Fitness and health: Vikas Sethi

Vikas Sethi, who stars as Abir in Kyunki... and Prem in Kasautii Zindagii Kay, is determined to keep himself in shape. Though he does not get as much time as he used to, to work out, there is one thing the actor will never lose focus on- his abs!

'I have the tendency to put on weight but I don't stop myself from eating.'

I eat boiled eggs, a slice of bread and a glass of milk for breakfast. I basically eat everything and don't limit myself. I have the normal ghar ka khanna and I prefer eating my dinners early by 9 or 9:30.

I have a tendency to put on weight but I don't stop myself from eating anything because I work out hard enough to maintain my body. I work out everyday so I don't mind. I don't eat excess or oily food. I eat everything made at home.

I used to work out a lot before. I was really hard core with the weight training but now because I'm so busy I've cut it down. I am more into cardio now. I go to the gym in my building and do about 45 minutes of running everyday. Then I swim for about 15 minutes. Swimming is great because it exercises most body parts.

Right now I don't have the time but I would play badminton earlier and cricket every Sunday.

'I would never let my stomach go!'
For me, the ideal body is looking fit and being healthy- that's it. Your stomach should not be out. Only then can you say that you are fit! I'm not saying that you have to have bulging biceps or a huge chest but your body had to be proportionate. I just want to look like a fit man who is healthy.

I love my stomach. I wouldn't let go of it for anything in the world. I can deal with my shoulders going down or any other body part not being perfect but my 6 pack is something that I am very proud of. The thing with abs is that you have to concentrate carefully on them to get a 6 pack. If you swim and run you're working on your entire body and taking care of it but for a washboard stomach you have to run and do crunches. I run for my lower abs and I come back and do crunches.

I'm not very happy with my calves. It's damn difficult to exercise them! If Arnold Schwarzenegger said they're the most difficult to work out then you can imagine how tough it must be.

From podgy teenager to TV heartthrob
I started working out a long time ago when I was 17 years old. I used to be fat! Though I didn't care then but once I started I began to enjoy it and I continued. When you are fit, whatever you wear looks good on you. People see you wearing just a normal tee shirt and jeans and they'll comment on how great you look. If you are fat then everything you wear goes out of shape. You don't get the right kind of clothes and feel very self conscious. Nowadays everyone wants to be fit. It is a decision made by people to eat right and exercise.

My body has changed drastically since I started working out. From being a fat teenager I had a chiseled body with 6 pack. Then there came a time when I wasn't getting the time to work out and I became fat again. Now I enjoy having an athletic body. I don't pick up weights anymore. I just do a little free hand exercising and running.

Vikas is keeping up with the new blood in the industry
The young guys in the industry today all have great bodies. Today everyone is conscious and taking care of their bodies. I think that Mallika Sherawat has a good body. I saw Kareena Kapoor the other day and she's also gone fitter lately. Even Esha Deol has a great body. Everyone is working out and no one is afraid to show off their body anymore.

    Moving out of Ekta's shadow

    Cezanne Khan

History: Kasauti Zindagi Ki is another signature show from the Balaji stable. When casting for the character of Anurag Basu, Ekta chanced upon this mild mannered and soft-spoken actor called Cezanne Khan. Cezanne had previously appeared in the popular television show Hasratein. Kasauti made Cezanne a household name and an actor to reckon with. He soon became one of the most popular actors with Balaji. The Rumour Mills: Rumour has it that Cezanne was fed up with the show and even more frustrated after being linked to all the women on the show. One of his exes Shweta Tiwari even referred to him as a 'dog' on an interview in Balaji's lifestyle show, Kandyfloss. There was a camp working towards Cezanne and a feeling of redundancy was beginning to creep in on the sets for him. Cezanne also believed that he has a good chance with bagging interesting film offers following his star status on television. After being asked to make multiple age leaps, he finally packed his bags. He was not even given a "send off" party, which is tradition for Balaji and its actors. The Queen Speaks: According to Ekta Kapoor, Cezanne wasn't really needed on the show any more as the men would be marginalised on Kasautii following the new storyline.

Where are they now: Supposedly, he was signed opposite TV beauty Amna Shareef for a Sony show, but that fizzled out. On June 11 this year, Cezanne made his entry in Sony TV's Ek Ladki Anjaani Si as Dr Dhruv Mehra.

    Television's highest-paid actors

    Name: Shweta Tiwari
Claim to Fame: Kasautii Zindagi Kay
    Character: Prerna
Her fee, industry talk has it, is Rs 35,000 per day
This pretty commerce graduate from Mumbai's Burhani's College has won the adoration and applause of critics and fans alike as Prerna in Kasautii Zindagi Kay.

