Mizoram NGOs want Hindi soap banned

Aizawl (UNI): The Hindi serial Kasauti Zindagi Kay which endeared itself to the Mizo community since last year, has once again come into controversy after several community-based NGOs have decided to put pressure on cable TV operators to stop showing the serial.

Reports from Champhai district today said a recent meeting of NGOs has decided to request the cable TV operators to stop screening the Hindi serial as it was allegedly creating ''problems in church attendance and condolence gatherings''.

Apart from this, the NGOs were of the opinion that the Hindi serials propagate; the Hindu religion and frequent viewing of them by children could lead them ''astray from the Christian religion''.

The local vernacular newspapers especially in Champhai had also discontinued printing the translated version of the serial despite the public demand.

At present, the serial is as popular as ever and nearly all-vernacular magazines across the state carry a translated version of the serial apart from the dubbing the serial during telecsting by local TV channels.

Half Christians

The recent survey conducted by the Christian Broadcasting Network on the number of viewers that their GOD channel has in Mizoram is an eye-opener on the how shallowly Christianity has affected Mizos despite the fact that the Mizo community had embraced it wholeheartedly about a hundred years ago. Apart from GOD channel, there are several other Christian channels that are beamed into our homes. But these too have not seen the audience as would be expected in a Christian community. These, and the fact that Mizoram is becoming infamous as a corrupt state, indicates clearly how the state
religion has not affected in any way the day to day behaviour of the people. The way the Christian youth, as YMA and JAC members, have not shunned violence nor shown a tolerant attitude towards social and perceived evils as Christianity teaches also says a lot about the Christianity that Mizos practice. Parents and the older generation keep an outward appearance, a show of reverence for the Church, of being good Christians without having any real respect or fear of God. What the Mizo Christian fears most is how others would see him and not how God would see him.

Now, coming back to the GOD channel, it may argued that the communication gap has made the channel not as popular as it should be. But this argument becomes meaningless when the Hindi serial "Kasauti Zindagi Kay" has become the craze although the Mizo people know little of the Hindi language too. It had become so popular that local TV channel providers had been forced to give a dubbed version of the episodes. Could the Mizo people be worshipping the Church and not God who created it? There are many evidences to show that this could be so. Some people respected and venerated as good Christians and good church members are corrupt government officials. Church youth who are most docile and humble in church are some of those who have little mercy or forgiveness for wrongdoers. This great deformity in the Mizo Christianity is leading the people towards an abyss that once stepped in to, a rescue would not be an option. The different church denomination needs to introspect to find where we have gone wrong. This is not hard to do as a ready guideline is available in the
Bible. Church organisations should not play a popularity role as political parties do as a grey area is not acceptable according to Bible teaching.

Tulsi Bridges Barriers From Mumbai To Mizoram

Music has no language nor do histrionic skills have any. This might sound clichd, but tribal people in this northeastern state of Mizoram are hooked on to most Hindi soaps aired by satellite channels - but with the sound muted.

And if they miss out on nuances of the "K" soaps like "Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi" or "Kasauti Zindagi Kay" or "Kkusum" that are such a staple in the rest of the country, TV viewers in Mizoram simply look at the next day's Mizo newspapers for a translation of some of the popular soaps.

Sounds bizarre but it's absolutely true. Jessica Sangliani, a homemaker in Mizoram's capital Aizawl, for instance, speaks fluent English and can barely understand Hindi.

"I have been watching two serials daily without any break - 'Kasauti Zindagi Kay' ad kyunki saas bhi kabhi bahu thi on Star Plus Jessica said.

"I simply relish each and every episode."

Like her, a majority of the Mizo people are conversant in English but know very little Hindi.

Mizoram boasts of being the second highest literate state after Kerala with an estimated literacy rate of 88.06 percent in a total population of 890,000.

And thanks to that, the language barrier is of little consequence to
TV fanatics like Jessica who simply look at the next day's newspapers to catch up on any minor detail they might have missed.

