Introduction
Story is quite similar to the series. Milind returns from Turkey with having made his fortune and has high hopes of settling down with Ayesha. He is heartbroken to find her married to Neev and extracts his revenge, not by marrying Prachi but by financially ruining the Shahs and Shergils. He succeeds in his vendetta, taking over most of their businesses and property. Ayesha takes what is left of the Shah fortune and moves to Pune with her mother. Pranay is arrested and convicted of Inder's murder. Neev divorces Ayesha and unable to remain in Mumbai after Pranay's imprisonment, moves to Delhi with his family for a fresh start. Prachi and her family caught in the crossfire of Ayesha & Milind's war, lose their home, fortune and repute. They are forced to move into a small apartment with Prachi having to take on the responsibilty of having to support her family. The story starts 6 months after Milind has assumed control of Shah enterprises.
Part 1
Mumbai, Shah Hotel
Aditya Sharma had experienced a lot in his 25 years of working for Shah enterprises. Raising from a junior accountant to the CFO, there weren't many highs or lows that he hadn't weathered with Inder Shah. But Inder Shah was no more, instead it was Milind Mishra, that he was trying to reason with. "The press is having a field day and the shareholders are getting jittery. You can't blame them, your takeover of this company has hardly been standard.", said Aditya, scanning the financial newspapers. "I set my own standards.", said Milind arrogantly. Aditya wished he could wipe the smirk of Milind's face but he had to grudgingly admit that his 30 year old boss was right. Milind may be arrogant, hot headed, stubborn and look like the neighbourhood ruffian but in all of Aditya's 50 years, he had never seen anyone with his talent for business. "Well, I hope you have a plan up to your standards before the next shareholders meeting. You better address these rumours and speculations before it gets out of hand.", said Aditya trying not to show his irritation. He couldn't understand why someone as savy as Milind didn't seem bothered that the company's name was being blackened in the press on daily basis. Questions were being raised about the extremely unorthodox takeover of Shah enterprises by Milind, especially of the 5 star hotel which was the flagship of the entire company. Milind picked up one of the papers and looked it over. Sitting back in his chair, he buzzed for his secretary, "Mrs Rao, get me Prachi Shah's number." Milind leaned back in his chair and looked at Aditya who was now unable to conceal his irritation, "What are you going to do now?". Milind merely smiled. Prachi Shah was the key to calming nervous investors and countering the bad press.
Prachi returned back to the cramped apartment, she had been sharing with her mother, Dadi, Somwya, Bobby and Alaap for the last 5 months. She was exhausted and discouraged. She had been temping for 3 months but once that had ended, Prachi was finding it near to impossible to find any other work. Even her lack of experience and a Fine Arts degree, completely unsuited for the corporate world would not have been too much of an obstacle, if her family still maintained the wealthy connections, they once had. But since Inder's death, friends that they had known their entire lives had shunned them. The Shah's found themselves just another one of the millions of families trying to eke out a living in the Mumbai jungle. "How did the interview go ?", asked Premlata, handing her a cup of tea. "They said that they will let me know.", said Prachi attempting a smile but failing miserably. Deep down she knew the interview had been a failure. There wasn't much chance of them phoning her back. Just at that moment Prachi's phone rang. For one brief moment, Prachi got her hopes up that she was being called back for another interview, until she heard the deep voice at the other end of the line. A voice that sounded strangely familiar.
"Is that Prachi Shah, Inder Shah's daughter?". "Yes it is, who is this?", replied Prachi, her mind still groping to place the voice. "Milind Mishra, I need to talk to you.", said Milind. Prachi gripped her phone tighter as bitter memories flooded her. It was just over 6 months ago that she had last seen Milind at the Shah Hotel. He had made his announcement of his takeover of the hotel that had been crowning achievement of her father's career. Milind hadn't even bothered to look at Prachi, yet alone talk to her. He had been too busy trying to gage Ayesha's reaction. Trying to see, if he had achieved in hurting her as much as she had hurt him. However Sukriti and Mishraji had tried to comfort Prachi as she tried to stop the tears from coming. Soon afterwards, Ayesha had sold what was left of her father's business and left Mumbai, leaving Prachi and her family with very little. "Are you still there?", asked Milind impatiently. "Yes.", replied Prachi faintly. "Well, like I said I need to see you. Can you make it to the Shah Hotel tomorrow afternoon ?", asked Milind . "What is this about?", asked Prachi. "Be here at 2pm and you'll find out." replied Milind curtly before cutting the call. Prachi was too tired and defeated to even feel angry that the man who had destroyed everything she once had, could so arrogantly summon her to meet him. Prachi knew she would go to Shah Hotel the next day. She had nothing left to lose to hear what Milind Mishra had to say.
Part 2
Note : The Sukriti-Alaap incident never happened in my FF. This means that although Prachi & Milind have met before, their interactions have been very limited. She certainly never bailed him out of jail.
At 1:30pm the following day, Prachi entered the lobby of the Shah Hotel. Prachi was overwhelmed with sadness. This hotel had meant everything to her father. An upscale, exclusive hotel that symbolised all his success.A success, that Prachi had thought Ayesha most deserved to benefit from, when she had handed over the family business to her. Little had Prachi forseen, how it will all turn out. Prachi gave herself a mental shake. She couldn't afford to wallow in the past, right now. She needed all her wits about her when she faced Milind. Prachi was confused and curious as to what Milind had to say to her but she had felt it best not to say anything to her family. Her family especially Alaap and Dadi held Milind just as accountable as Ayesha for their loss of everything. Prachi recognised that Milind's main target had been Ayesha, rather than her family but it didn't make it any easier, to come face to face with him. As she entered the lift to go to the top most floor, none of her father's previous employees recognised her. Like her father, Milind seemed to prefer to run his entire operations out of the Shah Hotel. Grief and regret hit Prachi as soon as she stepped out of the lift, as she remembered the countless times she had come here to visit her father. Prachi managed to pull herself together when she saw Anita Rao, her father's matronly secretary that Milind had seemed to have retained. Anita hugged her warmly and made her sit down before informing Milind that Prachi was here.
Milind put the phone down. So, she had come. Princess Prachi, Inder Shah's beloved eldest child. However, as Prachi entered the room, Milind had to admit that she looked niether like a princess nor like a child. A lot thinner than he remembered her to be and wearing a simple blue salwaar kameez, she looked like a woman who had taken a few hard knocks in her life recently. Milind felt a momentary pang of guilt. Just how much damage, had he caused in his need to avenge himself against Ayesha? Milind immediately killed those feelings, he hadn't seen much concern and care from the Shahs when it came to their servants and their families. "What goes around, comes around", thought Milind harshly. Prachi sat down stiffly at the edge of the chair, desperately trying not to fall apart as she felt her father's presence all around her in the office. But it was a very different man from her father that was facing her from across the desk. Milind was wearing a black suit with a white shirt. Inspite of his groomed appearance, he still had an edge about him.
Milind leaned back in his seat as he watched Prachi. Distrust and tension was clearly visible on her face. He suddenly leaned forward, took some papers of his desk and handed it to her. "A contract for you to work here as a events organiser. I know you don't have a job and the pay is more than fair.", said Milind. Prachi was stunned. She wasn't sure what she had been expecting but this was not it. Prachi looked at the contract. Milind was right, the pay was more than fair. This job could solve so many of her problems but Prachi knew there was an ulterior motive behind this.
"I have no experience and you have made it very clear that you don't care much for my family, so why are you offering me this job?', asked Prachi, sounding a lot more calm than she felt. "It's not out of the goodness of my heart, I can assure you that. My capabilty to run this company is being questioned and so is the way I took over. I need to convince a few people that everything was above aboard. And what better way than to have Inder Shah's daughter join my company. " Noticing Prachi's slightly perplexed expresion, Milind further explained, "It will put to rest any doubts that I swindled your family and it will also show you and your family believe I am capable of replacing your father." Prachi was at a loss for words. He surprised her by being direct and honest but she was also angry that he could be so audacious after all the havoc, he and Ayesha had wrecked. Her anger got the better of her. "I don't want to say anything I'll regret. I'm leaving.", said Prachi, standing up. "Which part do you object to, that I didn't swindle your family or that I can fill your father's position ?", asked Milind. "Both.", replied Prachi. "I didn't cheat your family. You foolishly handed everything to your sister and she burnt it to the ground and I'll make this company, a hundred times more successful than your father ever did. I don't have any illegitimate children to worry about.", said Milind.
Prachi looked at him angrily and turned to leave. Milind got up from behind his desk and quickly moved in front of her, blocking her path to the door. "Do you have another job waiting for you, are you going to make the rent this month, pay your sister's college fees ? Just how much savings do you have left?", asked Milind. Rapidly blinking away her furious tears, Prachi sat back in her seat defeated and cornered. Her families' immediate financial concerns far outweighted her pride. She picked up the contract, "I need time to think about it." Milind sensing weakness, went in for the kill. "It's a job offer, not a marriage proposal. There is nothing to think about. Sign now or this deal is off the table." , said Milind, handing her a pen. Prachi took the pen and felt as if she was signing her fate away. Milind looked at the contract, "Good, you start tomorrow and your first job as my new events co-ordinator is to organise a press conference where you will tell the world just how much you and your family support me in taking over this company." Prachi knew it was too late to object. She had a sinking feeling that she may just have made the bigggest mistake of her life.
Part 3
"It will be fine.", said Aditya. Prachi smiled at him gratefully. In all the years, Aditya Sharma had worked for her father, he had always come across as a stern, serious, somewhat unapproachable businessman. But Prachi would have never made it through the last 2 days without his help or Anita Rao's. Inspite of knowing, she had absolutely no experience, Milind had let her flounder in setting up this press conference. It was Aditya and Anita that had provided Prachi with the necessary phone numbers and guidance. Prachi wished that she could also receive some guidance when it came to dealing with her home situation. As expected, everyone was upset with her for accepting a job from Milind. She could handle Alaap's and Dadi's anger, even Somwya and Bobby's condemnation but it was her mother's disappointment that hurt her the most. Premlata understood why Prachi took the job, but she also blamed herself for being unable to protect her children and having to burden Prachi with the responsibilites of the family.
Prachi stood in a corner in the front of the hotel's largest conference room. A table was set upfront and the press contingent were taking their seats facing the table. It was a strange mix of serious financial reporters and tabloid journalists. There was no sign of Milind. In the past few days, except for a few brusque enquires about the progress of setting up the press conference, Prachi hardly saw or spoke to him. He seemed confident that Aditya will sort out whatever mess she was making. The room was almost full when Milind arrived. As he and Aditya took their places behind the table, the room immediately quietened down. Milind read from a brief prepared statement, "I am here today to clear up any doubts about how I acquired Shah Enterprises. It was a legitimate transaction that took place between myself and Ayesha Shah who had took over ownership of the company on her father's death. I have here the legal documents containing details of this transaction and I will release it to the press at the end of this meeting." Aditya then took over, fielding questions from the financial reporters about the company's share prices and projections for the next quarter.
Prachi was starting to breathe easier, maybe there would be no need for her to say anything. However, the tabloid journalist had no qualms about asking the questions, the financial reporters had avoided. "Mohan Gupta from the Mumbai Star", said the average height, skinny man wearing a baseball hat, "If it was a legitimate transaction, why did Ayesha Shah have to sell the Shah family home?". Milind's expression hardened, "That had nothing to do with me. That is a matter between Ayesha and her family." "So, you honestly claim, in no way to have defrauded the Shahs?", continued Mohan Gupta. Milind kept hold of his temper and dropped his bombshell. "Prachi Shah wouldn't be working for me, if I did, would she?", replied Milind, standing up and beckoning Prachi to join them at the table. There was an immediate stir of interest in the room as Prachi emerged from the corner, she had been hidden in. Prachi could feel her heart in her throat, as she faced the room.
"Miss Shah, does this mean you don't have any problems with Mr Mishra's takeover of this company, a company your father built from scratch?" asked Gupta. "I dont.", replied Prachi barely audible. Milind resisted the urge to glare at her. She didn't look or sound very convincing, far from it. "Miss Shah, you father died under suspicious conditions, then came the revelation of his illegitimate daughter. What are your feelings about all of this?" asked Gupta. Finding, a courage she didn't know she had a few minutes ago, Prachi answered clearly, "My father made mistakes in his life but he was always a fair and honest buinessman and that is the only thing that matters here today." "What do you think of Mr Mishra's ability to lead this company?", asked Gupta. "I think he could do well.", replied Prachi cautiously. Milind kept the expression on his face neutral, inspite of his rising temper. It was far from the ringing endorsement he had hoped for. Prachi Shah was not quite the pushover, he had hoped for. But she surprised him when she said, "And I do appreciate, Mr Mishra not changing the name of this hotel. It would have meant a lot to my father." Milind snuck a look at her. He had to admit, her sincerity was far more convincing and could turn out to be far more helpful than any false displays of support for him would have. The press conference ended soon afterwards.
