Part two : Too far yet too close

scene:1, saachi's room:

"Taai chaliye na. Sab log jaa rahe hai duwa maangne.."

Addu requested her.

"Mujhe kahi nahi jaana.." came Saachi's reply.

Nani, Aaji entered her room and were moved to see Saachi in such a mess. Her hair was untidy, her clothes thrown haphazardly across the room, her food untouched.

"Jaake aa na Puttar! Har saal tho jaati hai tu Peer Baba k dar par.."

Nani's voice was laced with concern.

"Kahi nahi Jaana hai mujhe.." Saachi's reply was much firm.

"Jaake aa na baraa.." Aaji came and sat beside her, touching her head lovingly.

Her touch untied days of anguish and pain she had been supressing that she broke into tears.

"I'm sorry. Aaji.. Main mujhe maaf kardo. Aaji, Naani aap k siva mere koi nahi hai. Aap mere sab kuch hai. Agar aap naraz rahenge mujhse tho.. main seh nahi sakti please. Mujhse bohot badi Galati hogai. mujhe maaf kardo.."

Aaji was at loss of words but Nani spoke for her.

"pyar karna koi guna nahi hai puttar. Par hume tho bataana chahiye tha tumhe.. iss tarah Ulka k muu se sunke bohot bura laga.. hum tho chahte hi the ki koi aisa tumhare zindgi mein aaye jo tujhe khush rakhein. Par DV? DV baccha hai puttar.. aur tu bhi bacchii ki tarah.." Naani spoke finally breaking her silence on the issue.

Ever since the news of DV-Sachi's relation reached them both Aaji, Nani started avoiding Sachi despite her efforts to apologise.

"Khair.. Ab jo hua usse badal nahi sakte. Tho usse bhool jaana hi thik hai..."

Dilz arrived just then; followed by Ulka kaku.

"Woh main Saachi ko dekhne aayi thi. Hum peer baba k yaha se aa rahe hai. Saachi tum gayi nahi?" Dilz asked.

"Nahi mera mann nahi hai Dilz. Mujhe akela chod do please." Saachi was quiet.

It was Aaji's turn to break the silence.

"Bara.. jo hua usse bhool jao. Aur Addu k saat darga jao. Sab thik hojayega..."

"Chalo shukar manao ki yeh sab char diwaron k beech hua. Agar kisi ne undono ko waise dekhte jaise maine.." Ulka's words stung like thorns.

Aaji cut her off swiftly.

"Bas karo Ulka. Hum Sachi ko sambhal sakte hai. Aur hume pura yakin hai ki humari bacchii aisi koi kaam nahi karegi jisse hume sharminda hona pade.."

Saachi wiped her tears and hugged Aaji.

"I'm sorry Aaji. Ab se main aapko bina bataaye, koi kaam nahi karungi. I promise. Ab waisa hi hoga jaise aap chahti hai..."

"Bas bas puttar. Aur aasu mat bahaao. Ab aur mafi mat mango. Humne tumhe kab ka maaf kardiya.. Ab jaldi se tayyar hojao aur Addu ko leke jao. Sab thik hojayega." Nani and Aaji together consoled her.

Dilshaad gave her a hug n left with Ulka.

Scene: 2: Peer Baba's Darga:

DV, Saachi both entered the darga and background music starts. they crossed their paths and the song goes on.

Ishq ki.. saazishein
Ishq ki.. baaziyaan
Haara main khel ke
Do dilon ka juaa

DV was sad and looked lost.

Saachi ties the holy thread (sorry dunno what they call it) and was about to walk off when Addu stopped her. Unknown to both of them DV was watching from a few feet away.

"yeh kya Taai. Aapne dhaga thik se nahi bandha.. waise kya dua maanga hai aapne?"

"kuch nahi. Aur waise bhi maangi hui duwa k bare mein kisi ko nahi bataate.. ab chalo.."

"offo Taai, aap har saal bataati hai. Tho iss saal bhi bataana hoga. Kya maanga aapne?"

"aur kya maang sakti hu. Bas yahi ki meri zindgi se saari pareshaniyan duur hojaye aur main DV ko jaldi bhool-"

"KYA? Yeh kya maangliya aapne Taai? Aur aap tho jaanti hai na ki wohi duwa qubool hoti hai jo pure dil se maangi jaye. Mujhe nahi lagta ki aapne yeh duwa pure dil se mangi hai.. tabhi tho properly nahi baandha.."

"What rubbish.."

Saachi got irritated and began to walk only to bump into DV.

Addu followed her shouting, "come on Taai I know you love him! DV tum yaha?"