She has always believed in herself and been very vocal. Today, she finds it strange that most people know her more by her screen name than her real name. But after six years of screen time, we are not surprised.

    ---------------------------------------

    Television's highest paid actors

    Name: Ronit Roy
Claim To Fame: Kasautii Zindagi Kay/Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi
    Characters: Rishab Bajaj/Mihir Virani
His fee, industry talk has it, is Rs 1 million a month
After Ronit's first Hindi film Jaan Tere Naam did well, he was sure life would be one big party. Sadly, fate had other plans and all his other films bombed. A few years later, there came an offer for an eight-week cameo in an upcoming show, Kasautii Zindagi Kay. But even Ronit would have laughed if you told him that his cameo as Rishab Bajaj would catapult him to superstardom and make him a household name. Today, Ronit aka Rishabh Bajaj plays characters most actors can only dream of. Just when one thought it couldn't get any bigger or better, Ronit stepped into the shoes of Mihir Virani, a character who, in Ronit's own words, has raced ahead of his Kasautii character.

Today, Ronit runs a super-successful security company, is the highest-paid male television star and a permanent resident in the hearts of millions of people.

Suraj, an automobile engineer, is the film's protagonist. This is an absolute new theme in Bollywood," says Raja.

U RVASHI DHOLAKIA plays the part of Komolika, the vamp in Kasauti Zindagi Kii, so well that her own mother once forgot she was nice, harmless Urvashi and yelled at her for her on-screen machinations. "I still remember, when I kid- napped Anurag and Prerna's son Prem on TV, my mother yelled at me the minute I reached home. She went ballistic yelling, 'Arre, aur kitna bura karogi? Tumko yehi sikhaya tha kya?' I didn't know how to react," she says. But Urvashi's mother wasn't to blame. Her daughter plays the char- acter so convincingly after all. Komolika is a special vamp who has a special background tune re- served all for herself. Nikaa… goes the soundtrack every time Komolika walks in, gives one of her trademark devious looks or finishes plotting an- other of her schemes to split Prerna and Anurag. Her adas leave men breathless, her nakhras make women see red. Her plunging necklines, heavily made-up eyes and scarlet red lips shout her sexuality. And with all that sensuousness perfectly in place, she schemes and plots breakups, kidnappings and murders. Komolika is happy when everyone else is not. "TV had never seen anything like her. She is sexy, bitchy, scheming, cal- culating and devious, yet there is an innocence about her. She knows what she wants and how to get it. Her body language, her eyes, and just about everything about her has a sensuality and connivance. She was the first of her kind. And others followed suit. I guess that is her plus point," says Ur- vashi. Four years after Komolika sizzled on screen no one – not the produc- ers, nor the actress – can fathom why this vamp has a fan following to rival a heroine's."I am stunned. He- roes and heroines are okay but to be a vamp and still be popular is some- thing rather strange. In fact, kids are fascinated by me. I think they are more intrigued with the music that comes with me. But I honestly see no reason why people should like a vamp and try to ape her style state- ments," says Urvashi. The actress reasons that the char- acter's packaging – styling, dressing and make-up – has a lot to do with her popularity. But the creative team of the serial feels Urvashi's excellent portrayal of Komolika is responsible for the char- acter's popularity. "The brief for the role was very clear. We wanted a character who was a home breaker, a man stealer, basically a woman whom men would salivate after and women would hate. Urvashi fit in perfectly. While the character is the first of its kind, we can't take away the fact that Ur- vashi adds a lot of her childish, yet sensual nakhras to the character. That gives the role a lot of lift," says Doris Dey, creative director, Kasauti Zindagi Kii. Urvashi is no stranger to the small screen. She made her first TV appearance as a child artist nearly 23 years ago and is happy playing the bitch on TV. "I have played all possible charac- ters. From the kid sister to dumb girlfriend to trusting wife. But I have never got the kind of response for those roles that I got for playing a mean vamp. It was as though after all these years, people suddenly sat up and took notice and said, 'hey, she is worth it'. Komolika did what per- haps no other character could do," she says. A random call by Ektaa Kapoor, the creative director of Balaji Telefilms, landed Urvashi the role. "I had done two other serials with Ektaa before. I just went to her office when she called. She looked at me and said, 'You are my Komolika, the next big thing on TV'. I took up the role but had no clue that what she said would come true," reminisces Urvashi. And how does it feel when people in real life react to her as Komolika, the home breaker, just like her moth- er did? Doesn't it hurt? "I don't think I can get away from a character who is so popular. Why me? Most people who play larger than life characters get stuck with their on-screen images. It takes a lot of time to get out of that character but you manage. The idea is not to get stuck yourself," she smiles. "I am just acting. This is my job. I may be scheming on screen but in real life I am just a normal girl." Urvashi also feels she has been in the industry long enough not to take things like this too seriously. "I am an actress and doing my job. For me it doesn't matter whether people call me an angel or a witch. My satisfac- tion lies in the fact that even as a vamp, I am convincing enough for people to notice and hate me. At least they aren't indifferent."