For some not too busy people, there is an even better option -- watching the repeat telecast of the serials in the afternoons with the translated dialogues in front of them for a better understanding of the story.

"I simply love Tulsi's acting in 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi' and the translated dialogues are even better as we understand what she says," said Rosey, another homemaker, of the popular soap and its star Smriti Irani who essays the central role of the daughter-in-law.

Local newspapers were forced to oblige their readers after innumerable requests asking them to print translated dialogues of some select primetime TV serials.

"We record the serials and then translate each and every dialogue carefully. We have employed some people with knowledge in both Hindi and Mizo to do the translations for the benefit of our readers," said an editor of a local newspaper.

Some enterprising local cable networks also run subtitled Hindi serials a day later with locals taking to the idea in a big way. "More and more people are taking our cable network connection as we show some popular Hindi TV serials with subtitles of the dialogues in the Mizo dialect," said a private cable TV operator.

Would Tulsi of "Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi" fame or Prerna of "Kasauti Zindagi Kay" care to visit this mountainous state to see their reel selves spouting Mizo, or nothing at all.

Marked change!

Ranjib Mazumder

Before: Tina Parekh as Mukti

Tina Parekh is having an identity crisis, thanks to her make-up in Kasautii Zindagii Kay. Tina, who played Mukti in the show, is now back in the new avatar of Devaki, a village girl who now plays an active role in helping Prem (Manoj Bohra) get back his lost memory. Tina has been given a new look, wherein she is dressed like a village girl with a scar on her face. And, incidentally, people have stopped recognising her after that.

Tina says, "After I put that make up on my face, people found it very hard to recognise me. Since Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki set is just adjacent to Kasautii…'s, I went there to chat with friends during the break. But, to my amazement, no one recognised me. Then, I spotted Ketan, GM of Balaji, on the sets and waved at him. But, he too didn't recognise me and walked away. I was really confused. Then, I caught hold of him and asked him what happened. He pointed to the scar on my face and it was all clear to me."

After: As Devaki

This is not the end. The actress was also denied entry in her building. Tina recalls, "On the third day, we finished shooting at around 10.30 pm and I was too tired to remove my make-up on the sets. So, I decided to go home directly. But, the security guard did not let me in and created a hullabaloo. I kept my cool and explained to him about my make-up. But, even then, he made me sign the register and only then he let me go inside," she adds.

As Tina will have to play Devaki for some more time, is she feeling embarrassed? "It isn't a hassle for me. But, I do feel awkward when people do not recognise me," she says.

Countdown for Tina, Manoj
By: Tushar Joshi
November 29, 2006
After having worked as co-stars in Kasautii Zindagii Kay, Tina Parakh and Manoj Bohra will now be seen anchoring a musical countdown on Star One.
Confirming the news, Tina says, "I am very excited about this new project.

I have never anchored a show before, so this will be my first time. It is a countdown show with many interesting elements. We will begin shooting soon."
When asked why she took up the project in spite of doing two dailies (Kasautii Zindagii Kay and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii), Tina says, "I have done my fair share of acting.

Hosting this show is an opportunity to explore something new."
Tina adds that working with Manoj is was added incentive to take on the project. She says, "The fact that we share a good rapport and are comfortable with each other will work in our favour."

Spiritual sojourn

Even though she won the Best Supporting Actor award at the Indian Telly Awards for her role as Mukti in Kasautii, Tina wasn't present at the ceremony.

"My guruji Sri Sri Ravi Shanker was in town so I had a tough choice between going for the awards show and spending time with him. I chose the latter and visited him along with Manoj."

When asked about her association with the spiritual leader, she says, "I have always been a God-fearing person. I am very religious and always pray for blessings in personal and professional life. For me, Guruji is a medium to get in touch with higher powers."

Currently working out to be in the best of her form, she says, "I am happy to be back in both Kasautii and Kahaani. These days, my focus is on working out and getting back into good shape," signs off the actress.