Prachi returned back to the small office, she shared with Archana Karthik, who was in charge of guest relations in the hotel. Archana had already left for the day and Prachi was about to leave when, she saw Milind standing in the doorway of her office. "That's not what I was expecting.", said Milind. "I'm sorry if it didn't turn out how you wanted. I was just trying to be honest as I could. But I'll pack my stuff and won't return back on Monday, if you want.", replied Prachi. "I didn't change the name of the hotel because it didn't make any business sense and for no other reason.", said Milind bluntly. "I still appreciate it.", said Prachi. Milind looked at her thoughtfully for a moment and then said quietly, "I will see you on Monday." Prachi left the hotel, feeling a lot better than she had in a long time.
Part 4
"What are the papers saying?", asked Milind. "The financial papers have backed off. Mittal's latest takeover is making headlines all over the place. Mumbai Star is still asking questions but other than that the story seems to have died off.", replied Aditya. "We can handle the Star.", said Milind. "Maybe, your gamble with Prachi paid off, the shareholders meeting certainly went off well.", said Aditya. "Maybe.", said Milind. Even tens of thousands of kilometers away across the telephone line, Aditya could sense Prachi Shah was not a subject, Milind wanted to discuss. Inspite of all the years, Aditya had worked for Inder, he had very little dealings with Inder's family. Prachi had always struck him as somewhat quiet and sheltered but in the last 5 weeks, he had got to know her a lot better. She was hardworking, treated everyone with respect and was proving to be quite a quick learner. Aditya hoped that Milind's prejudice against the Shah family wouldn't blind him to that. "When do you return ?", asked Aditya. "This weekend, Sukriti's graduation is next Wednesday.", replied Milind.
For Prachi, the last month had been intense, busy, stressful but also fulfilling. From writing press releases to organinsing conferences, it had proven to be a steep learning curve. She made mistakes along the way but she had people supporting her, especially Archana Karthik. There was a world of difference between 24 year old, reserved Prachi and sophisticated, 37 year old, single mom Archana but they had somehow managed to strike a friendship. They both knew what it felt like to be women trying to make it on their own, in a really tough world. Prachi had been worried how the rest of the staff would react to her especially seeing that less than a year ago, she had been the boss's daughter. Would they accept her as a colleague? But with most remembering Inder's fair treatment of them, they were willing to give her a chance except for Ramesh Joshi. As Ramesh was the junior operations manager, Prachi had to interact with him on an almost daily basis and increasingly, it was becoming more difficult to do so. He seemed to resent her from day one but there was nothing Prachi could do or say about it, as his tactics were most insidious. It was the put downs that was meant to be laughed off as jokes, it was the ever ready excuses as to why he couldn't help her, it was the subtle undermining. Prachi was just not equipped to play his games. Prachi had been relieved when a week after the press conference, Milind had left for London. Without his intimadating presence, she had hoped for smoother transition into her job but unfortunately, she had not anticipated her difficulties with Ramesh.
Prachi was startled, first thing on Monday morning to be called into Milind's office. She hadn't even realised that he was back from London. However, she was pleasantly surprised to see Sukriti, as soon as she entered the office. "Prachi", said Sukriti warmly and hugged her. After Prachi answered Sukriti's queries about her family, Sukriti said,"Guess what? I graduate on Wednesday and Bhaiya is throwing me a party here. You are going to help me organise it." "Congrulations, you deserve it. I know how hard you worked.", said Prachi warmly and then added questioningly, "This Wednesday?". "Why is it a problem?", asked Milind coolly, speaking for the first time. "No, of course not.", replied Prachi somewhat defiantly. She was up for the challenge and more importantly, she really did want Sukriti to have a great party. She remembered all the times Sukriti had helped around the Shah house for parties held for her, for her siblings or for her cousins. It was about time, Sukriti had the favour repaid. "Meet me in the reception hall when you are done here.", said Prachi, hugging her once again and taking her leave.
"I'm so glad Prachi is going to help me.", said Sukriti, once Prachi had left. "She is not helping you. She is getting paid for it, it's her job.", snapped Milind. Sukriti looked at her brother wearily, "Bhaiya, why don't you like Prachi? She is really nice, once you get to know her." "Sukriti, don't forget where we come from and how people like the Shahs should treat us.", replied Milind. "Prachi and her mom have never been anything but nice to me.", said Sukriti. "And the rest of her family?", asked Milind. "What the rest of her family does, is not her fault, Bhaiya. You should only judge her on what she does and not on what Ayes...", said Sukrit, not daring to complete her sentence on seeing the warning look on Milind's face. "Anyway, lets forget about the past. Promise me, you'll give Prachi a fair chance in the future. Think of it as my graduation present." "I'm throwing you this party and you still want a present." protested Milind, unable to stay angry with Sukriti for long. "Yes, I do, so do you promise?", asked Sukriti. "Okay", said Milind, resignedly.
It was the day of the graduation. Prachi was in the main reception hall, trying to reason with Ramesh. "Ramesh, the party starts in a few hours, could you please get someone from maintenace to fix this ?", asked Prachi, staring up at the chandelier in the middle of the hall, where half the light bulbs had seemingly burnt off. "I don't know Prachi, everyone is busy right now, and soon they will leave for the day.", said Ramesh, shrugging indifferently. "Is there a problem here ?", asked Milind suddenly coming up from behind and making both Prachi and Ramesh jump out of their skin. "Why is the word 'problem' never far off whenever Milind sees me?", thought Prachi. "There seems to be something wrong with the lights.", answered Prachi. "And I will have a maintenace guy sort it out within the hour, Mr Mishra.", said Ramesh, smiling ingratiatingly at Milind. Prachi bit her tongue and turned to leave.
"Prachi", said Milind, remembering his promise to Sukriti, as she walked away. Prachi turned around and walked back to him. "I need your help with something.", said Milind stiffly. "I need to get Sukriti a gift." Prachi smiled. Milind may be a difficult employer but he was a wonderful brother. "Do you have anything in mind?", asked Prachi. Milind shook his head. "How about a necklace or earrings?', suggested Prachi. "Okay, that sounds good.", said Milind. "Well, good luck with finding something.", said Prachi but Milind seemed rooted to the spot. "Could you come with me?", asked Milind suddenly. "I have to see to...", said Prachi indicating to the preparations going on in the hall. "I'm sure Ramesh can handle it.", said Milind and before Prachi could say a word, he had called Ramesh from across the room. "Could you handle things here for an hour or two?", Milind asked Ramesh. "Of course.", said Ramesh smiling brightly. "Prachi needs to come with me but she'll be back soon and will take over.", continued Milind. Prachi noticed the instant change of expression on Ramesh's face. "Okay", said Ramesh, his smile faltering.
Milind wanted to turn around and run from the jewelery store. He still hated exclusive stores like this one, remembering how, just a few years ago, he probably even wouldn't even been allowed to enter it. Furthermore it was full of demanding wives and henpecked husbands, or young girls coyly pointing out engagement rings to their lovestruck boyfriends. Milind tried to keep a bit of distance between himself and Prachi. He certainly didn't want to be mistaken for a henpecked husband or a lovestruck boyfriend. "What do you think?", asked Prachi smiling at him, as she looked at a selection of necklaces. Milind forced himself to come closer to her, to get a better view of the jewelery. "How about that?", asked Milind pointing to a gold choker. Prachi winced. The heavy gold necklace would be fine for a 20th wedding anniversary gift, not as a graduation present for a 21 year old girl. "Or maybe something like that?", said Prachi pointing to a simple platinum chain with a diamond pendant. "I think Sukriti would like that.", said Milind taking a closer look at the chain, "Right lets buy it and get out of here."
On the way back to the hotel, Prachi thought back about Milind's discomfort at the jewelry store. It humanised him somewhat. Milind found himself, staring at Prachi's hair. It was really shiny. Milind shook his head and dismissed the thought, after all the gold he had just seen, he supposed everything was going to look shiny. When they reached the hotel, Milind was back to his formal self, "I'll see you tonight at the party. Make sure those lights get fixed." Prachi sighed and headed back to the reception hall, she had a long night ahead of her.
Part 5
"Prachi, everything looks so wonderful. Thank you.", said Sukriti surveying the hall which had been first set up for dinner. A dj was already setting up for the dance afterwards the party. More college students were expected later, for the dance ."Prachi, how is your family?", asked Mishraji coming in with Sukriti, and placing a hand on Prachi's shoulder. It had been a while since Prachi had seen Mishraji and Prachi looked at him fondly. "They are fine.", she said reassuringly. Just then, Milind came in, wearing a blue shirt, black coat and jeans. "Does he realise the effect he is going to have on a roomfull of college girls?" thought Prachi slightly irritably.
Halfway, through dinner, Milind stood up and made a toast to Sukriti. "I'm just want to tell my sister, how proud I am of her for all the hard work that she has put in the last 4 years. I know it hasn't been easy but she stuck with it, and so here's to St Xavier's newest BA.", said Milind raising his glass. Everyone followed suit. "And I would like to give her this.", said Milind, making Sukriti stand up and handed her a small jewellry box. Sukriti opened the box, "Thank you. It's really beautiful!" The surprise in her voice was evident to everyone as she hugged Milind. "Well, actually you got to thank Prachi for that. She chose it.", said Milind quickly, pointing towards Prachi who was directing the serving staff. "Okay, that makes sense.", laughed Sukriti. Prachi looked up at both of them and beamed. Milind hastily took a sip of his drink. Shiny hair, dimpled smile. He really had to stop seeing things when it came to Prachi Shah.
After dinner, the tables were quickly cleared and moved to the side, the lights were darkened and a steady stream of college students started to arrive. Milind pulled Ramesh and Prachi to one side of the room. "I got to take my father back home but I'll be back within the hour. If you see anything getting out of hand, call Hussein immediately.", said Milind, refering to Hussein Khan, the head of hotel security. "Of course.", said Ramesh smiling broadly. Prachi merely nodded. The party was in full swing by the time, Milind left. Prachi had never attended any parties during her college days. Standing in a corner of the room, she was glad for it. She was barely 3 years older than most of the guests but she still felt out of place. At least Sukriti was having a good time, laughing with her girlfriends.
Just then, Prachi noticed a disturbance at the entrance. Sanjay, a hotel security guard, manning the entrance, was refusing 3 decidedly inebriated youths entry into the party. Ramesh intervened and allowed them through. Sanjay unable to defy a junior manager, stood back and let them enter. "Ramesh, I don't think that was such a good idea.", said Prachi worriedly. "Listen Prachi, would you much rather have them cause a scene or let them in, let them have a few drinks and then go on their way?", asked Ramesh irritably and walked away. Prachi couldn't shake off the bad feeling, she had about those guys. For the next half an hour, she made sure that they were within sight. Prachi's worst fears were confirmed when she spotted them in a darkened corner of the room. One of the guys discreetly handed another one a suspicious looking tablet and he swallowed it. "Ramesh, I think those boys have drugs on them.", said Prachi frantically, making her way back to Ramesh. Ramesh resignedly followed her to where the 3 guys were. "I don't see anything. They are just having a drink. Are you sure, you're not imagining things?", asked Ramesh rudely. "I know what I saw.", said Prachi angrily walking away. She wasn't going to let Ramesh's indifference spoil Sukriti's party. Sanjay had his hands full dealing with a new influx of people, she would have to call Hussein.
"No, you did the right thing by calling me.", Hussein reassured her. A tall, well built ex army officer in his 40's, Prachi knew Hussein would take of things. She just hoped she wasn't panicking needlessly. They were standing outside the hall when Prachi saw Milind return. "What's going on here ?", asked Milind, looking slightly worried. "Prachi thinks she saw some kids with drugs.", said Hussein. "Okay, let's check this out.", said Milind. Prachi was relieved that Milind was taking her seriously. The 3 of them went back into the hall and Prachi pointed out the 3 guys to Milind and Hussein. Milind and Hussein went over to the guys and after a few discreet words from Milind, they surprisingly started to leave the hall with Milind and Hussein without much fuss. On his way out, Milind told Prachi, "Stay here and don't say anything to anyone but get Ramesh to call in some extra guards from outside." After a few minutes,Prachi managed to find Ramesh in the crowd, "Mr Mishra wants you to call in some extra security guards." "Why, does this have anything to do with your supposed drug dealers?", asked Ramesh. "You have to ask Mr Mishra his reasons.", said Prachi firmly. Ramesh looked at her suspiciously but for once actually listened to her and set off.
Milind was standing with Hussein, outside the small room, which they used to question anyone about any suspicious behaviour in the hotel. "Ecstasy tablets and also some cocaine.", said Hussein, showing Milind, what he had found on the now very sober youths. "Was there anything more? That's not a big amount. Definitely not enough to be dealing with.", said Milind. "I also don't think that they are dealers. They are just 19 year old college kids. I think it was just for their use.", replied Hussein. "Okay, if they are not dealers, we are not going to call the cops. Get their parents here and then release them.", said Milind.
