Beware Rakhi, we are all Bahus: Prachi Desai

Prachi Desai started her career in television with Balaji Telefilm's "Kasamh Se". After her long run in the television, Prachi has become the heart throb of not only the audience, but her producer Ekta also.

And with her winning appearance in the colored dance show "Jhalak Dikhla Jaa", she has attained fame in Bollywood also. Having faith in the support of her audience, Prachi is now ready to participate in another reality show "Yeh Hai Jalwa" on 9X.

We have a small table-talk with the propitious actress to share with you:

Q.: In your winning show "Jhalak Dikhla Jaa", you had a mentor to teach you dancing. But you are playing the role of a dance teacher to five guys in your soon-to-be-shown show "Yeh Hai Jalwa". How have you prepared for the show?
A.: I have not prepared much for the show. Actually all the children taking part in the show are so spontaneous and so energetic that I had to go with almost no preparation at all. I think all I have to concentrate on is to build up a relationship with them.

Q.: Rakhi told us that she is taking part in the show because there is no bride in the show. What would you like to say about that?
A.: I must remind Rakhi that there are not one but four brides in the show. We all are brides in our respective shows but in this reality show we all are working as what we are. And I think I am not Bani, but Prachi Desai in this show.

And as far as I can remember Rakhi said that she is taking part in the show because there is no bride from the channel 9X in this show, which makes her relieved.

Q.: You said that you are not over confident but just confident. Why so, when you have won a dance reality show recently?
A.: Yeah, that's true. I am confident and never over confident. Believe me; I am saying this from the bottom of my heart. I was the winner in my last show but I cannot forget practicing because of that.

My last show has increased the expectation of my audience and I have to work even harder to fulfill their expectations. I won my last show because of the votes of my audience and I have to keep them in my mind.

I have to teach dancing to five guys and I have to see that they win. It's now all about their dreams and I have to see that they don't lose their hopes because of me.

Q.: Don't you think that this expectation is an added pressure on you?
A.: Not at all. I never think of that in this way. But you know the truth is that I get tired of working hard in my all other shows and shootings.

But truly speaking, I have never felt any pressure from my audience. At the same time their expectations boost us for the best only.

Q.: You are the teacher of the group "Masti Ki Pathsala" in the show "Yeh Hai Jalwa". How much do you enjoy?
A.: I enjoy it too much. I am happy that I have students from colleges with me. And they are of my age.

I have not seen my college for last two years, so being with them I can be little nostalgic sharing my college days. And besides rehearsing we spend much time together.

Q.: Do you share your college days with your students in the show?
A.: I have just shot for two or three days with them. I don't think they feel comfortable with me as of now, because we have not interacted that much. But I am trying on and on so that they feel comfortable with me.

And you know, the first day they came for the shooting, they addressed me as 'mam' only. But now they call me as Prachi only after I forbade them to call me 'mam'. I want them to be more casual with me so that we can perform even better.

Q.: You have signed a film with Farhan Akhtar. Please tell us about that film.
A.: The name of the film is "Rock On". We are still shooting for the film. It's the first film in both of our careers and that's why we both are working harder on that.

It's completely based on Mumbai and I am playing the role of a young lady from Mumbai. It's quite a unique experience for me. I am really impressed that Farhan Akhtar is as good an actor as a director. I have no right to say anything else on that film now.

Q.: How can you relate yourself with the character?
A.: She is like 50 percent to my real life character. But yeah, she is quite different from my character Bani. She is quite confident and hard working like me.

Q.: From bride to competitor in reality show and from there to actress in a film. How satisfied are you with this journey?
A.: I am really happy and I am doing more than what I have ever expected. I am just hoping I use the chance to the fullest. Nobody would like to let such a chance go and I guess everyone would have worked equally hard for the offer.

Q.: Do you have any more wish that you like to achieve?
A.: I don't have any particular dream. I have been living with the only dream of becoming an actress and that I have achieved that. Now I only hope to preserve what I have.

Q.: Audience has accepted you as a daughter-in-law. Do you think they will accept you as an actress too?
A.: I think they will always be with me. And I pray to them for their support. I have taken the risk of acting in films depending on them.

I love them the way they love me. I won the reality show only because of their votes and am preparing for the second reality show for them only. And I know they will never break my heart.

Q.: You are so busy with film and television these days. How do you arrange time for that?
A.: I think my mother is facing more problems because of that time management. I still have few days to work for "Kasamh Se".

And at the same time I am working for films, too. And besides all I am doing the reality show also. So I need more time. But I am doing everything properly, I guess.

