What a comedown!

Sanjay Dutt and Sunil Shetty were supposed to participate in a costly episode of Kasamh Se. Now Anoop Soni and Vikas Sethi are the 'stars'. (Are they worth Rs 8 lakh?)

Vikas Sethi

Kasamh Se is all set to shoot for a special sequence priced at Rs 8 lakh. The sequence will unite Jay Walia (Ram Kapoor) and Bani (Prachi Desai). The couple had split after a fight, on-screen of course! Ekta Kapoor was planning to rope in Sanjay Dutt and Sunil Shetty for the special episode, where the stars had to play a significant role in uniting Jay and Bani. Sadly, both the actors have opted out for different reasons. Sunil Shetty is busy with his forthcoming show The Biggest Loser on Sahara One and Sanjay Dutt is still sorting out his legal problems.

Apparently Ekta had also approached many top-ranking actors from Balaji. But due to the unavailability of dates, she will now have to make do with Vikas Sethi and Anoop Soni.

Vikas and Anoop will play cops in the show and save Jay and Bani from a bomb blast, thus uniting them.

Both the actors were told about their special act in the show at the eleventh hour and had great problem accommodating their dates. "I was supposed to shoot for another Balaji show, but suddenly got a call from them asking me to play a cop in a special episode.
Anoop Soni
So Vikas and I have to save Jay and Bani out of a crisis and unite them," says Anoop Soni.

Says Nivedita Basu, senior creative head, "Yes, we could not get Sanjay Dutt and Sunil Shetty for the show. Sanjay is busy with his court hearing while Sunil is travelling for his show. We had scripted the special episode a week back but it did not materialise. We will try to get them later in the show, if everything works out fine."

What's going on, guys?
By: Shaheen Parkar

Nach Baliye hosts Shabbir Ahluwalia and Sangeeta Ghosh seemed to have taken their TV roles rather seriously.

They stayed steadfastly anchored to each other at Tina and Hussain's private party on Tuesday night.

Up close

Not for a second did the duo part ways. If they were not tripping over each other, they indulged in close dancing and whispered sweet nothings into each other's ears.

Onlookers at the bash were taken by surprise to see the couple appear so lovey-dovey with each other.

Bum Chums: Sangeeta Ghosh and Shabbir Ahluwalia &nb sp; &nb sp; &nb sp;

We know that both are party-hearty people, but Sangeeta (in fluorescent pink harem pants and a white top) and Shabbir created quite a spectacle of themselves on the dance floor.

Whether they were just playing for the shutterbugs or there's something more here than what meets the eye, we'll let the pictures do the talking.

However, telly people feel that they are a couple indeed. When asked about her close bond with Shabbir, Sangeeta says, "Why, why, why?

It was not our party, it was Hussain-Tina's bash. Why take our pictures and write about us?"

She further adds, "Shabbir and I share a great rapport. We are buddies. We are like two boys and love to have a good time and enjoy ourselves.

I wish we had great chemistry like the one we share on Nach Baliye!"

Shraddha Nigam and Karan Singh the newest 'cosy stars' in tellyland

Shraddha Nigam seems to have found love again. This time, it's with actor Karan Singh.

The twosome was spotted together at Hussain and Tina's belated Nach Baliye party on Tuesday night. Considering neither of them has featured in a show together, their close bonding at the party raised several eyebrows.

Telly viewers will recall that Karan played Sharad in Kasautii Zindagii Kay (Star) and Arnav in Kitni Mast Hai Zindagi (MTV).

When asked about the new man in her life, Shraddha says, "Karan is a friend."

YEH NAZDEEKIYAAN : Shraddha Nigam and Karan Singh

Cosy friends

Tell her the pictures tell an entirely different story, and she says, "Then let the pictures then do the talking.

I did my best to avoid them. I've known Karan for a very brief period. I was introduced to him through common friends."

In the past, Karan had been in a relationship with telly actress Barkha Bisht. The duo met on Balaji's MTV show, Kitni Mast Hai Zindagi.

There were even talks of marriage. But things soured and Bisht is now seeing Indraneil Sengupta, co-star of her Star show, Pyaar Ke Do Naam – Ek Raadha Ek Shyaam.

Shraddha, on the other hand, was in a long-term relationship with actor Ninad Kamat, whom she met while still in college at Mithibai. Later, there was buzz about an affair with then Sony boss Tarun Katiyal too.