Milind went back to the party and found an anxious Prachi waiting outside the hall, "You were right, they did have drugs on them.", said Milind. On noticing Prachi's still worried expression, Milind said, "Don't worry, everything has been taken care off. It's going to be fine." Prachi looked more reassured as they entered the hall together. Milind suddenly feeling very awkward, added, "Actually thanks, if it hadn't been for you, we could have had a real problem." Prachi suddenly felt flustered, was Milind actually thanking her? "I just want Sukriti to have a really nice time.", said Prachi sincerely. Watching his sister dance away to 'Deewangi Deewangi' with a whole bunch of friends, Milind turned to Prachi and smiled, "I think, she is." If Prachi had been feeling flustered before, it was nothing compared to how she felt when she saw Milind smile at her. She couldn't remember Milind ever smiling at her before and she hoped that this wouldn't be the last time.
Part 6
It was almost 3am before the party wound up. A bleary eyed Sukriti thanked Prachi again and Milind told her, that she could come in late that day. An exhausted Prachi took him up on his offer and it was past 10 am before she got to work that day. Inspite of her tiredness and a busy schedule ahead of her, Prachi was looking forward to her day. With Milind having managed to contain the drugs problem, the party could be termed a success. Prachi felt she was finally getting to grips with her job. She had to start immediately organising a conference for German investors looking to take advantage of India's booming economy. However as soon as she got to her office, she was confronted by a worried looking Archana. "Milind wants to see you immediately.", said Archana. "Okay", said Prachi, a bit puzzled both by Archana's expression and by Milind needing to see her. "Prachi, he came down here himself looking for you and he didn't look too happy.", Archana warned her. Prachi was now thoroughly confused. Everthing had seemed fine at the end of the party. In fact, Milind was actually treating her somewhat civilly and it was too early for a progress report on the conference. So, what could be the problem?
Milind, meanwhile was pacing his office. He should have known better when it came to the Shahs. Like her family, Prachi couldn't be trusted. She had almost had him fooled these past few days with her hardwork and sweet and caring act towards Sukriti. But it hadn't taken long for her true self to show. "Come in", said Milind on hearing the knock on his office door. "Milind, you needed to see me.", said Prachi warily, immediately noticing the angry expression on Milind's face as he stood by the window. "Please explain this to me.", said Milind, moving to his desk and picking up the bunch of newspapers on his desk and then slamming it back down. Prachi picked up the Mumbai Star. The headline screamed 'Drug Use At Shah Hotel'. Prachi was increasingly aghast as she further read the article. "Insider sources inform the Mumbai Star that during a graduation party for Sukriti Mishra, the sister of Milind Mishra, owner of Shah Hotel, guests drank excessively and there was rampant use of drugs. Instead of bearing a responsibility towards their guests, many of whom were barely out of their teens and reporting the matter to the police, Shah Hotel acting on the orders of owner Milind Mishra, preferred to sweep the incident under the carpet, in fear of jeopardising the hotel's reputation." Prachi quickly looked through the rest of the newspapers. Even the highly reputable papers seemed to carry some sort of story about the drug use in the hotel.
"How did this get out?", asked a bewildered Prachi. "That's what I would like you to tell me.", replied Milind coldly. "You think, I informed the papers?", asked a dismayed Prachi. "There was only 3 people who knew exactly, what was going on. I am obviously not going to inform the papers and I trust Hussein completely, so that only leaves you.", said Milind. "Well, actually I did ...", said Prachi but stopped herself. If she accused Ramesh without any proof, it would be no better than what Milind was doing to her. "You did what? Phone the papers, the first chance you got? Dragged my name and my sister's through the mud?", demanded Milind. "Why would I do that, when I was the one who told you and Hussein about the drugs in the first place?", asked now an equally angry Prachi. "Damned, if I know what game you're playing. Maybe you saw the perfect opportunity. Carry on working here and still make some extra money on the side, selling stories to the papers." said Milind angrily. Prachi was close to tears but she was not going to give Milind Mishra the saticfaction of seeing her cry. Milind saw the hurt expression on Prachi's face but it just made him, steel himself further. He wasn't about to get fooled by her again. "You are fired. I can't have someone who I don't trust, work for me.", said Milind and turned his back on her as he looked out the window again. "That's fine.", said Prachi sadly, "I can't work for someone who doesn't trust me either." Milind turned around when he heard the door shut behind him.
Prachi held her composure when she explained to Archana what had happened. "I'll speak to him, he has got to know it couldn't have been you.", said Archana. Prachi looked at her gratefully but said, "Thanks but don't. It will just make things worse." As Anita and Archana helped Prachi pack her things, Prachi realised how much this job had come to mean to her in a short space of time and not just beacuse it was a steady source of income. She had made good friends like Archana and more importantly, for the first time in her 24 years, she felt she was doing something productive with her life. She was finally finding out what it was like to be independent and also at the same time was able to help out her family enormously. She may have been reclutant to accept the job but once she did, she had never been anything less than 100% committed. But unfortunately Milind was never going to see that. She was never going to be anything more than a spoiled rich girl to him. A spoiled rich girl with apparently no ethics.
Walking out of the hotel with her things turned out to be far easier than confronting her family. Everyone except Bobby was at home. They were all surprised to see Prachi back home by luch time. Before anyone could ask her anything, Prachi said, "There was a misunderstanding at work and Milind fired me." "What else can you expect from people like that?", said Dadi contemptuously. "Prachi, what really happened?", asked Premlata, going and sitting next to Prachi on the sofa, that she had collapsed on. "Who the hell does Milind Mishra think he is? Firing you ? While he was still sitting in that chawl, Dad was builiding that hotel.", said Alaap angrily. "Alaap, you are not helping.", said Premlata. Prachi just sat quietly, looking miserable. "I guess this means I can't go to Goa.", Somwya suddenly said angrily. "Somwya! Please, you weren't going on that trip even if Prachi hadn't lost her job.", admonished Premalata. Prachi buried her face in her hands. What was she going to do now?
Part 7
"You fired her! Without any investigation or following any procedures?", asked Aditya in disbelief. "It's my hotel and I'll do what I think is right.", said Milind coldly. "It may be your hotel but there is still protocols to be followed.", retorted Aditya. "Of course, you will come to the defence of Inder Shah's daughter.", snarled Milind. "And it's because she is Inder's Shah daughter, you have lost all objectivity in this matter. You are letting your dislike of that family affect your judgement. There were nearly a hundred guests, as well as other staff working there that night. Any one of them could have seen or heard something. I suggest you first make sure none of the other staff had anything to do with this.", said Aditya. When Milind didn't say anything, Aditya knew his words had made an impact. Milind picked up the phone, "Mrs Rao, I want the name of every staff member who worked in my sister's graduation party."
"Somwya, I need to speak to you.", said Prachi. "Didi, I'm getting late for college.", replied Somwya. "Okay, this afternoon then.", said Prachi firmly. Somwya seeing Prachi's determined face, nodded and left. Prachi knew that Somwya felt the sudden change in the family's fortunes keenly. She went from being one of the It girls on campus, always with the latest fashions and accessories to someone who could barely pay her fees. Prachi sympathised and wished her sister could have everything she wanted but she also knew she had to help Somwya realise that college trips to Goa was not one of life's necessities, paying the month's rent was. Prachi realised she had no idea how they were going to pay that month's rent . Prachi tried not to give into the despair that had overwhelmed her the previous day. She had to keep positive, no matter how difficult things looked at the moment.
Sanjay look terrified as he sat across from Milind. "I didn't want to let them in, even Miss Prachi didn't want them to come in. They were already drunk, I thought they would cause problems.", said Sanjay. "So, why did you let them in anyway?", asked Milind. "Mr Ramesh said they would cause more problems if we didn't let them in.", said Sanjay. "Okay, you can go.", said Milind. Ramesh entered Milind's office, looking confident and assured. "Those 3 guys who arrived at the party, already drunk, why did you allow them in?', asked Milind. "I felt they would cause less of a disturbance if we just let them in, instead of trying to throw them out. I apologise if it was the wrong thing to do but at the time, it seemed the best decision.", said Ramesh smoothly. Milind and Aditya looked at each other. It seemed a plausible enough explanation. "Of course, if I had known they had cocaine on them, I would never have let them in.", continued Ramesh.
Milind was suddenly suspicious. The papers hadn't specifically mentioned which drugs were used and even if they had, they had made the drug use seem widespread. How could Ramesh be so sure that those 3 specific guys had drugs on them and more specifiacally cocaine. "How do you know they had cocaine?", asked Milind. "It was in the papers.", said Ramesh, looking a lot less confident. "No, it wasn't.", said Milind. "It wasn't?", said Ramesh, looking decidedly nervous now. "Oh yeah, that's right Prachi mentioned it.", he said, quickly backtracking. "Prachi, when did she mention this?", asked Milind, a dangerous glint appearing in his eye. Ramesh thinking he had found an escape route, just buried himself further, " When she pointed them out." "So, you knew there were people with drugs in the party all along.", said Milind. "Yeah, but you and Mr Khan took care of things.", added Ramesh even more nervously. Ramesh seemed to know a lot about that night, far more than Prachi did. "Prachi didn't know it was cocaine and you better start telling me the truth.", said Milind menacingly. Ramesh sensing the game was up made a full confession, about how Prachi warned him about the drugs, about not taking her seriously, then spotting Milind and Hussein taking those 3 guys out of the hall when he went out to call more security guards, how he followed them, how he listened to Milind and Hussein's conversation outside the security room and then how he quickly tipped of the Mumbai Star. "Get him out of here.", said Milind to Aditya, not trusting himself to be in the same room with Ramesh for a minute longer. Firing Ramesh was going to be the easy part, what he had to do next was going to be far more difficult.
Everyone was out of the apartment. Bobby & Somwya were already at college, Alaap had gone for a job interview and Premlata & Dadi were at the market. Prachi was clearing out the breakfast dishes before she could start looking through the papers for job advertisements. Hearing a knock on the door and thinking someone from her family had come back home early, Prachi was shocked to see Milind standing outside her door. "It was Ramesh.", said Milind. Prachi didn't say anything but stood back and let Milind enter the apartment. It didn't make Milind feel any better. Prachi's new home wasn't exactly the chawl but it wasn't far off either. The irony of the situation didn't escape Milind especially since now the Mishras lived in a bungalow, not even 2 streets away from Prachi's old home. "Why didn't you tell me that Ramesh knew about the drugs?", asked Milind. "I didn't it was fair to accuse someone without any proof.", said Prachi quietly. "Unlike me.", said Milind. Prachi kept quiet. " I'm sorry. I misjudged you and I didn't know all the facts.", said Milind.
"I wouldn't do something that will hurt the hotel's name.", said Prachi. "I should have realised that.", said Milind gravely. "And I won't forget it in the future if you get Anita to stop serving me cold coffee, which she has been doing since you left.", he added with a smile. Prachi found herself smiling back and then remembering her manners, "Sorry, do you want a cup of coffee?". "No, I want to get back to the office. I have a meeting and you have a conference to organise.", said Milind. Milind had reached the door, when he turned back to see that Prachi hadn't moved. "Prachi, you are coming back to work aren't you? You do still want your job?" asked Milind uncertainly. Prachi smiled. She had never seen Milind look so unsure about anything before. "I need to change.", said Prachi. "Change what?", asked Milind blankly. "My clothes.", laughed Prachi, referring to the frayed 3 year old salwaar kameez that was she was wearing, "Or at the very least my shoes". Milind looked down at her feet. Those were really pretty toes showing out of Winnie-the-Pooh bedroom slippers. Milind quickly jerked his head back up. "Give me 10 minutes.", said Prachi. "I'll wait in the car.", said Milind, getting out of the apartment as fast as he could.
Prachi returned back home late that night. She had lost a full day in organising the conference and now she had to work the weekend. She was tired but she still needed to speak to Somwya. Going to their bedroom, she saw Somwya was already in bed. "Somwya, are you asleep?", asked Prachi. Somwya turned around to face Prachi. "I know you disappointed about your trip but ...", said Prachi. "Don't worry about it, Didi. I'll get the money on my own.", said Somwya. "How?", asked Prachi, frowning. "Modelling", replied Somwya. "Somwya, modelling jobs aren't easy to find. You need a professional agent.", said Prachi alarmed. "Then I'll find one.", said Somwya obstinately. "Somwya, promise me, you are not going to do anything without telling me first." said Prachi. "Somwya!", said Prachi once again when Somwya said nothing. "Okay, I promise.", said Somwya, turning her back on Prachi to go back to sleep. Prachi did not feel reassured.
Part 8
"I'm going to need a review report on the conference by Thursday.", said Milind. "I should be able to get the feedback forms this afternoon and I will start on it.", replied Prachi. It was the final day of the 3 day German investors conference. Prachi had an hours lunch before she returned back to the conference for the final afternoon session. She was in the elevator with Milind, both of them on their way back to their respective offices. Having overcome their initial distrust of each other, Prachi could now see Milind was a tough but fair employer and Milind could see that Prachi was a hardworking and capable employee. There was a moment of silence and Prachi became conscious of how close she was standing to Milind. If she moved slightly back, she was going to hit him full on his chest. To avoid any such situation, Prachi quickly took a step forward. To distract herself from Milind's claustrophobic presence, Prachi switched her phone back on to check her messages. She was surprised to find 4 calls from Bobby in the last hour. Milind was glad Prachi put some distance between them. Her hair smelt as good as it looked.
