SRK goes one up

A STAFF REPORTER

Calcutta, Feb. 3: Just like he had done with Don, Shah Rukh Khan seems to have won the KBC battle. At least if TAM results of Week One of Kaun Banega Crorepati are to be believed.

The launch episode of the Shah Rukh Khan-hosted Kaun Banega Crorepati on January 22 reached 23.3 million individuals. That is a cool 5 million more than the launch episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati Dwitiya hosted by Amitabh Bachchan (in picture). And if you are thinking of the increase in the TV-viewing population in the last two years, well, the TAM rating for Episode One is a strong 12.3.

Commenting on the mindboggling numbers, Sameer Nair, CEO of STAR Entertainment India, said: "We have met our three objectives for KBC with SRK — to ensure that STAR Plus continues to dominate viewers' hearts, to gain clear leadership in the 9 pm weekday primetime band and to ensure that the cricket World Cup does not dent our revenues."

Just to give an idea how well Shah Rukh's KBC has done, its third episode on January 24 was seen by more than the total people watching India play West Indies in Cuttack on Neo Sports and DD combined.

There are more firsts. In its first week, KBC reached 39 million individuals which is "the highest ever reach for a show in the first week in the history of Indian satellite television".

KBC has done a lot of good for STAR Plus alone. Among general entertainment channels, the first week saw an increase in its relative channel share to 55.9 per cent, from 37.7 per cent in the previous week. This was mainly at the cost of Zee TV's viewership, which was at par with STAR Plus, but could only manage a 21.5 per cent share in the KBC week.

So, even while detractors feel that there has been a fall in the TRPs since Week One, for the time being, King Khan seems to have frozen the debate on whether he would be able to slip into Big B's shoes.

It's a mad, mad rush for ratings after KBC SMALL SCREEN

In keeping with their newfound enthusiasm for entertainment, Headlines Today did a show called Star Power based on a survey that tried to gauge the brand value of movie stars. Aishwarya Rai turned out to be the most talented, trustworthy and sexy among all the female stars

S METIMES YOU can't help but feel sorry for entertainment channels. The KBC juggernaut has enabled Star Plus to gobble up 43 per cent of the weekly channel share (closest competitor Zee is way behind at 20 per cent and Sony is at a sad 10 per cent) — so what can the other general entertainment channels do except try and get back into the game by coming out with more new programmes?

Even as viewers remained hooked to Khan Ka Gyan on KBC, Sony introduced two new serials — Durgesh Nandinii and Jeete Hain Jiske Liye (slotted at 10pm and 10.30pm, after KBC).

The former has a village belle in the lead role, but not the kind of village belle we are familiar with — you know the sort I mean, who will sit on a bullock cart, swing her legs and eat ganna, while giving the gaon ka chhoras flirtatious sidelong looks. This one looks a bit like a comely pehelwan in a ghagra-choli.

The plot seems quite predictable: without going into the details, Durgesh Nandinii will leave her village and teach a well-deserved lesson to a bunch of evil citydwellers.

Does the serial look promising? Well — no escape — there are a couple of bad bahus and there's a sad and suffering saas too, but the Seeta Aur Geeta shades to the story make me optimistic.

Incidentally, having exhausted the Bengali-GujaratiPunjabi settings, Durgesh Nandinii goes into rustic Uttar Pradesh territory (village melas, people playing kabaddi, men in dhoti-kurta-gamchas saying 'sasura' etc).

Renuka Shahane of the 100watt-smile fame, returns in Jeete Hain Jiske Liye, Sony's other new offering. So far, it seems more of the same: weepy protagonist, scheming villainess, wimpish men… Just like Zee's still-new serial Maayka, which began a few weeks ago.

Humble fathers and virginal unwed daughters, secret marriages and filial duties, the sanctity of kanyaadan… I'm feeling leaden and exhausted even as I'm writing this.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Eklavya releases next week, so one can't escape the promotional barrage on our TV screens. But this time, it's a bit puzzling.

The director has done interviews with his star cast (Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Saif Ali Khan) and the same interviews are being telecast all over — on Headlines Today, Channel V, Set Max (maybe I've missed out on some other channels).

Also, why — given that the interview was being conducted indoors — were both Vinod Chopra and Amitabh Bachchan wearing dark glasses throughout?