Though seen in shows like Dekho Magar Pyar Se, Saathiya and Krishna Arjun, Shraddha has been missing from the soap circuit for a while.

Interestingly, she is related to Balaji czarina Ekta Kapoor, as Shraddha's mother and Ekta's father, Jeetendra, are first cousins!

Hiten's negative cut, albeit in Kasauti ...
Whenever any of her soaps is trailing in TRPs or needs a fresh impetus, the one actor on whom Ekta Kapoor depends on for a turnaround besides Ronit Roy is Hiten Tejwani. The latter has made a dramatic entry in Kasauti Zindagi Kay which underwent a generation leap last week. This is the first time Hiten is essaying a negative character Pratham Mittal, whose sole aim is to destroy Prerna's family. With a spiky haircut, light kohled eyes and a grey-brown French beard, Hiten looks every bit menacing. "I had to try three different haircuts before settling for this," he said. Interestingly, Hiten was called Pratham Mittal in his very first Balaji serial Kutumb. "In that serial, Pratham was a bratty, arrogant character but this Pratham is out-and-out a baddie," explains Hiten who has very fond memories of Kutumb where he met his soul- mate Gauri Pradhan.

Kasauti Zindagi Kay has zoomed into the future by 20 years. Prerna too has moved on in life. Betrayed in love and strengthened by life's problems she has changed completely. Love doesn't exist for her anymore and she makes sure that it doesn't enter the lives of her grandchildren either. Here are her seven granddaughters who are part of the show's generation leap.

Kritika Seghal

She plays Prerna, the eldest granddaughter who is named after her grandmother, and is the apple of her eye. As the story moves forward the young Prerna will play an important role in carrying forward her grandmother's legacy by following her footsteps. "Young Prerna is absolutely like her grandmother. Of course she also has dreams and desires too," says Kritika who moved to Mumbai recently. A friend who works in Balaji forced her to give an audition and Kritika landed up with the role.

Niddhi Uttam

Unlike her screen character, in real life she is not a tomboy. But she is a karate expert and loves riding bikes. A graphic designer, this Kanpur girl came to Mumbai to learn animation but ended up bagging a five-episode role in Maayka as Mahi's friend. "Ekta saw me in Maayka and called me for an audition for Kasturi," says Niddhi who also did the curtain raiser episode of Kasturi. "I did the first episode but then they felt I was too young for the role. But I have no regrets. I am playing Tara in Kasauti which is also a popular serial," she says.

Gazala Selmin

She was a highly popular child actor in films a decade ago. Starting with Bedardi in the early 90s, she has done over 20 films, which include hit flicks like Imtihaan, Anjaam and One Two Ka Four. "I have been working since the last 15 years and have also done lot of TV serials like Thoda Hai Thode Ki Zaroorat Hai, All The Best, Family No.1 and Darna Mana Hai," says the actress who plays the character of a beautiful but dumb girl Kritika in Kasauti. "I got a call from Balaji and I and jumped at the offer." Talking about her role Gazala says Kritika is a simple girl who does not even realise when someone plays a prank on her.

Praneeta Sahu

She had beaten more than 500 girls for the title role of Kasturi. But Praneeta Sahu disappointed her mentor Ekta who felt she is below par for the coveted role. "I felt the pressure and didn't play the character well. I fell ill and had to quit the show. But Ekta promised me a role in Kasauti's new generation and here I am playing Jwala, an arrogant girl with loads of attitude," says Praneeta. She regrets missing the golden opportunity of playing the title role in Kasturi, but that doesn't kill the excitement of playing Jwala. "It is not the lead character and therefore there is no pressure," says the Delhi girl.

Wasna Ahmed

She did a lot of theatre in Kolkata before coming to Mumbai for her studies. Fresh out of school, Wasna is stil awaiting her class XII results, but is sure about what she wants to do for a living. "It's definitely going to be acting if I do well in the next couple of years," says Wasna who walked into the Balaji house for an audition after her board exam and was selected to play Dhara. "She is a sweet girl who always dreams of her dream man. Dhara is into books, mostly mushy romances. She is liked by all but she longs to be in love," says Wasna.

