Tarun in two minds about Kituu....

Rejection in love and disrespect at workplace, both these disheartening events happened in the life of Yuvraj Dhanoa aka Tarun Khanna of Kituu Sab Janti Hain.

"The show has lately become too women centric"

Even though he plays a COO of a news channel, headed by Maliaka (Shveta Salve), she keeps rebuking him in front of his junior colleagues and treats him like a doormat. Unable to take this humiliation anymore, Yuvraj (Tarun) is shown to have flown off to UK. And since the past two weeks, his character has been missing. We decide to probe into the matter and we were shocked to know that the actor maybe deciding to call it quits!

Tarun reasons out his disappearance act, " The show has lately become too women centric. Kittu... was essentially about how a news channel functions. The primary reason for which I had taken up this show has now drifted away. The focus is more on Kittu (Ami Trivedi), Maliaka (Shweta Salve) and Rohan (Amit Verma)., while my character was being sidelined."

He adds on the same note, " Hence I am now considering to opt out of Kittu.... It's not that I have a problem with a women based show, but at the same time I do not want my acting skills to get wasted.Complying with my thoughts, the production house came up with the track where I migrate to UK. Right now I am in a hibernation mode and I am considering a few new proposals . However, if things work out in Kituu... then maybe my character would make a comeback with some negative overtones."

So will he or won't he? The question is lurking both in the minds of Tarun and his fans.

What's common between Delnaaz and Aarzoo?

There's something common between Delnaaz Paul and Arzoo Govitrikar. It's their passion for bags. Delnaz has over 100 bags and she rarely repeats a bag at a party. In Arzoo's case, she loves branded bags. And we hear she's got more than 30. In fact her new bag costed her a good Rs 93,000!

However, Amit Varma has a different story to tell. "I have been repeatedly confused with Amit Sadh, when I was asked over the phone 'Have you signed anything after Star One's Guns n Roses?' and I had to tell them I am the Hotel Kingston guy," he reveals. In fact, Varma recently got a call from a production house (that was actually meant for Amit Sadh) offering him a serial, since he was not seen on TV, and he had to say, 'I don't have any free dates. I am busy with Sahara One's Kittu Sab Jaanti Hai.'

Where's the party tonight?

While the whole nation is rocking-n-rolling on this latest Bollywood number, we take a deeper prod into this whole concept of 'party circuit'. This carousal not just acts as an occasion for merry making but also means strict business. Networking, cajoling the media, announcements, discourses; all this and much more takes place! Also the recent buzz these days is 'free parties', where stars host bashes without shelling dough, and in the event, the venue gets publicity as the do gets covered by media because of the starry presence!

Prashant Golecha corners some of our renowned television celebs and figure out their take on the serious and the lighter side of this party culture.

Rohit Roy - I am used to parties since aeons. Media's interest has rocketed with regards to TV bashes. Networking does happen but one doesn't get work by merely attending parties. The advantage is that one gets to mingle with people from your own industry. Nowadays, any and every person can be on page 3. I don't even recognize half the people when I open the papers.
As far as free parties goes, nothing is free in life. Normally TV actors charge 1-3 lakhs just for an appearance in restaurant or product launches. If the star is able to gather 50 other TV stars for a party it benefits the place, and by doing this they are doing a favour to a particular venue. Throwing a bash is an art. The food and booze are the vital ingredients to make a party rock. When I throw a party at home, the press is banned.

Shubhaavi K. - I opt only for selective dos; if I like the host and if I get to dance. Most of the people go to parties for PR. There are numerous networking opportunities, as one can talk to people they were longing for. Parties happen in every profession, whether it is the corporate sector, or Bollywood or Tellywood. Publicity happens and it works in the interest of all. I have not heard of TV actors throwing free parties.

Gaurav Chopraa - Publicity is one of the major objectives of throwing and attending parties, which is a norm nowadays. Also if one attends thousand parties, it becomes necessary to throw one! Talking about the media, I guess it's a case of demand and supply. Media needs events to cover even, if it is not fundamentally important. What new news can you print in five different papers; after all there is a limit! I attend only 75 percent of the parties I am invited for, but it's difficult to say NO. My criteria for giving a nod are a) the host and b) the occasion. As far as networking goes, the younger breed gets to approach the senior stars and also gives us chance to meet people whom we can't because of our busy schedules. For example, Rajev Paul lives a stone throw away from my house, but I meet him only at parties.

