PART 12-B
STILL PREM'S P.O.V:
As I stared at her, I noticed that she was the first girl I had seen who managed to look beautiful with out any make-up on. Her dark eyelashes, her rose colored cheeks, her twinkling brown eyes, the light cream-colored skin, and her slender figure were all just''''PERFECT.
I noticed her fiddling with the dupatta and I knew that staring at her was making her feel uncomfortable. I stopped myself'..and God knows how, looked away.
"Ready'" I said while I put the glass into the sink.
"Yes'" She whispered slightly.
I locked the house and we headed to Arjun's house for dinner. The car ride was silent but I don't know why'.I just wanted to take a good, long look at her. But may be this was not the right time. She was looking so cute today. The only thing flashing through my mind was her image. Her delicate figure roped into that dark saffron and chocolate colored salwar. Her long black hair that was open''just the way I liked it with her hair parted from the right. I could see the pinch of sindoor she still had on. The only jewelry she wore was a matching reddish colored bracelet, matching cute earrings, and the diamond gem mangalsutra. Her eyes were outlined with a light touch from her eyeliner. She was looking beyond beautiful.
Even though I wasn't looking at her, her first sight was still fresh in my mind. Prem''you're going mad! As I stopped at the traffic light, I turned my sight to look at her. How can anyone be so beautiful? I have never seen a girl that looked this attractive.
She was looking out the window and a slight smile was on her face. I saw her about to turn and look at me and I instantly shot my gaze back on the road, hoping that she didn't catch me. The silent ride continued and after about 5 minutes, we reached Arjun's house. I knew that there would only be Arjun and Maya home because Arjun's mom was still in Delhi and Maya was an orphan. May be that's why I have always been over protective of her. I know how hard life can get and since I met her in college, during her sophomore year and my junior year, I felt as if she was very close to me. I always treated her like my little pet'..and when I found out 2 years ago that she was getting married'..I guess I totally freaked out. I remember the day when I stormed into her house, questioning who the heck the person was. Man was I wrong'..but my trust in her increased when I found out that she was in love with Arjun'.Arjun, my best friend from childhood. They both suited each other like peanut better with jelly. I couldn't have been happier after finding this out.
I parked my car in front of his house. It was as big as mine and had a beautiful texture to it. I turned the car off and looked over at Heer. She looked at me at the same time and smiled.
"Let's go" I said politely. She nodded and we both got out. It wasn't that dark outside even though it was 9:15 at night. I guess it's just a summer thing. We both walked together to the porch and I rang the bell. I could hear someone from inside running to open the door.
The door jerked open and there stood Maya'..looking as cute as ever. Her smile was as wide as it could get. She was looking adorable in that light blue colored t-shirt and blue jeans, her hair open, and barely any make-up on.
She flung her hands around me and hugged me. I hugged her back tightly as a smile appeared on my face. As she parted from the embrace, she took a good look at me.
"What's up bhaiya'.You finally got the time to meet me''I missed you so much" she said in her cute little way. I smiled at her. But then I saw her eyes move to Heer. I looked at Heer. She was giving Maya her drop- dead smile. God'..stop it Prem'..or she will notice you drooling over her smile. Maya smiled back at her and then looked at me.
"And would you be kind enough to introduce me to this beautiful girl'." she ordered me.
Coming out from my stance, I looked at Maya and smiled.
"Oh'.sorry'.this is Heer" I told her. Her eyes widened and she looked back at Heer.
"You have a beautiful name'.hi'..I am Maya" she said as she flung her arms around her to give her a hug. I was a little surprised as Heer just smiled and gave her a bear hug. As she pulled off, she took her hand and dragged her inside. I just followed inside looking for Arjun. Maya and Heer sat on the sofa and started a conversation while I looked for Arjun.
"Where's Arjun'.?" I asked.
"Oh'.he's in the kitchen'.cooking dinner'" she told me okay.
I started to walk towards the kitchen when the fact hit me.
"He's WHAT'?" I turned as I asked Maya. She chuckled.
"Your best-friend lost the bet with me so now he has to cook dinner'." She said.
"Are you planning on getting us all to starve'that guy doesn't even know how to make coffee'." I told her.
"But he lost the bet'.and he wouldn't admit that girls are better then guys'." She smirked at me.
"Oh hello'.boys are the BEST'." I told her. I looked at Heer who was enjoying our little argument. I loved it when she smiled.
"If you guys are the best'.then lets see you and your friend make dinner for us'" she said grinning at me. She turned to Heer, grabbed her hand, came to me and grabbed my hand, and dragged us both to the kitchen.
