Meher pushed past people, ignoring yells of congratulations emitting for the guests. She could feel her eyes smarting but refused to let them drop. Her legs like lead, each step took her breath away, or what little was left of it from the sight that kept replaying in front of her eyes.
Pushing the door open, the cold air was welcomed by her parched lungs as she took in deep breaths. She could feel the wet grass between her toes as she ran through the garden, wanting so desperately to get away from it all, from everyone, from life.
She paused in front of a bench, tired, not just from running but from reassuring herself everything was alright. For weeks she had pushed aside thoughts and now it seemed like reality had won.
In a trance like state, Meher lifted her hand to her eyes, feeling the moistness on her fingers. Scared to believe her senses, she stared at the single tear resting on her finger and sobs escaped her mouth, racking her body.
He smiled cheekily as he leant his body against hers, blocking her by the wall. His lips, eyes of their own inches away from hers. The feel of his breath so close to her was driving her insane. Popping her eyes open, she yelled, distracting him and turned to run out of the room, laughing as she could hear him cursing and yelling after her.
The mendhi on her hands stared back at her as she remembered.
Just hours ago, he had his arms snaked around her waist, both of them moving tunelessly to music in their own world as he gently wiped his tears and adjusted her hair around her face, silently letting her know how much he loved her and how sorry he was. His smile had made her want to do nothing but never let go.
Her breathing became heavier as other memories flooded her mind.
Preet smiled down at Ashlesha who threw her arms around his neck, nestling into his arms. She watched as Preet's arms came around hers and a surge of anger rippled through her body. Ashlesha smiled, her eyes closed, content with her position. She couldn't see Preet's face but her insides lurched at the thought of the smile on his face.
Her eyes scrunched, burning from the memory.
She watched on as again, Preet enveloped Ashlesha into his arms and she could barely hear Ashlesha's next words over the pounding in her ears. "I love you Preet." The ceiling, the walls seemed to close down on her as she came to the realization that she was losing her husband, her love, not just to anyone but to a sister. She watched, numb to the bone as Preet's arms engulfed Ashelsha.
Meher cried openly, her arms held up, her head thrown back, as if questioning the heavens. What had she ever done to deserve this? Why was she subjected to losing the one thing of value she held in her life?
Lightning thundered and the heavens responded noisily as rain poured down, instantly soaking Meher. It poured with such an intensity, it surged Meher. It was as if the heavens were crying all the tears for her. She stared at her mendhi covered hands, a sign of her marriage, another sign that it was breaking as she let her hands unfold, letting the mendhi wash away.
Breathing heavily, Meher turned and stopped dead in her tracks.
Soaked to the bone, Preet stared back at her, his eyebrows narrowed, his fists clenched.
Seeing him, Meher felt both love and anger flare up in her stomach, both as different as fire and ice. The sight of his face made her want to hug him but throw up at the same time. Never before had she seen such anger, yet such concern on his face. Her heart softened.
She stepped forward, not blinking, and walked towards him, her steps almost dragging their way towards him. He watched on as she neared.
Inches apart, Meher stared into his eyes and deep down, behind the dark brown eyes, she saw nothing but sincerity.
Without even thinking about it, she could feel her arms raising and she flung herself into his arms wanting him to be that safe harbour. His arms automatically found their place around her waist and she shuddered in happiness.
A smell wafted near and up her nose.
She froze in his arms.
Months ago, she had bought Ashlesha that very perfume.
Meher felt his arms tighten around her but she stood there, frozen, unable to believe that the moment trust had been established, it had to be taken away.
Another whiff of it powered Meher like nothing had done before.
Stepping back, she forced Preet's arms off of her and mustering all she had in her, she slapped him clear across the face.
Her arms stung his face, but not as much it stung Preet to look at Meher's face, so full of disbelief, hatred and sorrow.
She opened her mouth, her voice dripping with loving hate.
"I can't do this Preet."
Looking into his face one last time, Meher turned and ran out of the front gate, tears streaming down her face.
Preet's eyes did not follow her as she left but his heart she took with him forever. Staring at the place she had been standing mere seconds ago a numbness spread over Preet.
A hand gently squeezed Preet's shoulder. Wide-eyed he turned to see his brother, his friend Rajveer standing there, a look of genuine concern glinting over his face.
"Preet? Tum yahan kya kare ho? Meher aandar hogi naa?"
His words reached Preet's ears in gaps, and only one word meant anything to him. Meher.
Rajveer grabbed him roughly by the shoulders and shook him.
"Suno Preet, I have to tell you something important."
Rajveer roughly forced Preet to look at him in the eye.
"Ashlesha loves you Preet."
The words reached Preet's ears but the meaning did not. he stared at Rajveer as if seeing him for the first time and stared at him glossy-eyed as Rajveer rambled on voice cracking with pain.
"She never loved me Preet, it was always you. But Preet I know Ashlesha. She will go to any extent to get what she wants. And she wants you Preet."
His ears were thundering, his heart was pounding and Preet could slowly feel the words piecing themselves together to make sense. Rajveer stared at him, unsure of what to do as words escaped Preet's mouth.
"Meher....she.....schemed.....left.....love..her..."
His knees gave away and Preet fell forewards. Rajveer's yell for Prem and the rest of the family fell deaf on his ears as he could only hear Meher's voice ringing in his ears.
"I can't do this Preet."
His fist closed around bits of grass, his fingers digging deep into the ground as he realized that Meher was gone. Oblivious to his surrounding family, laying on the grass Preet sobbed because not only had he given Meher his heart to take with her, she had taken with her a broken one.
Sobs shook his body as he kept repeating his love for her in his heart, hopeful that she would hear him.Through a film of tears he looked up towards the front gate, still on the ground.
No one came.

Ta-dah! (BD - you are so right, it's fun saying that!) That's the end of my second fanfic. This part I think had its shining moments but it was also very dull I think. Not enough impact in the end. *shrugs* Whatever. It's done!
If anyone is interested, this part was revolved around the scenes (or at least the begining) in the VM that Radzie di made for me way back when.
