'I want to move away from soaps'
7 Jun, 2007 l 0000 hrs ISTlAfsana Ahmed/TIMES NEWS NETWORK
On her 32nd birthday today, television's Queen Bee, Ektaa Kapoor, talks to PT exclusively about life, love and marriage.
Happy birthday greetings are in order, because Ektaa Kapoor turns 32 today. It is not a lovely age to be, regrets television's Queen Bee, as she heads to Tirupati to seek Lord Balaji's blessings. She's at the top of the world, but still ferociously hungry to conquer it, and this quest leaves her with no time for life. In a candid chat with PT, Ektaa speaks her heart out...

How's life at the top?

I am depressed that I am 32 today. It's just a mindset that I am at the top. I have been working non-stop for the past seven years, and it's only last year that I got back my life. But yes, the higher you go in life, the more insecurity becomes your constant companion. I have no choice but to work harder. Otherwise , life is pretty settled and chilled out.

Your soaps have mindless and bizarre gimmicks. Do you laugh at them too?

Yes, I do believe that entertainment is all about tuning in with your imagination. And television is entertainment.

It's said you are going from entertainment to reality shows?

Yes, in a joint venture with Sanjay Gupta, we are coming out with a mega reality show that will be far removed from what you've been seeing on TV. It's an original concept, combining television, films and reality shows. I believe success comes from moving away from your comfort zone. This year I want to make a mark in television again, but moving away from soaps. I want to explore all genres of TV. I will do shows that are not my forte.

Are you vindictive with your 'discoveries ' when they leave you?

Oh, wow! I love this. I feel like Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada . But, jokes aside, my philosophy is simple. Respect the company and it's contribution to your growth. I don't easily encourage people who have betrayed me to come back. I value loyalty. It's a twoway process. As far as Iqbal Khan's issue goes, it's not me who asked Star TV not to work with him. It was a joint decision taken by Star and my company. Anyway, it's sorted out and I gave Iqbal my go ahead. I am personally fond of him.

Where does love and marriage fit in your busy life?

Honestly, nowhere. For me, love and marriage are two completely different things. I was in love three times in the past. Well, I am not talking about it. Now, my focus is work, and when the time comes, I will get married. It's very difficult to find somebody who'll marry me, and not Ektaa Kapoor. My personality and my famous temper will be a huge deterrent.

Who's the richest of'em all...

Much like their Bollywood counterparts, making big bucks is all a day's work fror TV stars. t2 gives you a lowdown on some of the highest paid television actors and the approximate amount they rake in for a good day in office...

Smriti Iraani commanded a staggering Rs 1 lakh for Kyunki(and there were 20 episodes a month). Things went wrong for TV's highest paid actress when she demanded her fee be tripled. Ektaa Kapoor promptly bumped Tulsi off.

Saakshi Tanwar has discovered that it does pay to be a Balaji loyalist. Kahaani's Parvati bhabhi reportedly takes home a cool Rs 45000 per episode.

Shweta Tiwari's fee is rising with every generation leap that Kasautii takes. The actress who made Prerna a household name now commands Rs 35000 per episode.

Ronit Roy has come a long way from being a flop movie hero to India's highest paid male television actor. The boy from Bengal, says soap sources, pockets a cool Rs 10 lakh every month from every serial he is in. At last count, Ronit had four serial in his kitty.

Ram Kapoor is Balaji's current favourite. The man who has made Jai Walia the darling of millions of women viewers gets paid Rs 25000 per episode. But that surely is on its way up.

Peek-a-boo!
Ekta Kapoor's recent choice of clothes has us puzzled.

It's not that she's got a bad body so why she puts on dowdy clothes to hide her body is beyond us.

That apart, she seems to have a serious problem wearing innerwear.

Once again, the Balaji czarina is without the helpful support, instead resorting to 'nip tucks' to cover up.

Did someone not tell you that it could be seen, Ms. Kapoor?

Cezanne in hospital
By: Vickey Lalwani
June 9, 2007

The actor was operated upon for stomach ulcers; is recuperating in Lilavati hospital

All's Not Well: Cezzane Khan
Cezzane Khan (Anurag of Kasautii Zindagii Kay) is in Lilavati Hospital (Bandra). The actor was operated upon on Wednesday for ulcers in his stomach. His brother Sohail and his mother are presently with him.

Says a source, "Owing to this hospitalisation, Khan's entry in Ek Ladki Anjani Si (Sony) might be delayed.

The producers (Shreya Creations) and the channel were very excited about Khan's entry, but they'll have to wait until he is fine to report on the sets."

Scene stealer

Misha Gautam (Producer cum Creative Head) confirms Khan's illness and says, "I've been to Lilavati and he had a stomach infection sometime back.

The infection got acute and operation was essential. I don't know the details but I'm going to have a talk with him and his doctors tomorrow."

However, Gautam asserts that Khan's entry in the show will take place on June 14 as scheduled. "We have shot the entry scene with him. But we might have a problem for Monday's episode (June 18).

I have shot a few scenes with a body double and only his back will be shown. Let's hope that Cezzane recovers soon.

It won't be taxing for him to shoot in the initial stages as we'll need just a few close-ups," Gautam says. Khan will play Dhruv Mehra who will have a telling effect on the lives of the estranged Ananya (Sai Deodhar) and Nikhil (Shakti Anand).

Birthdays and bums
HAVE you ever heard of a birthday gal being late at her party? Soap queen Ekta Kapoor did just that, trooping in post-midnight at Aurus, with loyalists like Ronit Roy in tow. Two cakes were waiting, one for her 32nd birthday and the other to mark the success of Shootout At Lokhandwala, a JV of Kapoor and Sanjay Gupta. Gupta's gang of boys was in full attendance: Vivek Oberoi, Rohit Roy, Sikandar Kher, John Abraham and Manoj Bajpai. Gupta cosied up to his no-more-estranged wife Anu. Bummer Vivek, Manoj and John sported the same haircut.