Shewta Tiwari's husband booked for misbehaving with woman scribe

MUMBAI: Police have filed a complaint against television actor Shweta Tiwari's husband Raja Chaudhary for allegedly misbehaving with a woman journalist.

The incident occurred when Raja Chaudhary was being interviewed by Janice Sequiera, a television news journalist, in the wake of a complaint lodged against him by Shweta with the Malad police on Saturday evening.

Shweta has accused Raja of harassing her under the influence of alcohol.

Raja lost his temper when Janice asked him whether he was drunk. He roughly pushed the journalist to make her smell his breath, according to the complaint lodged by Janice with police.

A publicity stunt, an ego clash or a frustrated husband? What really went wrong in Shweta Tiwari and Raja Chaudhary's marriage

Playing to the gallery? Shweta Tiwari and Raja Chaudhary at the launch of a toothpaste brand last week
Only last week, Shweta Tiwari made a public appearance for a product launch with husband Raja Chaudhary and daughter Palak (they have modelled for the toothbrush company as a family). The couple seemed at peace with each other.

However, things changed dramatically over the weekend after it came to light that Shweta (better known as Kasautii Zindagii Kay's Prerna Bajaj) filed a non-cognisable offence of assault and forcefully taking away their daughter Palak against Raja at the Malad police station.

According to Shweta's cousin and telly actor Raj Logani (Saathi Re), "The last time I met didi was two months back. I've been flooded with calls from friends and relatives but no one really knows what went wrong.

I've known Raja for a long time and he never seemed the sort to harm Shweta. But he is extremely possessive of her."

When asked about Raja's tryst with alcohol, he says, "Yes, he enjoys a drink or two once in a while, but some people have implied that he uses drugs. He would never do that. Raja is very much in control of himself even after a few pegs of alcohol."

Saying that the fight could be a mere ego clash, Logani says, "For a long time, Raja was known only as Shweta Tiwari's husband, but after Nach Baliye 2, things changed. I refuse to believe that he has asked her for money. It's probably that he is frustrated that his career is not going anywhere."

    No room at home

When HiTLIST visited Shweta and Raja's home Shiv Shakti in Malad, it was locked. Inquiries in the neighbourhood reveal that ever since Shweta filed the complaint, the doors have been locked.

It is learnt that Shweta has shifted to a relative's house. Further inquiries reveal that Raja spent the night at Privilege Inn Hotel, just a few blocks away from their home.

Sources at the hotel confirm that Raja checked in on Saturday along with his brother and parents, soon after Shweta filed the complaint. According to the hotel source, "They occupied two rooms (407, 409) and looked disturbed.

Soon, some police officers arrived at the hotel to question Raja."
The family left the hotel soon after and were said to be leaving for their hometown, Meerut.

Incidentally this is not the first time, a police complaint has been filed against Raja for bad behaviour. Two years ago, actress Dolly Bindra had alleged that Raja "outraged her modesty" at a party.

In an FIR filed with the Juhu police station, the actress accused Chaudhary of violent conduct in an inebriated state. The incident occurred at a party thrown by actor Anuj Saxena to launch his production house, Maverick.

    All for the film?

Raja Chaudhary makes his debut as a producer with the Bhojpuri film Hamar Saiyyan Hindustani. He is also producing a Hinglish film titled My Second Honour.

A source reveals that the police complaint could be a publicity stunt by Shweta and Raja to promote their film.

"Raja's Bhojpuri film is due for release soon. It could very well have been orchestrated by Raja to attract attention as the film's plot is similar to what is happening right now."

    Prerna provoked!

Shweta Tiwari plays an independent woman in Kasautii Zindagi Kay. In real life, however, she is a victim of domestic violence. She filed a complaint yesterday, but industry insiders say that problems with husband Raja Chaudhary have been escalating over the years

Shweta Tiwari has filed a complaint against her husband Raja Chaudhary, accusing him of domestic violence.

Trouble started brewing when Shweta found instant success with Balaji's Kasautii Zindagi Kay. Unemployed and insecure, Raja began to feel threatened by her star status. When gossip mills started churning rumours of Shweta's link-up with co-star Cezanne Khan things went from bad to worse. "Raja is dominating and tries to hog the limelight at events," says a close friend.