Shwetta Keswani - I am tired of these parties, and since the last six months I have given it a pause. It is too much of an effort. They have become too commercial and pretentious. A real party is one where you can let your hair down and drink like a fish without bothering, where there are only people who you know, and no press. As TV stars we can't walk in shabbily at a do, so one needs to get into the right outfit, don the right make up and dress the hair perfectly. There are people who say you get work opportunities at parties, but that has never happened with me. I had thrown a birthday bash two years back, but I don't intend to throw one this year.

Tina Parakh - People, these days want to be written about everything; from their marriage, to honeymoon, to their new houses, which was not the case a year ago. It's a subjective thing, at the end of it, and there is no harm in it. And one doesn't need to party to get work. I'm the biggest example of it. I'm more inclined towards private gatherings as I get lost in those typical TV parties, but I do go for Ekta Kapoor's bashes. I am more of a coffee-n-movie person.

Kituu' turns 200

Chaitanya Padukone

Friday, August 25, 2006 19:31 IST

Actor Ami Trivedi is excited about her show making a double century.

Actor Ami Trivedi is on cloud nine. Her show 'Kituu Sabb Jaanti Hai' (Sahara One), where she plays Katyayini Purohit (Kituu), has completed its run of 200 episodes. She says, "As they say in cricket, we are '200 not out' and I am the woman of the match. I never imagined that the show would be so appreciated."

She continues, "Initially, we were uncertain about whether the common man would connect with the role of a TV news anchor. But because my character was spunky and down-to-earth, I somewhere knew that audiences would identify with me." Ami underlines the show's USP saying, "In contrast to the saas bahu shows, this is an outdoor and realistic drama."

The storyline now has her in conflict with her boyfriend and colleague Rohan (Amit Verma) after he deserts her when she's falsely accused of having a liaison with her boss. Having put in her resignation Kituu is now working with a rival channel, headed by Malaika (Shveta Salve), while Rohan continues with her erstwhile channel.

"Kituu is an expert at crisis management. She is savvy in handling any emotional dilemma," laughs the theatre actor who started off as a child artiste in the 'Zee Horror Show'.

Ami feels that not all reporters are insensitive. "Kituu's heart too rules her head. In the riot sequences instead of interviewing the victims, she tries reaching them to the nearest hospital," claims Ami who apparently has performed all her stunts in the show. She says, "I enjoyed the mountain climbing and fire sequences."

Is there anything jo Kituu nahin jaanti? Ami takes a deep breath and says, "I am not aware of kal kya hoga and also who will be the man of my match!"

Vignaharta on his way!

Once again it's that auspicious time of the year when the welcome of Lord Ganesha will be celebrated with devotion and gaiety. It's a ten-day festival which is synonymous with modaks, pujas and the popular slogan, 'Ganpati Bappa Morya'.

And with people gearing up for this propitious occasion, our television stars are not left behind. They too join the fervor; some get involved in the Ganesha sthapana at their home, some visit cultural events and some wait to gorge the yummy prasad!

Kavita Shyam spoke to some of the Maharashtrian mulgis of the telly land about what Ganesh Mahotsava means to them and what their plans are this season.

Interesting note: A majority of them will be heading for Pune!

Niyati Joshi-
I will be going to my hometown Pune for a week where my family plans to get home Lord Ganpati. My mom prepares amazing modak and puran polis for us every year and many guests come to my place for lunch. We then attend the aarti at my friend's house in the building. I remember, when in school, my friends and I would walk down half of Pune to watch various Ganpatis and cultural programmes. Ganesh Utsav is an opportunity to catch up with all our friends and relatives and the air is filled with celebration and happiness.

