I have given the meaning as I have understood. Pls correct me if I am wrong. I don't know some vegetable names. So, feel free to add your comments. Also, if there is any other meaning, pls discuss coz everyone perceives the lyrics in different ways. KaNNadhaasan's lyrics have that kind of magic. Other songs in this line are ponnenben, aththaan en aththaan, paarththen and many more. We will see all of them one by one.
Aththik kaay song is a song sung by Sivaji-Dhevika and Balaji-Vijaya on the first night of their marriage. Folks, it is not uncommon for a song to be inserted in a first night scene in those days.
Devika sees the full moon showering its light on her side and starts this song. This song has lots of veggies mentioned if you take it in the literal sense but it is a word play effectively put in use by KaNNadhaasan to convey a totally different meaning.
veggies used in this song:
Aththik kaay - Fig
Paavaik kaay - Bitter gourd
Avaraik kaay - some type of wide beans.
Kovaik kaay - Tindora.
thudhuvilangkaay = thudhuvaLai is one type of greens.
MaadhuLangk kaay - Pomegranate.
Yelakkaay - cardomom
Vaazhaik kaay - Raw plantain
Jaadhik kaay -another Herb.
MiLagaay - chilli
VeLLarik kaay - Cucumber.
Korravarang kaay - Another type of slender beans.
aththikaay has another meaning.
Split this into Ath + thikkaay
Ath meaning andha
thikku means direction
kaay kaay = Means vegetable and also shine.
She asks the moon to shower her light in the groom's direction coz she is feeling shy.
ith = indha
thikkaay - in this direction
Pls do not shine in my direction since you are also a girl like me and you will understand me better.
Now, Sivaji sings to the moon asking the moon to shine in the bride's direction coz she is his life and he wants to see her face all the time.
PS: kannik kaay aasaikkaay kaadhal koNda paavaikkaay
angE kaay avaraik kaay mangai enthan kOvaikkaay Pls moon, Do this favour to this loving girl's wishes and shine in my king's direction.
kannikkaay = indha kannikkaaga (For this girl)
aasaikkaay = en aasaikkaaga (For my wishes)
kaadhal konda paavaikkaay = kaadhal konda indhap pennukkaga ( For this girl who is in love)
ange kaay, avarai kaay = avar irukkum andhap pakkam kaay.
mangai = girl
paavai means girl. paavaik kaay is bitter gourd.
endhan ko = endhan arasan(Shine towards my sweetheart's direction) KaNNadhaasan uses paavaik kaay(bitter gourd) and kovaik kaay(Tindora) to tell the moon to shine in the groom's direction.
Sivaji replies:
maadhuLam kaay aanaalum ennuLam kaay aagumo
ennai nee kaayaadhe ennuyirum neeyallavo
maadhuLam kaay = pomegranate
maadhu = girl
uLam = Heart,(nenjam, uLLam)
The girl's heart is not yet ripe, meaning not ready to accept him yet, unlike his heart.
ennai nee kaayaadhe ennuyirum neeyallavo meaning Pls, do not make me beg you for what I want now. You are my life.
TMS: iravukkaay uRavukkaay
yEngkum intha Ezaikkaay
neeyum kaay nidhamum kaay
nEril niRkum ivaLaik kaay
Iravukkaaga, uravukkaaga yengum indha yezhaikkaaga, vennilave, nee en neril niRkum ivaLaik kaay.)
I have been waiting for this night and this relationship and so, moon, please shine in her direction.)
susIlaa: uruvam kaay aanaalum
paruvam kaay aagumO
ennai nee kaayaadhE ennuyirum neeyallavO
(Thought I am grown up, I am still shy. So, pls do not shine in my direction.)
Now scene shifts to Balaji-Vijaya's room.
vijaya sings:
yElakkaay vaasanai pOl engkaL uLLam vaazhakkaay
jaadhikkaay kEttadhu pOl thanimai inbam kaniyakkaay Our heart is full of fragrance like yelak kaay. We are granted our wishes to be alone in this moment to be happy.
Her husband sings:
sonnadhellaam viLangkaayO thUthu vaLangkaay veNNilaa
ennai nee kaayaadhE ennuyirum neeyallavO ViLangkaayo = Don't you understand?
thudhu vazhangaay = Be a messenger to my lady love.
He tells moon: Don't you understand what we said? Pls be my messenger and tell her that she is my life.
Now, Balaji is keen on ating all the fruits and sweets and Vijaya hides a laddu and feeds him with a chilli instead. Then she feels bad and he sings:
PBS: uLLamelaam miLagaayO ovvoru pEchchuraiththaayO
veLLarikkaay piLanthadhu pOl veNNilavE siriththaayO
uLLamelaam miLagaayO ovvoru pEchchuraiththaayO
veLLarikkaay piLanthadhu pOl veNNilavE siriththaayO jamunaa: kOdhai enaik kaayaadhE koRRavarangkaay veNNilaa PBS: iruvaraiyum kaayaathE thanimaiyilEngkaay veNNilaa Balaji sings: The new wife fusses and he asks her, " Is your heart ruthless like spicy chilli and each of your word hurts and look at this moon, she is laughing at us like a split cucumber showing its seed (teeth).
un uLLam ellaam milagaayai pola kaaramo?
un ovvoru pechchum uraikkiradhu, kaaramaaga irukkiradhu. ennidam inimaiyaagap pesu, kanne.
vennilave, idhai ellaam paarthu nee veLaarik kaay piLandhaal varisaiyaagath theriyum vidhaigalaip pola azhagaana pallaik kaati sirikkiraayo? (kindal seygiraayo?)
Now, again Vijaya sings:
jamunaa: kOdhai enaik kaayaadhE koRRavarangkaay veNNilaa
kodhai = Girl
koRRvar = arasar
Vijaya asks the moon to shine in her king's direction, not in her direction.
Now, a tired Balaji doesn't want to continue this fight and comes up with this line.
iruvaraiyum kaayaathE thanimaiyil Engkaay veNNilaa Don't shine in both of our directions. Pls shine alone and pine in solitude. :)
Then both the pairs sing the first two lines away to glory.