Ranjib Mazumder

Recently, Mita Vashisht became a laughing stock on the sets of Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii. While shooting a scene, the actress fell into a make-shift fountain. In the ensuing confusion, Tina Parakh jumped into it too, to rescue Mita.

Mita, known for her antics, goofed up big time while shooting at a studio at Saki Naka. A crucial sequence showing Parvati (Saakshi Tanwar) shooting her daughter Shruti (Tina Parakh) was being shot that time. Mita was supposed to look on, standing behind Tina. While the scene was being shot, Mita fell into the make-shift fountain. She was completely drenched, and the unit had a good laugh at her.

Mita Vashisht
The reason for Mita's blooper was an interesting one. Mita, apparently, has a problem even if anyone points a finger at her, let alone a revolver. Thus, when Saakshi pointed her revolver at Tina, Mita (standing behind her) began to feel jittery. In her nervousness, she ended up falling into the fountain.

When contacted, Mita said, "I just couldn't tolerate a revolver being pointed at me. Moreover, the floor was all wet and slippery. The fountain was nearby and I ended up falling into it. But, I continued shooting after that too."

Mita was all praise for her co-star Tina. "When I fell, there was enough uproar to scare the unit members. But, Tina was sweet enough to jump into the water to rescue me. It was a funny experience and everyone had a good laugh over it, free of cost," she said.

Fresh appeal

Twenty-somethings are the flavour au courant of television

Alaka Sahani

PLOTTING revenge against the Walias can wait. Bani, of Kasamh Se, is celebrating her success in HSC exams. With the serial from Balaji's stable propelling Panchgani's 18-year-old Prachi Desai to telly stardom, studies had taken a backseat for a year.

But the onscreen mother of two isn't complaining about bartering teen fun for fame even as she packs her bags for a

10-day shoot in Turkey. Neither does her family. "We always wanted her do something different," says mother Amita.

Prachi isn't an exception. The heady combination of fame and lolly (six-digit pay packets for some) has several 20-somethings (like the leads of Kayamath, Jay Bhanushali and Panchi Bora, Pulkit Samrat or Lakshya of Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Deepti Devi of Parivar —Kartavya Ek Pariksha) taking a plunge into television ignoring the killer schedule lore. With production houses churning out serials with the regularity of brushing teeth, and soaps adopting the 20-year leap format, it isn't difficult if these young ones are equipped with right chutzpah. In fact, a number of NewGen characters of Kasuatii Zindagi Kay and Kyunkii are college kids.

What makes these actors' task easier is a search for "fresh faces". "Ekta (Kapoor) prefers taking new faces. They don't come with any baggage or the label of another character. So it's easy to mould them," says Nivedita Basu of Balaji Telefilms. Echoes Ashwini Yardi, head of programming of Zee: "New faces bring in a freshness which viewers love. It's not so much about their age, than their acting talent. With the number of daily soaps increasing, there is scope for such actors too."

"Freshers can commit and give time. However, if the programme demands a veteran, we won't compromise," adds Basu. Interestingly, many of them happen to be from smaller towns. Take the case of Prachi, Ghar Ki Laxmi Betiyaan' s lead Twinkle Bajpai, who comes from Lucknow or Banoo Mein Teri Dulhann's Divyanka Tripathy from Bhopal. Twenty-two-year-old Divyanka is a star in Bhopal, among couch potatoes she is famous as Vidya. Needless to say, she's enjoying every bit of it. "I'm having a great time in Mumbai, the set is like my extended family," says Twinkle, all set to buy a house in Mumbai next year. That will be another accomplishment for the 21-year-old, in addition to her new Honda City.

However, Twinkle, who came to the limelight with Zee's Talent 2005, like Neha Bamb, also 21, hasn't been able to complete her degree.

They might have missed out on academia but TV has given them much more. "I feel so grown up," says Neha. "I don't mind the hard work as long as it gives me money." Despite a monthly 25-day schedule, Twinkle claims, "I'm not missing out. I can reach out to so many while many youth of my age are struggling to find success."

Gitanjali's Pet Love

Maya (Gitanjali Tikekar) of Karam Apna Apna has 13 cats and 3 dogs as pets in her house in Pune. She says having a huge house and a loving family ensures that her pets are well looked after.

"I have 13 cats in my Pune house. We have a three storeyed bungalow at Sahakar Nagar in Pune so there it is easier to take care of them. I have a huge family in Pune and my brother and sister don't mind taking care of them. We have a huge garden so it's really easy to take care of them. We have some male and female cats. We have also employed people to take care of them. However, I think cats are independent pets and they do their own work. Therefore, they hardly need any special care," says the actress.

And it's not just the actress who is the pet lover of the family - her entire family loves having them around and enjoys taking care of them. "I think the love for pets is in my blood. I do not even remember when I brought my first cat in my house. I can only remember that from my childhood we have had cats at home. My sister is a veterinary surgeon and she decided to become a surgeon only because of them. Bringing them here is just impossible as I stay on the 11 th floor and I'm also busy shooting. From all of them Shambhu is my favourite cat. He is very big and nice. All of them have names. Apart from that, I have three dogs. A Dalmation, a Chiuaha dog and a stray dog."

"We have adopted all these cats and none of them are gifted. Pets always give you unconditional love and that feeling is amazing. It is a theory if you love them they will also love you more than you will. Whenever I go to Pune, they come to me and start rubbing themselves against me. Therefore, each moment I spend with them is a memorable moment for me," she says fondly.

Gitanjali has done serials like Kasautii Zindagii Kay in which she played a highly popular negative role.