Snigdha Akolkar-

This year I am busy shooting, however I will definitely go to Pune for about four days for Ganpati. Every year I visit this famous place called Dagdu Shete Halwai in Pune and perform a yagna there. Also, for ten days we'd bring Ganesha in our Pune house which is a replica of Dagdu Shete Halwai's ganpati idol (I carry a small replica of the same with me always). We eat satvik food during this period and modak is prepared at home. We also wear silk attires on the first day for the yagna. While in school days in Akola, where I used to stay with my aunt, I would hop onto my uncle's scooter and go to the market to buy Ganpati. I miss the days when we'd get the idol home and sing 'Ganpati Bappa Morya' on the way.

Sai Deodhar-
I am really excited and nervous as it's the first time that I am getting Ganpati home after my marriage. All these years it used to be at my mother's place and Shakti hasn't grown up watching all this so it'll be new for him too. I've been shopping at Vile Parle (East) since ages for Ganpati and they still treat me as a youngster in spite of having become an actor. I begin my aarti and bhajans one week before the festival and decorate the asan, mukut and the ornaments with different themes and colors. This year it is a tri-colour theme; orange, red and golden. I'll get the Ganpati home tonight for one and half days. I had to fight with my production house to give me two days off from work and once I get the idol I will be at home for two days performing the puja and the works. Honestly this festival means more to me than Diwali.

Arzoo Govitrikar-

We don't get Ganpati home but I end up going to Pune to my grand mom's place. We visit Dagdu Shete Halwai and offer our prayers. Also, we visit our aunt who keeps Ganpati for three days and thus it becomes like a family affair for us. On the last day of the festival my pals and I go to watch the Ganpati pandals all over Pune, pig out on the amazing food and watch the visarjan of the idols.

Gautami Gadgil-
We have been getting Ganpati home for the past fifty years at my mom's house. It

has been a tradition which was initiated by my grandparents and has been carried forward by my parents, eventually I see my brother doing the same. It's an occasion which brings the entire family and cousins together, considering we all lead such a busy life. My mom takes special effort with the decorations, and I help her with the flower decorations for the idol, I am her right hand. But this year she is feeling handicapped as I am unable to help her, as I've recently delivered a baby girl, Sia. But my daughter will surely attend the festivities. Ram generally comes in the evenings for the puja at home. He also participates during the visarjan, but this year I am not sure if he'll be able to make it as he will get mobbed.

Sunny inspires Kituu
Chaitanya Padukone

Monday, August 28, 2006 19:50 IST

Producer Manish Goswami says that the legendary cricketer has been his guiding force.

A bunch of celebrities, including Subhash Ghai, attended the party hosted by producer Manish Goswami to celebrate the completion of 200 episodes of the show 'Kituu Sab Jaanti Hai' (Sahara One). But legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar's presence came as a surprise.

Goswami explains, "Sunil is a family friend. He has been a guiding force and an inspiration to us for the last 12 years." He continues, "Since the theme of our party was 'Kituu scores a double century', we felt that Sunny would be the perfect guest. The icing on the cake (literally) even had a cricket bat and ball on it as a symbol. Also, the first episode had the tomboyish Kituu (Ami Trivedi) playing cricket on the streets."

Had Sunil watched any of the 'Kituu…' episodes? After a brief pause, Sunny replies, "Honestly speaking, I have not been able to watch any of the new shows. I have been touring extensively. I did watch a few episodes of 'Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin' and also loved watching 'The Great Indian Laughter Challenge'." He adds, "Yes, but the show has received favourable reactions. It's considered refreshing."

While Sunil posed with Ami, the actor couldn't help saying, "His presence has made our '200 not-out' celebrations memorable."

ALL TIED UP: Ami Trivedi

It's rare to see producer Manish Goswami of Siddhant Cinevision (Kituu Sabb Jaanti Hai and Aisa Des Hai Mera) boogie on the dance floor. Only a spunky Dipsshika can, as she made the producer match steps with her. Goswani gave his jhatkas and matkas at the 200th episode completion party of the SaharaOne soap Kituu. With several of the telly and Bolly brigade at the bash including Subhash Ghai, we also spotted Sunil Gavaskar (he's always present at all of Goswami's bashes). Ami 'Kituu' Trivedi in her flowery gear looked as if she had just walked through a garden. It's blooming time for her, we assume.

Ganpati Bappa Morya...