Art of living simple
A gold and brown theme runs through TV star Prachi Desai's apartment

prachi and her pals In the company of soft toys
Prachi Desai isn't just any teenager. She's the leading lady of one of television's most popular soaps — Kasamh Se. But Prachi remains down-to-earth and it is reflected in her home.

"I'd fill my notebooks with my autographs and even prepare awards speech. So, when I actually took home these trophies I can't tell you how excited I was," says Prachi pointing to the many awards that adorn her home.

To make place for yourself on the sofas means having to push aside Prachi's many soft toys. Says the actor, "I adore them. Someone on the sets got wind of it and on my birthday I was gifted something like 50 soft toys!"

As I enter her home, I can feel a sense of warmth. I am greeted at the door by Prachi's mother. It's a refreshingly modest flat. Prachi then walks in, looking hip (unlike the bahu she plays) in a pair of Replay jeans and a baby-pink top with spaghetti straps.

Prachi tells me how she felt when she stepped into this house for the first time. "I was so happy and proud about myself that I had achieved it all on my own. Yet, the first thought that came to my mind was that this place was only temporary (it's a rented apartment). God willing, I shall soon own a flat in Mumbai."

Situated on the ninth floor, the house is far removed from the hustle and bustle of the city. "It's a quiet, breezy place that offers a great view," says Prachi, as she sinks into the sofa adjoining the large window in her living area. "This is my favourite spot."

The house has a gold and brown theme running through it with beige sofas encased in dark wood. While Prachi has no pets, she has a life-size soft toy in the shape of an adorable dog. Says Prachi, "I bought it New York and I actually had to get a special suitcase to carry this big doggy."

Considering that at 19 Prachi has achieved so much, does she believe in luck and has this house brought her more of that? "Touchwood", she says instantly, giving away her superstitious nature. "I think my time is good right now. Even the previous rented house I lived in soon after moving to Mumbai proved good for me. And since moving in here, things have only got better."

Unlike a lot of stars, Prachi isn't going out of her way to redecorate her place to suit Vastu standards. Prachi reasons, "Yes, I am a bit superstitious in the sense that if someone tells me something about the correct placement of furniture etc., I'll try to follow it. For now, I have this horse-shoe shaped evil-eye pendant at the entrance of the living room, which I got from Istanbul and a golden coloured lucky ship that was gifted to me by "Ujas", a Gujarati publication. I was told to place 12 coins at particular places within the ship and make the ship face east. My mom has taken care of that for me and I guess this ship too has added to my luck."

Several idols of Ganapati, Lakshmi and Balaji are placed conspicuously in the living room. She says, "The idols have been gifted to me by friends and fans and I treasure them. There's also a small prayer area in the bedroom. Though I don't know much about rituals, I believe in regular prayers."

Finally, what does home mean to her? "My home is the warmest place. When I feel low or after a hard day at work, home is where I like to be," smiles Prachi.

Twist In the Tale

What happens when 'timeless' daily soaps on Indian television can't stretch their elastic-like plots anymore? Thanks to some done-to-death 'winning' formulae that have worked wonders for years now, the makers of the stretching sagas don't have to stress their grey matter too much. The story of rebirth is one such ready-at-hand solution that has saved many daily soaps from dying timely deaths. Then there is the twist of memory loss-with this excuse it is easy to trespass the boundary of credibility and thus let the story change its direction. Last but not the least is a sudden leap in the ages of the characters. Reincarnation
For this one, the TV shows have definitely drawn the motivation from Hindi films like the Subhash Ghai's 80s' reincarnation drama Karz. Currently, Star Plus' Kumukum Ek Pyaara Sa Bandhan and Zee TV's Banoo Main Teri Dulhann are applying this tried-and-tested formula to their benefit. In the first one, protagonists Sumit (Hussain Kuwajerwala) and Kumkum (Juhi Parmar) suddenly die while seeking blessings at a temple, only to be born again and reunited as lovers. Hussain's character was reintroduced in the show last Friday, while Parmar's will re-enter next week. Boosting TRPs and introducing new characters in the show are the prime reasons for letting the characters die one fine day. Such catastrophe may also strike, if an actor wants a holiday—that's what happened for Kumkum when Parmar wanted to take a break. Earlier, shows like Balaji Telefilms' Kahiin Kissi Roz infused the rebirth drama, but this technique failed to offer any redemption. That's no deterrent for Dulhann, where the lead artists Divyanka Tripathi and Sharad Kelkar are back as new characters. "For 300 episodes, the audience has seen the negative character scheming against the main cast. The story had to culminate. So we had to change the track, and offer a new lease of life," says Pearl Shah, creative director, Dulhann. Memory loss
The earliest example is Doordarshan's Shanti that was featured in the late 90s; protagonist Shanti's mother was raped by two friends and later she gave birth to a daughter, but not before losing her memory. In the early days of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Mihir Virani (then played by Amar Upadhyay) was shown losing his yaddasht after an accident. Currently, a host of shows like Kayamath, Meri Doli Teri Aangna, Saat Phere and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii are reaping the benefits of this useful dramatic technique. Saloni (Rajashree Thakur) and Om (Kiran Karmakar) of Saat and Kahaani, however, have just recovered their memories; the audience was reminded of the Sridevi-starrer Sadma as Saloni's old lover Nahar (Sharad Kelkar) helped her remember her past. In Meri Doli, the memory loss of protagonist Ruhaan has served as an opportunity to introduce new characters.