Sachi gave him a sad look, then an angry one and walked out.

DV shook his head questioning himself as to why he was here. Sure he was here on Dilshaad's insistence, to pray for himself. But what would he ask?

Saari duniya se jeet ke main aaya hoon idhar
Tere aage hi main haara kiya tune kya asar

He wanted nothing more than to get back Saachi in his life forever. But could he be that selfish, thinking about his happiness? It hurt him that he was letting go of his love; doing something for the first time against his heart. Addu noticed that he was in immense pain. Before he could ask him something, DV jumped to catch the thread that Saachi had tied before it could hit the floors of the darga.

Caressing it in his hands, DV closed his eyes praying silently, the thread still in his hand.

"Kya duwa maanga tumne DV?" Addu asked him, unable to find right words to speak.

"apne liye duwa maangna maine kab ka chod diya hai Addu.." his voice was rough, laced with pain which could surface at any moment.

Meanwhile Saachi came back to take Addu along.

"dekha Taai aapne dhaga thik se bandha nahi woh neeche gir gaya. ab aapki duwa kaise qubool hogi? Accha hua girgaya, I mean DV chota hai tho kya hua.. aap dono tho-"

"bas Advait! Bacche ho tho bacche ki tarah baat karo.. samjhe? Ab chalo..."

It was the first time she called Addu by his full name. Glaring at him, She pulled him roughly by his hand and began walking off. DV retied the thread, finished praying and rushed out remind her something.

"Maine aapka dhaga fir se baandh liya hai. Aur duwa bhi maanga ki aapki sari duwayein qubool hojaye..."

Main dil ka raaz kehta hoon
Ke jab jab saansein leta hoon
Tera hi naam leta hoon
Ye tune kya kiya

Saachi ignored him again and rushed to sit in her jeep.

"Taai, bas ek baat kehna tha aapse.. I know main chota hu. But mujhe lagta hai aap bohot galat kar rahi hai. DV ne apne liye nahi aap k liye duwa maanga. You know what it means Taai? DV se zyada pyar aapse koi karpayega. I hope aap ek saat hojao.. humesha k liye.."

Hot tears streamed down her eyes and she silently cursed herself for hurting DV so much. But did he know how much it hurt her to ignore him this way?

"Taai.. maine kuch galat kaha kya?" Addu asked innocently.

Saachi shook her head and they drove back home.

Scene: 3: two days later

Things were turning out to be normal at Prabhu Nivas. Aaji, Nani were delighted to hear from Rajiv, Saachi's childhood friend.

"Saachi puttar! Teri saari duwayein qubool hogai. Upar wale ne tujhe rasta dikhaaya. Woh Rajiv yaad hai? Jo bachpan se tera deewana hai? Usne phone kiya! Usski tho abhi tak byah nahi hua.. aur woh tum se milna chahta hai. Haye rabba! Main bohot khush hu..."

Saachi gave a fake smile to Aaji and Nani as they finished dinner. Rajiv wanted to meet her? But why? All these years he was still in love with her? She remembered how Rajiv used to playfully tell her aayi baba that he'd marry her when he grew up and smiled at those memories. He was six when he said that. Now he might be around 35. How could he marry her now? That was just a childish act, she thought. Rajiv was her best friend besides Dilz and it would be nice to have him by her side.

That night DV had made up his mind. He was prepared to make his move. He needed to make her believe he did not love her; that was the only way she would move on in life.

He took Dilz and went to talk to Aaji & Nani who were shocked to see him.

"ghabraayiye mat.. main aapko pareshaan karne nahi aaya hu."

He was thankful they dint shut the door on his face. He went on.

"Aaji.. Naani Ji. I'm sorry. Meri waje se aapko aur Saachi ji ko bohot taqleef hua. Main aapko yakin k saat keh sakta hu ki uss din kitchen mei humne aisa kuch bhi nahi kiya jisse aapko sharminda hona pade. Main bas Saachi ji se kuch personal batein kar raha tha, aur Ulka kaku ne hume dekhliya. Aap jaanti hai na woh baat ka kitna bada bakhera banaati hai..."

Aaji Naani couldn't help but listen to his words which were full of honesty.

DV went on.

