Chp 4

Prachi stood next to the massive dining table in her father's private suite, he stayed at his hotel in London as Prachi occupied the mansion in Watford. It was exquisite with French furniture a king size mahogany bed done in luxury sheets. Tastefully and eclectically decorated with a Victorian style oak table and chairs, hardwood floors and wool area rugs. Rembrandt was adorned by the walls and her mother's life size portrait hung over the fireplace. Large leather work comfort couches were spread beside the open windows Inder stood near the Victorian tiled fire place where a bright fire burnt in the grate. Taking a small sip of his scotch wine he felt her stand motionless behind him looking at the flames leaping happily eating the wood piled within. "Why did you slap Henry?" Inder had asked quietly. "Woh mujhey tang ker raha tha Mr Shah" He was irritating me Mr Shah Prachi had replied meekly it had been a rule that Prachi address him as Mr Shah and never as Papa which was Ayesha's custom. He could not hear the association from her mouth, sometimes Inder as would stare at her from afar his heart would lurch out to her but he would crush any tiny pang of guilt that seldom reared it's weak head in his heart. He was not cold hearted but it had certainly ceased to function the night Lata had died. He did not wish to shun Prachi but he could not accept her too, each time he chanced to look at her she would remind him of Lata. Prachi had inherited the same hazel eyes, velvety jet black tresses and soft flawless milky skin Premlata had. Even though he tried to block out the striking resemblance she held to her mother his mind would be invaded by the moments spent with Premlata and he'd go stark raving mad at his loss all over again. When Prachi was twelve she had contracted typhoid she was in Paris then, her headmistress had called him up informing him that the child's condition was crucial. The doctor had given her his last word it would be a miracle if she survived another night. Inder had been gripped with fear, a similar one he had felt when Lata had been wheeled in the operating unit that fateful December night.

He had booked a flight to Paris and in the next hour had boarded a private jet to France. Prachi had not known but when Inder had seen her lie unconscious in the sick unit of the school he'd been overcome with remorse. She was his daughter after all had it not been for him she wouldn't have graced the world in the first place. "Prachi" he had whispered gently holding her burning body in his arms but she had not registered anything neither his warm embrace nor his repentant tears that fell thick on her hair. Till she had regained consciousness he had stayed by her side kissing her repeatedly praying for her to make it but the moment she had opened her eyes he had left. Her eyes..... they spoke just like her mother's and the happiness they held on seeing him beside her tore his heart. Asking the matron not to disclose the details of his visit he had left as abruptly as he had appeared leaving Prachi to consider it a dream she had dreamt. Before he left he had met her for a mere five minutes then too he had stood glued near the doorway not attempting to converse or interact afraid that if he took a step forward he would crumble to pieces. "Tum jaanti ho tumhaari wajah sey uskey baap ki kitni bakwaas sunni pari mujhey" Do you know what rubbish I've had to listen from his father just because of you this time Inder's voice was a note louder his fingers tightened round the glass tumbler enraged. "Tumhari shaadi tey kerdi hai mainey Varun key saath kal woh tumhain dekhney aayega apney parents key saath tayyar rehna." I've fixed your marraige with Varun. He'll be coming with his parents tomorrow to meet you better be ready. Informing her he had gestured her to leave with a wave of his hand while Prachi stared at his broad back dejectedly. "Per Papa main to..." But Papa I she had tried to explain when Inder had turned around to deliver a cold hard glare to her that had left her blank and clueless. Her fate had been sealed by her father she should've known the choice to select a life partner would remain with her father too.