Milind was jolted out of his thoughts, when he heard Prachi exclaim, "What?! Did you phone Riya? Okay, I'll phone her now." Prachi ended the call and started to frantically push the elevator buttons. "Prachi, what's wrong?", asked Milind concerned, as the elevator started to go back down. "Somwya was supposed to come back home from college with Bobby. When he couldn't find her, he phoned her and she told him she was on her way to meet a modelling agent. But she didn't tell him exactly where she was going and now she is not answering her phone.", explained Prachi. The elevator stopped and both of them got off.
As they walked into the lobby, Prachi phoned Riya, Somwya's best friend. "Riya, where is Somwya?", asked Prachi. "Prachi, I promised ...", replied Riya. "Riya, we don't know the first thing about this guy. Somwya could be in real trouble, if you know something, please tell me now.", said Prachi. "His name is Ajith something and she is going to meet him at Shah Hotel.", said Riya. "Shah Hotel?!", asked Prachi. "Yeah, that's why Somwya agreed to meet him in the first place. She thought he must be for real if he could afford to stay at your dad's hotel." "Modelling agencies don't work out of hotel rooms.", said Prachi, completely terrified now. "I think she is here.", said Prachi turning to Milind, "I have to find her before anything happens to her." But where to start looking in a hotel this size?
"Do you have a picture of her?", asked Milind. Prachi pulled out the family picture, she kept in her wallet. Milind took the picture to the doorman. "Did you see this girl in the last few hours?", asked Milind. "Yes, Mr Shah's daughter, I thought she was going to see Miss Prachi.", said the doorman. "How long ago was this?", asked Milind. "About an hour ago", replied the doorman. Prachi was in despair, anything could have happened in the last hour. Milind went to the reception desk."Do you know the name of this guy?", Milind asked Prachi. "Ajith or something like that.", replied Prachi. "Check for anyone booked under that name." Milind told the receptionist. After a few seconds, the receptionist shook her head, "Sorry, Mr Mishra there is no one of that name." Prachi tried to fight the rising wave of panic. "Okay, I want a printed list of all rooms booked by a single male.", said Milind. As they waited for the list, Milind phoned Hussein. "Meet me in the lobby with every available security guard." Within 10 minutes the lobby was full with Milind's staff. "We are looking for this girl.", said Milind passing the photo around. "I want every room on this list checked . If you think the room is empty or a guest is refusing to open the door, phone reception." Hussein quickly split the men and joined the search.
Milind remained with Prachi. Prachi could feel the tears rolling down her cheeks. "Prachi, if she is here, we'll find her.", said Milind softly. Prachi just nodded mutely. Milind was feeling more guilty than he could ever remember. In a way, he felt responsible for what was happening. If he hadn't ruined this family, in the way he did, maybe this 19 year old girl wouldn't be in so much danger right now. Just then, the reception desk phone rang. A security guard couldn't get into one of the rooms on the 5th floor. "Are you sure there is someone in the room?", asked Milind. "No one answered but I could hear voices.", replied the guard. "Okay, wait there.", said Milind.
Milind with Prachi in tow speed up to the 5th floor. Milind knocked on the door, "Hotel management, open this door.", said Milind. There was a crash and then they heard a scream, "Help!". "Somwya!", screamed Prachi. Milind using his master disc key opened the door. A man in his late 30's was holding Somwya by her wrist as she desperately tried to get away from him. Milind grabbed the guy by the scruff of his neck and threw him to the security guard. "Get him downstairs.", said Milind furiously. Prachi was hugging a sobbing Somwya. "Somwya, listen to me. Did he do anything?", asked Prachi, holding Somwya's face. "No, your'll got here in time. Didi, I'm so sorry, I should have listened to you.", said Somwya, crying even harder. "It's okay.", said Prachi as she held Somwya tightly. "Thank you.", said Prachi looking at Milind gratefully. "Get a driver to take you home.", said Milind.
"Somwya doesn't want to press charges. She doesn't think she can face going to court.", Prachi explained Milind the next day. "That's understandable.", said Milind. Anyway, after the interrogation Ajith received from Hussein, Milind didn't think he would be luring young girls into any modelling scams again. "Is she going to be okay?", asked Milind. "She will be. She just needs to start being more responsible.", said Prachi. "Prachi, what happened with your family and Ayesha and ..", said Milind. Prachi was surprised to hear Milind mention Ayesha. "Somwya isn't the only one who has to take responsibility. I was wrong to hand over everything to Ayesha. I was trying to make up for my father's mistakes but it wasn't the right thing to do.", said Prachi. "We all made mistakes.", said Milind quietly. "But now we need to look ahead.", said Prachi . Prachi realised that she meant it.
Part 9
The reception hall was transformed. Brightly coloured streamers and balloons could be found in every corner. The large Christmas tree and 80 or so kids running around completed the transformation. The sounds of gift wrap being ripped and the excited squeals of delight as presents were compared could be heard around the room. Prachi had been a bit apprehensive about approaching Milind with her idea of a Christmas party for local children's charities. But she had been pleasantly surprised when he readily agreed. It was 2 days before Christmas and looking at the proceedings around her, Prachi knew this was the most fulfilling experience of her job so far. All the staff had been more than willing to help and even Somwya, recovering from her experience, along with Bobby had volunteered to be Santa's helpers.
Prachi was helping a 5 year old girl called Shriya unwrap her present. Shriya didn't want to tear the pretty paper, so Prachi was sitting with her on the floor, carefully trying to remove the cellophane tape. "Having fun?", asked Milind, startling both Prachi and Shriya. "Auntie, is very slow, isn't she?", said Milind, bending down on his haunches and taking the present from Prachi. Shriya giggled and nodded. Milind took a pen knife from his pocket and quickly & cleanly cut through the wrapping. Shriya excitedly grabbed her new doll and the gift wrap and ran off to show her friends her present. Milind stood up and extended an helping hand to Prachi. Prachi took hold of his hand and found herself being pulled up. It took Prachi a moment or two, to realise that she was still holding onto Milind's hand and she was still staring into his very, very dark eyes. Prachi quickly pulled herself away. Milind could still feel the warmth of her hand in his.
"This was a good idea.", said Milind, "And not just because it's good publicity." Something suddenly caught Milind's attention. Behind the white beard and red outfit, there was something vaguely familiar about Santa, who was posing for a photo with a little boy. "Who's playing Santa?", asked Milind curiously. "Look closer.", said Prachi, smiling widely. "Aditya!",said Milind. "How did you manage that?", chuckled Milind. "I have my ways.", said Prachi mischievously. "I'll remember that.", said Milind with a smile. Prachi quickly looked away and changed the subject. "When do you leave for Fiji?", asked Prachi. Milind was taking both Sukriti and Mishraji for their first overseas holiday. "Tomorrow", replied Milind.
Just then, the room interrupted into huge cheers as Bobby switched on a dvd of Barney The Dinosaur. After watching a few minutes, Milind asked Prachi, "Do kids really like this?". "Yes", laughed Prachi looking at Milind's dubious expression. "I hope my kids don't.", said Milind, still looking confusedly at the screen. "You want children?", asked Prachi, slightly surprised. "At least 4.", said Milind unthinkingly. "Four!", laughed Prachi in amazement. "Why, what's wrong with 4?", asked Milind. "My mother had 4 children and it's not easy.", said Prachi. "Well maybe for the father but not for the mother.", she added with a smile. "So, how many kids would you have?",asked Milind, unable to understand why he was so curious. "Two", replied Prachi. Milind shook his head and speaking from his experience as one of two kids said,"They'll always wish there were more of them.". "Well, how about 3? That a good compromise.", said Prachi. As soon as the words left Prachi's mouth, she was completely mortified. Had she just negiotiated with Milind on how many children to have? "Yeah, 2 girls and ...", Milind didn't complete his sentence. "Why the hell am I discussing this with Prachi?", thought Milind, completely bewildered.
They were both saved from any further embarrassment when they heard a cry of "Unkle Melee!". They turned around to see a mini tornado in pink heading towards them. Sara, Archana's 4 year old daughter ran straight to Milind and latched onto his knee. "Hey princess", said Milind, as he picked her up and tossed her in the air much to Sara's delight. "God, she has been impossible the entire day.", complained an exhausted looking Archana entering the room. "Wanna see Santa?", asked Milind. Sara nodded her head vigorously. Prachi watched as Milind carried Sara over to Aditya and Somwya. "Unkle Melee would make some lucky girl, a very nice Christmas present wouldn't he?", said Archana, tongue in cheek. Prachi just laughed but she couldn't help blushing when she saw Milind look at her from across the room.
Part 10
The hall was full to capacity, the house music playing reverberated through the room, Prachi's feet hurt and her head ached. The new years party at the Shah Hotel was the most sought after ticket in town for the sophisticated 20 something Mumbai crowd. Prachi knew she should be glad that the party was turning out to be such a success but all she wanted to do was go home, change into her pajamas and get into bed. Her headache was worsening by the minute. And even though the black dress, she was wearing in order to fit in with the party's fashionable crowd was far longer and more demure than all the mini skirts and low rise jeans surrounding her, Prachi still felt self conscious. And everytime she took a step in her strappy heels,Prachi thought longingly about her bedroom slippers. However this was one party that was not going to end anytime soon. The crowd was even more raucous than Sukriti's graduation party but the hotel was taking no chances. Security was absolutely tight and everyone had to be searched before entering the hall. Surprisingly no one complained, especially since it meant they got the chance to see Tasha Sood perform.
Tasha was rapidly becoming one of the biggest pop stars in India. Her heavily synthesised pop single was top of the charts, her raunchy video was the most requested on MTV and she was the pin-up of millions of boys around the country, Bobby included. Prachi had scored a coup of sorts by booking her for a 30 minute act at the hotel. "Panchi, right ?", queried Tasha. "Prachi, actually.", replied Prachi. "Okay, could I have some mineral water ?", asked Tasha as she looked around the hotel's exclusive penthouse suite, she had been given to use to get ready. "Of course.", said Prachi readily, just relieved that Tasha was there. Tasha had arrived 30 minutes late but Prachi still had hopes that she could make it on stage by 10pm. However, Tasha soon crushed those hopes. While her stylist fussed with her hair and make-up, Tasha took numerous phone calls.
It was nearly 10:25pm and Tasha was still deciding whether to wear a gold mini skirt or silver hot pants. She seemed completely oblivious about the time, confident that the crowd would wait for her. A frazzled Prachi made her way back to the hall. The crowd was starting to become restless. Some in the crowd was whistling, while the rest were chanting Tasha's name . Prachi became even more tense, when she caught sight of a scrowling, unimpressed Milind. "Oh god, what is he doing back from Fiji so soon ?", thought Prachi. Prachi knew she had to go over and explain the situation to him but it didn't help that he was looking even more tanned and rugged than usual.
Milind meanwhile was searching the room for Prachi. He had to cut his vacation short due to a meeting that had been brought forward. The crowd was growing increasingly agitated and the last thing he wanted was a riot in his hotel due to some two bit pop star. He could see Prachi had done a great job in organising the party but he still was going to wring her neck if she didn't get Tasha on stage soon. Just then he saw her approach him. Milind frowned even more. She looked different. He stared at her black dress which was far more revealing than anything he had ever seen her wear before. He snapped out of it when he heard a drunken scream of 'Tasha, I love you'. No matter how mesmerising Prachi's painted pink toes looked in those shoes, there were more pressing issues on hand. "Want to tell me what's going on ?", asked Milind. "I'm sorry but Tasha is running a bit late.", stammered Prachi. "I don't care how you do it but I want her on that stage in the next 5 minutes.", said Milind fiercely and walked off.
Prachi hurried back up to the penthouse suite. She felt relief flood her when she saw Tasha put the finishing touches on her make-up. "You look beautiful.", Prachi told Tasha sincerely. Tasha was without a doubt an absolute knock out in her pink halter neck top and gold mini skirt. Prachi felt dowdy and homely in comparison. Tasha smiled sweetly, "Thank You.". The minute Tasha got on stage, the crowd forgave her for the 40 minute delay. As she shimmied, swayed and crooned on stage, she had the crowd eating out of her hand. Prachi had to admit that she was worth the exorbitant fee the hotel had paid for her appearance. At the end of her set, Tasha very graciously came back on stage for a 10 minute encore and even Milind was looking slightly more relaxed after seeing the crowd's positive reaction.
Both Prachi and Milind made their way to the penthouse suite to thank Tasha for her fabulous performance. Tasha was already on her way out to another party. However, when Prachi introduced her to Milind, she seemed in slightly less of a hurry to leave. "This is a wonderful hotel.", said Tasha. "Thank you.", said Milind. "In fact, I think this would be a great place for me to announce my next tour.", said Tasha. "I'm sure we could help you with that." replied Milind. Tasha's assistant pointed to her watch, indicating that they had to leave. Tasha smiled flirtly at Milind, "I guess I will be seeing you soon then, Milind." Milind merely nodded but gave her an intense, smouldering look. Prachi resisted the urge to drive her stiletto through Milind's foot.
