Part 3
Bani sat on the grass in the garden, like most days. The gardener was watering the plants. She always liked watching people while they were doing work. Work meant any work – the servants cleaning the house, gardener cleaning the garden, watering the plants, leveling the grass, Tony arranging the things, cooking, cutting the vegetables, watchman riding a cycle, driver cleaning the car, Masi doing Pooja, Dadi watching movies, Aditya uncle joining Dadi-Masi conversation with ease, Anu decorating the house, Uday uncle reading and re-reading the newspaper and Jai…. Jai… She liked watching Jai doing his work. No matter what disturbance comes, he never gets up from the place without completing his work unless and until some emergency arrives. Jai… He was always like that. Even when she used to disturb him with her homework, he would take a short break and help her do her work, then continued with his work, but he never stopped his work and got up. This is something she had learnt from Jai. And Krishna aunty… Thinking about Krishna aunty brought a smile in her face. Watching Krishna aunty do any work was a treat – washing the clothes, washing the dishes in the kitchen, responding to Uday uncle's question, her making tea, cooking, talking, above her pleasant smile… she was a gem of a woman. She was the best… in anything she does. She admired Krishna aunty since the time she met her. Krishna aunty… the person who loved her unconditionally.
Just as her mind was reeling to the past, her mobile rang. She looked at the display and attended the call as if she was expecting the call. "Hello"
"Bani! Good Morning!"
"Good Morning, Pushkar." she said with a lopsided smile.
"Bani, subah-subah aisi kyun baat kar rahe ho? C'mon Bani. Cheer up." Pushkar tried to lift her mood and spirits.
Bani gave a small laugh. "Kaam kaise chal raha hai?"
"Thank Lord, choti-si muskurahat toh mili subah-subah. Meherbani ke liye bahu-bahut shukriya." He heard Bani laughing slightly again. "Kaam… aapki kripa se bahut achcha chal raha hai." He said.
"Aur?"
"Pia teek hai." He said in a low voice.
"Oh!" That was what he got.
"Bani, mujhe pata hai ki tum apne di ke bare mein nahin poochoge. Lekin, kehna toh mera farz hai naa?"
"Jaanti hoon." She said softly. Then in a little cheerful voice said, "Aur kya chal raha hai?"
"Bani tumhein nahin lagta kit um kuch zyada ho kaam kar rahe ho… Mera matlab… maine toh tumse ek hi sketch maanga tha… Tumhein char karne ki kya zaroorat thi? Waise toh usmein se teen unhein pasand aakar le li… Phir bhi, itne time waste karne ki kya zaroorat hai?"
"Isse hi toh time chalta hai…" she said in a low voice.
Pushkar sighed on the other side. Then said, "Maine tumhare share tumhare account mein daal diya."
"Thanks!"
"Bani, if you don't mind, yahaan aa jao naa, thodi din…"
Bani said hurrily, "Nahin, nahin Pushkar. Main yahin teek hoon."
"Bani---"
"Nahin Pushkar. Wahaan aaongi toh problem hogi. Usse achcha main yahin rahoon. Kya fark padta hai?" she said.
There was silence at both sides for some time.
"Well… tumhari marzi…" he sighed again. "Baad mein phone karta hoon. Office ke liye tayyar hona hai."
"Teek hai, Bye!"
"Bye, Bani. Take care… Agar kisi bhi cheez ki zaroorat padi toh, please… please… mujhe batana."
"Okay…" she said softly.
"Tumhare okay ka matlab main achchi tarah se jaanta hoon" He rolled his eyes. Then said, "Anyways, take care… bye…!"
Bani smiled to herself as she uttered the word "Bye…!"
She looked at the display as the call ended. It showed 7:58 A.M. She was getting little bored. She remembered the incomplete sketch. She felt the need to finish it. But, she couldn't go inside. It was the time, every one would gather for breakfast. She did not want to go inside and fall on his eyes and thus spoil his mood. But she wanted to finish her sketch. Then, she decided to sneak inside. She walked towards the house.
She peeped into the living room standing behind the entrance door. She noticed no one over there. She sighed in relief and walked with caution without making any noise towards the stairs.
As she was climbing the stairs, she heard her name being called in the dining room. She stopped and looked in that direction. Then she realized they were not calling her but speaking about her.
"Ye Bani kahin dekhayi nahin de rahi hai?" Aditya uncle's voice.
"Roz aisi hi hota hai aur tum roz yehi poochte ho?" Jigyasa scolding Aditya.
"Jigyasa, chup kar. Pata nahin kal raat usne dinner ki ya nahin." Dadi sounded worried.
"Woh humare saath nahin khati, bas. Lekin zaroor kha leti hai." Jigyasa's voice.
Bani swallowed.
"Pata nahin, is ladki ko kya ho jaati hai." Masi's worried voice.
"Masi, woh ab baayees saal ki ho gayi hai. Pehle jaise choti nahin hai ki hum uski har baat par khyaal rakte. Woh apni khyaal khud rakh sakti hai." Jai's voice.
A frown appeared in Bani's face.
"Woh toh teek hi hai. Lekin, kuch samaj nahin aa raha hai. Hamesha khoyi-khoyisi rehti hai. Kya karti hai, kahaan rehti hai, kuch pata nahin chalta hai. Lekin, kal achanak itni khush lag rahi thi ki mujhe laga ki humari Bani wapas aa gayi. Lekin… kal dinner pe phir se nahin aayi… Kya karoon is ladki ka?" Masi's worried voice.
"Yeh humari Bani kya laga rakha hai aap, Masi? Maine pehle hi kaha ki is ladki se shaadi mat kijiye, bhaiyya. Aapne meri baat suni nahin. Pata nahin, mama ne kya dekha is ladki mein ki…" Jigyasa cursed voice.
Bani stood frozen in the stairs. Jigyasa's voice echoed in her ears. Pata nahin, mama ne kya dekha is ladki mein ki… What does that mean? Krishna aunty… Bani stood confused… It took some time for her to gather herself to go back to the room.
Once she was in the room, Jigyasa's voice echoed in her ears again… Pata nahin, mama ne kya dekha is ladki mein ki… Suddenly she realized one thing. Jai married her only because of Krishna aunty. May be, aunty forced him to marry her? Why? So, Jai did not marry her for her or for him or because he loved her… The sudden realization shocked her and she fell on the floor.