"Kiya bidu aaj kuch kaam nahin hai kiya?" What man you've got no work tonight? Ali had slapped Milind on the back jovially. It was nearly ten in the night Milind had just gotten over his responsibilities towards his helpless father. "Saala saara din ghoom ker bhi itna paisa nahin banta keh Baba ka ilaaj kerwa sakun.... woh doctor bol raha tha physiotherapy ho to Baba phir sey chal saktey hain, baat ker saktey hain" I keep roaming on the streets all day still I'm not ale to put together enough money to get Baba treated. That doctor was telling me if I paid for Baba's physiotheraphy he'd be able to move and talk again Milind had informed him sadly. It pained him to think that his father had been deprived of speech and use of his limbs altogether. It was not that he evaded looking after his father but at times the silence got too much for him to bear. All he ever got as a response to his ramblings from his father was a deluge of tears that made him wonder if he should stop conversing with him altogether .. Day in and day out he followed the same routine he'd leave at six in the morning scouring the streets for prospective passengers. Somewhere in the afternoon he'd return home to feed his father and change him not waiting to eat himself, sometimes he wouldn't have the money to buy food for two and that would be often. Late at night he'd return home to cook food clean the house and do the other household chores his friend Ali was overcome with sympathy for him. Ali and he had been friends since they were born diaper friends they would often joke good naturedly, Ali had been the one who had helped Milind get over his grief. Many a times Milind had sought solace in his company their favourite fad was to sit outside in the courtyard staring at the sky trying to count all the stars at a glance and then they'd have a jolly good time outdoing each other at it. The count starting from a few to a million and they'd end up laughing like mad accusing each other of cheating simple pleasures for simple people. His mother would sometimes cook food for Milind too and Ali would make him share it forcibly. Tonight too they both sat on one of the charpoi's placed in the chawl's courtyard feasting on rice and lentil soup the dessert being the main treat it was kheer a specialty of Ali's mother. Milind would sometimes request her to make it for him and she'd save henceforth to make it as a surprise on some extremely tiring and spent day for him. He had taken his father for his bimonthly check up that day and the doctor had repeated the same instructions he'd been giving him since the past six months. Each time Milind returned from the clinic he'd be equally repentant and dejected "Main kiya karun Ali chah ker bhi Baba key liye kuch nahin ker paa raha" What do I do Ali even though I wish to I cannot do anything for Baba he had sighed miserably. His father had been his pillar of strength in his time of need and now when he required his time and support he was unable to provide him with it. "Tuu tension kyun leta hai yaar kuch na kuch ker leingey" Why are you taking tension we'll figure something out Ali had tried to console his broken heart. "Kaisey karunga Ali kaisey?" How Ali how will I do it?he had placed a weary arm across his eyes to conceal the tears that would've spilled had he not closed them. They lay silent staring at the night sky peppered with a million stars blanketing the world in a never ending sheet of black. "Eik idea aaya hai Milind" I have an idea Milind Ali had sit up upright as he shook Milind's shoulder excitedly.

"Kaisa idea?" What idea? Milind had inquired confused at his sudden assault looking at him as if he'd lost his brain. "Woh Karan hai na apna..." That Karan he had paused dramatically causing Milind to glare at him irritatedly. "Haan hai to" What of him he had retorted "Woh keh raha tha aajkal stations or airports per buhut kam taxi drivers hotey hain, woh bomb womb phat reyley hain na iss vaastey. Dekh maut zindagi to Allah key haath main hai itna to tuu maanta hai" He was telling me there were very less taxi drivers at train stations and airports because of bomb scares. Life and death rests with Allah alone you believe in that right and Milind had averted his gaze. He and the Creator had too many differences to sort out and he wasn't ready to start doing the math that soon "Aagey bol" What next he had ordered annoyed at God's mention. "Yaar woh keh raha tha keh bhaarey per taxi chahiye dekh woh tereyko passengers deyga tuu usko commission dey dena... dono ka dhanda saaf. Or tereyko saara din savari dhundna bhi nahin pareyga bas seedha station jaana or waapis ghar." He was telling me he requires taxis on commission he could get you passengers you could give him the commission. You won't have to search the city for passengers then and would be back home soon. The idea was appealing atleast at a train station he'd be assured of passengers ready to board his taxi, instead of searching for possible travellers. "Hmm" he had mused aloud mulling on the idea the only problem was the metro was far from his dwelling and the airport further that meant he wouldn't be able to return during the afternoon to feed his father his lunch. "Per Ali Baba ko dopeher main khaana kon khilayega or saara din woh yunhi bister main.... yaar yeh possible nahin" But Ali who is going to feed Baba his lunch the whole day, he alone in the bed the whole day that's just not possible he had rejected the idea his father meant more than a few extra dimes he'd earn at his expense. "Milind tuu shaadi ker ley na yaar teri tension khatam, bhabhi aa jaayegi to kam az kam Baba kii chinta to nahin hogi tujhey" Milind get married atleast when you'r wife comes you'll be freed of your father's worries and Milind had screeched with laughter doubling over the rough ropes binding the charpoi. Howling in mirth he gasped "Bhabhi... saaley thobda dekha hai mera? kon kareygi mujh sey shaadi?" Have you seen my face who is going to marry me? he had managed wiping away stray tears that had flowed from his eyes in happiness or sorrow was yet to be determined by Ali. "Haan aasman sey aayegi na terey liye larki" Yes you'rs will come straight from the heavens Ali had fumed "Koi pasand hii nahin aati tereyko to." You don't seem to like any girl "Shayad aasmaan sey hii aayegi" Maybe she will come from the skies Milind had smiled watching an Emirates airliner zoom in the skies high above them sailing over the seas heading to London.