Were they in disguise (to avoid hordes of fans who may have invaded the set, menacingly waving autograph books)? Or did they have bloodshot eyes (we certainly did, watching them on channel after channel)?

Maybe they thought it looked cool (it doesn't, it just looks very odd, watching someone talking at length and seeing black squares instead of real eyes).

In keeping with their newfound enthusiasm for entertainment, Headlines Today did a show called Star Power based on a survey that tried to gauge the brand value of movie stars.

Aishwarya Rai turned out to be the most talented, trustworthy and sexy among all the female stars; whereas among the male stars, it was expectedly a close call between Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan on most counts.

Meanwhile, the channel was also running a poll of its own: who is India's sexiest cricketer?

All this is deeply fascinating, I'm waiting impatiently for a series of fresh polls on India's most trustworthy and sexiest politicians. Just think of the candidates…

KBC ratings move up

Mumbai: Star India's programming weapon Kaun Banega Crorepati ( KBC) in its second week has moved up in the ratings. While in its debut week, KBC's ratings slipped day on day, the second week has seen ratings stabilise between the 8 — 10 television ratings (TVR) range. Most advertisers ET spoke to also seemed satisfied with the show's performance, and said that one would have to wait and watch to see if the show performs from now.

KBC moves up in RATe race

TAM Reports Higher 2nd Week Rating

Sonali Krishna MUMBAI

STAR India's programming weapon Kaun Banega Crorepati ( KBC) in its second week has moved up in the ratings. While in its debut week, KBC's ratings slipped day on day, the second week has seen ratings stabilise between the 8 and 10 television ratings (TVR) range. Most advertisers ET spoke to also seemed satisfied with the show's performance, and said that one would have to wait and watch to see if the show performs from now. Star would be safe if the show now managed to sustain its ratings going forward. Paritosh Joshi, president, advertising sales and distribution, was gung-ho about the show's performance. "The strong upward momentum that the show has established is reflected in its rating performance. We have been vindicated and the Cassandras who wrote off the show after the 1st weeks ratings must acknowledge that they called wrong. We believe they will continue upwards for a while as adoption grows and will have a number of higher jumps when we do specials. They will in any case stabilise at levels no lower than what we have seen in week 2," he said.

The second week ratings published by TAM reports a 8.8 TVR on Monday, moving up to 9 TVR on Tuesday. The show slipped on Wednesday garnering a 8.4 TVR, but bounced back closing with a 10 TVR on Thursday. "KBC has managed to become a programming success as it the highest rated show on television today. Whether the premium charged for the show is justified, is debatable. But if one accesses the first two weeks performance the 100% premium that has been charged seems okay," Nandini Dias, vice-president, Lodestar Media said.

She added that whether this kind of premium will be justified throughout the show's running would depend on whether the show can sustain its ratings.

However, Meenakshi Madhwani, media auditor, Spatial Access differs, "Undoubtedly, the show has managed a decent start as it is hovering between 8-10 TVR, but seems to have failed in meeting the expectations of advertisers, who were committed a 15 - 20 TVR. Since that has not happened, I'm sure that advertisers will look at a cost adjustment through bonus time given on the network as the channel will not reduce the outlays."

Countering Madhwani's comment, Joshi said, "We don't do rating guarantees on such things. In any case even if her hypothesis about a 15 TRP guarantee was assumed to be correct, this would have been basis the old TAM panel and not the extended one that only launched this year. Remember that the sponsorship deals were done in Dec 06. We saw that the launch episode 12+ GRPs we got delivered a much higher audience than KBC 2's launch episode's 19+ GRP. Interpolating from this, we can see that Meenakshi's alleged guarantee would be generally met."

Shah Rukh has brought wit and informality to KBC

By Arpana, New Delhi, Feb 13: Shah Rukh Khan has brought to "Kaun Banega Crorepati" warmth, wit and informality and cannot be blamed for dipping TRPs of a show that may have lost some of its novelty, say the film star's many votaries, some of whom are not even his fans.

Defending the game show that is now in its third season - the first two were with Amitabh Bachchan - viewers say comparisons are inevitable, and sometimes unfair.

"I think Shah Rukh makes an excellent host for KBC. I'm not saying that he's better than Amitabh, because both are very different. But Shah Rukh, I feel, connects more with the participants and the audience... he makes the show very informal," says Kalpana, a young marketing professional who confesses to not being a Shah Rukh fan.