Raja has lived under her shadow for almost seven years now. Thanks to Shweta, he started making appearances at Page 3 parties. There, much to Shweta's embarrassment, he made advances at women. In June 2005, actress Dolly Bindra filed a complaint at Juhu police station, accusing Raja of making sexual advances at a party. Shweta came to the rescue of her husband then. Although upset with Raja's behaviour, she did not acknowledge it publicly.

This is not an isolated incident. Raja is notorious for screaming at Shweta on the sets. "I have seen them squabbling on the sets. Shweta hides things from us to avoid the embarrassment. Once, Raja was hurling abuses at Shweta for money. Hours later, Raja stormed out while Shweta was left sobbing in her van," says our source.

Raja keeps a tight control over Shweta's earnings. While Shweta has done considerably well, Raja has been jobless. "Although Shweta is the breadwinner, she is a submissive wife, and lets Raja manage her money as per his choice. He has also invested Shweta's money in a Bhojpuri movie," says a family friend.

When they were approached for Nach Baliye 2, Shweta was not too keen but Raja, in a bid to become famous, did not want to miss the chance. "Shweta, an excellent dancer had a tough time matching steps with her husband. She was upset when she lost the contest because of her incompetent husband," says a Nach Baliye 2 contestant.

Meanwhile, Raja was hospitalised because of his liver infection. "Raja has been an alcoholic and when he was hospitalised Shweta took care of him," says a friend.

The couple has a seven-year-old daughter named Palak. Shweta was quiet about her marital problems because of her daughter, say a few family friends. "Although Shweta has been abused, she chose to keep mum because of Palak. The marriage has been long over, but Shweta does not want Palak to have bad memories. Their marriage is on the rocks definitely. I won't be surprised if she files for a divorce," adds the friend.

MARRIAGE ON THE ROCKS: TV actor Shweta Tiwari of Kasauti Zindagi Kee fame is reportedly having a rough time with husband Raja Chaudhari. The actor has approached the Mumbai police, accusing Chaudhari of assaulting her (Agencies)

MUMBAI: The Mumbai police have registered a case against popular TV actor Shweta Tiwari's husband Raja Chaudhari for allegedly assaulting her. Shweta, who has been married to Raja for over eight years, approached the police on Saturday evening. The couple has a five-year-old daughter. Sources said police are likely to question Chaudhari.

According to police, the couple's relationship was strained and they had frequent fights. On Saturday, they allegedly had another such argument.

Chaudhari's career as an actor has not taken off, but the two had become fairly prominent during the telecast of the Nach Baliye show on Star. Insiders say there was a degree of acrimony even on the show's sets.

"On the sets, Shweta would be rude to Raja in front of the other actors which would upset him. He even missed one performance," said a source. Shweta had acted in movies before she got a break with Balaji Telefilms. The actor has been associated with the popular show 'Kasauti Zindagi Kee' for the past six years.

Star on telly, torment at home
    OUR BUREAU
Mumbai, June 17: Prerna may take it lying down, but Shweta has had enough.

Shweta Tiwari, one of the highest paid television actresses in the country, has filed a complaint against her husband for drunken assault.

"She has lodged non-cognisable complaints on June 15 and 16 stating that her husband Raja Chaudhary had abused her verbally and physically in a drunken state," said a police officer in Malad, the northwest Mumbai suburb where the couple live.

The "non-cognisable" tag means a first information report under the domestic violence law has not yet been lodged. Police sources said if Shweta reports harassment again, the complaint would be converted into a criminal one and Raja could be arrested.

Sources in the television industry said Shweta, who is playing the immensely popular and ever-sacrificing Prerna in Kasautii Zindagi Kay on STAR Plus, has been putting up with physical abuse for sometime. Once or twice, she had reported for work on the Kasautii sets with bruises.

Raja, a TV producer better known as Shweta's finance manager, was in the news when a talent handler accused him of molesting her at a party.

Shweta, who chose to stick by Raja till now, has reportedly left the apartment with their seven-year-old daughter.

A television reporter said a drunk Raja misbehaved with her when she approached him for his reaction on Saturday evening. He later apologised, saying he was in a disturbed state of mind because of differences with his wife.

If Shweta is assaulted again and she pursues the case, the actress is entitled to a protection officer under the domestic violence law. If the battery charge is proved, it carries imprisonment of three to seven years.

Shweta, one of the two high-profile leading ladies left in the Ekta Kapoor stable after Smriti Irani's departure, and Raja had appeared on the dance competition Nach Baliye 2 but pulled out after he fell ill.
