How to deal with boss

Shveta Salve

Shveta Salve, plays the head honcho of a TV channel in Kittu Sab Jaanti Hai, who spews venom at her staff and is literally a terror in the office. Would she take the same from an illtempered boss herself ? "Some people never change, hence it is pointless to retort or make them understand. I would quit the job since I believe in working in a friendly environment." And is she a difficult boss herself ? "I have my make-up man, hairdresser, driver working under me and I am quite friendly with them. I just can't throw my weight around. They are human beings after all and need to be treated with dignity," she says.

Amit Varma

Amit Verma, who is currently at the receiving end of Shveta Salve's vicious barbs in Kittu... will react in the same way as he does as his his character. "If I am wrong, I will apologise or else I will make a major issue of it and not take it lying low. Nobody should compromise on their selfrespect," feels
Amit.

Kittu loves Gujarati theatre

Ami Trivedi recharges herself with stage acting

Reena Thapar Kapoor

You've been inundated with offers from Gujarati theatre. So, what's stopping you from taking up these offers?

I was introduced to Gujarati theatre by my father who has been directing plays for years now. Like him, I want to brush up my acting abilities by doing theatre. But Kittu Sab Jaanti Hai on Sahara One keeps me busy round the clock.

Have you ever thought of doing films?

Films or television, acting is acting. I'm in this profession for the love of the art. I never planned my career. I was offered Kittu… and I associated with the character. If film offers come my way I'll be happy, but if they don't I'm not going to regret it.

How do you manage to keep in touch with your friends?

There isn't much time but I do make it a point to spend quality time with my friends. I have a huge friend circle and we do spend time. We catch up at least twice a month. My only regret is that I cannot spend time with my parents.

What is your dream role?

Undoubtedly, Rani Mukherjee's in Black. Given a chance I'm sure that I can pull it off with the same grace and conviction.

Amit Verma saves biker from near death
After Hours Correspondent

Monday, September 25, 2006 17:42 IST

Amit Verma who plays the sensitive Rohan Kapoor of 'Kittu Sab Janti Hain' (Sahara One) went on to play the role of a hero, for real this time!

Recently, Amit and his friend were returning from dinner on the Bandra highway and happened to chance upon a crowd on the road. Upon further inquiry, they discovered a biker nearly bleeding to death on the highway, totally inebriated and confused.

It took quite a while for Amit to convince the poor man that they were just helping him. First the man resisted and then the crowds were suspicious. Finally, Amit and his friend did manage to take the injured man to the nearest hospital. And, it was only after notifying his family and making sure that he was in their care, did Amit leave the hospital.

Amit himself is quite nonchalant about this whole incident. "Well, anyone would have done the same thing. I feel we should make road safety and awareness our top most priority if we want to progress further, basic civility is where it all starts! I appeal to all to be humane and not turn the other way when a fellow human being is lying in danger. That's why I've joined up with an NGO to help our fellow riders ride better," says Amit appealing for more awareness on road safety.

Bobby Darling shows midriff this Navratri!

But what about other TV actors? BT checks out their plans this dandiya

GITA HARI

What is Navratri without bringing out those gorgeously embroidered and mirrorwork ghagras and sexy, backless cholis from the closet. It is nine days of sheer fun and frolic for television folks. Inspite of their hectic schedules, they go hunting for designer lehenga-cholis, stock up jewellery sets and hunt for those comfy mojris so that they can dance away till midnight.
Aparna Tilak, Dr Shalini of Left Right Left, is taking a day off from shooting tomorrow to be present at a Durga puja event where she is invited as a guest. A Bengali, she makes it a point to attend the puja every year. "It's like going to my maike. If I get a chance, I might go to Napeansea Road where I have some Gujarati friends who have organised raas garba for which I have selected a bright red and white mirror worked lehenga choli, a pair of mojris with glass and beads and a lovely gold set in filigree work," she says.
Says Bobby Darling, "I am going to be in Indore for a big dandiya show for which I have upped my wardrobe with a red lehenga, a short backless choli to show off my midriff as I have lost a lot of weight. I recently had my ears pierced and I plan to dangle huge jhumkas, have a new long black wig and my footwear will be mojris."
Ketaki and Rasik Dave are huge garba enthusiasts and so they don themselves in Gujarati ablavado (mirror sequined dresses). As Rasik puts it, "at least once we must go and 'matha tekke aana chahiye' (pay obeisance to the Goddess) so we already went to Falguni Pathak's event at Goregoan."
Zoom TV host Siddharth Kannan reveals his inimitable and humorous side when he says, "My college friends have insisted that I join them for dandiya on Saturday. This despite my making excuses of not having a proper outfit for the occasion, they promised to get me one. So as a return gift, I will take bandages and medical aid to treat them after playing what will be more of a war attack from my side." Sid has been having sleepless nights because he has never played dandiya before and is a tad nervous to dance in front of everyone.
Shefali Jariwala, the Kanta Lagaa girl has added five new eye-catching
lehenga cholis
to her wardrobe accessorised with oxidised silver or gold trinkets, as she is busy rocking cities of Gujarat like Ahmedabad, Rajkot and Surat but the icing on the cake is when she will visit Kolkata's Durga Puja on
Dusshera day. There she will add a little Bong touch to her make-up. "I do get to shake a leg with winners of the evening which I enjoy the most. But my fans want me to do garba on Kanta Lagaa number," which of course she obliges.
Ami Trivedi aka Kittu will put in an appearance as a celeb guest in Kandivili or Malad and being a Gujju herself, she looks forward to when she can wear ghagracholis and is "looking forward to it". As for the dandiya mandals going commercial, she says, "Traditional Gujarati songs are always played in the beginning and as the evening wears on, film and disco songs take over. I enjoy both."