Age leap
Balaji Telefilms takes the entire credit for making this popular. Their longest-running show Kyunki has seen some innumerable generation leaps, and currently the Virani family is witnessing its fifth generation. No matter how much grey hair the actors flaunt in the serial, the character of grandmother Baa (Sudha Sivpuri), who was present since the beginning, is still shown to be alive. Few months back, Balaji's other popular show Kasamh Se too took a five-year leap. The drama was around the rift in the relationship of Bani (Prachi Desai) and Jay Walia (Ram Kapoor). Before the ageing was shown, there was also a lot of speculation on the look of Kapoor, who flaunted grey strands right from the beginning.

Prachi Desai will no longer be the face of Bani in Kasamh Se, as the pretty damsel will be bidding adieu to the serial very soon. "My last shooting date for Kasamh Se is April 4", quips Prachi. When quizzed whether she would get back to the serial after a break, a very emotional Prachi says, "No, I am not coming back to Kasamh Se. I do not want to disappoint my fans, and that is one reason why I have taken up Yeh Hai Jalwa, the reality show on 9X."

The elegant actress though is not aware whether Ekta has zeroed in on the new Bani. Prachi, another actress among the long list of television stars to go knocking on the doors of Bollywood, will be seen adorning a new look in her debut film, 'Rock On',along side Farhan Akhtar. The shooting of the film is going on in full swing. "I have been shooting for the film from February, and we will be done with the shoot in a month's time or so", says Prachi as she signs off.

So here is the original Bani signing off for good!!

Kaun banegi Bani?

Three actresses are being considered to play the next Bani in Kasamh Se. Who will finally bag the role?

Vickey Lalwani

Gurdeep Kohli, Pallavi Kulkarni, Nausheen Ali Sardar

Balaji Telefilms is closing in on the new Bani for Kasamh Se. The girls in the race are Gurdeep Kohli (Dr Juhi of Sanjivani), Nausheen Ali Sardar (Kusum of Kkusum) and Pallavi Kulkarni (Karishma of Kehta Hai Dil).

It remains to be seen who will step into Prachi Desai's shoes. Prachi, who is currently shooting for Ritesh Siddhwani and Farhan Akhtar's film Rock On, is expected to shoot her last scene for Kasamh Se on April 3. The final selection for the new Bani will be made later this week.

It may be recalled that Mumbai Mirror was the first to report on Jan 17, 2008 that Prachi was quitting Kasamh Se. Citing reasons for quitting the show, Prachi had said: "According to the contract that I have signed for Rock On, I cannot be seen on the small screen during the film's release and promotion. I will be violating the film's contract if I shoot for Kasamh Se."

Prachi Desai
Pallavi, we hear, is leading the pack. "But it is anybody's race. We are working on the details and only time will tell as to who will be the next Bani," says our source.

"All three are equally talented. While Nausheen has patched up with Ekta after she did the special episode of Kuch Is Tarah, Gurdeep and Balaji have been keen to work together since a long time. Above all, Pallavi, who is thin and tall like Prachi, resembles the original Bani to some extent," our source adds.

It's their loss if they don't understand the power of Balaji

Ekta Kapoor sets the record straight for actors who have quit Balaji Telefilms

Vickey Lalwani

Let's start with Prachi Desai. She is quitting Kasamh Se…
Yeah. Prachi is shooting with us till April 3. The hunt for the new Bani is on.

We all know how television works. There surely must be a window left open for her to come back.
No. Prachi won't come back in Kasamh Se. The show is undergoing a generation leap. She will have to play a 40-year-old woman if she returns and she won't even look 35!

Will you take her in some other Balaji show later?
I don't know. It depends on whether she will fit the role.