"You take an instant liking to him though you may not be a diehard Shah Rukh fan. I just love the way he hugs people - almost like the 'jadoo ki jhappi in Munnabhai'," Kalpana told IANS.

According to an audience study by Optimum Media Solutions, the media specialist arm of Mudra Communications, only 44 percent of respondents watched all the first three episodes of KBC3, 25 percent watched only the first episode and 30 percent watched two episodes.

What the study doesn't say is that when KBC was launched in 2000 it was the first programme of its kind. The sheer novelty of a quiz show and the enormous prize money gripped viewers who catapulted Amitabh, then a fading superstar, to a super host.

However, when the same Amitabh returned with the second innings of KBC, TRPs were half that of the first season.

The TRP study did not however take into account the fact that news channels had begun packaging their best programmes during prime time - when KBC was on - and included hefty doses of entertainment as well, providing stiff competition to the quiz show.

In fact, TAM (television audience measurement) ratings reports have been under a lot of scrutiny for their authenticity.

The figures are conflicting.

Despite the confusion over the Conditional Access System (CAS) in Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata, during which many households went without satellite TV, the show has done an impressive 15+ Television Rating (TVR) in Delhi and around 9 TVR in Mumbai and Kolkata.

Said Kamini Jain, a homemaker: "Shah Rukh is not responsible for the low viewership. He is a great host and engages with the audiences. He is charming and witty, but the problem is that the sheen has worn off. In the first season there was great anticipation because nobody had seen a programme like it."

Added student Nimisha Dean: "Each brought his particular screen strength - of informality (Shah Rukh) and formality (Amitabh) - to the KBC counter."

"Audiences don't want an Amitabh clone. Any KBC host has to have his or her own style. If Amitabh did a good job so can anybody else. He can't be bigger than the show and if the show's TRPs are falling then the show needs to pull up its socks, and not keep replacing the host."

It's an oft-repeated story on television. Sony TV's "Indian Idol" had audiences going hysterical in the first season, closely following each contestant. The second innings saw TRPs dip substantially.

"The format of the 'KBC 2' wasn't interesting; hence the TRPs fell. The same has happened with 'KBC 3'. People come to see Shah Rukh, but they don't enjoy the format. So Shah Rukh can't be pulled up for a drop in TRPs," said a Mumbai-based media analyst.

The programme is drawing the young too, and mostly because of the superstar's drawing power.

"My nine-year-old daughter Rajeshwari enjoys KBC because of the way Shah Rukh presents it. She finds it more interesting compared to Amitabh's. Earlier, she disliked KBC but she now eagerly looks forward to the show," said Namrata Dutta, Rajeshwari's mother, from Kolkata.

"You can't have an apple-to-apple comparison. It's like comparing India's GDP with other countries'" said Ajay Vidyasagar, executive vice president of STAR India.

KBC 3 creates new record

AL CHOUGULE
Posted online: Friday, February 16, 2007 at 0000 hours IST

Following its cracking opening-week performance, KBC 3 with ShahRukh Khan as host, has reached 47 million viewers in the second week, which is ten million more than the show's first week reach of 37 million individuals. The show opened with 12.3 TVRs and for the first week it delivered an average TRP of 9.7. For the second week, according to TAM Media Research data, KBC got an average TRP of 9.1. In comparison KBC 2 which was a weekend show had opened with 19.75 TVRs and reached 18 million individuals.

"These are historic numbers," says Star India's Vice-president Ajay Vidyasagar. "In the history of satellite television in India no show has delivered such eyeballs and achieved such widespread reach in just two weeks." Vidyasagar says KBC 3 is a much bigger success and apart from the content the ShahRukh Khan factor has clearly swayed the mass audience in its favour. "It is a sign of good content winning, maturing of audience in the cable & satellite homes and the increased reach of satellite television besides of course SRK effect which is showing clear signs of picking up further in coming weeks. People are beginning to love him for his warm, breezy, funny and tongue-in-cheek humour and style of anchoring," says Vidyasagar.