"Main behak gaya tha. Dosti aur pyar ka fark nahi dekhpaya. Saachi ji ne humesha mujhe apna dost maana. Aur woh ithni acchi thi, sab ka ithna khayal rakhti thi, mujhe ithni acchi lagi ki main unkeliye ladka dhundne k alwa, khud ko unkeliye imagine karne laga. Ab main sochta hu ki woh tho pyar hi nahi tha. I didn't love her! It was more of an attraction. I was attracted to her angel like qualities, sochne laga meri wife ko bhi aisa hona chahiye. Bas aur kuch nahi socha.. mehsus hi nahi kiya ki woh sirf attraction tha. Aaj woh acchi lagi kal ko koi aur acchi lagegi. Har kisi se shaadi tho nahi kar sakte na.. I know stupid lagta hai ab. I was a stupid. Jo bhi hua uss mei meri hi Galati thi.. aur aap tho jaanti hai, saachi ji kabhi galat ho hi nahi sakti. Uss din bhi main hi unhe force kar raha tha baat karne k liye.."

DV finished biting back his tears. He looked around wanting to see Saachi but she was gone. Little did he know she ran at the moment he said attraction.

Saachi's room:

She was crying unable to digest what she heard.

I didn't love her! It was more of an attraction.

Aaj woh acchi lagi kal ko koi aur acchi lagegi.

How could DV do that! Did this mean all his sweet words, his promises, that ring he gave her mean nothing? She was nothing but a crush; a toy to play with? With each passing second, her heart broke into more number of pieces. It hurt so much.

Back in the hall:

DV touched Aaji, Nani's feet. Aaji just patted him on the shoulder and walked away while Nani lifted him up.

"Main Mumbai wapis jaana chahta tha. Lekin.. aise nahi. Saachi ji ke life settle hone k baad hi jaunga. Unki shaadi karaake hi jaunga. I promise my zohra and jabi.. apni Galati ko sudharunga main. Aap log ek mauka doge na? please?"

Nani pulled him into a hug and he cried letting those tears fall that he had been holding back.

"Bas bas! Arey mard hoke rothe ho? Huh? galati sab se hoti hai, usse sudharne ki koshish acche log hi karsakte hai. Arey mere shehzade, accha hua tumne sach ko samja.. tujhe Saachi nahi mili tho kya hua. Usse aur bhi acchi aur jawan ladkia milegi dekhna.."

"jee.. main.. chalta hu.."

DV escaped quickly from there.

Scene: 4: the same night, DV's room.

"thanks Dilz.. tum saat nahi khadi hoti tho main toot jaata.."

"jhoot kisse bol rahe ho DV? Tum puri tarah se toot chuke ho.. kyu kar rahe ho DV? Kyu aisa kar rahe ho? Kya tum Saachi se pyar nahi karte? Kya woh sach mei ek Mazak tha, kyu tumne.. apni mohobbat ko is tarah"

"Mardiya apni mohobbat ko maine.." He looked away from her, with tears in his eyes.

"DV.. DV look at me! Aise nahi ho tum DV! Tum woh DV ho jisse kuch bhi mil sakta hai.. kaha gaya woh DV! Kaha gaya uska confidence!"

"DV usee waqt margaya jab usne pane pyar ko maardiya hai Dilz! Ab sirf Dhruv hai, woh Dhruv jisne kabhi apne dost ko khoya tha.. jaanti ho Dilz. Dhruv se main DV tho bangaya, par meri kismet nahi badla. Aaj maine Saachi ji ko bho kho diya.."

He was facing the window silently crying at his loss. Before Dilz could respond, someone barged inside. Dilz assumed it was Ulka kaku but it was.. Saachi.

"DV.. DV dekho kaun aayi hai?"

DV turned around brushing his tears and was shocked to find Saachi who was super angry.

Part three: Confrontation

Saachi gave DV her best glare and spoke in a commanding voice.

"Kuch sawal karne the tumse.."

Fresh tears leaked from her eyes and she found herself trembling while looking at him.

Dilz began to walk off to give them some privacy but she stopped her.

"Tum yahi ruko Dilz. Tumhare saamne hi mujhe mera jawab sunna hai.."

DV held back his tears and made a nonchalant face.

"tumne Aaji Naani se jo kaha Dv... woh- woh sab"

"Sach tha.."

Hurt flashed in her eyes. She trembled back a few steps but then caught herself before she could fall.

"DV? Tum mujhse.."

"Nahi karta main aap se pyar! Duniya meri age ki kahi sari hongi mereliye"

Dilz and Saachi were shocked at what they heard. How could DV be so rude? His remark made Dilz feel very bad inside, but Saachi was furious.

"How dare you! How dare you DV?"

Dilz never saw her best friend in so much pain. Saachi's head was spinning. Pain and anger overpowered her senses as she took hold of DV's collar.