You leave no stone unturned to promote your actors and then they leave you...
My relationship with every actor- be it Prachi Desai or Pulkit Samrat or Smriti Irani- is purely professional. It's their loss if they don't understand the power of Balaji Telefilms. Some of them part amicably while some insist on making an ugly situation. Balaji's doors are closed for those who prefer to leave on a bad note. Take the case of Pulkit. I had no problem with him till he started speaking negatively about us in interviews.

Should you have taken Pulkit's case so far?
Is it wrong that an employer has an exclusive contract with its employees? Every professional company asks its employees to serve a certain amount of notice period before quitting or else pay up. So why is so much noise made if and when Balaji Telefilms insists on exclusivity? An actor can't get up one day and just leave a show. It's unethical and unprofessional. I am not dealing with one actor. There are almost 250 actors who work in Balaji shows. If breaking the contract was so easy, tomorrow everybody will break his or her contract. (Pauses)

Go on…
It's just that we have certain stringent policies so that the company runs smoothly. There are 20 actors who have been loyal to us for almost eight years. How will they feel if somebody just waltzes in and out at his own will? Walking into any company should be tough and returning all over again should be tougher- that's Balaji's thought process. Our staff shouldn't take us for granted. Let's talk something else now. I don't want to talk anymore on Pulkit. He is too small a fry. For me, he doesn't even exist. In my personal periphery, I won't even notice him; he is so short.

But Smriti Irani is coming back to Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi?
No, Smriti is not coming back to Kyunki... For now, I have dropped the idea of getting her back in the show.

You were supposed to make Mahabharat for Star. Now we hear that you will now make the same for some other channel?
I don't think that I will be making Mahabharat. Yes, I was supposed to make it for Star. But they have now hired some big names like Chandraprakash Dwivedi and Bobby Bedi for Mahabharat,so I changed my plan.

There are reports that there are problems between Balaji and Star?
Balaji and Star have had a very good relationship since the past seven years. We constantly work on it. Of course, a change in management has been a small bump, but it's not a roadblock that we can't cross. It took us some time to know the new people at Star but they also are an efficient lot. In fact, Balaji Events will be conducting the channel's awards this year.

You patched up with Nausheen Ali Sardar, who had left Balaji on a bad note when she refused to age in Kkusum and walked out of the show.
Yeah (smiles). We were planning a special episode of Kuch Is Tarah and everyone said that we must get Nausheen back.

How did that happen? You generally don't forget and forgive...
Well, Nausheen did that special episode and refused to take any money. So, we sent her a gift and that broke the ice. When you say that I don't forget and forgive, you make me sound like Saturn's one and only reincarnation.

What kind of TRPs do Kyunki... and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii enjoy today?
Last week itself, Kyunki... was the No 1 show on Indian television and this has been the case every week. One needs to understand that there is too much of fragmentation in viewership today. Currently, Kyunki… enjoys a TRP of 6+. Honestly speaking, that's tougher to get than the 12+ which we had two years ago.

How much longer will Kyunki… and Kahaani… go on?
I don't run shows, the audience does. I will stop these shows the day they stop watching them.

Are you telling me that the audience stopped watching Kasautii Zindagi Kay and that's why you pulled it off air?
I won't deny that the TRPs of Kasautii… had gone down quite a bit and moreover, I didn't have a story to tell.

What are you making for television and films this year?
I am doing a new show for Sony and I am also getting into reality shows in a big way. As for films, we have four films this year- EMI, C-Company, Mission Istanbul, Once Upon a Time and we have also bought the worldwide rights of Sarkar Raj.

Before I forget, Rajeev Khandelwal (who also quit Balaji) said in an interview that if you were to offer him a film, he would say, 'Thank you, but sorry, I am not interested…'
I am terribly depressed. I think that I'll start crying (laughs).

Prachi feeling bad for Bani

Prachi Desai won the best actress award at the Sansui Television Awards for Kasamh Se. Ironically this might be her last award for the show as she will stop shooting for it on April 4.
"I am going to miss all this. It feels like I am leaving my school or college. I do not know whether there is going to be farewell party but I will definitely throw a small bash for my co-stars. I will always be a part of this show and it was best phase of my life. I do not want to it to leave like this but I can't help it, "says an emotional Prachi. Asked about her replacement, she says, "I hope whoever becomes the new Bani will do a great job. The character is very close to my heart so I will feel awkward if I see anyone else as Bani since I have been playing it for nearly two years."

About winning the award, she comments, "It was a great feeling but I was surprised when my name was announced as I never expected it. It is very tough to maintain your popularity and I am thankful to my fans for their support and votes."

Prachi will finish filming for her debut film Rock On by end of next month following which she is going on a holiday. The buzz is that she has got an offer for another film and that she is keenly thinking about it. But it is said the news has upset the Balaji queen.