Shrijita Dey

She essays the role of Gargi, the eldest daughter of Tushar and Doris. she is intelligent and studious but also very hyper and anxiety prone. Gargi wants to be a doctor but she is a pill-popper and throws a fit when nervous. Shrijita says she is an optimist and a confident girl in real life. While in college she also learnt Kathak and reveals that she was always keen on doing serials. Luckily for her, her cousin who works for Balaji came to her help. She was successful in her audition and got the role.

Rudrakshi Shetty

Daughter of Tushar and Doris, she is the youngest of four sisters. A gossip monger and mischief maker she is also a bundle of joy in Prerna's Gurukul. Meet Kanishta, played by six-year-old Rudrakshi, who first faced the camera for a soap commercial a year ago. She made her television debut in Kayamath a few months ago and Kasauti is her second show. The little girl who is enjoying the attention she gets on the sets from everyone says she loves acting.

Like my dadi, I also believe never fall in love: Kritika Senghal

'Kasautii Zindagii Kay' has had a makeover recently. Seven new faces have been added to the serial. All the seven girls are sisters and Prerna's grand daughters to Prerna. Nevertheless, young Prerna, played by Kritika Senghal is the toast of the new cast.

She not only plays a pivotal role, but is also an apple in the eye of Prerna and is expected to carry her legacy forward. Thus, these days Kritika is happy beyond bounds and is trying her best to live up to the role as well as the expectations of the people. Here she talks about her career so far, the character and much more.

Q: Tell us something about yourself.
A: Basically I am from Kanpur, but I have done my graduation from Delhi. Before entering into acting I used to work in an ad agency in Mumbai and also for the Hungama T.V.

Q: Tell us something about your role in Kasautii Zindagii Kay….
A: In the serial, I play the character of Sneha and Omi's daughter, and hence, I am also the grand daughter of Prerna. My name is also Prerna, as my grand mother loves me a lot and named me after her.

I follow the footsteps of my dadi and I am an apple of her eye. Like my dadi, I too believe in the line 'never fall in love'. Being the eldest of the seven sisters, I have to take care of them too.

At the same time, the character also wants to learn more about the outside world, as she has always been busy with her sisters. She had hardly had time for herself….

Q: Is this your first T.V. serial? How did you get this role?
A: No, I have already worked in Kyunki Sas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi as Sanchi, so Ekta Kapoor knew me. For this role, she just called me for an audition and then I got selected.

But for Kyunki…, one of my cousins just told me that there has been auditions going on for Kyunki… so I just gave it a try and I got through. From there, now I am playing Prerna….

Q: So how do you feel playing young Prerna, as Prerna is already very famous?
A: Yes, I feel very happy playing the role next to the lead. Moreover, my name is also Prerna. But it is very challenging as Shweta Tiwari is already famous as Prerna. As the level of performance is already high, I have to work hard to maintain this level…. It is a very difficult job. So, I am a bit scared too…

Q: How has been your experience with the co-actors?
A: It's fun and I am enjoying the company of all of my co-actors. Being almost of same age, it is a pleasure working with them.

Will Anurag Basu return to Kasautii?
20 May, 2007 l 0000 hrs ISTlHarshada Rege
Cezanne Khan has been known as Anurag Basu for more than five years now. But the actor has now quit Kasautii Zindagii Kay. After Anurag's death in the show, Hiten Tejwani is all set to take over from where Cezanne left. However, Hiten will be playing another character and not Anurag. Meanwhile Cezanne as usual keeps a low-profile these days. After a little prodding he spoke to BT...

Hiten Tejwani is playing another character in Kasautii... Does that mean you may return to the serial in the future?

No, I don't see that happening. A lot of people think that this is just a twist in the tale and I will return to Kasautii, but that's not true. I will be known as Anurag for a long time and I am happy about that, but I don't think I'll come back to it. I have said my goodbye to Anurag. People have given me a lot of love and that's a great parting gift for now.

So, what prompted him to give up a character so popular?

I wasn't comfortable with another age leap. In fact, I was sceptical when the age leap happened for the first time, but I decided to stay on then. But I can't see myself playing a 80-year-old grandfather. I don't think that I would look convincing at all. That's a bit too much I think. My performance wouldn't match the age of the character. And i didn't want to disappoint the viewers.

Have you signed any new projects as yet?

No. there were a few offers but nothing interesting has come up yet.

