'Replacing Prachi is challenging'

She has taken over the reigns from Bani, the role made popular by Prachi Desai in Balaji's Kasamh Se. After popular performances in Sanjeevani and Sindoor, Gurdeep Kohli marks a return to acting and in a new avatar. She tells Gauri Kohli about her new role and comeback --

Q. What prompted you to take up Kasamh Se?

A. I was keen on working after marriage and was free for some time since I didn't have many shows in hand. The banner is good and it's a prime time show that's been popular ever since it started. I couldn't have asked for more. It is a big comeback for me.

Q. How is it stepping into Prachi Desai's shoes?

A. Prachi is a good actress and has played the role well all these years. As for Bani, she has become a household name. Replacing Prachi is a challenging task. I have done strong and similar roles earlier in my shows Sanjeevani and Sindoor. I am not new to TV and don't see any reason why viewers will not accept me as the new Bani.

Viewers may have a problem accepting me as Bani initially. But they will do so gradually. The role is tailormade and it's not just another replacement. The change of guard will be subtle so that the viewers get time to adjust and my entry is also justified.

Q. Are you okay with the generation leap?

A. There are many actors who are working in such shows. In fact, generation leaps are very common in serials today. Smriti Irani, Saakshi Tanwar and Shweta Tiwari, they all have done it successfully, so why can't I? There is a constant effort to give my character an aged look. Generation leaps are not about greying your hair. Such changes are a part and parcel of every show and they are adopted to enhance the show's longevity and add spice to the story.

Q. How is it working with Balaji Telefilms?

A. This the first time I'm working with them. I think they appreciated my work in my earlier shows. I was offered roles earlier in other Balaji shows but could not take them up because I was always tied up with my other shows.

Q. What's your take on serials on Indian TV today?

A. Indian TV has reached its zenith due to the love and affection of the audience. Whether it's the generation leap or bringing back characters, they're all tried and tested methods that have proved the success of serials. There's great money, TRP and following for everyone, including the actors.

Q. What about reality TV?

A. Reality TV is not all that real because I have been part of it. It may be popular but it's just a phase that's not going to last long.

It's fiction that will always rule the roost.

Leap to newness

As Kasamh Se takes a 16-year leap, all the characters will sport a new look and the show is already in the makeover mode. With Gurdeep Kohli stepping into Prachi Desai's shoes as the new Bani, there's a lot in store for viewers. Gauri Kohli tells you more --

Promises are meant to be broken, goes a famous saying. Balaji's Kasamh Se has proved it right yet again. Promises of a promising love story seem to have gone for a toss post Prachi Desai's exit from the show.

With Bani dead and the death of the chemistry between Jai Walia and Prachi Desai, there was a desperate need to pump in a new lease of life to the show and the makers have tried to do just that. Following shows like Kyunkii, Kahani and Kasauti, Kasamh Se too, has leapt to a 16-year fast forward.

This not only means the introduction of new faces that will be part of the younger generation, but also a new Bani, now played by Gurdeep Kohli. "The new look has been carefully devised to go with Bani's image. It's something that has never been shown earlier. The mood will be positive with the Walias being shown as a close-knit family," says Sukriti Saxena, creative head of Kasamh Se.

And for those wondering what's happening with Bani, here's the answer. "Bani is now Proneeta and she has lost her memory. She will be back soon to take revenge for her murder," Saxena adds.

"For now as she has forgotten everything due to her accident and is staying with a new family who gave her refuge and a second life. But she will be back in Jai Walia's life soon," says Gurdeep Kohli, the new Bani.

Once again, the show will witness a sense of dj vu with the setting and story turning positive, for the time being. "Jai (Ram Kapoor) will be shown staying with his daughters Ganga, Krishna and Vidya. We have again chosen this track because we want to show a similar story and the bond between three sisters, just like Bani, Pia and Rani initially.

"As for Jigyaasa, she is in jail as of now. We have not decided yet as to how her character will shape up," says Saxena.

But one thing is for sure. Pia, who is currently leading a happy life with husband Pushkar and daughter, will also be brought back in Jai and Bani's life later.

As for Bani's look, Gurdeep will be seen wearing chiffon saris with a rich look to it. Other than that, she will not sport a typical knot or grey hair to show that she has grown old.

Playing Bani and Jai Walia's daughter Ganga is Priya Bathija of Khwaish fame. The young Ganga, who survived a cancer scare before her mother Bani's presumed death, has now grown into a pretty girl. Ganga can be termed the second Bani. She will even dress as her mother with simple make-up.

The biggest makeover of all will be Ram Kapoor aka Jai Walia. Drifting away from the serial trend, Ram will adorn an even more aged look with the same salt-pepper hair but with a prop in the form of a stick.

