Kasauti Zindagi Kay

Balaji Telefilms, Star Plus
January 05, 2007

A clean sweep for the K-series from Balaji Telefilms with Kasauti in the third slot. The serial had its own highs and lows in Prem's affair with Debonita and the return of Komolika. But the storyline received a sudden twist with three events - Prerna going to jail, the disappearance and re-appearance of Mr Bajaj and the murder of Mukti and re-appearance in a different form.

Guess that is what contributed to Kasauti retaining its position in the top three. The serial is now cashing in on the popularity of Prem and the whole storyline is revolving around him.

The evicted jodis: Sans any pressure of being evaluated, all the other contestants grooved together like one big family! Gauri-Hiten and Sharad-Keerti's performance, though not that impressive was covered up by the looks department while newly weds, Arjun-Gurdeep gave their first performance post their wedding with a jhadu in their hand. Senior couple, Rasik and Ketki played safe by hip-shaking on a retro number. To watch the two effortless and suave dancers, Manav and Gaurav together, was quite remarkable! But Mr. Chopra's dulcinea, Narayani seemed quite disinterested in the on goings. She made a comment "waise main to bura hi bolti hu?"(blame it on a bad hair day?).

Thumps up: It has to be the electrifying and groovy performance by Sarojji's favourite, Shweta Tiwari who raised the mercury level by dancing on crazy kiya re. Proof needed? Kunal literally broke into sweat!!!

Thumps down: Must say Bhaktiar lacks sportsmanship! He's still not got over the depression of his ouster and couldn't even plaster a fake smile though his to be better half, Tanaaz played diplomatic to the hilt!

The anchors: If we call this finale episode a well baked cake, the yummy icing can be credited to the anchors Shabbir Alhuwalia and Rajev Paul who entertained one and all with their Munna-Circuit spoof. Though unlike Arshad, Rajev has two left feet, he backed the small screen Munna with his funny mannerisms.

Thumps up: It was the hunk of tellydom, Shabbir who charmed everyone with his comic timing, his dialogue delivery and his tapori dance! Bollywood, are you listening?

Thumps down: Once again the fairer sex (Sangeeta Ghosh in this case) was left with just the same old task™dd oomph to the show!

Wallowing winters

Imagine: Waking up on winter morning, with your face peeking into the cold while the rest of you snuggled comfortably beneath a pile of blankets and looking out of the window at the breathtaking snow cast exterior!!!

Thanks to a beautiful, cosy winter, some fortunate beings get to live such an experience and some left envisioning about it thanks to the seasonal heterogeneity on our planet.

Let's find out who all from our television fraternity have enjoyed this time of the year and who haven't (if any!).

Sanjit Bedi

I hail from Delhi and my mother's still based there so I know the flavour of the season. Frankly speaking I miss winters to the extent that after Diwali I go into a depression. I miss wearing my jackets and sweaters, sitting in the sun eating fruits. It's funny but I have seen in Mumbai that thodi si thand padh gayi and they behave as if there's snowfall. Even in the ac, they complain of cold! And my wife is one of them I miss the piping hot parathas and hot beverages, which one can relish in actual winters.

Jennifer Winget

I love winters but where do we get to enjoy it in Mumbai? I remember spending nearly a month in Delhi during this season when there was ice rain! It was very memorable. Ironically I have never seen snow in my life and I have an intrinsic desire to visit a place full of snow! And this hope surges when I go through the pictures sent by my friends who belong to snowcapped countries. I have been abroad a couple of times but not during winter.

Tanaaz Lal

I love winters but only when I'm abroad. If we go through such winters in Mumbai I'll need to hoard lots of extra clothes and once the season ends, storage and maintenance becomes a big issue! I will have to keep a track of the winter trends and that would be too taxing! So it's good the way it is for this metropolitan.

Sampada Vaze

Oh how I love winters! I've spent four years studying in Kalimpong, near Darjleeing, the same place where Danny Denzgapa hails. Winters makes one feel peaceful especially when you experience cold air. When I came down to Mumbai I was surprised to see what people call this season 'winter'. There the temperature would keep hanging on five degrees or less! I have stocked good winter clothes, which I can't wear here. Two years back I had the most cherishable Xmas winter in the Swiss Alps.

Sachin Verma

I have been born and brought up in Delhi and needless to say I miss the Delhi winters. If in Mumbai we have the same extremity in weather I would get to wear a variety of clothes- from pullovers to jackets and one could also eat well. Mumbai would be as good as London if we have such winters here.

