'Did you hear the news?' Saahil asked Arjun, 'what news' 'about the new employee that will be joining us from tomorrow' 'oh is it, our team?' 'yep, apparently she is very good I heard' 'oh good' 'She is reffered by Vaani Madam from Accounts' 'that is nice' 'what is up' another collegue who had just walked in asked , saahil replied to him 'there is a new employee that will be joining us' 'oh I heard that too yesterday , some Arohi , right'. Arjun who was not that much into the news stopped what he was doing, a sweet wave of memory had hit him. Arohi that was one name he could never forget, Arohi a sweet memory, Arohi who had brightned his otherwise dull evenings. How the name still brought a smile and a prick of sweet pain in his heart. Is it a coincidence that he will be working with a girl named Arohi, is it the same Arohi?. It can't be. As far as he knows she went abroad after getting married. That is the last time he had heard about her. Then he too had moved to Delhi after changing jobs. Though he thought it cannot be the same arohi, he grew restless, It had been a while someone said that name in front of him. What if it is the same Arohi, he thought for once and then smiled, then he would be very happy to see her. suddenly he wanted it to be her so that he can see how she has changed over the 2 years. again he did not want it to be her.
Once he reached home he threw himself on the couch. Loosening up his shirt he glanced around at His lonely life. It was his choice to be alone. It gave him the freedom to do whatever he wants, sans the loneliness. The name Arohi kept ringing. All evening he went around his chores thinking about her. He still remembered her like it was yesterday, The first time he had seen her in a fight she was having with an auto driver. He had just moved into his uncle's house in Poona been busy with the new office. His uncle and aunt had a room downstairs and a room upstairs, he had to be upstairs. That day he was watching around from the balcony and witnessed the sight. He first heard the voices , a female commanding and demanding voice and then in the end a feeble sorry from the auto driver. Apparantely he was driving rashly that made the kids playing around run in fear and one kid fell hurting the knee badly. Fortunately for arohi and unfortunately for the driver he stopped the auto at the next house to drop the customer off, and a storm named arohi had hit him, She made the street a courtroom so much that maybe that fellow would never drive an auto again. As the slow moving auto left he saw her face. It was all worked up, hair tied into a bun she was walking like she still had to trash someone. 'thank u arohi didi' the kid told her, arohi! what a beautiful name, like music He saw her scolding the kids for not being careful while playing in the streets. She summoned another kid into her house to get the first aid kit. Once the kids' went to play, he saw her walking towards an old man. He saw her stop take the heavy bag he was carrying 'why uncle you could have asked me to bring, why are u carrying heavy bags' she was still talking all the while walking the old man to his house. Arjun had a big smile seeing all this. From that day it had become a habit for him to sit out in the balcony at evenings and witness all that happened around in that colony. He got to see her everyday, he saw her in various moods, various attires, she was attractive in many ways, the charged up face, the never ending talking, the fights with vendors on streets, with people who broke rules, the 'I am the owner of this colony' attitude. She had a reason to think that , all the people in that colony loved her, especially elders and kids, she helped them out with various stuff , played with them when she had time, she fought for the kids if they were bullied, she would make sure they resolve the fight, if any vendor tried to deceive anyone by hiked prices or cheated with less produce she would make them accept it and make them give something extra for less. She also appeared to be impulsive, always active , always busy, busy in her own world. He was sure she would not have noticed him at all. Why will she? he was up and out at day break and would settle in the balcony after coming back, when was the time she could have possibly seen him.
He wanted to enquire about her more her personal details , but whom should he ask, his uncle and aunt were not that friendly type of people , and they were hardly home, he had seen Arohi occasionally greet them but could see there was not much acquaintance. Her personality had made him like her, he even had dreams of her and even day dreamed few times as to how it would be if she entered his dull life, it would be full of life with her bindaas attitude. The thoughts just remained in his mind, he could not put them out. After six months he went for a two week vacation to mumbai. His friend saahil noticed a change and enquired until arjun spilled the beans , that he liked a certain someone in poona. Saahil wanted to know more details, 'atleast naam toh bataa' for which he got arjun's usual smile and shrug. When he came back he felt as if the street was lacking something, kids were playing but were not as loud or playful. He glanced at arohi's house that had some decorations . Just as was he getting into his uncle's house he saw the old man coming with a bag full of groceries. He remembered arohi helping him. He thought he might see her now as she will definitely come to help the uncle, when he saw that no such thing happened he went and picked up the bag , 'it is okay uncle give it here I can carry it for you' 'no no it is okay I can take it, why do u take trouble ..' 'oh this much I can do, I am arjun by the way' 'nice to know, I think I saw you few times going in the morning' 'ji'. Some kids were just sitting by the side of the road and talking. The old man asked 'why kids, arent you doing any masti today' just then a biker sped past them almost jolting the old man. Before arjun could react the bike was off the street. He checked if the uncle was okay. The olderly person told one of the kids' 'your arohi didi too would have yelled after that person' 'grandpa, why did arohi didi have to go' the young boy asked sadly, 'beta she got married, how can she still stay here, now come on you cannot sulk for long , get up and get to play' she got married was the only thing arjun could hear. It was like a dagger had pierced him and pushed him in a dark hole. Without him asking the oldman just continued about arohi since he found arjun to talk to. He came to know there was an befitting alliance that had come for her. The boy's side wanted jhat mangni phat byah. A very good guy from decent well to do family, who will let go of such alliance and she was married off in two weeks as the groom had to get back to his work abroad. He was heartbroken right there in the middle of the street. The pain that now occurs as a sweet pain of memory originated at that very moment but it was not sweet, it was very painful.
Next few days were hell for him. He should have told her earlier. But how could he have told her? There was no chance she would agree to marry him. She was just a dream for him, he could have never had her. He was angry. Angry at himself, at his foolishness of not telling her, at his badluck for not being able to tell her. He was angry at his inability to tell her. For the first time in his life he was angry at his broken limb, that had given him the limp for life. After a month he could not stay there anymore. He moved. that was almost 2 years ago.