As the lift, made it's way back down, Prachi leaned her head against the wall and closed her eyes. Her headache was back with a vengence. But it was nearly 12pm and once the new year was ushered in, the party was still going to go on for a few more hours. And she was suddenly feeling irritated with Milind. "Are you okay?", asked Milind, looking at her wan expression. "I'm fine.", said Prachi shortly. "You don't look fine.", said Milind bluntly. "It's just a headache. I'll be fine.", said Prachi, forcing herself to be polite. "Go home.", said Milind. "I can't. The party isn't over.", said Prachi. The lift doors opened and Prachi involuntarily winced with pain when she heard the noise coming out of the hall. "Okay, you are going home.", said Milind firmly. "But the party...", protested Prachi. "I'll take care of things.", said Milind, as he walked her out the door. Prachi was feeling too worn out to protest any more.
"We need a car.", said Milind to the doorman. As they waited for the car, Milind and Prachi stood quietly for a moment as the cool air and dark night enveloped them. The temporary peace was broken by loud screams of "10, 9, 8..". "You should go back inside for the countdown.", said Prachi. "I'm fine here.", replied Milind. "3,2,1...Happy New Year." Loud cheers and singing erupted. Just then the car arrived. "Happy new year", said Prachi as she got into the car. "Happy new year", replied Milind. Prachi looked at him but the expression on his face was unreadable.
Part 11
"So Tasha, any truth to the rumours about you and Akash Mehta ?", asked Mumbai Star's Mohan Gupta, referring to Tasha's supposed dalliance with India's swashbuckling middle order batsman. "We are just friends.", replied Tasha with a coy smile. "We are here to discuss Tasha's upcoming tour and not her personal life.", intervened Tasha's manager, Satish Singh. "Yeah right, like Akash Mehta is good enough for her.", said Bobby scornfully. "And I suppose you are.", replied Somwya sarcastically. "Would you both, please keep quiet! Your'll are not even supposed to be here.", admonished Prachi in a low whisper. Against her better judgement, Prachi had allowed die-hard fans Bobby and Somwya to sneak into Tasha's press conderence at the hotel to announce concert dates for her latest tour. Like the new year's show almost 2 weeks ago, Tasha had the entire room charmed. After a while, even a hardened, mud racking journalist like Mohan Gupta was sporting the same gooey look on his face as Bobby.
The press conference was almost over. Satish had completed announcing the 12 dates of the tour and Tasha was busy posing for the photographers. Prachi felt as if she could breathe easier. The entire thing had gone off without a hitch and even Bobby and Somwya's presence hadn't caused any problems. But a few minutes later she wasn't too sure about that, when she saw Milind walk into the room and spot them. "Milind, I'm sorry. I know I shouldn't have allowed Bobby ...", said Prachi. "It's okay.", said Milind, interrupting her explanations. Prachi knew that she ought to be relieved that Milind wasn't bothered by Bobby & Somwya gatecrashing the press conference but she was slightly disconcerted by the impassive expression on his face. Why was he even here, an event like this was not something he usually concerned himself with. "Didi, introduce me to her.", implored Bobby. "No, she is here for a press conference, not to be harassed by you.", said Prachi firmly. "Common, I'm sure she won't mind.", said Milind. Bobby pumped his fist and left with Milind. Somwya rolled her eyes and looked on with Prachi as Milind introduced Bobby to Tasha. Tasha signed Bobby an autograph and posed for a photograph with him. Bobby looked as if he had died and gone to heaven. Just then Satish Singh approached Prachi requiring a fax machine. As Prachi escorted him out the room, she turned around to see Milind and a smiling Tasha in conversation.
It was nearly 8pm the same day, when Prachi stopped by Aditya's office door. She had been working late and so had Aditya. "Good night.", said Prachi. "Are you leaving ?", asked Aditya. Prachi nodded and noticed that Aditya was watching the news. The big headline news seemed to be about Hollywood movie star Tessa Carter's upcoming nuptials with Indian businessman Uday Khanna. "God, presidential elections in America, unrest in Kenya and this is what counts as news.", said Aditya disdainfully as he swtiched off the tv. "The wedding is going to be in India. There is no escaping it.", laughed Prachi as she turned to leave. "Prachi, could you do me a favour ?", asked Aditya. "I have a dinner meeting, I'm already late for but I really need Milind to get these paper's and look it over before tomorrow morning.", said Aditya. "Hasn't he already left ?", asked Prachi. "He is staying at the penthouse suite tonight. Something about an early morning meeting. So, could you take these papers to him ?", asked Aditya. "Of course", said Prachi taking the folder even though she felt very unsure about intruding on Milind at the penthouse.
Prachi nervously knocked on the suite door. As soon as Milind opened the door, she hurriedly explained,"I'm sorry but Aditya needed me to give you this ...". She was about to thrust the papers into his hands when she noticed the shocked and guilty expression on his face. She took a closer look at him. His shirt was rumpled with some very tell-tale lipstick marks on his collar. She didn't need any further explanation when she heard Tasha say from behind, "Oooh, I hope that's the champagne." Tasha came into view, thankfully still fully clothed. "Panchi!", said Tasha in surprise upon seeing Prachi still standing in the doorway. "Prachi", corrected Prachi but still did not remove her eyes off Milind's face. Milind wished that she would look away or at the very least that he could look away. Disappointment was writ large all over her face but there was something else in her eyes. Something that looked like hurt. Prachi quickly regained her composure. "Aditya needs you to look this over.", said Prachi handing the folder to Milind. "Good night.", she added with the utmost civility to Tasha. Milind watched her leave but Prachi walked to the lift without once looking back.
As soon as Milind closed the door behind him, Tasha sidled up to him and put her arms around his neck. "So, where were we?", asked Tasha with a smile that made millions of men around the country go weak at the knees. Milind suddenly found himself immune. Milind looked at her, looked at the wavy brown hair, so different from the shiny black hair that he constantly had to stop himself from touching. Milind gently removed her hands from around his neck and said, "I don't think this is a good idea." "What?!", asked Tasha, understandably shocked. "I'm sorry but this isn't right.", said Milind. "You didn't feel that way a few minutes ago.", said Tasha. When Milind didn't say anything, Tasha got her coat and put it on. "It's that girl, Prachi isn't it?", she said shrewedly. "No", said Milind quickly. Tasha got her bag and kissed Milind on the cheek, "You are lying to yourself." Milind banged his head against the door as soon as he closed it behind Tasha. He knew of men who would have killed to have been in his position and yet he had let Tasha walk out the door, all beacuse of Prachi Shah's disapproving looks. Why did it matter so much, what she thought of him?
Prachi felt like a fool. Heartbreak over Ayesha notwithstanding, had she really expected Milind to live like a monk. "He is my employer. He is free to do whatever he wants on his own time. It has nothing to do with me.", Prachi told herself repeatedly as the lift hit the gound floor. Prachi stood in a corner of the lobby, trying to convince herself of her total indifference to Milind's personal affairs. When less than 10 minutes later, she spotted Tasha walk through the lobby and out the door, Prachi knew she was fooling herself. She wouldn't be so inexplicably happy to see Tasha leave, if she was that indifferent to Milind.
The next morning, the lift doors were about to close, when they suddenly re-opened and Milind got in. "So, he went back home.", thought Prachi. Milind looked at her. "Good morning.", said Prachi coolly. Detecting the frostiness in her voice, he said bluntly, "Nothing happened.". "I know", said Prachi calmly. Milind raised an eyebrow, "You know". "Well, you are not exactly her type.", said Prachi. Prachi couldn't believe she was actually talking to Milind in this way, but her jealousy and subsequent relief from the previous night had emboldened her in a way she didn't think possible. "Really!", said Milind, surprised to see this fiesty side of Prachi but was liking it nonetheless. "Well, you are very different from the Akash Mehta type, aren't you?", said Prachi with a seemingly sweet smile. Now it was Milind's turn to smile smugly, "Akash and I grew up together in the chawl, so I wouldn't be too sure about that." Prachi was luckily saved from having to come up with a reply by the lift doors opening and Aditya approaching them. "Tessa Carter's manager phoned. They want to book the hotel for the wedding.", said Aditya, inspite of US presidential elections and chaos in Kenya, looking more excited than any one had ever seen him look before. Prachi and Milind smiled at each other. This was going to be interesting.
Part 12
Pandemonium reigned outside the gates of the hotel. Looking out the window of the 3rd floor room, she was sharing with Archana, Prachi could see the crush of TV cameras, photographers and journalists camped outside the hotel. The hotel had little idea about the monster they would unleash on themselves when Tessa Carter and Uday Khanna had booked 2 floors of the hotel for the Indian leg of their wedding celebrations. America's sweetheart and the Indian, British educated heir of an electronics empire had already had a formal church wedding in Tessa's native South Carolina but they had arrived a few days ago in India for a Hindu temple ceremony, to be followed by a reception in the hotel. The entire operation was turning out to be a nightmare for the hotel staff. Prachi & Archana were on call almost 24 hours a day and with the difficulties involved in leaving and entering the hotel, had resorted to sharing a single room in the hotel for the duration of the wedding. It was 2 days before the wedding. "Ready to face another day of madness?", asked Archana. Prachi just laughed. Compared to Archana's job of catering to every need of Tessa's South Carolina family and Uday's British friends and Hussein's mammoth task of ensuring security, Prachi knew her problems in helping arrange the reception were trivial. Even if Guston, Tessa's French, highly-strung, overly theatrical wedding planner could test the patience of a saint.
Later in the day, Prachi found herself in the courtyard that lead out of the reception hall, as Guston enthusiastically unveiled to Tessa his vision of the table settings. "Gold overlays with yellow roses.", said Guston, a very slightly built, black haired Frenchman in his late 40's. "It looks wonderful.',said Tessa eagerly. Tess had confounded every one's expectations. Instead of a high maintenance, demanding movie starlet, Prachi found her to be a very sweet but also terribly insecure young woman. She was constantly looking to others for reassurance, be it from Uday or in this case Guston. Uday just then walked into the courtyard. With an arrogance borne out of his priviledged background, he had none of Tessa's sweetness and insecurity. He was a lot like the rich boys Prachi had grown up with. While they presented a highly polished front to the world, God only knew what lurked beneath the surface. So unlike Milind thought Prachi suddenly, where what you saw was exactly what you got. "Darling what do you think of this table setting?", asked Tessa. Uday shrugged, "Aren't you wearing orange?".Tessa looked at Guston nervously, "I'm wearing an orange outfit. Won't it clash?". Guston looked scandilised. "Babe, sort this out. Keith and I are going to play squash.", said Uday impatiently, kissed Tessa on the lips and left. Guston took a deep, dramatic breath and said, "It's no problem. We'll have orange azaleas instead of the roses." Tess beamed in delight. Prachi hated to burst her bubble but said slowly, "I don't think azaleas are widely available in Mumbai at this time of the year." Guston looked traumatised, "Mademoiselle Tessa, I refuse to work like this. My artistic vision is constantly being compromised." Prachi wondered for a moment exactly who was the bride. "Are you sure ?", asked Tessa, looking at Prachi beseechingly. "Prachi, do something about this guy before she starts crying again. I'm running out of Kleenax.", muttered Archana under her breath. "I know of a florist in Juhu, I will see if they can help us.", said Prachi.
Prachi walked out to the lobby to see Milind in conversation with Uday and his best man Keith Andrews. "So, are you sure the perimeter is secure? We have a 2 million dollar deal with a magazine. I don't want any Mumbai photo rats sneaking in and jeopardizing that.", dictated Uday. "A broken nose could also jeopardize your photos.", thought Milind. Uday had a tough time accepting that a streetwise Mumbaiker like Milind could actually own the hotel and it reflected in how he spoke to Milind. Milind on the other hand, had a tough time stopping himself from punching the living daylights out of smug, spoilt rich boy Uday. Prachi walking past and overhearing parts of the conversation, was alarmed on seeing Milind's furious expression. On seeing Prachi's worried look, Milind kept a hold on his temper and said curtly, "It's taken care of.". With that, he walked away. Prachi walked out the door and asked for a car. "I'm sorry Miss Prachi but all the cars have been taken by Miss Carter's family.", said the doorman. "Where do you need to go ?", asked Milind, surprising Prachi from behind. "Juhu, I need to go to a florist there.", said Prachi. Just then Milind, saw Uday heading back in his direction with probably more question about security. "I'll take you.", said Milind, "Let's just get the hell out of here."
As, they got further away from the hotel, Milind stopped looking so murderous. "At this time of the year? Impossible!" said the florist, when Prachi explained her predicament. "I thought so.", said Prachi resignedly. "Guston is not going to be happy.", said Prachi wearily to Milind when she got back to the car. "I'm hungry. Lets have lunch.", said Milind suddenly. "I can't, Guston is waiting for me to come back.", protested Prachi. "Guston doesn't pay your salary, I do.", said Milind and before Prachi could protest any further, had already started to drive towards the nearest beachfront restaurant. The restuarant was actually a small, college hangout cafe and servicable was probably the kindest description for it. But it didn't matter much to Milind and Prachi, as they hungrily tucked into their meal.