As we saw the sight in the kitchen, the three of us couldn't control out laughter and we just cracked up. There was Arjun, all covered in flour and vegetable leaves, trying to cut up some carrots. He turned around looking all angry. His black t-shirt was ruined and his jeans were a shade of white, red and deep blue. His face and hands were white. God knows what he was trying to make. He gave me and Maya an angry glare and we both tried to control our laughter but were unsuccessful. We went out the kitchen to catch our breaths. After I caught my breath, my eyes searched for my FAVORITE person. But she wasn't here. I went back towards the kitchen. She still there looking at Arjun.
"Do you want help'?" she softly asked him. Hearing her voice, Arjun turned and looked at her. He felt a little embarrassed of presenting himself like this. But he managed to smiled at her.
"I can sure use a helping hand'" he said with a smile. I saw Heer walk towards Arjun and help him cut up some vegetables. I tried my best to hide my smile but I couldn't. This girl was super perfect. Why does she have to be so nice, so innocent, and so lovable? Little by little, she was taking over me. But was this just the pretense? Was she doing this because she HAD to act like my wife? My smile turned into a frown because I didn't know why she was doing all this.
I felt a gentle hand on my shoulder. As I turned around, I saw Maya looking at me with a naughty expression.
"I like her'." She softly whispered. "She's perfect for you man'.I think good sent this angel as a reward for all the good things you have done..." She continues as she laid her head on my shoulder. We both look at her. Yes'..she truly was an angel. We both quietly watched Arjun and Heer make something suitable to eat. "How's Preet doing'.?" She asked looking at me with a sad expression." I gave her back a smile.
"He's fine'..Today was his operation'.They have him under observation for the night and I have to go tomorrow to visit him. I hope the operation was successful and he recovers soon''"
"It will be''..but'but how did you get that huge amount of money when we all weren't able to get the amount'?" she asked me with confusion visible in her eyes. Now what do I say to her. That I kidnapped Heer and blackmailed her family for money and then she ended up marrying me because she wanted to help me. I was about to tell her the actual truth of how she helped me'.was I was cut of.
"Prem',"said Heer softly looking at me. "Would you mind helping your friend'?" she said raising her eyebrow. I gave her a nod and she went back to helping Arjun stir something in the pan. Thank God, she saved me from telling Maya everything.
I could clearly see the brother-sister type relationship building between them. After watching them for a few minutes, we both decided to help out. Together, all four of us made dinner which consisted of rice, dal, bhindi ki sabzi, aalu ki sabzi, and chapatis.
After about half an hour, we finished our dinner and went into the living room to watch a movie.
"I'm laying on the couch'.." called out Arjun.
"Heck no'.I'm laying on it'." said Maya. As Arjun laid down on it, Maya jumped on top of him and sat on his stomach.
"Did anyone tell you how heavy you can be'.." he said groaning. But I knew he was just teasing her. "Tell her to get off dude'" he told me.
"Give him a break'.he at least tried to made dinner'.even though it was a disaster'." I smirked at him.
"Fine'.lets just share'."she said. "We both sit here and you two sit on the other couch'." She told me.
I looked at Heer who seemed a little uncomfortable but instantly changed her expression when I gave her an assuring smile.
We all got settled. Maya and Arjun were on the right side couch while Heer and I were on the left side couch. As we got settled, we debated on what to watch. As Arjun and Maya bickered, I tried to control the different emotions running through me. The couch we were sitting on was quiet small, so our bodies were touching. But I liked this closeness'..it felt so natural, so pure.
"I want to watch TWILIGHT'.." wined Maya.
"You already watched it six times'..today I pick." He ordered.
"Hey'.why don't we let Heer pick'."said Maya looking over to Heer. Heer looked at her and then at me.
"Yeah'.what do you want to watch'" asked Arjun politely with a smile.
I looked at Heer who was asking me what to do with her eyes. I smiled at her and waited for her to pick.
"But I don't really care'" she said politely.
"Oh come on Heer'.what's your favorite movie'" Arjun asked.
She looked at their faces and then at me. I raised my eye brows gesturing her to say and froze when she said'
"Titanic'."she softly said. Wow'.another similarity. I looked at Arjun and Maya's eyes gaze at me.
"Wow'.you two also like the same movie'.I wish we were like you two'.all we do is bicker over everything'" she said while they both laughed.
"Every time Prem comes over'.we only watch Titanic'"added Arjun with a smile.
"Oh..." she said and then looked at me.
Arjun turned the lights off, played the movie, and snuggled close to Maya. They were truly made for each other. When the movie started, all my attention went into it.
While we were watching, my thought drifted back to Heer. I looked at her from the corner of my eyes and I could feel her shivering. I looked at Arjun and Maya who were glued to the movie screen. I chose this time to slowly take my blazer off. Her eyes looked into mine and expressed the confusion. I smiled at her and slowly covered her with the blazer. She was about to object but I put my finger on her lips to shush her. She smiled back at me and then we diverted our attention back to the movie'..or at least she did. I didn't know about me because I could only think about HER. Her image kept flashing back into my mind. I was going crazy over her. But I CAN'T! She should mean nothing to me. She is just a girl who I have to stay with for 3 months. After that, she will lea-''.