When Mumbai is getting immersed in the fervour of Ganpati celebrations, we catch with up with a few TV stars and quiz them on how they plan to celebrate this Maharashtrian festival...

Most stars we spoke to said that although they would love to keep Ganpati bappa for all the ten days, time constraint forces them to have it just for a day-and-a-half. Sai Deodhar, who's mom keeps Ganpati for five days, says that she will install a big statue, as small ones don't impress her. Mansi Salvi on the other hand, believes that more then the size, it's the devotion that counts. Although Ganpati is supposed to be for the Marathi manus, more and more people from other castes, are also joining in the festival. Sheetal Thakkar's family has been keeping Ganpati for the past many years. Similarly Munisha Khatwani who so far has never kept Ganpati feels that this year, she just might install the idol at her place. Manasi Salvi felt that it was really nice that people of different communities were coming together as a result of this festival. Sai pointed out that how different castes, have incorporated their own cultural mores to this festival "Punjabi's chadao a chuni to the idol and even do the jagran as well. Shweta Salve who has not been able to keep Ganpati for the last few years said that forget Hindus there are many Muslim families who bring the idol to their homes and ask for mannat. Both Sai and Mansi follow all the rites and ritual ie nevidya associated with the festival. Sai knows all the mantras (Hanuman chalisa, Ram Raksha sutra) and shloks by heart. "My dad made me remember them as a child," she avers. Sheetal's house has a priest come in twice a day to do all the prayers. "Even if I don't know by heart, it does not mean that I have less love and regard for Vinayaka," she reasons.
Mansi fondly remembered her childhood when she and her cousins would love to take part in all the decorations and sweet making. "We would help to make the plant leaves on which the Prasad is kept. I would follow mummy when she would decorate the small mandir at our old house," she chuckles. Sai is really looking forward to Ganpati as this year, it would be her first Ganpati after marriage and she will leave no stone unturned to make her mandir look really beautiful. "We Deodhars are know for the splendour of our Ganpati over the years and people always talk about how differently we do every year," she states. Shweta Salve said that it was very sad that many people still do not know the origin behind this festival, they think it has been going around for centuries, but it was Lokmanya Tilak who stared the public celebration in 1884, as a mean of uniting the people. After the one-and-a-half-day period is over, the stars try to find time from their busy shooting schedules to go and visit the large number of Ganpati pandals that dot Mumbai city during this festival. Munisha says that she will surely go to see Lalbag ka raja, as he is supposed to be a very powerful deity and if you ask him anything with a true heart, he will definetly grant it to you. Shital too would visit the pandal next to her house, as its difficult to travel during these days. "Besides, after a two day break from work I cannot ask for more holidays," she grins. The growing commercialisation of all festivals including Ganpati did hurt the TV celebrities. Mansi, however, is of the firm opinbion that Ganpati will punish those people who extort money in his name. Shital said at least in recent years, mandals have stopped airing raunchy filmy song which had earlier become a norm "only devotion songs should be played." The recent incident of Ganpati drinking milk amused the stars, they blamed the media for focusing too much on such incidents and thereby giving credence to such superstitions. Says Mansi, "My Ganpati is powerful he does not need to drink milk to show that he is there, as some people are saying." Discussing the status of Ganpati among the Gods, Shweta said Vinayak is considered the most loving and easy to please God hence whenever there is any trouble he is invoked. Munisha pointed that don't we always say Shri Ganesh, before staring any new undertaking. Ganpati has also become an occasion for friends and family to meet, Mansi says that it's only during these days, that she actually gets a chance to meet some of her relatives. Sheetal seconded Mansi by saying that as everybody is so busy in their own life, festivals like Ganpati are God send for old friends to connect. "Last year my old school friend who I had not met for years; came over for darshan," she avers. Talking about immersing the idol Sai says "When we go for visarjan, I feel as if somebody from my family is going way." Shital also cries when its time to bide adieu to Ganesha. Pudcha varshi lavakar ya was the clarion call of all. How can we finish an article on Ganpati without a reference to modak, Ganaraya's favourite food. Sai just loves the sweet ball. "I can eat as many, as I can lay my hands on," she laughs while Shweta says that as a child she would wait for Ganpati just to eat modak.