"Takes me back to my college days.", said Milind as he looked at the pool table in the middle of the cafe. "Aah, so you were one of those guys who should bunk lectures and sit in the cafeteria all day, playing pool.", teased Prachi. "And you were one of those girls who should sit in the library during her free period.", grinned Milind. "Well, I never learned to play pool, so may be, I was.", laughed Prachi. "It's not to late to learn.", said Milind, taking off his jacket and heading towards to the table. Prachi watched as he chalked up a cue. "You can either play spots or stripes. You can only pocket the black ball after pocketing all your other balls and who ever does so, wins.", explained Milind briefly when Prachi joined him at the table. Prachi watched as Milind took aim and pocketed a stripe ball. Milind smiled when he saw Prachi try to hold the cue properly. "Here, this is how you do it.", he said as he leaned over her and positioned her hands properly. Prachi could hardly breathe when she felt Milind's body pressed against hers. Milind quickly backed off, he couldn't remember the last time his heart had beaten so fast. Not surprisingly, Prachi completely missed the cue ball. After a few minutes, they regained their equilibrium and quickly got stuck into the game. Milind couldn't play badly even if he wanted to. Prachi managed to make contact with the ball but was still failing to pocket any. Milind was very close to winning, when Prachi finally managed to pocket a spotted ball. "I did it!", she said excitedly. Milind could feel his heart beat rise again when he saw her delighted smile.
Milind paid for their meal and as they walked back to the car, he suddenly said, "Lets take a walk out there.", pointing towards the pier. Prachi laughed, "You really don't want to go back, don't you?". It was turning out to be a beautiful Mumbai afternoon. Prachi felt more relaxed. It was good to be away from the constant craziness of the past few day. And as much as it scared Prachi to admit it, it was good to be with Milind. As Prachi and Milind walked out to the pier, Milind couldn't remember the last time he felt so at peace. Maybe it was just being near the sea or maybe it was Prachi's calming presence but Milind was too scared to figure out the answer, right now. They stood leaning against the pier railing in comfortable silence for a while, looking out at the sea. After a while, Prachi noticed the lowering sun. She looked at her watch. "It's past 4 'o clock.", she exclaimed. She hadn't realised how quickly time had flown by. "We got to get back.", she said but Milind seemed unwilling to move. "Come on, we have bunked enough. We can't hide out here forever.", she said laughingly, as she grabbed his hand and tried to pull him away from the railing. Milind pulled her back towards him and Prachi for the second time in the day, found herself pressed against Milind. "We really need to go back.", said Prachi softly as she looked into his eyes. "I know.", said Milind and let her go. It was well after 5pm when they got back to the hotel. "Aah, Mademoiselle Prachi, I hope you have found my flowers.", said Guston as soon as Prachi entered the lobby. "Not in India. Deal with it.", snapped Milind. Guston looked offended but wisely said nothing. Milind left and Prachi found herself reflecting on her day. She didn't dare to imagine, what the wedding had in store for her.
Part 13
The courtyard was full of guests sipping champagne under a twilight sky. There were flowers and fairylights everywhere. As tiresome as Guston had been, Prachi had to admit he knew how to organise a wedding. Everything looked beautiful and things were running fairly smoothly. The temple ceremony had concluded and guests were steadily arriving and awaiting for Uday & Tessa to return. Prachi was just directing the serving staff towards a new influx of guests, when she noticed Milind arrive. Milind and Prachi stared at each other from across the courtyard. Milind was breathless at the sight of Prachi in a yellow lehenga while Prachi felt herself blush at the sight of Milind in formal, black Indian attire. Milind started to walk towards Prachi. As if on cue,the DJ started to play Alicia Keys 'Like You'll Never See Me Again'
'If I had no more time ... No more time left to be here ...', Prachi could feel her heart beat rising as he saw Milind make his way towards her without removing his eyes off her face.
'Would you cherish what we had? Was it everything that you were looking for?', As Milind got closer, he thought, "She is the most beautiful woman here."
'If I couldn't feel your touch ...And no longer were you with me ...', Milind was a few feet away, Prachi looked down, she couldn't look him in the face but niether could she move away.
'I'd be wishing you were here ... To be everything that I'd be looking for ...', They was just a few steps apart when Prachi finally looked up into Milind's eyes and then ... "Prachi, I need your help.", said Archana, "Prachi, now!". Prachi felt herself being almost bodily dragged away. She turned around to see Milind also being waylaid by a guest. He looked back at her with a wry smile. Prachi smiled back and let herself be led away by Archana to the honeymoon suite.
"Right, start throwing.", said Archana as she handed Prachi a bowl full of rose petals. Knowing, how difficult Uday could be, Archana had taken to preparing the honeymoon suite herself. There were exotic flowers, burning candles, chocolates and incense sticks covering almost every surface of the room. It was undeniably beautiful and romantic but also somewhat suffocating. "I know, it's overkill.", sighed Archana, "But this is what they wanted. Prachi just laughed and continued throwing red rose petals on the bed. Suddenly, Archana hit her hand against head, "I forgot the champagne. Damn, I have to go back down to get it." Archana had already left and Prachi had finished with the rose petals, when she realised she didn't have the room disc key to get out. Prachi sighed and went and sat by the window seat that overlooked the Mumbai skyline, she just had to wait until Archana got back. Meanwhile Milind was in the courtyard with Hussein, when Hussein spotted a waiter leaving the courtyard with a bottle of champagne. "Where are you going with that ?", asked Hussein. "Ms Karthik wanted me to reserve it for the honeymoon suite. I'm trying to find her.", explained the waiter. "I'll take it to her.", said Milind. "Yes, sir.", said the waiter and quickly handed him the bottle. Uday and Tessa had just arrived and the crowd was thronging forward to congrulate them. Milind didn't need much of a reason to escape from there.
Milind figured Archana and Prachi were most likely in the honeymoon suite. Milind opened the door with his master disc key. Prachi stood up when she heard the door open. Her eyes widened when she saw Milind enter the room. Milind suddenly felt his throat go dry as he heard the door swing shut behind him. Sure, enough Prachi was there but there was no sign of Archana. He didn't say anything but raised the bottle as a way of explanation and went and put it in the ice bucket by the bed. "Archana just went down to get that.", Prachi hurriedly explained. She sounded nervous, even to herself. Prachi suddenly felt the room become unbearably hot and uncomfortable. She had to get out of there but she seemed incapable of moving and so did Milind as he stared at her from across the room. Milind had a vision of Prachi sitting on the bed, wearing a red sari while he ...The room suddenly went a lot darker, breaking Milind out of his thoughts. "What happened ?", asked Prachi anxiously. They could still see quite clearly, thanks to the numerous candles lit around the room but without a doubt, there was an electricity failure. "Power failure.", grimaced Milind. Prachi bolted to the door. "It's not going to open. The disc scanner won't work without electricity.", said Milind as he picked up the phone and called reception. Just then Prachi heard a knock on the door, "Prachi, are you okay ? The lights are out on this entire floor.", said Archana from the other side of the door. "I'm fine.", said Prachi as she looked at Milind. Archana left to see what more she could find out. Milind got of the phone, "It's just this floor. So, it should be sorted out soon." Prachi didn't say anything and shortly Archana returned. "Prachi, the electrician is here. He said it will be sorted out within the hour. I really need to get back to the reception. Are you sure you are going to be okay alone ?', asked Archana, still with no idea that Milind was also stuck in the room. Prachi was pretty sure she would have been okay alone, but alone with Milind, she wasn't too sure about that. But nonetheless, Prachi reassured her. "I'm fine.Go."
Prachi went back to sit by the window seat. Milind flopped down on a chair by the bed. The comfort level that they had established just a few days ago had completely vanished and niether could think of a thing to say. Both could sense a palpable tension between them. It wasn't very long before the burning candles and lack of air conditioning started to get to Milind. Prachi was thoroughly alarmed to see him pull of his coat and shirt and toss it aside. "What are you doing?", she stammered nervously as she looked at him in his vest. "I feeling hot.", said Milind simply. Prachi felt as if she was being put through some kind of test. Prachi grabbed a box of Belgian chocolates and started eating more out of sheer nervousness than anything else. "What are you doing?", asked Milind, smiling at her. "I'm feeling hungry.", said Prachi. "Well, pass some here.", said Milind. Prachi reclutantly took the box over to Milind. They stood facing each other. Part of her wished that he would stop looking at her so intently, part of her wished that he would never stop.Prachi's eyes widened in surprise as Milind leaned forward and slowly wiped her lip with his thumb. "You had some chocolate there.", he whispered. Prachi felt her entire body stiffen as Milind leaned in closer and softly kissed her on the lips. But it didn't take long for her to reciprocate. She felt herself melting against him. Milind tightened his grip around her waist and Prachi felt her hands slowly creep up around his neck.
Prachi suddenly opened her eyes when she sensed a flash of light. The electricity had returned. Milind and Prachi quickly broke apart, when they heard the door open. "Milind! What are you doing here?", asked an astonished Archana. "I need to go back to the reception.", said Prachi and hastily left the room, without looking at Milind or Archana in the face. "Long story.", replied Milind, still trying to clear his mind after what had happened. He quickly grabbed his shirt, left the room and tried to catch up with Prachi but the lift door closed before he could reach it. Prachi could feel her heart pounding, she was breathing deeply, trying to catch her breath, her thoughts were scattered in a million different directions. She had no words. She was terrified. The lift doors opened and Prachi took one last deep breath.
"I know this isn't an Indian custom but I couldn't resist.", said Tessa as she stood in front of the crowd, "So, here goes." As Prachi entered the courtyard, Tessa turned her back on everyone. Suddenly, Prachi saw a bouquet of flowers hurtling towards her. Prachi instinctively caught it and was confused to see everyone, turn around, look at her and applaud. Tessa came up to her, kissed her on the cheek and laughingly said, "Congrulations, this means that you are the next to get married." An already frazzled Prachi just looked at her blankly.
A few minutes later, Prachi turned around to see Milind approach her. Her first instinct was to run. "I'm sorry. I made a mistake but I promise you it won't happen again.", said Milind. Prachi still wasn't sure what she though about their kiss but she hadn't considered it a mistake. But looking at the contrite expression on Milind's face, it was obvious that he didn't consider it anything more than a momentary lapse in judgement. Prachi desperately trying to hold onto her pride, said cooly, "It's fine.". Milind's mind was in complete disarray. All, he knew at that moment, Prachi's indifferent, dismissive acceptance of his apology, showed that the kiss had not meant absolutely nothing to her and that pained him more than he cared to believe. 'So every time you hold me ...Hold me like this is the last time ...' Prachi and Milind watched Uday & Tessa on the dance floor, unable to look at each other. "I need to go.", said Milind abruptly. Prachi watched as he left. Prachi looked at the bouquet of flowers, she was still holding. No matter how much she wished it, it didn't look like Tessa's prediction would becoming true any time soon.
Part 14
Prachi looked at her computer screen bemused. "This can't be right.", thought Prachi as she refreshed the screen. Her bemusement turned to slight panic. The bank account set up for events was almost depeleted. Prachi hoped there was just some error with the banking online site. It was the barely the second week of the month and Prachi knew she had hardly touched the account for this month. The Indian cricket team was due to arrive later in the week to stay in the hotel during their upcoming Mumbai test match against South Africa. And the hotel would be hosting a charity auction during their stay. An auction that Prachi needed funds to organise. "Happy birthday", said Archana, coming in and kissing her on the cheek. "Thanks", said Prachi distractedly, as she checked the account transaction log. Her twenty fifth birthday had started well enough with her family making a fuss of her in the morning but it was taking a turn for the worse, as Prachi noticed huge amounts of money had been transferred to an account she didn't recognise. She had to speak to Aditya immediately.
As she passed Milind's office,Prachi tried as she had done for the last 2 weeks, to firmly turn her thoughts away from him. However the harder she tried, the more she ended up thinking about him. Not even Milind being in Bangalore for more than a week helped, she just missed his presence more. Prachi kept on failing to convince herself that she was just being foolish or that she was reading too much into her feelings for him. Prachi knocked on Aditya's door and entered. "I'm sorry, I'll come back.", said Prachi as soon as she saw Milind was also in the office. He was due back today but Prachi had only expected to see him much later in the day. "No, it's fine. I'm about to leave.", said Milind. Milind couldn't stop looking at her. While in Bangalore, she had haunted his thoughts constantly. He would find himself in the middle of a meeting, replaying their kiss in his mind or he would be driving through Banglore, wondering what she was doing. And now that she was right in front of him, she refused to even look at him, instead preferring to give Aditya her sole attention. Milind couldn't believe what was happening to him and he just wanted it to stop.
