With eyes that refused to blink, she thought about him and the promises he had made. She knew he always stood by his word and this was the first time something otherwise had happened.
Her brother had betrayed his sister who had committed suicide in shame. He had determined to take his revenge on her brother. He hadn't needed to wait long to trap her brother in his plan. Her brother lost his company, property and everything only to serve a jail sentence for he employed criminal tactics to save himself.
She had become homeless along with her mother. She was just a college going girl then. While she had begged the loaners not to put her house for auction, he had bought the house only to return it to her with respect. He had told her he didn't want to trouble her and her mother for the sins of her brother as he apologised to her mother. He also gave her back the company that her father had owned when he was alive, the same which her brother had lost. For a 20-year-old girl who didn't know the basics of business, it hadn't been trivial to control a company. But he had been there for her as her backbone, sometimes without her knowledge, sometimes making it obvious when it was impossible to hide. He had made sure she took the right step and backed her up if she ever went wrong.
When she had finally thanked him with all her heart, he had said it was his duty to rebuild something he shattered himself. She had apologized for her brother yet again. When she had bid him adieu, he had turned back and smiled. And the smile had told her she could never give a farewell to him from her life.
They had often met each other then, sometimes as business partners, sometimes as friends. Every meeting had generated covetousness in them to see each other yet again. With their meetings becoming more often, it wasn't too long before their hearts met, before their eyes refused to let go each other's sight. On what she still considered the luckiest day of her life, he had made her feel she was on the top of the world. He had told her how desperate he was to share his life with her forever.
There was no looking back after that. They had taken the blessings of her mother and his father and started their life together obeying a social norm. Her remorseful brother too had blessed them wholeheartedly and he was out of the prison by then.
He had made her so aware of her womanhood. He had made every cell in her body crave for him, her every breath take his name while he mingled his soul in hers. She had seen the world through his eyes while her happiness was his precedence. With him, she had understood the one feeling that had the whole world dancing on its tunes; she had known what they called as love as they lived and loved each other.
He had then made her life complete by decorating her womb with a baby and then another making their home sweet home, a paradise nest they all yearned to return to at every sunset. She had shared another facet of her life with him that of being a parent, raising their son and daughter.
In every moment they shared, he had made her one promise- a promise of being there for her always, a promise of being together in joys and sorrows and a promise to never let her go no matter what life may bring.
He had never broken that promise all this while. There were times life tested them, gave them challenges that made it nearly impossible for him to keep his promise. But he hadn't shaken a bit, he had stood by his words.
She couldn't comprehend how this had happened. How could he leave her alone and disappear like this? How could he decide to start a new journey on his own? How could he not think of what she would do without him? He hadn't given her a clue what he was up to.
She had questioned the invisible him every minute. She had questioned HIM too. None gave her an answer while her 5-year-old grandchild had asked her the same question she had asked infinite times. Where did he go leaving her behind?
It had been several hours; it had been a few days too. She hadn't found her answer. A morsel of food wouldn't go pass her throat for it wasn't the first crumb from his plate. A dream of sleep wouldn't bless her eyes for he had snatched from her the luxury of his arms.
That day she decided, she decided to play his true partner. What if he hadn't lived up to his promise? She knew she could always accomplish it. After all she was a part of him, his promises were her promises too. Her deeds would be his deeds too. Her soul was determined. She had sat on the rocking chair where he habitually sat. She had rocked on the rocking chair just the way he did. In a few moments the rocking stopped, so had her ties with the mortal world. She had joined him where he waited for her, as she fulfilled his broken promise.
