Introduction.

The characters, their backgrounds and relationships are almost the same as the show except niether Milind nor Ayaesha have any past links to Prachi. So, there is no illegitmate daughter or servant's son drama here.

Milind - A 28 year old businessman. Has spent the last 2 years steadily building his business as a middleman for hotels around Mumbai. Anything they need, he gets it for them. Ultimately aims to own those very same hotels.(Seriously, how Milind made his millions in 2 months is one of the most absurd things on a show full of absurdities. I am aiming for a slightly more realistic approach to becoming a millionaire.)Has moved out of the chawl and found an apartment of his own. His father passed away a year ago. Before Mishraji's death, he and Milind made peace, once he saw Milind taking life seriously and making a success out of it. (This means my Milind is slightly less bitter, angry and weighted down by the heavy chip on his shoulder.) Sukruti is studying in Australia and is having the time of her life. Milind is still carrying a torch for Ayesha but feels he has to make his mark on the world before he approaches her about a relationship.

Ayesha - Is making inroads as a model and is also getting work in some minor roles in soaps and commercials. Her mom is at a medical facility and Ayesha is living the life of a swinging single Mumbai girl with a place of her own. She and Milind are still close but their lives have been seemingly following very different paths in the last year or so.

Neev - Has joined the Shah/Shergil business and is a regular on the Mumbai party circuit. Prachi is still his best friend.

Prachi - Still reeling a bit from her broken engagement to Varun but has come to realise that she loves Neev. However Neev seems to have no intention of giving up the high life and settling down, least of all with her. In the meantime Prachi works as an interpreter and organiser for business conferences in her father's hotel. (Inder is very much alive in my FF.)

Chapter 1
'Neev, we can't start without him. My mother is not here and he is the next best thing, I have to family. I can't get married without him.', said Ayesha. Neev didn't want to argue with her, certainly not on their wedding day. Anyway, he felt gulity enough that he couldn't give her the grand wedding that he knew that she secretly wanted and that they had to resort to eloping. But Niharika refused to listen to a word he said about Ayesha. She did not want a two bit model with no family as her daughter-in-law and that was final. He turned around to their small gathering of friends crowding the roadside temple and shrugged.

Prachi could barely muster a smile, as Neev looked at her for reassurance. She was reeling. She had heard all about the gorgeous, wonderful Ayesha from Neev. But she assumed that like all his other flings, she would be old news within 2 months. She had not expected to receive a phone call this morning summoning her to their cladestine wedding. She felt dazed but she could recognise the fact that Neev did truly look like a man in love around Ayesha. It was a very hard reality to face that he never looked at her like that. Acknowledging that, Prachi returned Neev's smile. As much as her heart was breaking, it still gladdened her to see Neev happy. Just then she was jolted out of her thoughts by Ayesha exclaiming, "He's here!".

Ayesha hugged the tall man that approached the temple. The curly haired man seemed to be staring at Ayesha so intensely, Prachi wasn't sure whether he was going to strangle Ayesha or kiss her.Ayesha in her excitement, seemed barely to notice and dragged him to Neev. Neev shook his hand and said, "Let's get this show on the road." Milind was numb. It was as if everything around him was falling down and he was too paralysed to do anything. When he had met Ayesha a few weeks back, she had mentioned Neev. Just one of the many rich guys Ayesha met as part of her networking on Mumbai's social scene. Ayesha never took any of these guys seriously and even made fun of how Neev was bombarding her with flowers but now she was marrying him!

Milind felt angry with Ayesha but he knew that the anger was misplaced. He had nobody to blame but himself. He had spent so much time building a future for him and Ayesha that he forgot about the present. He never really told her how he felt. How stupid of him to expect her to wait around for him when he gave her no indication about his true feelings. As he watched Ayesha meekly follow Neev for the seven rounds around the fire, he never felt more lost in his life. As Neev tied the mangal sutra around Ayesha's neck, the demure girl standing directly opposite Milind across the mandir caught his eye. Her face reflected the same heart break that he was feeling.

Chapter 2
The cermony was over. Neev & Ayesha were hugging all their friends. Ayesha came to Milind, "Thanks for coming. You made up a bit for my mother not being here." For a second Milind spotted the vunerable girl that hid behind the tough exterior. All he could do, was put his hand on her head. Neev put an arm around Prachi's shoulder and said, "Thanks kiddo, I'll do the same for you one day." And then in a more serious tone, he said, "I know I shouldn't ask this of you but could you please check up on my mom later today. She likes you, maybe you can help her understand why I had to do this." Prachi felt herself dumbly nodding and then instantly regretting to what she just agreed to. Meanwhile Ayesha had a similar request for Milind. "What, you want me to speak to his family?", asked an astonished Milind. "Please Milind, think of it as my wedding gift. People listen to you, try to make them understand, I really do love Neev.", said Ayesha. Milind always found it difficult to refuse Ayesha and he could sense the sincerity in her words. "Okay, I'll see what I can do.", Milind agreed roughly. What the hell? He had nothing to lose by asking a couple of strangers for their son's hand in marriage to the woman he loved.

"He's my eldest son. You are supposed to be his best friend. How could you let this happen, Prachi?", wailed Niharika. Milind had been let into the Shergil residence only to be confronted by the sight of a overdressed, over made-up middle age women crying profusely and seemingly shaking someone by the shoulders. The rest of the family stood mutely around, having conceeded the center stage to the matriach of the family. Milind got a closer look at the girl in Niharika's clutches. She looked like a deer caught in the headlights. Oh great, it was Little Miss HeartBreak herself. Just then, everyone noticed the tall imposing stranger standing amongst them. Prachi's eyes widened in recognition.

