pushed back against the policemen in hurry and need to be with Sona before the anti riot officers managed to shoot the gun men and as they fell there was chaos all around as several more officers came to the scene. Dev managed to get through the crowd and was next to Sona who was on the floor and unconscious, in the next two minutes.

He out her head on his lap, her blood was on his trouser leg in no time. She was not responding to his pleas of "Sona, Sona get up !!". By then the doctors came and they had a difficult time prying Sona away from Dev. They took her on a stretcher into the Operating Theatre on the same floor, ironically the same one where Sona had operated on Ayush a few hours ago. As the doors of the operating theatre swung and closed, Dev broke down completely. He was kept brushing away the tears from his eyes. Then suddenly he realized that his phone was ringing in his pocket.

He saw that the call was from Saurav. He hesitated and picked up the phone "Hello Dev" he said. Saurav continued "Dev - are u still at the hospital? Did you get any news of Sona". Dev was silent and didn't know what to reply. "Dev are you there on the phone. Can you hear me?" Saurav said. Dev finally said "Saurav Sona has been shot and they are now operating on her to remove the bullet. She has lost a lot of blood". Saurav was stunned and he said "I am coming just now". Dev said "yes she is in the operating theatre on the fourth floor".

Dev disconnected the call and continued to pace outside the room when Dr. Sinha and few other doctors came there. Seeing Dev there Dr. Sinha told him "Don't worry Dev our best surgeon is operating on Sonakshi now. We will save her. She saved the lives of so many persons here". Suddenly, the doors opened and Saurav, Rhea and Nikki walked in and rushed to Dev and asked "Sona kaisi hai Dev". Dev just said "She is in the operating theatre. Nothing will happen to her Saurav. She is strong" and his voice broke and he hugged Saurav and then his sisters. They all stood around when suddenly the doors opened and Iswari, Bijoy and Asha walked in towards Dev. They all asked "where is Sona and how is she now?". Dev looked at the three of them and said "She was shot while trying to save the lives of the children in this ward and now the doctors are operating on her". Just then Dr. Sinha came and told the family that had gathered around "Sonakshi's operation is over now. She will take another two-three hours to regain consciousness. We are shifting her to ICU so that we can monitor her. She was lucky that the bullet missed her vital organs". Dev said "Thanks Dr. Sinha - can I see her once?". Dr. Sinha tells him "only after she is taken to the room". Dev nodded and just then Sona was brought out. She was looking so tiny and her eyes were closed. Bijoy and Asha went to her immediately and Bijoy was the one who was inconsolable and Asha was a strong one. Bijoy kept saying "Sona uthe jao, Baba aachi eikhane, ammake dekhbe naa ki?". Dev was so stunned that he couldn't move at first. He went to Sona and silently just placed a gentle kiss on her forehead. Dev then gently moved Baba from Sona's side and took him aside and hugged him and said "Baba don't worry please ... Sona will be alright... We are all there with her". He then went to his Maa and she just said "Dev I am so sorry for all that has happened now today. I realise that I was so childish and immature that I never accepted Sona as a daughter as I should have. I always treated her as a bahu and tried to ignore her goodness. I don't know now whether I will ever get a chance to apologise to her." Saying that Ishwari broke down. Dev was silent and he just hugged his mother and said "Nothing will happen to Sona". He was silent on the forgiveness part as he understood that only Sona should have the right to decide whether his mother should be forgiven or not. He had made many decisions without consulting Sona and he didn't want to repeat the mistake.

He moved away and told Nikki and Rhea to take Maa home and he told Saurav to take Maa and Baba home. He said "I will be here till Sona gets conscious. I know that all of us need to be fresh and awake when Sona gets better. That's why I will stay at the hospital now. You all can come back in the morning". Saying these words he silently followed the doctors to Sona's room. Slowly the crowd disbursed. Dev reached Sona's room and the nurses asked him to wait outside till such time they settled the patient in bed and arranged all the wires and tubes and equipments around her carefully. Dev went in ten minutes later and was again struck by how small she looked on the bed. She was breathing deeply. After a few hours, he finally found himself alone with her. He took her right hand his and just said "Sona I am sorry ... I am really sorry ... I didn't mean to do this to you. I promise I will never do this again. Wont you give me one more chance. " The tears fell from his eyes on their hands joined together. Sona slept on silently.

Just then Dr. Sharma walked in and Dev stood up and moved aside. Dr. Sharma checked Sona's vitals and checked the readings on the various machines attached to Sona and then turned around to Dev and said "Sonakshi was lucky that the bullet missed her vital organs and though she has lost a lot of blood, the baby is safe". On hearing this Dev was stunned and he just managed to mumble "Baby?" Dr. Sharma smiled and said "I think Sonakshi might have wanted to surprise you then she is about three to four weeks pregnant. Congratulations Dev! I am around and have asked the nurses to let me know when Sonakshi regains consciousness". He walked out of the room and closed the door softly behind him. Dev was stunned for the second time that day. He didn't know what to say and do. The one person with whom this news should be shared or rather the person responsible for the happiness was not in a position to be happy with him. He was willing to wait. Probably for the first time in many years Dev decided to pray to God. He tried bargaining with god and ended up pleading with him for Sonakshi's and his unborn baby's life.

Towards early dawn, Dev noticed a movement on the bed and Sonakshi tried to open her eyes. Sona opened her eyes and the first thing she felt was pain and the first person she saw was Dev. She smiled and Dev was delirious. He just came and hugged her awkwardly with all the wires and tubes and soon they both were crying. He said "Let me call Dr. Sharma". Sona stopped him and said "Before that I want to tell you something. Dev.. aap Papa banne wale hain". Dev smiled through his tears "Mujhe pata chala kal raat ko. Thank you Sona for this gift of life". Sona smiled and said "I should be the one thanking you. I wanted to surprise you yesterday but all this happened". He said "From now on, you will pull no more such stunts Dr. Bose, do you understand".

Sona nodded and pulled Dev into a tight hug and cried on his shoulder and said "I will not do anything. I was so scared Dev that I will die without sharing this news with you!" Dev comforted her and said "Don't worry nothing will happen to you. There are many people who are waiting for you to get conscious including Maa, Baba, Maa and of course how can I forget Rhea, Nikki and Sourav." But before that I want us to be alone for sometime because once they all find out I am sure we will not get any time alone for quite a while!" Sona nodded and they kept hugging each other, both the hearts beating in tandem as one..

Ahh...what a beautiful ending😊😊...dev and ishwari understood sona's importance in dev's life...all that happened was terrific experience but at the end all is well...
