Chapter 6

Jai looked at his father speechless. He had hurt this man more than he could imagine. Jai knew he had given up trying. But he was his son. He would make up to him. He would, no matter what happens.

Jai cleared his throat and said. 'Dad I have decided to stay back. I am not doing this for anyone but for me.'

He left the room saying that. Uday Walia looked at him go.

Bani dressed Shradha for an outing with her dadaji. He had promised her he would take her to the beach. Shradha ran to her dadaji. Uday Walia looked at her and asked. 'Where's ma?'

'In the room..'

'Call her we will take her to the beach..' he said.

Shradha ran to Bani as fast her feet could take her.

Few minutes later Uday saw Shradha dragging Bani to him.

'Ma.. come… '

'Shadhu you go … look everyone is waiting for you…'

'You come along with us Bani..' Said Uday Walia looking at her.

Bani stood hesitantly. She had never accompanied dada and poti anywhere.

'Come on Bani .. it's getting late..' He said to her hurriedly

Bani did not have heart to refuse him. She couldn't. She went back to her room and walked out in five minutes wearing a cotton dress a pale yellow floral salwar khameez.

Uday smiled and walked to the porch holding Shradha's hand. Tony put the ball and her play things in the dickey. They were at the porch Jai walked in. he looked at them and Uday said, 'Shradha wanted to go to beach ... we are going ... where are you off to?'

'I needed few things from Town…' he said looking at the little girl who looked at him with awe. Jai reached for her and patted her head.

Shradha did not shrug this time.

'Come along Jai. Let Raghu drop us at the beach and you can take the car to town. Finish your work and collect us from the beach…'

'Alright,' he said.

Uday Walia got in beside the driver and Jai and Bani and Shradha got into the back seat.

Bani felt very odd. The silence filled in the car.

Jai decided to get his license renewed soon. Every time he couldn't rely on Raghu or taxi. His brother's car was parked in the garage with out use he was going to use that car. He decided.

The thought of his brother Rajeev brought ache in his heart. He looked at Shradha took her hand in his and caressed. How could he have ignored the girl he thought .how could he forget the relation he shared with his brother they were like friends. How could he? He felt his throat tighten. He lifted Shradha from the seat onto his lap. Shradha struggled from his hold then gave up as he put her on his lap and kissed her head.

Bani felt his tension. She stole glances at him. She saw his forlorn look she knew he was lost in the world of his own. She saw him kiss Shradha. She felt bad for him. She did want to reach out and tell him it was okay.. next minute she thought alarmingly what was wrong with her why was she getting emotionally attached to this family. First, Uday Walia and now Jai Walia. She was actually feeling bad for him.

She should consult a shrink she thought she was loosing her marbles.

Raghu stopped the car at the beach road. Shradha got out excitedly. Raghu took her things from the boot of the car. Uday Walia Bani and Shradha walked towards the beach.

Jai looked at them go.

Uday Walia took a stroll around the beach Bani went to play with Shradha. Shradha walked towards the sea and Uday Warned, 'don't go so much in to the water. Okay..' Shradha nodded. He looked at Bani. Bani shook her head.

They had great time in the beach. Uday later sat on the sandy beach looking at them playing in the water. He shouted at them not to go too far. Once he shouted Bani walked up to him and said, 'Don't exert your self we will not go far… please.. take care of your self..' she assured him.

Bani made sure they did not go too far. She did not want to give him tension.

Jai purchased few things. Went to a book store spent an hour in there and returned to the beach.

Raghu parked the car along side of the road. Jai got out and walked towards the sea. There were many children and family enjoying in the water, and playing on the sand. Enjoying bhelpuri and stuff. It's been ages since he had come to the beach. He took a stroll looking out for his father. He walked for few minutes and saw Shradha and Bani enjoying in the water he looked for his father his dad was sitting on the sandy beach and looking at them. He walked towards his father and sat down beside him.

'Jai.. finished your work?' asked his dad looking at him.

'Han. '

'Where you serious about not going to London?' asked his father.

'mm..'

'You will join the office here or has some other plan?'

'I'll join the office. I'll start from tomorrow..' he said looking at Shradha and Bani.

He saw Bani picking her up and walking towards them.

Uday Walia's face broke into a smile. He couldn't believe his son would stay back. What had changed his mind? Thought his dad, what ever it was he was happy about it.

Shradha got down from Bani picking up the ball. They walked towards Uday.

Bani saw him and she felt awkward, she was fully wet. Her dress was sticking to her body. She straightened her crumbled dress and walked up to them.

Uday looked at Shradha.'what is this Shadhu you are covered in sand. Just look at you hair.'

Jai looked at the little girl holding the ball with one hand and getting told by his father. He tried his best not to stare at Bani. She was looking little awkward about her dress. He turned his attention on the girl . "Dad Shradha has come to the beach to play it's no big deal sand is sticking to her head. He said taking the ball from her hand tossing it.

'Come on big girl we will play for a while..' he said inviting her.

Shradha threw Bani a look and then to her dadaji.

Uday nodded at her, taking that as a consent she went to chase the ball laughing excitedly Jai followed her.

Bani sat down looking at them play.

Uday watched them play and his eyes filled with tears. Was he wrong in dreaming for a happy family? He looked at Bani who was seated little away from him. She was making circles on the sand lost in thoughts. He cleared his throat to get her attention.

Bani looked at him. He pointed at Jai and Shradha and asked, 'Am I at fault to wish for a family?'

Bani did not have an answer. Her throat tightened and she looked away.