He will be seen wearing dark coloured suits. He will also wear the age-old watch, something like the Gandhi watch with a small round dice and a gold chain attached to that which is usually placed inside the pocket of the suit.

And after Smriti Irani's much-hyped exit and entry from Kyunkii, there could be good news for Prachi Desai fans too if Ekta Kapoor decides to bring her back.

src="/hitCount.php?storyId=302423"> Kasamh Se's new Bani on her television comeback Can you ever be Bani, since the audience associates the character with Prachi Desai?
I think it's too early to comment on that. The first four episodes have just been aired and I have drawn favourable response. We have to wait and watch. But often actors find it difficult to step into someone else's shoes in popular television shows?
I have no apprehensions. I am Prachi's senior in the television industry and I too will draw appreciation. I have had my fair share of shows that were popular. People will love me too. You had cut down on work after marriage (to Arjun Punj). Are you looking at reviving your career?
I took a break after marriage. But now that I am back, I am completely focused about a serious career. But that again depends on how things work out in my personal life.
But at present I can't work on any more shows since shooting for Kasamh Se is taking up almost 25 days of a month. Is your husband supporting your career move?
Family support is very important, particularly for television actors who have to go through long shooting hours that can even stretch through the night. My family encouraged me when I acted in Sanjeevani. Now I have a new family who are equally supportive. How has your experience of Balaji Telefilms been?
They have been very kind with me. The offer for Kasamh Se came long back but I took a while to decide, thinking about the pros and cons of acting in television shows after marriage. But they waited for me. I wanted to work with Balaji for the past six years since they are the biggest in the industry.

Will you consider acting in films, if you get offers, post Kasamh Se?
I received film offers since Sanjeevani but I was never interested. Family is my priority and I am not open to travelling and spending days away from home, which are a must for movies.

Tiff in break

Ekta Kapoor stormed out of a restaurant after having a minor tiff with Prachi Desai

Sandipan Dalal

Ekta Kapoor is known to mingle with her actor friends, and often hangs out with them at popular nightspots.

Surprisingly, she lost her cool while dining with a bunch of friends - Prachi Desai, Naman Shaw and Mridul Sanghvi - at a suburban restaurant last week.

What started with a friendly discussion on matters of production and actors, took the shape of a rather heated argument, which eventually prompted the 'queen of soaps' to storm out of the restaurant.

An eyewitness recounts, "Ekta and her friends were happily dining at their table. They were having a friendly banter. But soon thereafter we see tempers flying and Ekta leaving the restaurant in a huff."

Prachi Desai and her mother both rushed behind her while calling out to her. But Ekta was visibly upset and she drove out in her waiting car.

The rest of the group was also shocked by the episode and consequently left the restaurant without having finished their dinner.

A restaurant source informs, "Yes she had an altercation with her friends during the course of dinner.

Ekta looked quite peeved with her friends and after yelling at them for a while she left her food and walked out."

Ekta Kapoor, when contacted, said, "It was a small argument. That's all I want to say."

IPL beats household bahus
Monday April 28 2008 14:55 IST

Nidhi R Daiya

Tulsi, Parvati, Saloni, Gouri, the favorite bahus of every household in India are not happy. In fact smiles are on the faces of M S Dhoni,Yuvraj and Ganguly. They are the new heartthrobs of the millions of the audience who are hooked to the cable television.

As Bollywood coming hand in hand with cricket it's sure to grab more attention. The Target Rating Points (TRP) of IPL is much higher than the daily soaps.

TRP for popular operas like Kyuki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi have fallen down from 15.15 % to 11.23% while for Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki the ratings have dropped from 13.72% to 9.55% in the last one week. And for Kolangal and Simran Thirai it has gone down while Saat Phere, shows a rating of 4.6%.

While other channels are struggling to retain the viewers, IPL moves up to 7.3%,which is a dream figure for any daily soap. "There is always a small quarrel about what to watch as IPL matches have taken the place of our regular serial" justifies Indu.

Recent surveys done by the BCCI have indicated a 70% increase in TRP ratings for cricket match after India's victory in the T-20 World Cup. "It seems to be a strong competitor for all the soap operas," said Viraj a student.

Days are not far away for housewives to cheer for the cricketers than shed their tears for the bahus.

Ramu finds Ekta sexy
Author: Upala KBR Date: 09 May 2008

But Ram Gopal Varma is too intimidated to ask the queen of soaps out on a date

I'm too sexy for ramu! Ekta Kapoor
Ram Gopal Varma loves to make shocking confessions but his latest one has us really stumped! RGV says he finds Ekta Kapoor very hot and feels like a tongue-tied schoolboy in front of her.

It started soon after producer Ekta sent him a blank cheque after seeing the promos of Sarkar Raj. Ramu laughs, "Let me clarify that Ekta didn't give me a blank cheque but offered me one. That was her way of showing how much she trusts me."