Where's the dandiya tonight?

Nach Baliye contestants, Rasik and Ketki Dave celebrate Navratri in the traditional manner. Rasik fasts for all the nine days. Wife Ketki praises her husband's devotion to Mata, "during these days, he eats only a particular kind of rice and salt. He abstains from non veg, even ginger and onion are a strict no no. As for me, I cannot fast, I am just not made that way," she says. But Rasik points out although she does not fast, she assiduously prepares for the pooja which is very good for she is originally a Maharashtrian, where navratri is not celebrated with much fanfare. For Manasi Parekh it is a time to celebrate the power of Ma Durga. Rasik adds that each of nine days signifies some event related to Mata, the most potent symbol being the 10 th day i.e. the slaying of the demon Ravana, which is celebrated as Dassera. All stars we spoke to said that the best part of navratri was indeed the nine day function of garba and dandiya. Rasik said traditionally the idol of Durga is brought home for the nine day period where all the time the diya (ghee or mitti ke tel, depending on your financial status) has to be kept burning before the deity. In the evenings, after breaking the fast, people dance around the idol, that is the idea of garba or dandiya. While the former refers to clapping and dancing, the latter is dancing with beautiful sticks. Monaz and Mansi say its real fun to see youngsters come out in large numbers to dance away till the wee hours of the morning (unfortunately not in Mumbai). Mansi who will be mostly shooting said all her friends are buying the latest designer chaniya cholis and the best part is that they will never repeat an outfit even if they are not visiting the same pandals. Monaz said that for youngsters, garba has become a real fashion statement, where you really experiment with your cholis, the wilder the better.

Pooja Rawal Ghai recalls how during her college days she would visit the dandiya venues and have fun with the guys. "Nowadays we hardly get the time," she sighs. Ami Trivedi pointed out that these days special garba classes are held to train people to dance the right way.

While enjoying the song and dance, the stars did feel that commercialization is killing the true feeling of the festival. Rasik remembered his childhood days when they would celebrate navratri with family and that time there would only be devotional songs, only in the last twenty years, disco dandiya taken over.

Ami too felt that high prices of tickets deters many middle class families from enjoying navratri, but Pooja said that luckily, many societies have their own garbas, so its not that bad. Ami also wished that the police authorities relaxed the timing, so people can enjoy themselves. "The 11 pm deadline is too early given that most Mumbaikars get home only by 8," she groused adding that it's tougher for stars, as they get free only by 10. The stars accepted the fact that these nine days also allow them the luxury of enjoying as well earning money by making appearances at dandiyas, not only in India, but even overseas. Pooja, Monaz and Ami affirmed that have received many invitees and will soon decide where to go. Earlier filmstars would grace such events, but of late thanks to profusion of Saas bahu shows, TV stars are much in demand. One actor who did not want to be named said that it was sad that mostly only those actors who do positive roles get invited.

Asked as to how much time do they spend at such garbas, Pooja said an hour to hour-and-a-half and if the security is good then they even dance with the crowd.

In step with Shweta Salve

The actress is balancing her time between serials and dance rehearsals

Subhash K Jha

Shweta Salve could not have been busier at this point of her career. She is balancing her time with two soaps on air right now and her innumerable dance rehearsals. "I have been working very hard for the last two months. My producers, Tony-Deeya Singh and Manish Goswami, of Left Right Left and Kittu Sab Janti Hai have been very co-operative. Without their co-operation, I do not think I would have been able to balance my schedules."

She pauses. "Jitna milta hai ussmein khush rehne ki adaadat hai. Everything I'm today, I owe it to television. I'm a horrible planner. I never planned to be on television. Today I'm here tomorrow, who knows?"

While on television, Shweta's dancing skill has come to the forefront with Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. "Obviously people couldn't have known about my dancing skills because one doesn't get an opportunity to dance in soaps. I'm not saying I'm a trained dancer. But I do sway to occasional tunes. But this dance show has given me a great break to show my dancing skills," Shweta says.

Elaborating on her dancing prowess, Shweta says, "Dancing is like cooking or dressing up. You either know how to do it or you don't. I'm also able to hit the right notes in singing. My mom calls me Jack of all trades. But acting is one skill which brings out all my smaller skills."

Why has she not turned to Bollywood so far? "I don't know anyone in the film industry," she says. "If I get an opportunity, then I will act in films. I'm the only person from my family to enter the entertainment industry. I'm just hoping that someone from the film industry sees me dancing and signs me for a film. I'd rather do my work and wait for it to pay off. I'm a great believer in destiny," she says.

It's not cricket

Amit Varma & Yash Sinha

The production members of Kituu Sabb Jaantii Hai witnessed a showdown between actors Amit Varma and Yash Sinha. When contacted, Amit admitted, "Well, we were sitting in our make-up room and discussing the World Cup and the various strategies undertaken by our cricketers. It was at this point that Yash and I had a difference of opinion. We were aggressively defending each other's stand. And when we were called for the shooting, Yash seemed to have carried it in his mind and we fought on the sets again." Yash says, "We are good friends. But we went a little overboard with our discussion that day. We should have respected each other's opinion and not have hurt each other."