Despite your popularity you have always maintained a low-profile...

I have never felt the need to clarify any rumours. I am here to act and not react to the gossip that's been spread around. Even on the sets of Kasautii... I used to be by myself. In a way this is a good break because now i am away from the controversies.

But you been involved in quite a few of them...

I have no clue how. I am not the sorts who parties a lot or go out clubbing, yet my name has been dragged in many controversies. The best thing to do is keep quiet and not react to. This break has ensured that I stay away from controversies too (laughs).

Your role as Anurag Basu in Kasautii Zindagi Kay was a hit with the view- ers. Why did you quit? I did enjoy my stint with the show. But, I simply couldn't con- tinue with Kasautii.. any longer. A year ago, I had opposed the first generation leap in the storyline. I was asked to play the role of a father to youngsters who are of my age. I don't look like a 50-year- old by any stretch of imagina- tion, do I? Still, I stuck on because the show did give me unprecedented popularity But the second 20-year . generation leap was stretching things too far. It was out of the question.. so, I quit. From April, you have quit Balaji Tele- films..right? Yes. Initially, my plan was to quit in January but the generation leap was postponed to April. Ektaa (Kapoor) asked me to stay back ..I had no issues with that. Were your problems with co-star Shweta Tiwari another reason for quitting? No. I don't mix personal and pro- fessional decisions. Besides, I have nothing against Shweta. There are rumours of a comeback … Not that I know of. I will never return to Kasautii... So, what's next? I haven't made any plans. There were a couple of offers, but they didn't interest me. Sony had planned a show with me opposite Aamna Shariff, but it didn't materialise. I'm just making good use of my break. I went on a holiday to Karachi.I had a lovely time with my cousins there. I've just returned. I'll consider the options now. You're friendly with Sony's creative director Sandiip Sikcand. Is there a show in the offing with the channel? I do know Sandiip but I can't say that we're thick pals. There is no question of playing favourites with a channel. Does that include a show with Balaji? Why not? The production house or channel doesn't matter..it could be a social drama or a thriller. I'm just looking for interesting roles. Tell us about your Pakistani show? It's called Silsile Chahat Ke. I play a double role in it. I've been shoot- ing in Dubai for it since the past six months. It will be on air in a month. I can't divulge the story, but it's going to be a rocking show.

T elevision actors are perpet- ually stuck in the rut of hectic shooting schedules and erratic timings. Of course, their earnings make up for all the hard work they put in to their careers. While most telly stars are disci- plined and systematic investors, there are others who are clueless about plans on making their mon- ey work for them. Rohit Roy, currently focusing on films, calls himself a conser- vative investor. He states, "I most- ly invest in mutual funds and real estate. The recent hike in the interest rate for home loans did affect us. But, now I see interest rates being slashed down. Anoth- er good way to save is putting mon- ey in fixed deposits. The bank I deal with offers me 10 per cent interest instead of 9.5 per cent." His brother Ronit Roy, seen in four Balaji's Telefilms prime time serials, thinks otherwise. According to him, the hike in the interest rate of fixed deposits is marginal and is not very bene- ficial for those who have their money in other sectors. He informs, "I dabble in commodities, and equities. Recently, investing in real estate has proved beneficial for me. I earn more on real estate; hence I invest very little in fixed deposits." Mona Singh, the face of Sony Entertainment Television, strong- ly believes in playing it safe. She says, "Most of my money is invest- ed in UTI bonds since the returns are fruitful." Her father and char- tered accountant take care of her finances. Talking about the swings in the share market, the Roy brothers say that they faced a huge loss four years ago. Since then, Rohit has kept away from the market while Ronit has taken to mid-term and long-term investments. "I don't want to play with the market any- more, it's quite risky. I'm not inclined towards it," says Roy jun- ior. Ronit adds, "I don't specu- late..so, I don't stand a chance of losing big amounts." While jewellery is considered a profitable investment, Ram Kapoor has a different opinion to offer. He says, "My wife Gautami has a huge collection of jewellery, but I don't view it as an invest- ment. It's either inherited or bought by me, so there are senti- ments attached." He says that their investments are restricted to fixed deposits. Amrita Singh is unsure of where her money goes. "I've absolutely no idea about my finan- cial investments. I think I invest in mutual funds," Singh signs off.