Jai and Shradha came back to them. Shradha has befriended Jai during the game. She liked him he was not like Tony who would toss the ball simply standing in one place. The new uncle was fun to play with.

'Let's go dad .' said Jai lifting Shradha in his arms.

Uday Walia struggled to get up. Bani watched him for a second and gave her hand to hold. He looked at her for a moment and took her hand getting up from the sand. Bani helped him brush the sand from his dress.

'Thank you..' he said with a smile.

They walked to the car. Raghu, their driver stubbed the cigarette as he saw them. He looked at them alarmed. The three of them where bathed in sand. How was he going to get the sand out of the seat? He thought angrily. He loved the car. How could he even let them sit in his precious car? The car was his baby. The three insensitive people were going to untidy his seat. In his train of thoughts Raghu was not aware the owner of the car was with him. It was his children who are going to untidy his car. No matter who owned the vehicle Raghu couldn't tolerate mess. He stared at them. The little one was less said the better thought Raghu.

'Open the door..' Said Uday Walia. He knew the man and he knew what he was thinking he had heard many times Raghu's grumblings.

'Raghu reached for the key and opened the door. Shradha, Bani and Jai got in behind. Shradha did not move from the window seat and Bani stuck between the two. Bani tried to lift her and put her in the centre Shradha shouted, "no ma Shadhu like here…' Bani did not want to embarrass her self. She quietly obliged.

Raghu was angry with the people, he put his foot on the accelerator and the car sped taking curves and turns where Bani had to hold on to her seat tight not to fall on Jai. She curbed the urge to shout at Raghu to drive the car slowly. At times her shoulders rubbed with his. And at times she felt Jai made conscious effort to move closer to the door which embarrassed her even more.

Bani lost her cool later she said in her stern voice, " Raghu kisi ko bhi ghar janne ki ithni jaldi nahin hein thum zara ahistha ghadi chalao…'

'Ji madam…' he said throwing her a look through the rare view mirror.

Jai contained his smile.

Bani had hard time giving bath to Shradha. Her hair was messed with sand. She had to use Shampoo twice to get the sand out of her scalp.

She dressed Shradha in her night suit and went to take bath. She prepared Uday Walia's dinner. Sent it through Tony. Fed Shradha helped Tony to set the table for Jai and went to have her dinner.

Bani was reading a book after putting Shradha to sleep. She heard a knock on the door.

'She went and opened the door. Tony stood before her.

'Yes Tony'.

'Bani madam Sir wants to speak to you he is in his study…'

Bani nodded. Tony left passing her the information. Bani stood at her door thoughtfully. Why does he want to see her? What was in store for her now? She closed the door slowly and walked to his study.

She knocked and went in.

Uday Walia was seated behind his Oak desk. He looked up as she went in.

'Bani, take your seat..'

Bani sat down hesitantly.

'I need your help.' He did not mince with words.

Bani looked up.

'Jai is joining Walia industries from tomorrow onwards..'

Bani's heart beat rose.

'He need help, I want you to help him to get the hang of it..'

Bani wanted to scream NO… No more. Where was her destiny taking her? Will this ordeal end with just helping him around the office?

Was she getting trapped again emotionally and physically?

Uday Walia was studying Bani. He understood her predicament. He had to do this. With God's blessings he might not go wrong again.

Uday cleared his throat and Bani woke from her reverie.

'I cannot come to the office now; you know my condition better than any one. I need this favor from you.'

Bani did not have any other way she nodded.

'Good. I spoke to Mahesh… he will take care..'

Bani knew there was no way out from this. She has been chained. However she throws her arms and feet there was no getting out of it.

Uday's attention turned to the door as he heard a knock and Jai walked in to the study.

'Jai, I was telling Bani about your decision to join the company.' Uday said ignoring their discomfort. 'She will help you with the proceedings and Mahesh will give his expertise advice.. And I know Jai you are not knew in this business.'

Jai nodded.

Bani pushed back her chair and got up.

Uday looked at Bani, 'Thanks Bani and good night.'

She nodded and left the room.

Jai took the seat she left. Father and son spoke about business.

Mahesh Randhwa Arranged fro board meeting the next day. To reintroduce Jai and the staff who would work under him.

Bani was tensed when she walked into the office. She knew every one knew about her marriage with Jai Walia and how he had left and what they were saying behind her back. She knew about the office grapevine. At times people looked at her with sympathy. She heard some bizarre news about her too. Shradha was Jai and Bani's Child. The old man got them married to save his face. In the beginning it did bother her and later she started ignoring them.

And there were few who knew the truth about Jai's brother and his marriage.

Here again she was disturbed at the turn of events. She did not want to think what gossip would take place once they worked together.

She sat in her office deep in thoughts.

Mahesh knocked on her door and walked in. Bni looked at him.

'Ma'am, sir has arrived the meeting will begin in 5 minutes..'

Bani nodded. Mahesh left and she got up straightening her dress and walked to the conference room.

Jai looked at the door as she arrived. Their eyes met for a fleeting second. She took her seat. The rest of the staff arrived and Mahesh started the meeting.

The meeting went for about an hour.

Every one took leave from the room. Mahesh, Jai and Bani were left.

Mahesh turned to them. He spoke to them about a project that was getting delayed for no reasons and the engineering was acting impossible. He wouldn't come to the office nor would take the call if they tried.

Jai heard him patiently and told him he would visit the site himself.

Their meeting was over in fifteen minutes. Bani retunred to her seat and Jai walked to his cabin adjacent to his fathers.

Jai felt nostalgic as he entered the office. His brother had used the office. He took the seat and sat down shutting his eyes.