Why Cezanne split with Shubha

It's old news that Cezanne Khan and his last known girlfriend Shubha Verma have called their relation off. But we get you some inside dope n why it culminated with a sad end.

A little bird who sits on the perching trees of sets told us that one of the main reasons for the break up was Cezanne's conservative nature. He told Shubha in no uncertain terms that she needs to learn Hindi and give up her Australian accent. But what served as the final knock were his remarks on Shubha's skimpy outfits, so much so that he even expected her to don a burkha! Mad in love Shubha tried her level best to give in to his demands but in vain!

We wonder how could a man dwelling in an urban city like Mumbai, working in such a profession lay such frivolous demands in front of his lady love. Tsk tsk.... Cezanne, grow up!

"Cezanne is a closed file!"

People love to hate her but they dare not ignore her. First as the conniving Apo*na of Kasautii Zindagi Kay and currently as the funny but vindictive Maya of Karam Apnaa Apnaa, Geetanjali Tikekar has found a place for herself in the list of 'most sought after vamps of the tube!'

Though like any dreamy kid she desired to be a doctor, but destiny had other plans and here she is!

Prashant Golecha chances an opportunity to converse with this pretty, vivacious and talented actor. Excerpts.

"Maya is amusing, she is an adorable vamp!"

How different is it to play Maya (Karam...) from Apo*na (Kasautii...)?
Maya is amusing. She is an adorable vamp! Playing this character is a stress buster for me because of the fun element, which was absent in Apo*na. I am lucky to bag this role!

What has been the response so far?
There are times when people are confused and ask me if I am the same actress who played Apo*na!

It seems you miss playing Apo*na?
Yes I do as is it this that character which took me to a peak. She was an ultimate vamp as she crossed all limits and had shades of insanity.

Your character vanished because Komalika (Urvashi) was making a comeback?
My character disappeared and re-appeared at various intervals as per the story requirement. Imagine if we actors decide the fate of our tracks and career moves Balaji could have not been this BIG ever.

Any memorable fan encounters?
I am generally mobbed by people who identify me as Apo*na of Kasautii. Once I had gone to Hare Rama Hare Krishna temple where a cluster of Gujarati ladies gathered around me and questioned me about my attempt to kill bechara and innocent Anurag (laughs).

You share a very comfortable equation with Balaji by now, right?
Balaji is like a mother company. Since the past five years I have been associated with them and by taking extra care of us they have spoilt us in many ways. Till date I have done daily soaps only with Balaji and episodics for other production houses where I feel like a guest! Everything is well between Ekta and me as it was a mutual decision to put a full stop to Apo*na's character.

Kasautii. is known to be Balaji's most contentious unit. How did you manage to wield the controversies?
It's just me; I have learnt to handle it my way. I might be disliked but am still respected. I have never bothered to clarify a lot of things, which were reported in papers because I don't believe in giving importance to petty things. As long as my family is happy and controversies don't affect them, I'm cool!

That reminds me of your rumoured affair with your co-star Cezanne Khan. Any comments?
Cezanne is a closed file! I don't want to talk about him at this stage of my life.

"May be someday I'll write a book!"

Describe your dream man?
I will marry a man who I feel can father my kids. He needs to be very compassionate and kind. I have my own mood swings so my man needs to be extremely understanding and patient. He should also have a good sense of humour and should love pets.

Could he be from the entertainment industry?
Yes, in fact it will be convenient professionally and will make my personal life smoother.

Introduce us to the real Geetanjali Tikekar?
What you see is what you get. I am a simple person, compassionate, introvert, short tempered at times but basically amiable by nature. I am ambitious to an extent and I do crave for good work.

Tell us something about you which people don't know?
During my childhood days, I used to maintain a journal where I would pen my thoughts. May be, someday I'll write a book.

You are known to be very techno-savvy. Are you?
Yes I am inclined towards gizmos, be it the digital camera, laptops, mobile phones, computers. I am quite a net freak too! I even sketch on my mobile just for fun.