"There is a problem with the event's bank account. All this money has been transferred to this account, I don't recognise.", said Prachi and handed Aditya a printout of the account transaction log. Aditay frowned and Milind who was on his way out, turned around. "When last did you access the account ?", asked Milind as he looked over the printout that Aditya handed to him. "Four days ago, but in the last 2 days there has been these unaccounted for transactions.", said Prachi. "Bring me all your account files for the last 2 months and in the mean time, I'll phone the bank.", said Aditya. "Also, get anyone else with accounts to check their records.", instructed Milind, on his way out. By lunch time, it was established that only Prachi's accounts had been tampered with, while the bank was insisting there was no error with their records.
Prachi was suitably concerned as she sat with Milind & Aditya in Aditya's office awaiting the arrival of Padma Nair, the bank's forensic auditor. In her early forties, Padma Nair was a woman who didn't mince her words and always put the bank's interest first. "Why are there no survillence cameras in the offices ?", asked Padma. Niether Inder nor Milind had believed in monitoring their staff 24 hours a day. "There is no need for cameras as only staff can enter the offices with an access disk.", explained Aditya. "Does anyone know the password to your computer and accounts?", Padma asked Prachi. "No and I change them every month.", replied Prachi. "Shouldn't you be trying to find out whose account the money has been transfered to?", asked Milind. "The account isn't held at our bank, it will take a day or 2 to determine that. Anyway we first need to determine, if the bank even has any accountability in this situation.", said Padma. "Meaning ?", asked Milind irritably. Padma was about to reply when her phone rang.
"Okay, that's what I suspected.", replied Padma as she shot Prachi a look. "That was a call from our I.T department. The transfer of the money took place from a computer within the hotel's network.", explained Padma. Prachi had a sinking feeling as to where this was leading. Padma looked at Prachi sternly, "If no one except staff has access to these offices and no one except you know the passwords to your accounts, how did this money get transfered?". Prachi returned her look unwaveringly but she didn't have to say anything. "Prachi had nothing to do with this.", said Milind firmly. "Mr Mishra, if you look at the facts, it's the most logical conclusion to make.", said Padma. "But it's not the correct one. I agree there may be breach in the hotel security but Prachi had no part in it.", said Milind in a tone that brooked no further argument. Prachi looked at him gratefully. Inspite of the circumstances, she was unbelievably happy about Milind's belief in her innocence. "Well in that case Mr Mishra, I suggest you look into your security and I will try my best to find out who holds that account.", said Padma. "You do that.", said Milind.
Prachi heistated before knocking Milind's office door. She hadn't been alone with him since the wedding but she had to thank him for his support earlier in the day. Milind's heart skipped a beat when he saw Prachi enter his office, which just made him more determined not to let his face betray any emotion. "Thanks for believing me earlier.", said Prachi, stammering a bit on seeing Milind's unsmiling face. It had never occured to Milind for even a second to doubt Prachi. He may be having a tough time dealing with his feelings for her but by now he knew her well enough to know that, she was incapable of any such deceit. "I would have done the same for anyone else, I believed was innocent.", said Milind trying to keep his voice indifferent as possible. That stung Prachi a bit, she didn't want to be just any one else. But she supposed it was her own fault for reading to much into the situation. Milind being the fair minded person that he was, would probably have stood up for any of his other employees in the same way. Meanwhile, Milind had decided the only way he could deal with Prachi, was if he kept their relationship strictly professional. "Is there anything else ?", asked Milind coolly. "No", replied Prachi and left.
It was 5pm and Prachi was about to leave, when Archana dragged her to the boardroom. "What's this?", laughed Prachi on seeing the birthday cake, presents and the rest of the staff in the boardroom. "It's tradition around here for anyone's birthday.", said Archana. "Thank you, so much.", said Prachi as she hugged Anita warmly but instantly noted Milind was not there. Prachi was cutting the cake when Archana noticed Milind walking past and pulled him into the room. "Happy birthday.", said Milind quietly. "Thank you.", replied Prachi. Milind was about to leave, when Archana asked, "Aren't you at least staying for some cake?". "I have to go.", replied Milind. He looked at Prachi for a moment, inspite of himself hoping that she will ask him to stay. But Prachi had enough of him pulling her towards him one moment and the next moment pushing her away. "Well, we shouldn't keep you then.", said Prachi coolly. Milind left. At that moment, Prachi may have kept her pride intact but she couldn't say she was all that happy.
Part 15
"Hey bro, this place is unbelievable.", said Akash Mehta as he hugged Milind. "No more than you making the team.", replied Milind. Milind and Akash had come a long way from their chawl days. Milind may have made it big as a business tycoon but even that couldn't match the adulation Akash received as India's heartthrob batsman. The lobby was buzzing with people. The Indian team had just arrived and with them came their management team, various media outlets following their every move and not to mention the groupies and fans. It had been a while since Milind and Akash had last met. "So, how's your dad and sis?", asked Akash. "Great, Sukriti started her teacher training.", replied Milind, "So, how's our chances for the match?". "With me in the side, how can you even ask that?", grinned Akash. "Sure, you can stand up to those ...", but Akash was no longer listening to Milind. Akash had whiped his head around so fast, Milind for a second feared that India's chances may have just ended then and there with Akash breaking his neck. "Who's that?!", asked Akash. Milind turned around to see what had Akash so interested. It was Prachi, looking luminous in a pink salwaar kameez, talking to the Indian team manager, Aslam Dockrat. The expression on Milind's face turned murderous. Akash's reputation as a Casanova was not completely undeserving. "Man, does she works here?", asked Akash. But Milind kept silent, still grappling with his sudden need to beat a close friend to pulp.
Luckily for both Milind and Akash, an irate Aditya interrupted at that point, "Milind, we have a problem. They are playing hardball, they are not willing to budge." Milind and Aditya were in negiotiations to buy out a Goa hotel. "You are going to have to speak to Abrahams yourself.", continued Aditya. "What? Yeah, okay", said a noncommital, disracted Milind, peering over Aditya's head to look at Prachi. In the split second he had turned around to speak to Aditya, Akash had made a beeline for Prachi and was now in conversation with her. "Well, as soon as you can tear yourself away from Prachi, make sure you do.", commented Aditya sarcastically. This quickly brought Milind back to his senses. "I'll do it.", growled Milind but nonetheless headed straight over to Prachi & Akash instead to his office.
"This is Prachi Shah, she is the events co-ordinator for the charity auction tomorrow.", said Aslam Dockrat as he introduced Akash to Prachi. "I would really appreciate any memobralia you have, that you would be willing to donate.", said Prachi with a smile. "How about my bat that I scored a hundred at Lords with.", smiled Akash. "Really?", said Prachi in surprise,"Thank you, I'm sure we will get a very high bid for it.". "I'm sure you will.", said Akash with a lazy grin and an unmistable glint in his eyes. Prachi was a bit surprised by Akash's flirting with her but all other thoughts fled from her mind, when she saw Milind glaring at her. Except for Milind informing her that the rogue bank account had been closed before the bank could trace the owner, they had barely spoken in the past few days.
"Prachi, I'm still waiting for that report.", said Milind authoritively. "I left it with Anita this morning.", said Prachi calmly. "Well, I didn't receive it.", said Milind coolly. Prachi glared at him. "I'll see what happened to it.", said Prachi but before she could leave she turned to Akash and said politely, "Thank you, once again". Akash smiled broadly at her. Milind's look of pure fury did not escape Prachi, however Akash was oblivious. "So, is she is involved with anyone?", asked Akash as soon as Prachi had left. With an almighty struggle, Milind unclenched his fist and said, "Listen, she is not like your usual models and actresses. She is nothing like Tasha or Ritu.". "Hey, believe it or not, nothing happened with Tasha and Ritu and I were just having fun.", replied Akash. "Well, Prachi is not the just having fun type.", said Milind sharply. "I can sense that, bro. Listen, I'm in line for the vice captaincy. It's time I start proving I'm getting serious about things and with a girl like Prachi, I'm guessing you can't be anything but serious.", said Akash with a wink. Milind's control of his temper was rapidly slipping away and he was sorely tempted to make one or two things very clear to Akash with his fists, when Aslam signalled for Akash. "Listen, team meeting, I'll catch you later then.", said Akash.
By the time of the auction, the following evening, Milind had managed to cool down. He had even managed to convince himself he was worrying about nothing, as there was no way Prachi would be interested in a guy like Akash. Therefore, it was little wonder he was ready to explode when he saw Prachi laughing and talking with Akash as soon as he entered the hall. Akash was on a charm offensive and was regaling Prachi with tales of the West Indies. "If I knew that's what they were selling me, I would have refused.", said Akash with a rueful smile. "I'm sure you would have.", laughed Prachi. "Hey, I'm just telling Prachi about what to avoid buying in Jamaica.", said Akash, when Milind joined them. "Well, before Prachi decides to go off to Jamaica, I need to speak to her.", said Milind. "Excuse me.", said Prachi to Akash before leaving with Milind.
Prachi and Milind were standing in a corner of the room when the auction started. "And we will open the bid for Akash's bat that won us the test at Lords at Rs10000.", said the auctioneer. "I need the report redone.", said Milind. "Really, it's exactly the same as the last four I have done", said Prachi. Prachi knew exactly what Milind was up to. She would have gladly told him that she had absolutely no interest in Akash, if he only wasn't so stubborn and admitted that was the real problem. "Do I hear a bid for Rs15000?", asked the auctioneer, things were really heating up at the auction. "Well, I still need it redone. I found too many discrepencies.", said Milind. "Final bid for Rs20000?", exhorted the auctioneer. "Fine, I'll check it in the morning, unless you prefer I leave right now.", said Prachi. "No, I would prefer if you spent a little less time ...", said Milind, inadvertently raising his hand and pointing towards Akash in the front. "And sold to Mr Mishra for Rs20000.", roared the auctioneer." "What?!", asked Milind, jerking his head up confused. "You just bought Akash's bat for Rs20000.", said Prachi sweetly. "Dude, I would just given it to you if you asked.", laughed Akash as he joined them. Prachi unable to hide her amusement, smiled at Milind while Milind glared at her and Akash, fuming at how things were turning out. To compound matters, he could see a very angry Aditya head his way. He had forgotten to phone Abrahams. "If you want to close this deal, you are going to have to fly to Goa tonight.", said Aditya bluntly. The last thing, Milind wanted to do was leave but he knew he had little choice. "Fine!", said a reclutant Milind, glaring at Prachi one last time. Prachi stared back at him defiantly.
Part 16
"Come on Didi, ask him to sign it?", nagged Bobby. "I thought you weren't his fan.", retorted Prachi. "He saved us from the follow-on, who's not his fan?", replied Bobby. It was Friday afternoon and Prachi was about to go home. But the lobby was full of autograph hunters like Bobby, trying to get to Akash whose batting heroics earlier in the day may have just saved India from losing the test match against South Africa. Prachi hadn't seen much of Akash in the past few days since the match began and had heard absolutely nothing from Milind since he had left for Goa. Prachi had been glad for the respite from both men. However things looked set to get complicated again as Akash made his way over to her with a broad smile. "Akash, this is my brother Bobby.", said Prachi. "Hey man, great fifty.", said Bobby as he enthusiastically shook Akash's hand. "Thanks, were you at the ground ?", asked Akash. "No, tickets are sold out.", replied Bobby. "Well, maybe I can help with that.", said Akash as he handed Bobby 4 tickets. "Wow! Box seats, thanks man.", exclaimed Bobby as he examined the tickets. "I really like you to be there when I score my hundred.", said Akash looking directly at Prachi. Prachi looked at him uncertainly. She didn't want to be rude but she had no intention of leading Akash on. By now, Prachi knew exactly how she felt about Milind, even if Milind seemed to have no idea about how he felt. "Oh course, we'll be there.", interrupted Bobby before Prachi could reply. "Great, I'll see you tomorrow then.", said Akash as he turned to leave with the rest of his team. "Box seats, Didi !", exclaimed Bobby again as he marvelled at the tickets he was holding in his hand. Prachi just looked at him exasperated.
Milind returned back to the hotel the next day. He had been successfull in buying the hotel in Goa. His time away had also gave some him perspective, where Akash was concerned. He and Akash went back too far, for him to jeopardize their friendship. Unfortunately, he had no such clear perspective when it came to Prachi. Prachi was a subject, he refused to deal with. Milind was too scared to analyse his cauldron of emotions when it came to Prachi. It was far easier just to suppress his turmoil than have to deal with it openly. As soon as he entered his office, Milind found 2 tickets for the match on his desk with a note from Anita saying Akash had dropped them off. Milind feeling even more guilty, called up his father and decided to go for the match.
The crowd interrupted into cheers as Akash scored another 4. "Didi, he's hot, how can you not be interested?", asked Somwya in a whisper. Prachi was at the match with Somwya, Bobby and Bobby's best friend Atif. Prachi had confided somewhat in Somwya about Akash's flirting with her. "I'll be a distant memory by the next match.", replied Prachi, failing to mention the part about her being far more interested in her pig-headed boss. The same pig headed boss who was now standing in the aisle with his father looking for their seats. Prachi realised with dismay that there were 2 empty seats next to her. Milind's face darkened with anger as soon as he met Prachi's eye. Every good intention regarding his friendship with Akash got thrown out of the window. He suddenly wished Akash would get bowled out immediately. To hell with India saving the match.