"Yes, can we help you?", asked Pranay. "My name is Milind Mishra and I am a friend of a Ayesha." said Milind. Niharika looked furious but Prachi didn't think she was intimadating Milind one bit. " Ayesha is like family to me. Whether your'll accept as you daughter-in-law or not doesn't matter to me but if your'll intentionally do anything to hurt her, that will matter very much to me.", said Milind. The hint of a threat was unmistakenable. Niharika narrowed her eyes and asked him coldly, "What did you say your name was again?" "Milind Mishra", said Milind in a manner that left no one in any doubt that he felt his name meant something. "Listen, I don't know your'll nor do I have a problem with your'll. I'll like to keep it that way.", continued Milind. "Listen, I don't think I like what you are saying.", blustered Pranay. Milind looked at him coldly, "I said all I need to say, I'll see myself out." With that Milind walked out without a backward glance. Prachi also made an escape. She knew Inder & Premlata would be waiting for her with many difficult questions.

As Prachi stepped outside the gates of the Shergill house, to wait for Bobby to pick her up, she saw Milind leaning against his car, smoking a cigarette. Milind had kicked the habit a year ago but after the day he had, he felt a relapse was justified. "So, why didn't you tell him ?", asked Milind. Prachi wasn't sure if he was talking to her. He wasn't even looking at her but straight ahead across the darkening street. "Sorry, I don't understand.", said Prachi. frowning a bit. Milind turned around and glared at her. "Why didn't you tell your best friend that you wanted to marry him and become his mother's favourite bahu and have lots of sons just like him?", asked Milind, failing to keep the bitterness out of his voice. His eyes were boring into her and Prachi didn't think she could lie to him. But something inside her bristled. She had just witnessed the man she love marry someone else, then had to face the wrath of his mother and now a complete stranger seemed to hold her accountable for the whole sorry mess. "Why, didn't you tell HER?", snapped back Prachi. Milind was a bit taken aback. He had expected her to politely refute everything he said, not answer him back like that. "Because I expected her to wait for me, just like you were waiting for Neev." said Milind matter of factly. Prachi just stared at him. She could think of nothing to say. Certainly, nothing that would make either of them feel any better. Just then Bobby arrived and sounded the hooter for her to get into the car. "Sorry, I got to go.", mumbled Prachi and hurried towards the car. Milind stamped out his cigarette, got into his car and drove off into the night.

Chapter 3 - Two Months Later
"Well, I guess everything is in order.", said Inder. Inder looked over the contract one last time and shook hands with the young man standing across him. Inder recognised a bit of his younger self in him. Determined, confident and ready to take on the world on his terms. Milind kept his cool composure but inside he was jubilant. So far, he had only been able to deal with the 3 star hotels. Most 4 and 5 star hotels, were run by large consortiums, one of which was Shah Enterprises. And now he was standing across from Inder Shah shaking hands on a deal. Milind knew and respected Inder's legacy of raising from a lower middle class background to the upper echleons of Indian business.

As they stepped out of Inder's office, they met up with Ali, Milind's best friend who now worked as his
right hand man in the business. "We start next month.", said Milind simply. Ali grinned widely and shook Inder's hand. "We should celebrate.", said Inder. Milind and Ali had intended going back to the chawl and having a few drinks with their friends. Milind didn't think Inder would be quite up for that celebration. "Why, don't your'll come to my house for dinner tonight?", continued Inder. "Sure, we'll be there.", agreed Ali before Milind could say anything.

The Shah mansion was every bit as grandiose as Milind and Ali expected it to be. But it still had a warm and welcoming feel to it. Milind figured that was largely due to the pretty middle age women who was smiling at him. Inder introduced her as his wife Premlata. He then introduced them to his mother and 2 younger kids. Somuya and Bobby came as across as 2 good natured fun loving teens. Alaap, Inder's elder son seemed like the insolent rich college boy that Milind had, had one too many run-ins with in his life. "And finally, this is my Prachi." said Inder with obvious pride in his voice as he introduced them to his eldest daughter. Milind looked at her blankly. He had not been expecting this.

Niether Milind nor Prachi had ever expected to meet each other again. Their discomfort were visible on both their faces. "Prachi and I have friends in common.", Milind quickly explained on seeing Inder's questioning look. Everyone sat down for dinner. Prachi noticed that Milind could more than hold his own when discussing business and politics with her father. She had never seen her father and Neev engage in any such in dept conversion. Milind on the other hand was noticing Prachi's very warm interactions with her family.

It was only after supper that Milind got a chance to talk to Prachi. "I am sorry for what I said to you.", said Milind without any preamble. Prachi was taken aback and just replied, "It's okay, I am sorry for what I said also." They both looked at each other uneasily until Milind asked her if she had heard from Neev. He couldn't bring himself to take any of Ayesha's calls but he was still desperate to know if she was okay. "Neev is still working with his dad but Ayesha & him are living in her old apartment. I hope they sort out their differences with his family.", said Prachi. "You really mean that, don't you ?", said Milind, looking at her intently as if he was really seeing her for the first time. Meanwhile, Inder was watching them thoughtfully.
