A love story blooming again. It felt as if a new world for the lovebirds...great update
Hi guys, Part 4 is here. Hope you like it :)
It was raining the day he took her home. Sutures removed and hair covering any physical scars, her excitement to leave the hospital room was almost palpable. But then, as they drove further away from the hospital and closer to the unknown, Dev felt her grow rigid in the seat next to him. By the time they entered the driveway of Ishwari Niwas, she was so tense her shoulders had taken residence next to her ears.
He gave her a sideways look. "If you don't relax, I'll get yelled at for raising your blood pressure."
That earned him a quick smile, her lips, an impossible shade of pink, stretched upward.
Ishwari came to greet them at the door. Sonakshi's face immediately brightened on seeing Ishwari. She ran forward and hugged her, taking Ishwari by surprise. She felt bad for treating her the way she had in the past 3 years, always being cold and distant. Sonakshi remembered her Ishwari Auntyji who was warm and welcoming, who had considered her a part of the family, who had been a confidant and guide when her son had succeeded in breaking up her marriage proposal with Kushal Roy. For Sonakshi, she was her closest friend in the house. Nikki and Riya were young, Dev was practically still a stranger to her, and all of a sudden she had to adjust as the daughter in law of the house when she was accustomed to just being a nutritionist.
Nikki came running and hugged Sonakshi. "Sona bhabhi, its soo good to have you back. The house was so lonely without you." Sonakshi flinched when Nikki addressed her as bhabhi instead of the usual Sona Di' and it did not go unnoticed by Dev. He quickly changed the topic. "Nikki, if your bharat milap' is finished, let Sonakshi rest for awhile." Sonakshi smiled at Nikki and looked around the house " Where are neha and riya?" she asked innocently. Nikki gave her a confused look before understanding, "Oh sorry, I forgot. You have become Ghajini now." "Nikki!" warned Dev, but surprisingly, Sonakshi burst out laughing. Dev smiled seeing both the girls fall back into their old habits.
He explained to Sonakshi that Neha was happily married to Ranveer, and Riya had gone abroad for further studies. "So its just you, me, Auntyji and Nikki now?" asked Sonakshi. "Yes, pretty much" confirmed Dev. Ishwari and Nikki left them alone after some time and Dev lead Sonakshi to the kitchen. She felt at ease in the kitchen, it being her workplace'. It was a safe room, full of appliances and furniture - not mattresses and pillows. "So, I know that we're married now and al, but I'm still Auntyji's nutritionist right?" she asked. Dev laughed, and she felt something tug at her heart. "Yes, now you're more like the entire family's nutritionist. Only, an unpaid one." he chuckled. That got Sonakhhi to laugh as well. He smiled again and Sonakshi felt it all the way in her toes. And there it was again: that feeling of amazement. She didn't think she lacked in self-esteem; without overbearing conceit or narcissism, she liked what she saw in the mirror, but there was an almost unsettling feeling of awe when she was around Dev. Like it was some kind of miracle she'd managed to fascinate the man before her long enough for him to want a home with her.
They moved on to the hall and she walked along the line of photos in various angles on the ledge.
There were family pictures of the Dixit family, and she was surprised to find herself in so many of them. There were some pictures of her with the Dixit sisters and some of Dev and her, in so many beautiful locales. This man had fulfilled her lifelong dream of travelling the world. The row of photographs led her to Dev's room. Well, it was their room now. She felt herself smiling at that thought, and quickly reprimanded herself. It felt strange to see herself in all those pictures and have no recollection of when or how they were clicked. She felt an irrational resentment towards the girl in the pictures, smiling blissfully back at her. Dev walked over behind her. She could feel his solid warmth behind her and, suddenly tired, she felt the ridiculous urge to just lean back at him. Give the burden of holding herself up to him. Dev noticed her forlorn expression and asked her what was wrong. She just shook her head and replied "Nothing, it's just - I always dreamt of travelling the world, and all these pictures, it's me in them but I don't remember ever seeing any of it." "So we'll go again" Dev said easily. She turned around and stared long and hard in his eyes. She always knew Dev Dixit was a nice person at heart, but this man in front of her was something else. The pure love and conviction in his eyes melted her heart. Little did she know, it was because of her support that he had been able to reach this level of emotional openness and maturity.
