KBC 3 fares better in ratings

BS Reporter / Mumbai January 24, 2007

The first episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati 3 (KBC3), hosted by Shah Rukh Khan on Star Plus, got a rating of 5.35 from aMap, a TV rating agency.

The rating system that was set up in 2004 tracked the viewership (age group 4 plus) of KBC 3 in the Hindi speaking states such as Rajasthan, UP, MP, Maharashtra and Gujarat among others.

The aMap analysis shows that KBC 3 opened with a viewership share of 24 per cent, which was much higher than the 12 per cent share of the two serials (Virasat and Karam Apna Apna) on Star Plus that it replaced.

aMap's rating system is different from that of its rival TV monitoring agency TAM. "Last week, Star's highest rated show Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi had a TVR of 4.5 in our system. KBC has performed better than that," says aMap chief Tapan Pal.

The aMap data show that the viewer retaining power of the programme was very high. This means that though its viewership dipped during commercial breaks, almost all the audiences came back to the show after the break. Among the 20 brands that were advertised during the one-hour show, Motorola's Motophone was the most watched ad on the show.

Star India sources, however, say that aMap rating is not widely accepted. "Wait for the TAM data and you will know that we have started with a bang. Over the duration of the 52 episodes, our average television rating will not be less than 18," he added.

Shahrukh Khan's KBC 3 debut draws strong ratings

Indiantelevision.com Team

(23 January 2007 11:30 pm)

MUMBAI: Shahrukh Khan seems to have cast magic on the ratings as he played host for the first time in the game show Kaun Banega Crorepati, replacing megastar Amitabh Bachchan.

Putting all anxiety to rest for the broadcaster Star Plus, KBC 3 opened with a market share of 24.36 per cent in the Hindi speaking segment of NWE (north, west, east) India, according to aMap's overnight TV rating system.

In comparison to the previous Mondays of 2007, iin which Star Plus garnered 12.4 per cent, this is not only a much larger share but almost double of the average ratings.

The actual number of viewers that were reached by KBC 3 in NWE India is 9.16 million. On an All India Level 10.29 million people were reached. And with Tamil general entertainment channel Star Vijay also adding up the audiences, 11.3 million people were reached on an All India level.

aMap highlighted a key trend of the programme on its opening day that indicates that 'King Khan' managed to retain the viewers after every break taken. The ratings kept on increasing after each break, and the last sequence got the highest ratings.

The show managed a jump of 91.5 per cent for the ratings per cent of Star Plus and almost all Star channels and genres got impacted due to the show.

In fact, 1.3 million people switched on their TV sets just to watch KBC, in NWE India. In terms of SEC, SEC A and B got higher numbers than the others. The ratings show that the more affluent target groups watched a lot more of KBC. Target groups like graduates, businessmen, self-employed professionals got the highest numbers.

Additionally, people living in small households, four and below, got more ratings than people staying in households with five more people.

Also, among the 20 brands that advertised on the show, Motorola's Motophone advertisment was rated the highest.

Analysts are, however, cautious, saying that the ratings have to be watched over a longer period to arrive at any conclusions.

King Khan gives KBC III a jumpstart

SONALI KRISHNA

TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 24, 2007 01:07:37 AM>

MUMBAI: Star Plus's gamble to bring in matinee idol Shah Rukh Khan as its new host for its popular game show Kaun Banega Crorepati may have been hotly debated. But the first set of viewership data put out by aMap, the television measurement agency, shows that King Khan's star power is very much intact.

On Monday, KBC III opened with a 5.35 television rating, which is almost double the ratings that programmes have in the prime 9 to 10 pm slot over the last three weeks. (A television rating point refers to the number of people watching a programme as a percentage of the total TV viewers universe).

In fact, Star Plus's channel share doubled from 12.4% to 24.36%, reaching nearly 9.16 million cable and satellite owning households in Hindi-speaking towns with above one lakh population.

So did King Khan's star power rival Big B's magic touch? The current set of data put out by aMap doesn't allow for such comparisons at an all-India level because aMap expanded its reach only after KBC II took off last year. But the data across three cities - Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata - clearly shows that Big B is so far well ahead of the race. Last year, KBC II generated 9.5 TVR in the city of Mumbai, whereas KBC III clocked 6.3. It's the same story across Delhi and Kolkata. In Delhi, this year KBC III delivered just 2.5 TVR compared to 6.8 TVR last year. While in Kolkata, the TVR this time was just 2 as opposed to 5.4 in the Bachhan era.

Yet KBC III has clearly managed to have a ripple effect in the 10-11 pm slot as well increasing the average ratings of 4.1 TVR to 4.6, and the channel share for the slot went up from 20.9% to 23%. KBC also managed to stave off Zee TV's strong revival in the 9 to 10 pm slot for the past three months. Zee, which had clocked an average a rating of 3.1 TVR, saw its ratings dip to 2.75.

Media experts were quick to point that the battle for eyeballs had only just begun. Said Mindshare-Fulcrum national TV buying head Amol Dighe: "It's a decent start, and if the show has managed to double the slot rating, I think the job is done. However, it is now critical to see, that for how many weeks Star is able to sustain the ratings. The drop in Zee was expected, however, the impact on the channel seems marginal."

Spatial Access media auditor Meenakshi Madhwani said: "What is interesting is that there has been a significant increase in channel share, but in terms of ratings, it is quite a mediocre start for KBC standards. The effect it has had on Zee is also not very dramatic, and the first few episodes, typically get in numbers as a lot of sampling takes place. Post the first week, one would be in a position to objectively rate the performance of the show." aMap is the only overnight television rating system that provides multi-dimensional TV viewership data. aMap claims that it is the first in the country to give yesterday's ratings today, not just by demographics, but also by ownership, language spoken at home and many other parameters.

Though the aMap data provides some early indications, most advertisers and media planners are likely to wait till next week when TAM, recognised as the industry's measurement currency, publishes its own viewership data. That's when the big debate between Big B and King Khan's star power will be finally settled.

Special: Shah Rukh's KBC opens with 12.33 TVR: TAM

agencyfaqs!
NEW DELHI, February 3

He gave it his best shot, but surely, it's not an easy task to get into BIG B's boots. 'KBC 3', hosted by Shah Rukh Khan, could not match the viewership ratings of Amitabh Bachchan's 'Kaun Banega Crorepati'.

In comparison to Kaun Banega Crorepati Dwitiya's opening figures of 19.75, Shah Rukh's KBC could only garner a TVR of 12.33 on January 22 (Monday), when the show first hit the screen (C&S, 4+, HSM).

But unfortunately for STAR India and King Khan, even this figure could not be sustained and subsequent episodes witnessed a noticeable decline. On January 23, the TVRs went down to 10.44, only to further decrease to 7.36 on January 24.

However, on January 25 (Thursday), the show saw slight increase in viewership, garnering a TVR of 9.24.

In the three metros – Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata – the viewership figures were even poorer. In these cities on the first day, the show garnered a viewership rating of 11.26, but declined in the next two episodes. It got a TVR of 9.1 on January 23, and 6.03 on January 24.

In Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata, the opening figures of Bachchan's 'KBC 2' had been 18.52.

However, 'KBC 3' has done some good to STAR Plus. The week it aired 'KBC 3' (Week 4, 2007) saw an increase in its relative channel share to 55.9 per cent, from 37.7 per cent in the previous week (Week 3, 2007) among general entertainment channels. This was mainly at the cost of ZEE's viewership, which in Week 3 of 2007 was at par with STAR Plus, with a channel share of 37.6 per cent, but could only manage a 21.5 per cent share in Week 4, 2007.