I just can't digest the fact that she will not be here after that. In just 2 days, I have a habit of having her in front of my eyes. The question was'.WHY? Why was I felling all this? This can't just be an attraction can it? Was this getting to be more then just an attraction?
I prayed that this was just friendship and nothing else. I looked again at Heer. She was peacefully watching the movie. The slight smile on her lips was tempting me to touch them. I went back to looking at the TV screen. And after about one hour, the movie ended with a depressing end. It was sad but we all were still wide awake.
When Arjun turned the lights on, I noticed the annoyed look on his face. I knew exactly why he was annoyed. He looked at me with a pleading look and I got up to head towards Maya.
By now, she had used up over three WHOLE tissue boxes. I sat next to her and she continued sobbing in my arms. I couldn't help but smile at her. She was an emotional person and sad movie always made her cry. While I was trying to control this sensitive sister of mine, I saw Heer look at me with worried eyes. I gave her an assuring smile but she wasn't able to understand. I looked at Arjun and indicated towards her. He understood and went to Heer. Heer looked at Arjun with questioning eyes while Arjun just grinned. He stood next to her.
"Woh kya haina'..my wife-to-be is extra emotional'..she can't see anyone in pain" he said while grinning at her. Heer was relaxed to know that everything was fine. "You'll get used to her'.and it's sometimes a treat to watch her little tactics'.." He continued while looking at Maya. Maya gave him an eye and he instantly shut his mouth.
"I see a good husband in the making'." She told him sarcastically.
"I know'..but not as perfect as Prem over there'.." he said grinning at me.
What was that'..did I just see her blush? Yes it was'..and was the cutest blush I had ever seen.
After a second or two, Maya stopped her emotional breakdown and we decided to head towards home as it was almost 1:00 in the morning. Arjun and Maya dropped us towards the car. I expected to get a tight hug from both of them but they flew past me and headed towards''.HEER. Maya jumped on her and gave her a tight hug. I could already see that the two, by now, were best friends. Arjun also gave Heer a brotherly hug. Heer seemed to be fond of both of them.
"Did somebody forget me'"I said in a sarcastic tone. Maya and Arjun both jumped on me at the same time while Heer just laughed. After saying final goodbyes, we drove off to go home.
The car ride started off to be quiet. I knew she had a good time but I couldn't stop from asking.
"Were you bored'."I softly asked her.
She looked at me.
"Heck no'..I have never been this happy for a long time'"she said smiling at me. "I felt as if I had'..a family for once'"
I could hear the sadness in her voice. I looked around to divert her attention. I spotted a little ice cream shop which was still open.
"You want ice cream'."I asked her.
"Ice cream'..at 1 in the morning'.?"She asked.
"Yea'.what do you like'?"I said as I halted the car and looked at her.
"But'"She started to say but I cut her off.
"Please'I really want some'." I gave her my puppy face. And I knew she would give in.
"Fine'."she said.
"Ok'.wait here'I'll get it'..what do you want?" I asked her politely.
"Whatever you get'."she said. "Now will you hurry up'you do know that you have to go to work tomorrow." She added. I remembered that and I sprinted to get two Mango ice creams. I quickly came back, sat in the car, and handed her the ice cream. We quickly ate them and headed home. Thank god I saw the ice cream shop'.and I knew that today had been a great day for us'
I parked the car slowly in the lot and we both got out. As we were walking towards our house, I could see that she was very sleepy. When we got into the house, I told her to sleep in my room and I could sleep in Preet's room. She said no at first, but I somehow convinced her.
"Tum jao''I'll get a blanket for you'" I told her. She nodded her head and went into my room. I got a warm blanket from the cupboard in Preet's closet and went to my room.
When I got there, I saw the door being slightly open. I didn't know if it was right for me to enter but I still did. I slowly pushed the door and peeked inside. The sight of her made me almost stumble inside. There she was, peacefully sleeping sideways on the bed as if she fell on it and instantly fell asleep. She was still clutching onto my blazer.
I slowly walked closer to her trying my best not to wake her up. I kneeled down next to her. Her eyes were like lotus petals. She looked so innocent especially with that cute smile on her lips. I slowly tried to take my blazer of her. As I pulled it lightly, her grip on it became tighter. She did seem very cold. I smiled at her innocence. I took the pillow and put it under her head and then I covered her with the blanket. Before I could leave, I gently traced my fingers from her hair and then on her cheek. But after realizing what I was doing, I took my hands off her. No'..I can't do this'..I have to right over her'..I can't cross my limits'..!
After soaking in her reflection, I went off to bed in Preet's room. Tossing and turning was the only thing I had done that night'..sleep was FAR away from me. And this was all because of her.
