A big thank you again for every single one of you who's read and commented on this. It really means alot.
Part 4 :
Tears roll down Arjun's face as he reads the manual the doctor had given him for the nth time that week.
"It could sometimes be hereditary; you should get yourself screened as well. You can never be too careful with cancer", the doctor had said just before he left. That made Arjun feels empty. "No, it cannot be hereditary because I am not his son"- he wanted to scream, but he just nodded.
Hepatocellular Carcinoma, chemotherapy, tumour suppressors, screening, metastasis, radiotherapy, were a few of the words that now inhabited Arjun's mind most hours of the day. Words he had never come across before, words that he didn't know existed before were now vigorously consuming him. His dad had cancer of the liver. Years of alcohol and cigarettes consumption had eventually taken their toll.
Arjun was angry. At his family for not having stopped his dad from drinking too much alcohol, at his dad for not having done routine check-ups, at God for making all this happen, most of all he was angry at himself. Had he not left, may be his dad wouldn't have drank so much alcohol in the past two years, may be his cancer wouldn't have progressed this fast, may be it wouldn't have spread to the lungs, maybe he would have lived.
"It's not just cause of the two years Arjun , it's because he's been drinking all his life. You are not responsible for this." – Arohi says.
"Arohi , he is my father" , he struggled to continue, " No matter how he is or what he's done, he is my father and I love him. Don't you love your dad "
" I am not saying you shouldn't look after him, all Im saying is that don't feel guilty, you are not responsible for this. You haven't gone to work for a week. We can't afford you to lose your job Arjun. You know we can't…. Look at you, you haven't eaten, I know you haven't slept, you've been smoking again. You promised me you wouldn't smoke again. It's not good for you .You know that "
"Oh for God's sake Arohi. Can't you think of anything but yourself? "- Arjun snapped.
"Myself? How is me worrying about your heath, your food, your lungs thinking about me. I am thinking about you dammit", - she said. Her voice begins to crack and tears start falling off her face as she left the room.
This went on the same way for a few weeks. Arjun called work and took the 25 days paid holiday he was entitled to. The days they had planned to go on a holiday together, the holiday Arohi was saving up so hard for. It made her sad but she understood. She understood but she couldn't make Arjun understand that she understood. Every time she would try talk to him to calm down and have faith and pray, he would snap and say "just because it's not your dad". It was only about time they stopped having the conversation all together.
As his relationship with his wife was deteriorating, his relationship with his father blossomed. Rudra could afford a personal carer at home, so wasn't admitted to the hospital. They played golf together, they watched cricket, they talked business, politics, everything.
"You know son, cancer is the best thing that's happened to me in the past few years, because it brought you back to me", - Rudra said with a softness in his eyes that Arjun recognised, it was the same look he had when he first brought Arjun home.
"Doctor said you are responding to the medication" – Arjun said squeezing his dad's hand slightly, not being able to look Rudra in the eyes, knowing that if he did, he might end up crying. And that was something they had agreed on never doing in front of each other.
"This is just like the old days isn't it dad", Arjun said, reminiscing all the moments he had spent with his dad. Rudra replied with a weak smile, "Yes, just like the old days. Before anything bad started happening to us. Before Arohi"
Had he said the same thing 3 weeks ago, Arjun would have walked away. But it's different when your dad has cancer. It feels impossible to say no or to contradict with anything he says. He felt like he had betrayed his wife. By not standing up for her, for not saying 'No dad, she is the best thing that has happened. And I am going to leave if you are going to say that about my wife' . How he wanted to say that, but he couldn't. He just couldn't..
"Arjun, can I ask you a favour
" Yes dad, don't say favour, I can do anything for you"
"Will you come with me to London, your uncle said there are lots more treatment options there. He knows a really good Oncologist"
"But dad …", he interrupted. Yes, he could do anything for his father but going to London god knows for how long. He already used up all this holidays; he couldn't just skip work for long. He would have to resign. Investment Banking was the most desirable job in the market. He knew his bank wouldn't hold his place, they would find another him in a few days. And Arohi, how could he leave Arohi and go for so long. May be she could come along. He ruled that option out straightaway, knowing his dad would never agree to that.
"It's ok, if you are too busy", Rudra quickly added.
"No, it's ok. I'll come. Right now there's nothing more important to me than your health, when are we leaving?"
On the way back home, he felt nervous. He had promised his dad he would go to London without even consulting her. 'She would do the same thing, if it was her father', he thought. He knew he was only saying that to make him feel better, she would never do such a thing without at least consulting him. "No, I love you more Arjun, it's so obvious"; she always used to say. May be it was true. May be she did love him more than he loved her. It was a difficult thing realising that. It is true that love is hard to quantify, but it is things like these. May be she won't mind, he thought. 'Absence makes the heart grow fonder', isn't that what Shakespeare had said. May be some distance is exactly what they needed. He gathered his courage, he had to say it to her, he had to do this.
He rang the doorbell and almost immediately Arohi opened the door. She had the face on which meant 'I know something you don't'. He knew she was about to tell him something.
"Arohi, I need to tell you something"- he proceeded
"Me first", she said
"Mine's really important..ok nevermind, you go first''- he didn't have enough strength to fight on.
''I'm pregnant"- she exclaimed, as she put her arms around him. "You are gonna be a father Arjun"