Another actor has quit Balaji, taking the toll to five popular television actors who have decided to move on. After Amar Upadhayay, Kiran Karmarkar, Rajeev Khandelwal and Iqbal Khan, it's Cezanne Khan of Kasauti Zindagi Kay who has decided to end his association with Balaji.

The 28-year-old actor who has been playing father to actors almost his age, says he can't relate to his character anymore. "The first time that Kasauti took a leap I wasn't sure I was ready to play an older Anurag Basu. But later I decided to go with the flow," says Cezanne. But what made him decide to quit the show at this stage? "I've been playing Anurag for years now. It's been really long and I reached a point where I couldn't give much to the character. I wanted to grow and venture into newer avenues."

The buzz is that Cezanne had already resigned from the show. "I've quit," he says. Apparently, the reason is the third generation leap that Kasauti is all set to take. "Playing a father to 20-plus people was bad. After the leap I would be expected to play a grandfather."

Cezanne says he is too young to play a grandfather. So, has he told Ekta Kapoor about his decision? "I did meet them a couple of days ago. Initially they were adamant that I stay back but when I explained my problem, both Ekta and Shobha ma'am understood my plight. We're parting on an amicable note," says Cezanne.

There were rumours that Ekta was miffed with Cezanne who insisted on working just 15 days a month. "There is no animosity between Ekta and me," he says.

The cool dude of television wants to make a new beginning. "My last working day with Balaji is January 27. I'm serving my one-month notice period," he informs.

While Cezanne Khan is all set to tread a different path, his producer Ekta claims to be clueless about this. "First, I haven't decided whether Kasauti will take the leap or no. Whenever a show takes a leap, a lot of actors threaten to quit the show. And at the moment I'm not in a mood to put up with their tantrums. I'm going for a holiday and hence haven't taken a call on this. Cezanne hasn't had a formal meeting with me regarding his resignation. I'll deal with this issue after I get back to Mumbai from Bali."

Telly stars discuss Kama Sutra

We belong to a land that has one of the richest history of art and culture. Our ancestors always encouraged creativity in all aspects of life. In fact, we're home to some of the most fascinating concepts and texts in the world. One of them being Vatsyayana's 'Kama Sutra, the ancient Indian text on human sexual behaviour.

But look at the irony of our times; on one hand we write about sexuality in its most sophisticated form while on the other our culture considers 'sex' as the biggest taboo. This socio-cultural debate is our chosen topic this time and we get television celebrities talking about this apparent hypocrisy.

Ruhail Amin gets some reactions of TV celebs on why this book known for its scientific approach to human desire is not being appreciated in its place of birth.

Shekhar Suman

I think it is because sexuality is still a taboo in India. On the personal front, people love to discuss Kamasutra. Married couples and lovers actually follow it with profound interest; though they refuse to openly accept it. As a community we all speak about it in a hush-hush manner. Unless this hypocrisy is addressed, things are going to remain the same. Let's hope things change in the future.

Moonmoon

The reason for it being a taboo is because of the social inhibitions. We still consider Kamasutra as a book that encourages the wrong thing. The perception in the west is just the opposite, that's why they can appreciate it better than us. I find it extremely contradictory when we belong to a land where Kamasutra was written and yet feel ashamed of discussing sex.

Sachin Verma

We suffer from a low pride in our art and culture. That's why we consider it a taboo. We wait for the westerners to approve of it before we can own it. That is one of the main reasons for our unacceptance of our own literature. We should take pride in the fact that our history of broad-mindedness dates back to thousands of years.

Shweta Salve

Though, I haven't read the book, but I guess the reason for Kamasutra being a taboo is our hypocrisy. We're not ready to accept our sexuality openly as it is considered a breach of decency.

Sumit Sachdev

I would say, it's because of extreme bigotry. We are still trapped in the dark ages when it comes to discussing sex. Kamasutra was a book that has been acclaimed for its scientific approach to human desire. It's so sad to see it not being appreciated in its place of birth.

Tina Parekh

We are a land of rich culture and tradition. Yoga , Ayurveda and Kamasutra are integral to our cultural values.Somehow, the reason for Kamasutra being a taboo subject is because our culture no longer considers sex as a natural expression of love and desire. Instead it is equated with licentiousness.