What's more, in two weeks spread over eight episodes, KBC has also racked in Rs. 24 crores in advertising revenue. Besides raking in mega bucks in ad sales, the show has also taken STAR Plus' 9 to 10 pm slot to a new high. Before the launch of KBC it was a neck-to-neck fight between STAR Plus and Zee in the 9 to 10 pm slot with STAR's channel share at 17 per cent against Zee's 16 per cent. In two weeks the game show has helped the channel increase its share from 17 to 31 per cent while Zee's share has gone down to 14 per cent.

Ever since the first week's TRP figures were released by TAM on Friday last week, there has been a constant comparison between SRK's KBC and that of Bachchan's KBC 1 and KBC 2. The comparison is clearly aimed at gauging whether SRK's KBC is a hit or flop over that of Bachchan's two seasons. But such a comparison is not only unfair but also unjustified simply because the whole market reality and reach of satellite television has undergone a sea change in the past seven years.

Much water has flown under the bridge between July 2000 when the first edition of the show was launched and January 2007 when the third season of the show with SRK opened. To understand the TRP numbers in proper perspective one needs to understand the cable and satellite television's growth in terms of reach, market, audience profile and time spent on shows as well as the changes in the size of the sample size, geographical spread and methodology used by TAM to calculate TRP numbers.

For instance, between 1997 and 2002 the panel size (number of PeopleMeters) was 3200 but post- National Readership Survey (NRS) 2002, the panel size was increased to 4800 covering all cities, regions and towns with one lakh-plus population. Post-NRS 2005 which had thrown up drastic changes in market reality, the panel size has been increased to 7000 PeopleMeters, covering 151 cities from the earlier 73.

In 2000 there were 25 million cable and satellite homes. KBC 1 which opened with 10.7 TVRs was watched by about nine million viewers. In 2005 there were 45 million cable and satellite homes and KBC 2 reached 18 million viewers in the opening week. Today there are 65 million cable and satellite homes and KBC reached 37 million viewers in the first week and 47 million in the second week. "There is no denying that KBC 3 has got more eyeballs but that's also because the reach of satellite television has increased substantially, nearly three times the number in 2000," says TAM Media Research's Corporate Communication Manager Siddhartha Mukherji.

According to Mukherji, comparison is based on individual perception. "Comparison was bound to happen because KBC was synonymous with Bachchan. The first week was a testing time for Shah Rukh. It took him some time to warm up and connect with viewers who were used to watching Bachchan as the host," says Mukherji. "But the industry was interested in knowing how SRK's KBC opened and whether it is a hit or flop. There are 100 factors that determine TRPs which in turn determine the fate of a show and one week is too short a time to pass a definite verdict. But people were in a hurry to judge it." TRPs, according to Siddhartha, are determined by reach and time spent. "But there is no doubt that KBC has reached more viewers," he adds. Thus when it comes to getting eyeballs KBC 3 has scored a clear victory over the previous two seasons of the show.

Feel like TV stars, with little help from Star TV

New Delhi, March 5 (PTI): Television viewers, who wish to walk, talk or look like their favourite stars, may get to fulfil their desire using Star TV's merchandise based on popular programmes, including KBC-III and other soap operas.

The broadcaster is in the process of licensing merchandise from the game show Kaun Banega Crorepati-III, which would allow viewers to do everything that the show's host Shahrukh Khan does, save his mannerisms.

"By the second half of this year, Star will come out with product line based on the popular game show KBC," Star TV Senior Vice President (Licensing and Merchandising) Nannette D'sa said.

She said the merchandise could include apparel, published material, games, CDs, DVDs, upholstery etc, for which the partners are yet to be finalised.

The company, has, however, sealed licensing agreements with some major retailers for merchandising of its popular serials like 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi', Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki, 'Virasat' and 'Karam'.

"We have tried to create a concept called 'Star Parivar' and tied up with Portigo Furnishings and Creative Mobus for which the marketing and distribution would begin in April this year," Nennette said.

Some of the other companies that Star has signed agreements include, Lilliput, Saregama, Trio (Canada), Popular Prakashan and Excel Videos for distribution and marketing of a range of products like apparel, homeware, jewellery, furnishing, DVDs and books form Star TV shows with high TRP.

The company hopeful that the merchandise business would serve as a healthy revenue stream.

"The channel is lending the use of its 'brand' for a royalty ranging from 7-15 per cent for selling products," D'sa said.