She nodded and took half a step towards the next set of pictures. They were personal ones, she could tell. The first one was a self-portrait, as evidenced by Dev's hand extending from the edge. Only half her face was visible, the other half was squished against his as she bit his cheek with feral teeth, one eye on the camera the entire time. He looked faintly amused, his eyes a golden honey near her darker one.
She moved ahead, there was an awkward space in between their selfie and the last one on the mantle. Sonakshi put her hand over the empty wood, as if willing the ensemble to be more complete. Giving up, she moved to the final photograph.
It was another self-portrait, but this time it was her arm holding the camera. They were attempting to kiss, but smiling too hard. She stared into the picture, willing it to restore her memory. Nothing happened, but she continued staring.
Was it even possible for people to be that happy?
She felt strange that she didn't feel any awkwardness watching herself kiss Dev. It was as if her mind had forgotten the memories but her heart remembered. The doctor in her rolled her eyes at her romanticizing her memory loss, but the innocent girl in her couldn't help but blush at the thought.
"How did we begin? As in, did you ask me out or.." she trailed off. "I confessed first, if that's what you're asking" said Dev, with a smirk on that perfect face of his.
"So how did you realize you wanted to be with me?" she enquired. "I closed my eyes and saw you" he answered honestly.
Sonakshi almost snickered at his answer before she realized he wasn't joking. "Oh come on, There has to be more. You closed your eyes and saw me didn't automatically lead to all this.." she trailed off and spread her arms out to gesture at their room.
He inclined his head in agreement. "We dated for a while before.. all this'" he quoted, aping her gesture.
"Dated," she echoed, her arms crossed over the back of the sofa as she sat down. She propped her chin on her arms and looked at him.
"Dated"
"Like dinners and movies and picnics"
He laughed then.
"Why do I feel there's more to this story?" she asked.
"There is" he answered. "But that's a story for another day. Right now you need to rest."
It probably wasn't so neatly packaged; things rarely were. But it was so beautiful to hope. So she asked, her voice tentative "So everything was okay?"
He squeezed her hand. "Everything is okay"
They gazed at each other for a while, hands still connected. Then because amnesia gave her a free pass to ask anything and everything with a wide eyed blank stare, she grew bold.
"Did we love each other?"
His hand tightened around hers once and then gentled, the moment so sudden, it felt like a spasm.
"Felt like it." Then, before she could think about what that cryptic answer meant, he stood up, releasing her hand. "You should get to bed."
Ah, more rest," she said dryly, also getting to her feet.
"Your closet is the one closest to the bathroom," he said pointing.
"Where - I mean - where will you..." There was no question in there, but he knew.
"I moved some of my things into the spare bedroom."
She wasn't sure what moved her more: the considerations of his actions or the self-effacing manner in which he listed them. Either way, she felt the warm tide of something ineffable roll through her, taking her breath as it subsided.
"I can sleep in the spare bedroom."
He shook his head, "This is your room. You should stay here."
"It's your room, too," she corrected. "I don't want to kick you out of it."
He cocked his head to the side and stared at her, honey eyes full of amusement. "Is that an invitation?"
She blushed a deep red and looked at her feet. His laugh, husky and genuine filled the room. "Good night, Sonakshi."
"Night," she said, lifting her head when a click told her the door had shut.
As soon as she realized she was alone, she quickly turned on her heel, dragging the vanity stool up to her closet, she stood on it and started rummaging through her closet, trying to find something, anything of importance.
Success arrived in the form of a shoebox. Curiosity piqued, she stretched upward until she had a firm grasp on the box. Two minutes later, closet door still flung open, she was cross-legged on the bed, trying tearing through the photographs and various objects.
After two hours of staring at frozen images and holding random rubbish, she came to the conclusion that a memory box was only useful if one actually remembered. If one didn't, it was all nonsense.
A pressed flower.
A slab of what looked like jagged concrete.
Letters and cards filled with illegible scrawls.
She had given up, idly holding a charm bracelet when her eyes fell on a bright red foil shaped like a rose. Putting the bracelet back in the box, she picked up the foil, surprised by how light it was. The chocolate was gone, but the foil had carefully been preserved to maintain its flower shape. She turned it over in her palm.
And promptly dropped it in surprise.

Author's note: So she remembers something. A memory. What do think it's going to be? Is it the incident Dev is so intent on making her forget? Or something else entirely?
Let me know what you think?
Love,
Malvika