"DV... Kyu kia tumne aisa? Maine tumhe apna accha dost samjha.. tumse pyar kiya. Tumhe apni zindgi mei sab se zyada ehmiyat diya aur badle mei tumne- tumne yeh suluum kiya mere saat?" she was crying now, "kyu mere kareeb aaye! Kyu mujhe jhooti ummeed dilaya ki tum zindgi bhar mere saat rahoge! Kyu dhoka dia? Kyu mere feelings k saat... KYU KIA AISA KUCH BOLO!"

DV stood there listening to her as she poured out her heart. He thought that his lie would help her to move on, but he could see it was breaking her. How could he tell her that it was all a lie? That he lied for the sake of her happiness.

"Woh kya bolega Saachi. Paagal hogaya hai tumhare pyar mei. Kuch bhi karsakta hai woh tumhareliye. Pooch k tho dekho, apni jaan bhi dedega. Par tum.. tum kyu aayi ho yaha? Tum khud hi chahti hai na ki DV tumhare zindgi se dur chala jaye? Aur ab woh wohi kar raha hai tho tumhe taqleef ho rahi hai?" Dilz piped in, unable to watch the scene anymore. How she hated to see her best friends in pain!

"Par Dilz.. yeh tho keh raha tha ki yeh.."

"Usne kaha aur tumne maanliya? For god's sake DV! Ab tho sach bol.. pooch rahi hai na Saachi tumse!" Dilz was frustrated.

"Kya.. yeh tum.. DV.." Saachi was confused now.

She did not know what to speak. She stared at DV who has tears in his eyes. His eyes were red, puffy; it looked like he had been crying for a while. Why was he in such a pain? Did that mean what he said to Aaji Nani was a lie? Did that mean he loved her too?

"Yeh.. yeh.. sach hai?" she finally managed to ask in a low voice, tears still flowing down her cheeks.

"Kaise soch liya aapne. Ki main aapko dhoka de sakta hu..." he replied softly, "pyar karta hu main aap se bohot zyada.. I love you!"

"I'm sorry! I'm sorry DV. Main.. Jab maine woh sab suna.. muje laga tum.. I'm so sorry DV! Jab tumne kaha ki you were attracted, mujhe bohot gussa aagaya aur main.. Par main kya karti DV? Woh dard mujhse Sahaa nahi gaya aur- I love you DV!"

Then she did something which he didn't expect she hugged him tightly and he hugged her back.

"main tumhe khona nahi chahti DV! Tumse duur hone ka khayal se hi darr lagta hai mujhe.. main kya karti.. Main pehle se hi upset thi. Aur fir mujhse raha nahi gaya. I love you DV.."

DV smiled, first time during that week and whispered back, "I love you too! I love you so much! I'm sorry maine aapse jhoot bola.. bohot pyar karta hu aap se main"

Dilz just smiled and decided to leave the love birds alone.

They parted from the hug and it was then she caught a glimpse of the clock hung on the wall behind him.

"Saade barah? O god! Raat k saade barah bajgaye? Maine ghar pe kisi ko bataaya nahi aur main yaha aagayi, Main door bhi khula chod diya maine- oh no DV? Ab main kya karu?"

He laughed pulling her cheeks and wiped her tears.

"Madam! yeh sab aapko yaha aane se pehle sochna chahiye tha! Ab aap yaha aa hi gayi hai, tho main aapko jaane nahi dunga.."

"DV main.. woh..."

"kyu apne aur mere beech ki duriyan badha rahi hai aap? Kyu fir se mujhse duur jaana chahti hai? Kyu..." he asked her in a low voice.

Her slight smile dropped as she looked at his pained face.

"Duur tho main bhi nahi jaana chahti. Par main kya karu DV? Ek taraf Naani, Aaji; dusri taraf tum.. main kise chunuu?"

"kisi ko bhi nahi. hum dono milke maalmla suljhaa sakte hai. Aap k liye main puri duniya se lad sakta hu.. par aap dar k maare-"

"haan darti hu DV! Bohot darr lagta hai mujhe, jab mere khud ki family; mere aaji, naani nahi maane tho kal ko tumhare parents? Yeh society.. kaise manayenge hum sab ko?"

"Pehle bhi main aapko bol chuka hu. Ki jab aap mere saat hai, tab main kuch bhi kar sakta hu, kisi ko bhi manaa sakta hu. Ab aap yeh kahiye ki aap mere saat denge ya nahi? Boliye, waada kijiye ki aap mere saat nahi chodengi chaahe kuch bhi ho! Jaise kal aapne kiya, waise haalaton se dar k aap mukhar nahi jayengi.. wada kijiye mujhe.."

There was a brief silence as Saachi thought about his words.