What do you do besides acting?
I have put up my garment unit in Pune and we run it by the label named Luxe. Probably by next year you will see our collections at all the Fashion Weeks in India. My brother is a professional designer and he handles the creatives while I handle administration.

Kasauti Zindagi ki: A feminist soap opera

An Ekta Kapoor serial has never failed to touch the pulse of it s female spectators. Kasauti Zindagi ki also continues its unbeaten expedition for years. Directed by Prasad under the banner of Balaji Telefilms, Kasauti Zindagi ki is one of the most popular daily soap operas, telecasted on Star Plus from Monday to Friday, at 8:30 p.m.This family drama centers around the struggles of the protagonist Prerana Bajaj (Shweta Tiwaari).

The serial is woven around three large business families -the Sharmas, the Basus and the Bajajs that are connected through the protagonist Prerana, the daughter of Sharma family. Prerana as a young girl loves Anurag Basu (Cezzane khan) and conceives his son. But Anurag betrays Prerana, being unable to stand against his mother Mohini Basu (Kannu Gill). He marries the lady villain of the serial Komolika (Uravashi Dholakia) and eventually divorces her. Prerana still loves Anurag, but; sacrifices her love to save his establishments, by marrying Rishabh Bajaj (Ronit Roy). These are the main characters around whom the story moves from the beginning till date. Other major characters of the day are Sampada, Prem, Mukti, Sneha and Debonita.

The story lately concentrates on the second generation. Prerana comes back after eight years of imprisonment, only to find that Mr.Bajaj is missing from the city. Her Business establishments have been taken over by her own son Prem (Manoj Bohra) with the help of Komolika and Debonita. Prerana starts her battle against injustice and wins over the opposite side with the help of Mukti Deshmukh (Tina Parekh).

Prem and Mukti share an unsuccessful
love affair in the past that is revived recently by the regular meetings. Komolika fears that she will loose Prem to the other side. She threatens Prerana that if Prem won't get married to Debonita, she won't reveal the whereabouts of Mr.Bajaj. Mukti overhears this conversation and steps back from Prem's love. Prem also realizes the vicious side of Komolika and sacrifices his love for his mother's happiness. But on the day of Mukti's marriage Prerana realizes the true love between Mukti and Prem and sends Mukti to Prem. The lovers reunite only for a couple of minutes. A truck sent by some unknown villain, murders Mukti at the same instance. Prem loses his senses due to this incident.Mr.Bajaj also reappears on the scene, mysteriously, not revealing his presence to Prerana.

This family
entertainer can be considered as a feminist soap opera since it revolves round the intrepid actions of the protagonist. Prerana is daring and ready to fight for justice. She is not bothered about the consequences, while she stands with justice. She fights against her whole family on behalf of getting justice for Mukti. She makes the young girls Mukti and Sneha realize about their rights and power as a woman. She is the constant inspiration for everyone to fight against justice. The direction of this serial is excellent, especially when the emotional and dramatic scenes are handled. Shweta Tiwaari and Uravashi Dholakia have given full life to their characters, correspondingly gathering the admiration and wrath of their spectators. The male crew also presents a remarkable performance. Cezzane khan's acting in the emotional scenes and Ronit Roy's rendering of the dialogues will definitely grasp the praise of the family audience. Among the new faces, apart from Manoj Bohra and Tina Parekh, nobody presents a notable performance.

The screenplay of the serial is superb. The costumes and jewelleries of each and every character have been selected aptly and utmost care to the situation and role. However, editing of the plot requires more attention as it does not rise to the standard of the serial. The story unnecessarily drags at many instances with some song scenes and repeated actions. The title song of the serial will attract anybody's attention. The picturization of the song is equally amazing as the melodious singing of Babul Supriyo and Priya Bhattacharya.

On the whole Kasauti Zindagi Ki is a complete time-pass. Regular viewers will enjoy the ups and downs in the serial. Where we have a woman like Prerana to fight against injustice, it will never fail to entertain the audience