My idea of sexiness

The gesture excited Ramu, "I have always been a great admirer of Ekta. The fact that she's a young entrepreneur, her achievements in the television industry, her attitude and strong character has always been admirable but above it all, I think she's very sexy! She fits into my concept of sexiness."

And what's that? Ramu says, "My description of sexy is anybody who is strong, intelligent and has got an attitude. Real sexiness is more about personality, than physical sexiness. Strength of character, one's own individuality and doing exactly what she wants to do. In all that, Ekta fits the bill."

Any chances of the filmmaker asking the soap queen out? Both being single and available? Ramu says, "Thanks but that's not on the agenda. I feel intimidated by Ekta.

I like the fact that here's this beautiful, young woman talking business, money and shares very much. I find that very attractive but being with someone as strong as her would reduce me to feeling like the maid of the house."

On the professional front there have been more brickbats than bouquets but Ramu remains unfazed, "Filmmaking is a business.

Like I can't take the credit for the success of Rangeela, Satya or Company or Sarkar similarly for Aag, Daud etc, I can't take the credit for its failure. Once I realise this was a mistake I made, I move on. So 20 days after Aag released, I had already started shooting my next film Contract and finished it."

Analysing flops

What amuses Ramu is when people ask him the difference between Aag and Saawariya as both were reported as flops. Ramu says, "The primary difference is that Aag was made out of arrogance and Saawariya was made out of passion and arrogance. I was arrogant enough to think I could remake Sholay better."

So there's no similarity? "The similarity between Aag and Saawariya is the fact that nobody asked us the stories. Nobody asked Sanjay Leela Bhansali because of his credibility and as it was being made with newcomers. Nobody asked me for the story in Aag because they thought I was making Sholay.

That was our common point. But I don't think I had one-tenth of the passion Sanjay had in the making of Saawariya. On the brighter side, if I had made Aag as passionately as he made Saawariya, Aag would have cost 10 times more," Ramu grins.

Prachi Desai & Bipasha Basu

Prachi Desai has stepped into big shoes. She has bagged the role initially supposed to be done by Bipasha Basu in Abbas-Mustan's yet-untitled film, to be directed by Rumi Jaffrey.

Our source from the industry informed us, "Bipasha was selected for the role initially. However, her enthusiasm waned when she heard that Rumi Jaffrey was directing it, thereafter she backed out and flew to Miami to be with John Abraham who is shooting there for Karan Johar's Dostana."

While Abbas-Mustan, remained unavailable for comment, their secretary Pappu confirmed the news saying, "Yes, we have Prachi on board."

Prachi too confirmed that she was indeed slated to do the Abba-Mustan film. She said, "I am doing the film with Abbas-Mustan. I have finished shooting for Farhan Akhtar's Rock On." When we asked her if she knew that she would be getting into Bips' shoes, she said, "I didn't know about that."

The film in question needs one more heroine. Apart from Prachi, the other girl finalised is Ritesh Deshmukh's 'good friend', Genelia D'souza. Govinda, Fardeen Khan and Tusshar Kapoor are the three male leads.

Despite a text message asking her to confirm the news, Bipasha remained unavailable for comment. We want to see how 'little Bani' (as she is fondly known in Balaji circles) will fill Bips' big shoes?

Prachi Rock's On

Remember Bani of Kasamh Se? Well now she will be seen in her first Bollywood movie – Rock On - with Farhan Akhtar as lead heroine. We spoke to the darling of the small screen as she wrapped her debut film.

"It's just been two since I finished shooting. Now I am taking rest because I was working continuously for three months for both for Kasamh Se and Rock On," says the actress.

Speaking about her role, she says "I am nervous about how I will look on the big screen sharing space with Farhan Akhtar, Arjun Rampal and how my fans will respond to it. My role is completely from that of Bani and with this role I will break the image of Bani."

Rumour also suggests that she has already signed her next film in which she has replaced none other than Bipasha Basu. "We are still in the process of talks so I really can't tell because we haven't yet signed any contract with them."

Prachi Desai's debut film is releasing on August 9th. It will also mark the debut of director Farhan Akhtar.

Theres more gossip on IPL then the show at times 😆😆

TV Queen Ekta attacks Shah Rukh over IPL

Television Queen Ekta Kapoor has attacked Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, by holding him solely responsible for the recent loss of viewership of her serials.

"We will fight it out. But yes, I must say that IPL has done tremendously well. And for this the only person to blame, is Shah Rukh Khan," said Ekta to an Indian newspaper. "We are definitely badly hit, but we let it pass. We've survived even the World Cup."

Her comments came after released figures showed TV ratings for the six metros in the country being a healthy 8 for the IPL Cricket matches, which are being screened during primetime