"tumhe pata hai DV? Halaton se darr k main mukharna chahti thi. Par main mukhar nahi sakti.." she confessed getting teary eyed, "kyu ki jo jagah maine apni zindgi tumhe diya hai woh main kisi aur ko nahi de sakti.."

"aap ki har baat mere dil ko choo jaati hai Saachi ji," he chuckled through his tears, "Aap ko pata hai? meri zindgi mein aap k siva kisi k liye jagah nahi hai.. aap ki khushi k liye hi main aap se duur ja raha tha.."

They smiled at each other. He embraced her assuring things would turn normal very soon.

"bohot pareshan kia na maine tumhe?" she asked looking into his eyes which were still red and puffy.

"Nahi aap aagayi aur meri saari pareshani duur hogai.." he smiled again.

"ithna pyar karthe ho tho yeh 'aap aap' kehna chod do na.." she mumbled quietly but he heard her.

"ohh.. Aap chahti hai ki main aap k ithne kareeb aajaun?" he asked, his trademark grin forming on his lips.

"nahi.. bas main yeh nahi chahti ki mere honewale.. mujhe aap keh k bulaaye.."

He laughed unable to believe how events of the day eventually turned out to be so good.

"yeh tho sapna nahi hai na? yeh sach mei aap hai yaha mere room mei?" there were happy tears in his eyes now.

"bas bas.. bohot hogaya.. fir shuru hogaye tum?"

"thik hai.. main koshish karta hu Saachi"

"Main.. chalti hu.." she was suddenly feeling shy.

"Arey nahi ithni jaldi nahi.."

He pulled her closer holding her by her waist.

"Chodo.. DV kya kar rahe ho?"

"arey ithne din baad mauka mila hai aap k kareeb aane ka, tho yeh mauka main jaane kaise dunga huh?"

"tum kahi bhi shuru hojaate ho.."

"Iss baar tho aap ne shuru kia hai, haan.."

She hit him playfully on his arm and smiled. At that moment Dilz entered with a plate of pudding.

"sorry for the interruption my friends! Main disturb tho nahi karna chahti par kya karu.. DV ne subah se kuch nahi khaya tho main uss k liye pudding banaa rahi thi. Tho yeh pudding ab hum sab khayenge; tum dono ki patch up ki khushi mei"

DV smiled as he released Saachi and went to embrace Dilz in a hug.

"khush?" Dilz asked him.

"I can't say what I'm feeling Dilz.."

"Chalo kuch khaalo.."

He took a spoonful of pudding and offered it to Saachi.

"DV tumne subah se.. tum jaante ho na DV! Aaji Nani k saat baitke maine.. khaaliya.. tum khaao na"

"hmm.. mujhe pata tha aapne kitna khaya hoga. Dikhawe k liye.. unkliye aapne thoda khaliya ab mereliye bhi khayiye"

Saachi obeyed him while Dilz stood there admiring the couple.

"Par DV... hum aaji Naani se jhoot kaise bol sakte hai. Yeh galat hoga na.. maine unse kaha ki-"

"pyar karna galat nahi hai Saachi ji. Haan jhoot bolna galat hai, par hum log manage kar rahe hai.. aur manage karna galat nahi hoga. Fir shaadi tho hum unki marzi se hi karenge na.."

"par agar woh razi nahi hue tho.."

"oh god!! Tumhari friend kabhi positively kyu nahi sochti Dilz!? Samjhao na inko... ki main kaun hu! DV, the super cool dude, jaise inko pataaya, inke aaji Nani ko bhi pataa sakta hu main. Par beech mei patha nahi kaha se aagayi, Ulka kaku ne sab garbar kar diya.."

"Aaji Naani ko pataaoge? God! You're impossible DV!" Saachi slapped him playfully on his arm again. He smiled hugging her.

"I'm possible Saachi.. ji.. ab hume bhi thodha khilao na.."

Saachi shook her head. Taking a spoonful of pudding, she offered it to him and he ate gleefully.

"Aise hi rehna tum dono. Kabhi kisi k liye apne pyar ko kurbaan mat karna.. kyu ki zindgi mei pyar sifr ek hi baar hota hai, ek baar gawa diya tho saari zindgi tanhaayi mei kaatna padega. Tum dono dekhna Aaji Naani maan hi jayenge! Sacche pyar ki humesha jeet hoti hai.."

Saachi hugged Dilz and left the place.

Saruv go to the darga together for praying. Aaji Nani Ulka too arrive there. Addu, Dilz Saruv start mission Manaao Aaji Naani. Rajiv arrives ;)