"Prachi, beta what are you doing here?', asked Mishraji. "She and Akash are very good friends.", said Milind sarcastically as he took the seat next to Prachi. "Akash gave Bobby tickets as they were all sold out.", said Prachi talking directly to Mishraji, ignoring a scrowling Milind. After a few more minutes of Prachi completely ignoring him, Milind whispered, "Having fun?". Prachi turned and smiled falsely at him, "Of course, Akash is playing really well, isn't he?". "Cricket is not the only thing he is good at playing.", said Milind. "Meaning?", asked Prachi. "You are going to make a fool of youself if you think he is serious about you.", snapped Milind, unable to contain his anger and jealousy. He immediately regretted his words when he saw Prachi's pained expression. Without saying a word to Milind, Prachi got up and turned to Mishraji, "I have to go. It was very nice to see you again." And then turning to Somwya, she said, "I'll see you at home.". Ignoring everyone's confused looks and especially avoiding Milind's guilty one, Prachi turned and left.
Prachi was almost outside the stadium when Milind finally caught up with her. "Prachi, wait. I'm sorry I shouldn't have said that." Prachi was furious. She was tired of waiting for Milind to come to his senses. "What Milind? Just because you don't want me, means no one else should either?", asked Prachi angrily. "Is Akash what you want?", asked Milind now equally angry. "Milind, do you really think Akash is the real problem here?", asked Prachi wearily. Milind just looked at her, not sure how to answer. Not sure how to deal with his guilt and conflicting emotions. Seeing Milind unable to respond, Prachi turned and left. "Prachi, wait!", said Milind. But Prachi continued to walk away. Milind tried to follow her but just then there was a huge surge of people coming out of the ground for the lunch break. Milind tried to find Prachi in the crowd but he had lost her.
Part 17
The expression on Milind's face was stormy as he drove back home with his father. "Milind, why did Prachi leave so suddenly?", asked Mishraji sternly. Milind was at a loss for words. How did he explain the situation with Prachi to his father? But Mishraji proved more perceptive than Milind suspected. "You are very fortunate to have Prachi in your life. I hope you realise that before it's too late.", continued Mishraji quietly. Milind was tired of running away from the truth, especially since it was confronting him at every corner. "How can she?", asked Milind struggling to put his thoughts and feeling into words. "How can she what?", asked Mishraji. "How can I expect her to forgive me, yet alone care for me after everything I have done?", asked Milind painfully. "You have to ask her that but I do believe she cares for you.", said Mishraji. "How can she? After everything I did to her family, I would never be able to forgive someone if they did that to me ?", said Milind. "Well, she is very different from you and you should be thankful for that.", said Mishraji, smiling slightly. "I wish I could undo what happened with Ayesha.", continued Milind miserably. "Well you can't do that but it's not too late to still make amends.", said Mishraji sensibly. "How?", asked Milind. "Well, first thing turn around this car and and go apologise to the Shahs immediately.", said Mishraji. Milind did as he was told.
Premlata hurried to the door when she heard the knock. She was taken aback to see Milind and Mishraji standing outside the door. "Good day, Mrs Shah, sorry to disturb you.", said Mishraji, as an uncomfortable Milind stood slightly back. "No, no, please come in.", said Premlata hurriedly. Bobby, Somwya, Alaap and Dadi all looked up curiously as Milind and Mishraji entered. "Can I get you something to drink?', asked Premlata after a moment of uncomfortable silence. "No", said Milind, deciding to get straight to the point, "What would like you to do is accept my apology.". "Milind?", said Premlata confused. "When I found out that Ayesha married Neev, all I wanted and cared about was getting revenge. It didn't matter what I did and who I hurt. That was wrong of me, especially as it was your family who ended up paying for it the most.", said Milind, looking Premlata straight in the eye. "What you think you can just come here and apologise and everything is going to be fine.", burst out Alaap. "No, I don't expect everything to be fine but I will try my best to make things right.", said Milind, addressing Alaap directly. "Yeah, well you can start by by giving us back everything you took.", sneered Alaap. "Alaap, that's enough.", said Premlata quietly but firmly. "Milind, after the mistakes my husband made, I realise people don't always make the right choices but you can't be angry and hold onto the past. I believe what you are saying and I accept your apology for all our sakes.", said Premlata. "Thank you.", said Milind sincerely. Alaap still looked suspicious but Bobby and Somwya both had happy expressions on their face and even Dadi looked somewhat mollified. But Milind frowned as he looked at everyone in the room. "Where's Prachi?", he asked suddenly.
As it was a late Saturday afternoon, a pin drop could be heard in the offices but Prachi was oblivious to everything except for her anger as she furiously typed out her resignation letter. She was sure she would spend the rest of the night crying her heart out but right now all of her energies was focused on writing the most formal, stiff, professional resignation letter that had ever seen the light of day. Prachi didn't allow herself for even a second to doubt what she was doing. She had reached the absolute end of her patience with Milind and she wasn't going to be swayed by any indecisiveness on her part. Prachi printed out the letter and read through it once more as she made her her way to Milind's office. She turned the door handle, half expecting it to be locked but the door slowly swung open. She heard a dull crash as a chair fell to the ground. Quickly opening the door full, she looked in bewilderment at the man standing by Milind's desk. "Ramesh?!", said Prachi in utter surprise.
"What're you doing here?", hissed Ramesh. "That's what I was going to ask you.", replied Prachi angrily, quickly making her way towards the desk, "How did you get in?". "What you think I left this place without some backup discs and without any friends?", jeered Ramesh. "It was you. It was you, who transferred the money out of my account.", said a horrified Prachi. "What, did you think your'll could just get rid of me like that and I wouldn't make you'll pay.", said Ramesh, practically screaming now. "Well, you are not getting away with this." said Prachi determinedly as she took out her phone. "No, you won't.", said Ramesh as he lunged at Prachi, trying to grab the phone out of her hand. "Let go of me!", screamed Prachi as she tried to fight him off but was no match for Ramesh when he shoved her forcefully away. Prachi stumbled and felt a sickening blow as her head hit against the corner of the heavy wood desk. "Bloody hell!", said a panicked Ramesh as he looked at her lying on the floor. Without a second look, he turned around and fled from the room.
Prachi touched her temple and felt the warm blood. She had to get up but the room was spinning out of control and everything around her was darkening. She could hear the distant sound of a phone ring. She had to answer it before the blackness overwhelmed her. With an almighty effort, Prachi picked herself up slightly and grasped the phone that was laying on the floor next to her. "Milind", whispered Prachi as she looked at the caller id. But Prachi couldn't fight the darkness anymore as she slipped into a welcoming oblivion.
Part 18
Prachi winced with pain as she opened her eyes. Her head felt heavy and her throat dry. She looked around her. Nothing looked familiar until she saw the tousled head of hair that she would recognise anywhere laying to the side of her on the bed. 'Milind", said Prachi as she touched his head. "Prachi", said Milind groggily as he lifted his head of his arms. "Prachi!", he said more excitedly when he saw that she was awake. "Where am I?", asked Prachi weakly. "You're in hospital. Just lie back. I'm going to call the doctor.", said Milind as he buzzed the nurse. As soon as the doctor and nurse arrived, they shooed Milind out of the room in order to examine Prachi thoroughly. "She's awake.", said Milind as he joined everyone else in the waiting area. "Thank God.", said Premlata and everyone's relief was visible. After a short while the doctor came to speak to them. "She is going to have a vey sore head for the next days but except for that, she is going to be absolutely fine.", the doctor reassured them. "Can we see her?", asked Premlata. "Only 2 vistors for now.", said the doctor. "Go ahead.", said Milind to Premlata and Dadi. Even though he had refused to leave her side since he had found her in his office, he was suddenly nervous about approaching her, now that she was conscious.
"Maa, Ramesh!", said Prachi anxiously as soon as Premlata entered. "Don't worry. He has been arrested. Everything is fine.", said Premlata soothingly. "How?", asked Prachi. "Apparently, Milind had security cameras secretly installed. But you'll have to ask him everything.", said Premlata with a smile. Prachi was still trying to remember what had happened since she had confronted Ramesh. But only images of Milind assailed her. Milind finding her in the office, Milind in the ambulance with her, Milind telling her how much he loved her as he begged her to wake up. Prachi still wasn't sure if it was all a dream. "Where is Milind?", asked Prachi tentatively. "He'll see you tomorrow, right now you need your rest.", said Premlata. "Oh", said Prachi, unable to hide her disappointment. Maybe it was all a dream afterall.
It was very late the next day when Milind finally gathered the courage to visit Prachi, even though he had spent the entire day pestering Premlata and the hospital enquiring how she was. He had never been more nervous in his life than when he entered Prachi's room. It didn't help that inspite of her bandaged head, he still found her absolutely beautiful. "Sorry, I should have brought you some flowers.", said Milind. "That's okay.", said Prachi, looking at him curiously, he looked and sounded terrified. "Ummm, how are you doing?", asked Milind even more nervously. "Okay", said Prachi now laughing, he looked like 5th grader about to confess to his teacher that he hadn't done his homework. "Is there something you want to tell me?", asked Prachi smiling. Milind decided to take the plunge even though she wasn't making it easy by already laughing at him. "You know I love you, don't you?", he said a bit gruffly trying to mask his intense emotions. Prachi felt overwhelmed with happiness but she wasn't about to let him off the hook so easily. "I have my suspicions but I need it confirmed.", said Prachi teasingly. Milind smiled. "I love you very, very much.", he said, as he sat next to her on the bed. "Thank you.", said Prachi politely. "Thank You?!", said Milind as he grabbed her, "I have never been more nervous in my life and that's all you got to say!". Prachi put her arms around his neck and placed her forehead against his, "You know I love you too, don't you?"
Prachi spent the next few days in hospital and Milind spent every possible moment with her. He filled her in on how they had security cameras secretly installed, how luckily the hotel was the first place they checked when they couldn't reach her by phone, Ramesh's subsequent arrest, he was facing some jail time and finally they spoke about Ayesha and their families. Premlata had filled in Prachi on Milind's apology. "I'm not going to lie to you, maybe I did love her and I was hurt by what happened but I promise you it's absolutely nothing compared to what I feel for you. I only hope you can really forgive me for all that I did.", said Milind as he sat on the bed with Prachi in his arms. Prachi sighed, "I forgave you a long time ago since I was just as accountable." Milind kissed her head, looked down at her and smiled, "Forget the past?". "Forgotten", said Prachi as she snuggled against him. Just then the nurse entered with a bouquet of lillies. "Milind! No more flowers. There is already enough flowers here to make even Guston happy.", complained Prachi. "These aren't from me.", said Milind as he picked the card from the bouquet and handed it to Prachi. "Best wishes, Get well soon, Akash.", read Prachi. "Don't worry. we had a talk before he left. He said he sensed you really weren't interested and he told me that I'm idiot for not saying something sooner.", said Milind a bit ruefully. "I don't think anyone is going to disagree with that.", said Prachi. "Hey!", protested Milind.
It was the day of Prachi's discharge, she was waiting to sign her release papers when Milind came to pick her up. "Guess what? The doctor said I can come back to work next week.", said Prachi with a smile. "Well, about that.", said Milind looking a bit guilty, "You did resign.". "Milind?", said Prachi questioningly. "We had to replace you.", said Milind. "You gave my job to someone else. Who?", asked Prachi, shocked. "Guston, apparently he fell in love with India.", said Milind with a shrug. "You gave my job to Guston.", said Prachi in disbelief. "Everyone said he did a really good job with the wedding.", replied Milind. "You gave my job to Guston.", repeated Prachi slowly, wondering if the blow to her head had affected her hearing. "Don't worry, there's another job for you. You can actually think of it as a promotion.", said Milind glibly. Prachi raised an eyebrow, "Really! And what would that be?". Milind suddenly turned serious as he took hold of her hand. "My wife, the mother of our 3 children?", he said, looking at her intently as he slipped a ring on her finger. "Milind?", said Prachi softly as she looked at the ring and then back at him. "I know this isn't the best place or way to propose but I got to know, will you marry me?", said Milind anxiously, Prachi decided to put him out of his misery. "Yes", she said with a radiant smile.
3 Months Later
Milind did not remove his eyes off Prachi's face as he carried her into the honeymoon suite. Prachi however could not make eye contact. Downstairs their wedding reception was winding down. Sukriti, Bobby & Somwya were still dancing away. Archana was gossiping with Premlata and Dadi, Aditya was actually engaging Alaap in some civilised conversation but Milind had enough and had snuck Prachi away. Prachi knew she was going to start her married life with absolutely no concerns about her family. As an early wedding present, Milind had handed back the Shahs their old home and had transferred half of the hotel ownership to Prachi. "Prachi, promise me something.", said Milind solemnly. Prachi finally picked her head up and looked at him wide eyed. "Promise me there will be no drug busts or leaked newspaper stories or modelling scams tonight.", said Milind with a grin. "Or press conferences or bank audits or cricket matches.", replied Prachi, as she burst out laughing. But Milind soon silenced her laughter with a kiss.
